Enjoy a Family Day with Harlequins
Harlequins are one of rugby union’s oldest and most famous club sides and last year they celebrated their 150th season. Playing their home fixtures at the 14,800-capacity Twickenham Stoop, just a stone’s throw from Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby, Harlequins offer an exciting day out for the entire family. The games themselves are often fast and furious affairs and over their long history, Harlequins have established themselves as pioneers of an exciting and high tempo playing style, known fondly as ‘The Quins Way’. A day out at The Stoop offers so much more than just a rugby game however. Kids can get their faces painted pre-match and supporters can take part in various fan competitions around the ground. The Stoop has a number of food and drinks stands and make sure you look out for the two Harlequins mascots, Charley and Harley Bear, who are on hand for selfies and sing-alongs and help raise the roof throughout the match. The fun doesn’t end with the final whistle either. Children and parents alike can head to the Kings Bar after the game where there is usually live music and also the Players Corner, where members of the team will join fans young and old. Tickets to the upcoming home fixtures cost £16 for adults, £7 for kids and there are membership options too. Visit www.quins.co.uk to book. Photo credit: Getty Images for Harlequins

Out of School Activities Learning to swim is the one sport that could actually one day save your life. It is one of the best forms of exercise as it promotes strength and mobility and improves cardiovascular fitness giving you greater levels of stamina and endurance. Water exercise offers many physical, social and mental benefits including improved strength and flexibility, better muscular endurance and balance and increased energy. It is a sport which, once learned, can be enjoyed with friends or alone. Some people with physical limitations cannot perform land exercises, so swimming is the perfect solution for keeping fit. Exercising in the water is safer than working out on land because water supports your weight and doesn’t strain your back or knees no matter how hard or gently you work. So make sure that you and your children learn to swim – it really is the one sport you can’t be without.

Rehearsal locations are in Hampton Hill, Kingston and Twickenham and children are guided by a professional musical director, choreographer and director on every show. Project fees apply to those cast in the show. Performing rights are purchased from leading licencing agents such as Music Theatre International to ensure that young actors work on scripts which are both commercially successful and appropriate to their age group. Shows are performed at purpose built professional theatres including Epsom Playhouse, Hampton Hill Theatre, The Waterman’s Arts Centre and Questors Theatre.

Why Should your Child Learn to Swim?
READER COMPETITION
Swimming is lots of fun for people of all ages and also provides loads of health benefits which can help to keep you and your children healthy and happy at the same time. What’s more, swimming is the only sport which can save your child’s life. Drowning is still one of the most common causes of accidental death in children, so being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill.
Win 12 weeks of award winning swimming lessons with Everyone Active
Learn to swim in a safe, supportive environment with classes for children aged 4 months old and up at Everyone Active leisure centres. Classes are available up to seven days a week with Swim England qualified teachers who will work with your child to build their confidence in the water. Swimming is a great activity for kids, good for their health and an essential life skill. Choosing your New School with
A Pull Out and Keep Feature The Primary Times 2017 Choosing your New School feature – the definitive guide to open days for that all important decision.
4.
Grades and Statistics
Of course it’s important to look at the grades the school has been achieving, remember to look at the overall statistics as opposed to just the ones from recent history. Final exam results may depend more on the calibre of the original than anything else but tables which purport to show ‘added value’ also have their drawbacks. Each school year can fluctuate significantly depending on the mix of students, so just because results have gone up/down in the last couple of years, it doesn’t mean the overall standard of teaching has. Look at the general pattern of results and compare these to others in the area.
5. The end of the summer holidays marks the beginning of the latest adventure in your child’s life – choosing a secondary school. This task doesn’t have to be a chore however. You and your child can work together to find the perfect place for them to learn, explore and grow. Here is a list of Primary Times’ top ten tips for choosing a school. 1.
Make a List
Even if you think you know which school you want to send your child to, it’s important to visit a few just in case, even if it’s just to reaffirm your original choice. Even the best schools can suit some children more than others. Once you have a list of schools in your area, check to make sure each one is logistically possible – does your child meet the entry requirements? Will they be able to travel there easily?
2.
Open Days
Obviously it’s a good idea to visit all the schools you’re thinking of sending your child to. Pay special attention to the environment – you know your child better than anyone so you know best what working atmosphere is most effective for them. Chat to students as well as teachers. It’s good to know that the people teaching want to be there, but if you want a more honest perception of the school you’re more likely to get it from the students. One of the most important things to look for is whether they’re happy – a happy child inevitably means a better education.
3.
League Tables and Ofsted
With all the statistics floating around about schools, it’s hard to know which to trust. Ultimately these reports aren’t everything, especially as their conclusions are usually based on a few days in a school, but they are all still worth looking at. There is a great resource on the government’s performance information website (head to www.gov.co.uk) which gives a detailed and clear analysis of schools in your area.
Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE
Word of Mouth
Chat to other parents and locals about the different schools. They may know things (both good and bad) which the schools themselves may not have mentioned. It’s always good to hear from other parents what they wish they had/hadn’t done in hindsight and which questions they wish they’d asked.
Making the Step: Primary to Secondary School
At the moment your child is the oldest in the school, but from next September they will suddenly seem so small again. Making that move from primary to secondary school can feel like a giant leap. Education expert and teacher, Dr Stephen Curran, has some helpful tips for parents to get their child through this challenging change.
Be understanding Listen to your child’s apprehensions and help reassure them. If you child has an older sibling or cousin, get them to have a quick chat about what to expect from secondary school. Hearing about the many interesting and exciting aspects of school life will give your child a positive outlook.
Join teams and clubs Encourage your child to take part in the school’s extracurricular activities. Joining school clubs can help build friendships and confidence.
Organisation is key To relieve the stress of the school-run get everything together the night before – materials, books, uniform. Set times for homework to create a structured day and help your child keep up at school. Building a sense of routine at school and home will make your child’s transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible.

