Strawberry Ripple Ice Cream

As the weather gets warmer (we hope!), what better way to cool yourselves down than a delicious, healthy ice-cream straight from your own kitchen? Mrs Bun the Baker shares her secrets on this healthy sweet treat from her book ‘Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker’. The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.

Repeat for all the strawberries. Avoid creating big pieces as they will only end up as lumps of ice in the final ice-cream.

Ingredients – you will need:

container and place this into the freezer. Be patient as you will need to leave it for at least 6 hours before you can eat the ice-cream! If you take it out 10 minutes before you want it, the finished ice-cream will be easier to scoop.

FROM KITCHEN ZERO

TO BAKING HERO!

15 strawberries 225ml double cream: use extra thick cream, if you prefer – you don’t need to whip it! 100ml sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 75ml single cream 2 tablespoons icing sugar: optional

Method

1. Have a 500ml freezer-friendly container at hand 2. Wash the strawberries and remove their stalks. Get a strawberry,

hold it between your thumb and finger, and squish it into a bowl.

Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

3. Pour the double cream into a jug. Whisk the cream until it’s sticking to the whisk - it should look like ice-cream on top of a cone. Add in the condensed milk, vanilla essence, single cream and the strawberries. 4. Mix the ingredients up for a ripple effect – but don’t over mix or you’ll have pink ice-cream with no swirls! Have a taste. If it’s not sweet enough for you, add in some or all of the icing sugar. 5. Pour the mixture into a 500ml freezer-friendly plastic

Variations

Use other berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries – or use lots of different berries together. Add some fudge pieces and squeeze in some toffee sauce before it goes in the freezer. For chocolate-chip ice-cream, add chunks of your favourite chocolate: plain, milk or white. Or, again, mix them together. Chop and mash a banana for a delicious banana ice-cream. Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net

Air Quality Monitoring Backpacks Trial

A sample of Primary school pupils will carry special backpacks with stateof-the-art air quality sensors on their journey to and from school to help monitor the levels of toxic air young Londoners are exposed to, in a new scheme launched by the Mayor, Sadiq Khan. 250 pupils from five London primary schools in Southwark, Richmond, Greenwich, Haringey and Hammersmith and Fulham will take part in the project, wearing specially adapted backpacks to and from school for a week. The children will use the backpacks like a normal bag (the monitor takes up one pocket, leaving plenty of room for school equipment), allowing the monitors to record pollutant levels on each child’s journey to school and throughout the school day. The data from this study will allow King’s scientists to analyse at which point of their journey to school (or which part of their school day) children are exposed to the most pollution. They will also be able to the compare the exposure of children who have similar journeys but take different routes and travel modes and then make recommendations of how children can reduce their exposure in future. The project itself was devised by City Hall and C40 Cities. Once this approach and technology has been proven in London, the goal is to see it introduced in cities around the world. This Easter, East Sheen Primary School is celebrating the first anniversary of the school’s green wall, which was unveiled a year ago. Our pictures show the ‘before and after’ shots. Pioneered by the entire school community, with funding support from the PTA, grants from the Mayor of London and assistance from Richmond Council, the groundbreaking project took four months to complete and significantly increased pollution protection from traffic on the South Circular Road. The green wall comprises English Ivy (Hedera helix) and a solid acoustic fence attached to the pre-existing brick wall, which separates the school’s playground from Upper Richmond Road West. Before Additional plants and shrubs were also planted on the school premises. East Sheen Primary School’s Headteacher Elizabeth Page told Primary Times, “We are delighted and proud that the green wall came into fruition to protect the children from pollution and make the playgrounds greener and more attractive. Our school is expanding but we retain a small community feel, where the hard work by parents and the PTA make a world of difference.” The school is currently undertaking pollution After monitoring and to mark the first anniversary of the green wall, the children at East Sheen Primary will enjoy a green and flower-themed mufti day. Kew Open Giant Children’s Garden

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is opening a giant new Children’s Garden on 18 May. Covering 10,000m², it has been designed around the elements that plants need to grow: earth, air, sun and water. Children will be able to play and explore as they wind their way through a landscape filled with over 100 mature trees, developing their love of nature, plants and the outdoors along the way. The first element to explore is the Earth Garden, a giant sand pit with a quirky play hut village and a totem pole with unique carvings showing the germination process of an acorn. Next along the trail is the Air Garden, with winding paths, giant windmill flowers, colourful pollen spheres, hammocks, and trampolines as well as a mini amphitheatre nestled under the shade of some of Kew’s largest Eucalyptus trees. The Sun Garden is next - a large open space where children can let their imagination run wild. Intricate pergolas festooned with colourful climbing plants and apple trees trained along a tunnel of hoops will take children on a sensory adventure. Lastly, the Water Garden is filled with water pumps for kids to control the flow of the water into a splash pool. Stepping stones will encourage children to hop along the different streams and engage them in the importance of the water cycle to plants. The new Children’s Garden will be a treat for all. For more information, please visit www.kew.org.

