Do look through all our hundreds of listings. Some of them are free to enter but all include contact details so do check the events before visiting. Damon Hill visits St Michael’s Primary School
Damon Hill, the British former racing driver and World Champion, went to a special assembly at St Michael’s Primary School in Wandsworth in February to talk to the children. The focus of the assembly was on how to overcome challenges and achieve your dreams. Damon’s answers highlighted the importance of persistence, hard work and having a passion for what you do. The children asked Damon what challenges he had to overcome to become World Champion. He told them, “It takes a lot of willpower and hard work. I had to go to the gym to keep fit.You have to stick at it, even when at times you feel like you want to give up. There’s a saying: ‘Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.Yard by yard, life is hard.’ When I won the World Championship, it was not just about winning – I just wanted to know I had tried my best.” Damon was also asked what one thing he would say to a young person today who wants to be a professional sportsman or woman. He told them, “You have to love the sport you want to do. Having a passion for your sport will help you stick with things even when it gets tough.” Watch out for St Michael’s pupils on the sports pages in the future. They certainly took Damon’s words to heart. 4

Sign up for the NPL Water Rocket Challenge
On Wednesday 24 June, you’ll be able to watch water rockets fill the sky at the annual National Physical Laboratory Water Rocket Challenge, held at NPL’s Sports Club field in Teddington. This amazing annual event has been running for 21 years and has an international profile, with teams coming from near and far to pit their water rocketry science and engineering against each other in landing rockets exactly 70 metres away, whilst spending as long in the air as possible. This is your chance to enter a team for your school, family or youth group (primary and secondary schools only in the afternoon, and families and youth groups etc. in the evening). On the day, you’ll also be able to participate in workshops or join the hundreds of spectators who come in the evening (6 to 8.30pm) to cheer on and be wowed. It’s great fun and all proceeds go to a local children’s hospice. Register teams, book workshop places and find out more at www.npl.co.uk/wrc.

Scientists from ZSL (Zoological Society of London)’s London HogWatch programme have found hotspots of native hedgehog populations in the south west of London, greater than in other parts of the city. The research, funded by wildlife charity People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES), involved placing hundreds of camera traps in several green spaces across the capital over a two-week period throughout 2019. In south west London - at the WWT Wetland Centre, Barnes Common, Putney Lower Common, Roehampton Golf Course, the Bank of England Sports Centre and on Palewell Common - 62 sightings were recorded, with hedgehogs spotted on 13 of the 30 cameras set up in the WWT Wetland Centre alone. Hedgehogs were also seen across Barnes and on Putney Lower Common, but their distributions were fragmented. There’s lots that people can do to help hedgehogs in their own back gardens, from putting a CD case sized hole in a garden fence, to recording sightings on the BIG Hedgehog Map. Hedgehog Street, a nationwide campaign run by BHPS and PTES, offers simple top tips showing how people can make their garden a hedgehog haven.
Happy Birthday Mog
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Judith Kerr’s adored cat, Mog. A special anniversary edition of Mog the Forgetful Cat is out now and a ‘Summer of Mog’ will be heralded with a brandnew Audio Collection of eight Mog titles on CD and digital download. These titles will be read by actress and artist Tacy Kneale, Judith’s daughter, bringing her mother’s stories to a new generation of listeners. In September, a celebratory title, Mog’s Birthday, will launch in hardback. HarperCollins created this special birthday story in collaboration with Judith Kerr, using a selection of pictures from across fifty years of illustrating Mog to bring this delightful story to life.

Snow White and the One Dwarf
The best shows around... My First Ballet: Cinderella at Richmond Theatre
Illustration: Mark Ruffle
Introduce your children to the magic of live ballet at Richmond Theatre between 27 and 31 May with this sparkling production of the classic fairy tale, adapted for children aged 3+. Cinderella longs to escape her jealous stepsisters and attend the royal ball. When magic is set afoot, she is transformed into a glittering princess, but the spell will only last until midnight. Cinderella’s beauty is the toast of the ball, and her kindness and hopeful nature soon win the heart of the Prince. As the midnight clock chimes, she must flee, leaving behind only a sparkling glass slipper… A live narrator, glittering costumes and beautiful choreography tell everyone’s favourite rags to riches story, to a specially shortened version of Prokofiev’s music. Since its creation in 2012, over 320,000 people have enjoyed English National Ballet’s My First Ballet series. This unique collaboration between English National Ballet and English National Ballet School is performed by students of the school. With acclaimed choreographer Ruth Brill at the helm, this production
Visit Colour House Theatre, in Merton Abbey Mills, during the first week of the Easter holidays, when the company that produced The Princess & the Toad, Beast! and Rumpelstiltskin & The Sleeping Beauty makes a welcome return with another idiosyncratic spin on a children’s fairy-story. This time it’s Snow White and the One Dwarf, which has only one dwarf instead of seven (and is he actually a dwarf at all?) but does have a part for a Big Bad Wolf who has sauntered in from a completely different story. Once more, the recurring popular characters of the muffin-eating, memory-challenged King and his twin brother, the unreliable Royal Soothsayer, lead you through the tale. Snow White and her evil Aunt Morgana are guests of the King, but Morgana is furious at the fact that King Horace’s mirror has pronounced Snow White more beautiful than her. Meanwhile the King has enlisted the help of Jolly the dwarf to help him find some buried treasure. Add a poisoned apple and multiple cries of “Hippopotamus Woof!” and you have all the ingredients of another very funny musical extravaganza. It’s a show for all the family. Colour House Theatre is a wonderfully intimate venue for a child to enjoy what might be their first experience of live theatre. There are songs, there is dancing, the actors engage with the audience throughout the play, and the audience themselves often provide some of the biggest laughs. There are two performances each day, and three on the Friday, from 13 to 17 April. Show times and tickets can be found on the theatre’s website, www.colourhousetheatre.co.uk