Choosing your New School
6.
Extra-curricular Activities
Not all learning takes place in the classroom, and it’s often in after school clubs that your child discovers something they are passionate for and may even want to pursue as a career. Extracurricular clubs also open your child up to new friendship groups as well as potentially being beneficial to their mainstream education.
7. Discipline
We all respond to discipline in different ways. Some thrive under supervision and strict rules whereas others find this limiting and hard to work under. Make sure to find out what disciplinary structures are in place at each school and determine which would work most effectively with your child.
8.
Equal Opportunities
9.
Where are their friends going?
If your child needs SEN support or struggles in a certain area, what structures are in place to aid them and to make sure they don’t fall behind? Although this shouldn’t dramatically affect your choice, it is worth taking into consideration. If your child finds making friends difficult then you don’t want to make moving schools harder with the added aspect of socialising. However this could also be a good opportunity for your child to boost their social skills, so it’s worth chatting it through to decide what is best.
10.
Where will your child be happiest?
When going to open days or evenings make sure to note your child’s initial reaction and how this changes over the course of the event. Ultimately if your child is happy then that’s the best outcome, and hopefully that will be reflected in their results as well. Above all remember not to worry – despite what the media may say, the standard of our secondary schools is still very high and in many cases getting higher. You are simply picking the best environment to unlock your child’s potential.
Wimbledon High
An academic independent school in the heart of Wimbledon, Wimbledon High is a beacon school of the Girls’ Day School Trust. An education at Wimbledon High can start at 4, 7, 11 or 16 years. The Junior School is a small and vibrant community, with its own entity yet benefiting from the facilities of the wider school - a 25m swimming pool and performing arts centre on site and extensive sports grounds nearby. The school runs a creative curriculum ensuring innovative teaching and lots of fun along the way, and plenty of time for co-curricular activities in music, drama, sport and smaller clubs. Almost all girls transfer to Wimbledon High’s Senior School at 11. At GCSE and A level, students achieve consistently excellent exam results. Yet it is Wimbledon High’s pastoral care and their warm and caring community that the school is most proud. Girls grow up to be grounded individuals, who make time for friendships and voluntary service in the community and who throw themselves into school life. They learn leadership skills and how to be resilient along the way. Above all, school is a place where the girls can be themselves, away from the social pressures of a media-driven world. For more details visit www.wimbledonhigh.gdst.net or call 020 8971 0902.
What’s Better than a Day of Sport? A week of sport, that’s what! Sport Relief is back from 17-23 March. As well as The Mile, there’s a week of activities to choose from. It’s the ultimate ‘feel good, do good’ event for any school. It’s the perfect opportunity to have fun, bring the whole school community together, and teach your pupils about the real difference they can make to people’s lives. Put the date in the school calendar now and make sure your pupils don’t miss out. To get you off to a flying start, Primary Times has worked with Sport Relief to put together a free fundraising pack, full of ideas, posters, balloons and stickers. The pack also contains curriculum-linked resources to make sure that your Sport Relief event is also a time for your pupils to learn about the difference between their lives and the lives of others. Save the date and order your free primary fundraising pack at www.sportrelief. com/primarytimes. Last year thousands of schools and nurseries across the country got involved with anything from running a sponsored-mile to taking part in a 24 hour badminton tournament. Everyone had a great time and raised a staggering £6 million in the process. Michelle Golan, from Childs Hill Primary School in North London, sees Sport Relief as a great way for her pupils to learn about the wider world. She told Primary Times, “Our school believes it is extremely important to support Sport Relief. Our pupils always have lots of fun and work together to help improve the lives of those less fortunate than us. The materials produced by Sport Relief are really useful and inspiring, and help our pupils to see how their contributions can help change the lives of others forever.” 14

Bursaries at King’s
King’s has a history of enabling bright young minds of all means to access the school. However enabling children to move from their state primary school to the new opportunities of an independent education in 25 acres of space in the heart of Wimbledon is about more than simply claiming to offer bursarial opportunities. It is about making the move right for the child. Kings’ wish to appeal to the 95% of pupils who attend state primary schools as well as traditional prep schools, was the driving force behind the opening of a new lower school for Years 7 and 8 in 2016. Forty seven boys joined the first ever Year 7 class with more than half coming from maintained schools. The launch of the lower school was the focal point too for Kings’ ongoing fundraising programme. Both the school and donors are keen to ensure pupils of all means feel welcomed and enjoy learning both in the classroom and beyond.