Step back in Time at Ham House and Garden

A grand mansion like Ham House and Garden can’t operate without a lot of help. Today a team of staff and volunteers alike help to run the house and keep it open, but in the past fleets of servants, gardeners, maids and butlers lived and worked here to make sure the mansion lived up to the Duke and Duchess’s high standards. Wonder what that was like? Step back in time to become a servant for the day and follow your instructions precisely to complete all the tasks and chores. You might have to sort vegetables for the cook, tidy and sweep in the scullery, lend a hand to the gardeners, and do the laundry. Sound tiring? Not to worry, there will certainly be somewhere you can have a lie down afterwards. Activities are free but if you want to learn more, the activity book is available for £2 which includes more fun facts and games to do at Ham House or at home. Normal admission prices to Ham House and Garden apply, free for National Trust members. For more information, go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ham-house-and-garden

Battersea Park Children’s Zoo... who will you see?

Unicorn Land is the most magical experience your child will ever have, with memories to last a lifetime. The UK’s first ever unicorn tour is a wonderful opportunity for children to meet, groom and ride unicorns or have a memorable trip in a unicorn princess carriage. Unicorn Land is an enchanting world, with all things unicorn, including a unicorn inflatable rodeo, theatre shows, unicorn DJ, face painting, bouncy castle, unicorn dress up and the chance to take part in the Great British Slime Off competition with celebrity judges. The idea for Unicorn Land came from 9-yearold Alyssya Carrington, whose father Stafford, an award-winning entrepreneur and event organiser, took her to visit a unicorn for her birthday. When Stafford saw the huge smile on his daughter’s face, he knew he wanted other parents and children to experience the same magical feeling he did when Alyssya first saw a unicorn. Unicorn Dream has partnered with Make a Wish, to make seriously ill children’s wishes come true. For every 10 Unicorn Land tickets sold, they will grant a magical wish for a very special child, giving away hundreds of tickets. During the tour, unicorns will be visiting sick children, spreading happiness and magic across the country. For 15% off your magical experience at Unicorn Land, book today using your exclusive discount code PRIME15 at www.unicorndream.co.uk. Prices are from £37 and adults go free. Primary school teachers across the UK can join the Let’s Play programme, giving them access to cross-curricular resources to transform theatre-making in schools. It was developed by the National Theatre with teachers and school leaders from a broad range of primary schools, aiming to transform creativity and theatre-making, with pupils and teachers learning new skills. The programme allows schools to create an impressive and entertaining school play that everyone will be proud of. Pupils gain confidence and team working skills and teachers learn how to stage high-quality school productions, as well as developing their understanding of creative learning and how to apply those skills in their classrooms. Once registered, schools will gain access to eight new scripts for children to perform, musical scores and backing tracks for original songs and will have the opportunity to complete CPD courses for teachers led by professional theatre makers. Teachers will also get a toolkit, film resources and cross-curricular activities and children will have the opportunity to gain an Arts Award. Let’s Play costs £350 per academic year. Burntwood School

Burntwood School is a highly successful, popular girl’s school with a mixed Sixth Form. The school was recently rebuilt and has won the prestigious Stirling Prize for Architecture. More importantly this means that students have access to state of the art specialist teaching facilities in the Sciences, Media, Art and Design, Performing Arts and Sport. At Burntwood, they believe strongly that all young people should have the opportunity to study and embrace a varied curriculum that will allow them to access academic, creative and practical subjects enabling them to progress to a host of world class further education establishments. Burntwood are proud of the tradition of success that encourages students to be independent, articulate young women who take power and control over their lives in an informed and intelligent way. Burntwood School is recognised as a Science Specialist School and has the coveted ‘Sportsmark’ and ‘Artsmark Gold’ awards. Examination results continue to be excellent at Key Stage 4 and 5. Burntwood School is an inclusive community. This is recognised by the Rights Respecting UNICEF Gold Award. They provide opportunities for all our learners, whether they have special educational needs or are part of their gifted and talented cohort. They believe that students deserve the best and understand the importance of a collaborative approach between staff, students and parents, working together to support the students in reaching their full potential. All of this is embodied in the commitment to provide ‘The best education today for the women of tomorrow’.

WaterAid Voices

International aid charity WaterAid has launched its first-ever voice skill powered for Amazon Alexa. WaterAid Voices, an interactive storytelling experience for schools and families helps to educate children about the state of the world’s water, toilets and hygiene around the world. The skill will take children to a different land entirely to learn about life in the Madagascan village of Tsarafangitra. Through a series of six interactive voice messages, they will learn some handy phrases in the local language, recipes in Malagasy cuisine and how to spot a zebu through quizzes and mini-games. Designed with Key Stage 2 students in mind, this provides the perfect post-school activity for parents who want an interactive, educational and enjoyable past-time for all the family, while raising awareness of an important topic. A shocking one in three of the world’s schools lack adequate toilets, compromising children’s human rights to sanitation and leaving them to either use dirty, unsafe pits, go in the open, or stay at home, resulting in missed school days and loss of potential. WaterAid Voices is one way that the charity hopes to get more people talking about an issue that impacts the lives of many every day, including young people in some of the world’s poorest places. Tips from Peepal Tree Learning

More than a quarter of parents across the UK now choose to use private tutoring as a way to boost their children’s education. Primary Times had a chat with Peepal Tree Learning to find out what you might want to consider in your search. What do you want to achieve?