Polka Theatre empowers children to navigate their world through inspirational theatre and creative experiences. Opening this autumn, their building reimagines what a dedicated children’s theatre could and should be, creating a vibrant hub for future generations at the heart of the community. The redevelopment embodies their vision for an inclusive, sustainable and inspirational Polka. The theatre’s advisory panel of 8 to 13 year olds are championing efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Polka are cutting their water and energy consumption and opting for renewable energy where possible. They’ll be able to limit overheating with solar control glass and external shading, and have solar panels on the roof. Polka are committed to using sustainable materials and placing recycling at the heart of their operations. As well as all the improvements to the building during the redevelopment, the theatre has also been working with Crew Energy to continue improving the building’s sustainability beyond reopening. Polka’s reimagined home will be a haven for families, including an extended Adventure Theatre with increased capacity, a centralised Clore Learning Space offering an expanded programme and a newly expanded destination café. There are new toilet and baby changing facilities, accessibility has been significantly improved and there is a new multi-sensory garden. Polka now also has its first onsite rehearsal studio so they can continue making excellent theatre for young audiences. FUTURE Polka is almost a reality, but they still need your help. To support their campaign, visit www.polkatheatre.com/futurepolka .

Out of School Activities learn to use nerves positively, which can put them at a huge advantage in big life moments. Hearing the audience clap at the end of the show is an incredible feeling. Yet it’s more than just the ego boost from the fans. Any type of performance requires teamwork to succeed. At Stagecoach, children learn that “It’s not just you on stage. You are responsible for a larger group that is counting on you to do your part, so they can do theirs.”
Dynamos Cricket
The ECB has launched Dynamos Cricket, a new programme to inspire children aged 8 to 11 to play cricket. Two programmes in May and July will allow up to 35,000 more children to enjoy cricket this season. Dynamos will encourage boys and girls to have fun and fall in love with the game. The programme is designed for children graduating from ECB’s All Stars Cricket programme for 5 to 8-year olds but is also designed to welcome those who are new to the game. Up to 35,000 children will take part in Dynamos Cricket in their local centres at one of two 6 to 12-week courses, which will take place during the summer term, beginning mid-May, and over the school holidays, alongside The Hundred.
At the end of the day, the transferable skills a child learns from performing may not be nearly as important as the experience of performing itself. Simply being part of the performance process, your child will be exposed to a new way of thinking and doing. That alone is a success to be proud of.
Funky Monkey Keyboard Classes’ Easter Workshops Funky Monkey Keyboard Classes’ Cheeky Chick workshops for beginners aged 4 to 8 are a perfect opportunity to try out the keyboard and make music the fun way, all with an Easter theme. Children learn in small groups how to write and play the notes C to G, as well as trying some famous tunes
Each week, participants will develop new cricketing skills including batting, bowling and fielding. They will have the chance to play a fast-paced and exciting game of countdown cricket – a new format that mirrors The Hundred. Every child taking part will receive a new Balance Dynamos shirt with their name and number on the back. They will get access to a Dynamos app providing cricket tips, activities and quizzes, alongside skills and tips so that they can practice at home and with their friends. Parents can find out more about Dynamos Cricket and sign their kids up to take part at www.dynamoscricket.co.uk or for All Stars Cricket at www.allstarscricket.co.uk.
How the Performing Arts Benefit Children
Children, who perform, gain skills that extend far beyond the standing ovation. Research shows that children who sing, dance, act and play tend to have enhanced cognitive, motor, and social development too. Stagecoach know that the act of performing on stage can enrich your child’s life in all sorts of surprising ways. Performance skills equip children with the ability to “think on their feet”, using their creativity and imagination. When the play goes wrong, children learn to come up with quick solutions to cover up mistakes and work as a team. We all have moments when we feel nervous. Feeling nervous before performing is completely natural. Children 18