Consider the level of help you might need and whether it’s for a specific purpose, such as support to pass the 11+ or whether it’s more general confidence building. Share these with the tutor from the start.

How are children engaged?

Children should be encouraged to think creatively and analytically. This approach is essential to 11+ success as the exams require children to think for themselves as opposed to simply regurgitating information.

How is progress measured?

The tutor should explain clearly how progress is measured.Your child is likely to be asked to complete work outside the class schedule, but make sure this works alongside their existing workload and commitments.

What’s the best setting for you?

For some parents, the idea of 1:1 tuition can be attractive, however this can be very costly and for some children, a little too intense. The benefits of a classroom setting mean that children often ‘bounce’ off one another, enriching the experience. Class sizes are also important, so make sure you ask this question.

Is my child comfortable and happy?

Watch the interaction between your child and the tutor and ask your child for feedback. Results are important, but they will only come if your child feels comfortable in the surroundings and with the teacher themselves.

Peepal Tree Learning offers 11+ preparation and revision courses in three comfortable and welcoming settings located in Richmond, Kingston Upon Thames and Sutton. Get in touch to find out about their class schedules, fees and approach to learning success. Email info@peepaltreelearning.com, call 020 8274 9489 or visit www.peepaltreelearning.com for more information.

Little Green Fingers... National Children’s Gardening Week 25 May - 2 June Gardening comes naturally to children. Endlessly curious, children are often delighted to learn first hand where the food on their plate comes from and how big plants grow from tiny seeds. Allowing them to get outdoors and get their hands dirty has incredible benefits and there is no better time to start exploring than National Children’s Gardening Week 2019, which runs from 25 May – 2 June. To help spark your children’s enthusiasm, we have outlined some of our favourite activities to get the kids gardening.

Grow a Hanging Harvest Not everyone has space for a full vegetable patch in their garden, so the humble hanging basket can be a great way to save space, but still pack in the produce. Encourage your children to get their hands messy and fill a lined basket with compost. Put your chosen plants into the compost, and ensure the kids check the basket every day and water regularly. Cherry tomatoes, strawberry plants, chives, basil, parsley and lettuce will all produce loads of tasty food throughout the summer months if cared for well.

Start with Seeds A great way to introduce your children to gardening is simply by planting a packet of seeds on your windowsill. Use an eggbox as your tray and fill each compartment with potting mix and seeds of your choice. Children aren’t always blessed with patience, so produce like radishes, lettuce, basil and salad cress will all grow very quickly and begin to show results within just a few days. Create a Pinecone Bird Feeder Attract different bird species into your garden by combining mixed seeds, lard, cheese and raisins in a mixing bowl. Tie a string to a pinecone and cover it with your sticky mix, ensuring you fill all the holes. Pop in the fridge until set and hang from the different branches in your garden. Hanging some near a window can be a great way to get a close-up view of your flying friends.

Make a Fairy Garden Fairy gardens are an easy gardening activity for kids that will make their imagination run wild. Fill a wooden box, planter or trough with soil and choose a few different plants for the fairies to play around in. Some of our favourites for May and June include pansies, geraniums and hyacinths. Once this is done, encourage your children to choose a variety of mini props and accessories including marbles, pebbles, twigs, lollipop sticks and, of course, the fairies themselves. Build a Bee B&B Bees numbers are falling, so by building them a home you are both having fun gardening with your children and helping the bee populations. You can make one of these easily by cutting the top off a large plastic bottle with scissors (ensure you do this for your children). Gather some bamboo sticks and cut them to the same length as your container, then pack them tightly into your plastic bottle. Using different widths of bamboo is best, as the bees can choose between the different sizes. Attach a hook to the back of your bee house, place in full sun at least one metre off the ground, and simply watch and wait!

Be the next Picasso with Plants Create a picture with a mixture of big, medium and small edible plants with different coloured leaves, flowers or fruit. Plants like lettuce, basil, rocket, swiss chard and salads can be good for background colours of the painting. Bigger plants like chillies, tomatoes, peppers and courgettes can be good for main parts of your painting. Once you’ve picked an area with good sunlight, dig some multi-purpose compost then rake the soil so it’s nice and fine. Divide your canvas into sections using your sand. Go wild with the patterns and mark out a picture, planting different types of edible plant into the different sections of your canvas. Use contrasting colours of leaves, fruit and flowers for the different sections. Over a few weeks you should start to see your picture come to life. Grow a Pea Shoot Sarnie Why go to the supermarket when you can DIY the kids’ packed lunch? Make your own pea shoots perfect for scrumptious sandwiches and salads! Grab a container and put an even amount of multi-purpose compost. Sow the pea or micro-green seeds very thinly on the compost, covering all the soil. Keep the compost damp over the next few days then see they will start to sprout. And voilà! Snip the shoots once they’re four centimetres tall and make way for irresistible sandwiches. The best part is you can put the container back in the window, keep on watering them and they’ll grow back at least three times.