At The Mall they prepare boys for entry into a wide range of independent senior schools. 2017 leavers were awarded places, including scholarships at St Paul’s, Hampton and Reed’s with other pupils gaining places at King’s College School Wimbledon, Westminster, Kingston Grammar, St George’s College and St James School. Most boys join in Reception where entry is non-selective but The Mall does offer an additional, assessed entry point into our recently expanded Year 3, and for 2018 entry only, Year 4. Boys joining in Year 3 soon benefit from the small classes and increasingly specialist teaching they receive. Indeed, by Year 4, they are being taught by subject specialists in every subject, ensuring they meet the high academic standards demanded by senior schools. Outside of the classroom Year 3 boys can play one of a number of musical instruments, experience competitive sports fixtures and take part in performances in our 160 seat theatre. They will also get to go on their first residential trip. If you are considering schools for your son for 7+ or 8+ do go along to the Year 3 Entry Open Morning on Tuesday 31 October. Let them show you how The Mall brings out the best in boys. For more information please visit www.themallschool.org.uk
Newton Prep Goes Green for Silver Newton Prep has had a makeover. Ahead of their Open Day on Saturday 7 October and in time for the new term, the school has planted a green fringe inside its front playground along its Battersea Park Road frontage. No fewer than 60 trees are now providing a verdant barrier against pollution along with a redesigned front wall and fancy modern signage. Now the perimeter of the school lives up to the promise within, with Newton’s state of the art science labs, modern performance spaces and extensive sporting facilities. The green overhaul was the most popular of the stakeholderselected priorities chosen for the school’s 25th anniversary, celebrated throughout 2016-2017. Other Newton@25 initiatives included a sponsored walk of up to 25kms which raised £25,000, 25% each for four chosen charities, the launch of a Silver Symphony at which the school orchestra shadowed musicians from the famous London Mozart Players, and the return visit by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester who officially opened the school back in 1992. Last up was a smash-hit Silver Splash Summer Party for Newton families past, present and future.
The Mall is a successful independent prep school for boys age 4+ in Twickenham From 2019 we will become an 11+ school and boys will leave at the end of Year 6 Non-selective entry into Reception (4+) Entry into our expanded Year 3 (7+) is based on assessment Popular destinations include: Hampton, KCS Wimbledon, St Paul’s & Reed’s Minibuses from: Richmond, Kew, Chiswick and Kingston

Burntwood School
Helen Dorfman, Principal of Burntwood School, told Primary Times, “Choosing a new school for our children can be a daunting experience. I always suggest that it is important to make a careful analysis of the breadth of curriculum offer, whether the school has a good record with regard to examination success and where progression for the youngsters to Higher Education is the norm. A substantial Sixth Form is important, as these can offer a wider range of subjects and more flexibility of subject choice for the young person. A good school will also provide a wide range of sporting and extra-curricular activities as well as excellent dance, drama and music teaching. It is important that every child is treated as an individual and that the school works in partnership with the parents to encourage the very best from the young person. At Burntwood, we encourage our young women to be articulate, thoughtful individuals who are able to express their opinions whilst also being able to listen to and consider the views of others. It is my view that girls benefit greatly from a single sex education where they are free to develop and mature without the pressures of the presence of boys. Of course, this is not necessarily the best choice for every young women and we always recommend visiting a variety of styles of schools in order to compare and contrast and be secure that the school selected will best meet the needs of the young person. Whatever your choice of school, at Burntwood we wish you every success in supporting your child through this important transition.”

Chelsea Academy
Are You Ready For School?
Chelsea Academy is a Church of England secondary school which opened in 2009. It was judged outstanding by both Ofsted and most recently SIAS in 2017. Chelsea Academy combines traditional values and high standards with an innovative approach to learning and teaching and a strong commitment to student leadership. The academy’s Progress 8 score for 2016 was significantly above the national average figure. Visitors to the school have consistently commented on the high standards of behaviour, enthusiasm for learning and confidence of students, as well as the Academy’s £43m building.
It is one of the defining moments of everyone’s lives – the day you start ‘proper’ school. The uniform is perfect, the shiny new shoes are ready and everything has its own name label. As a child, it is the anticipation of what lies ahead - the feeling of growing up and time to practise that independence. As a parent, you feel proud, excited and perhaps a little anxious.
Chelsea Academy have places for 180 students in Year 7, both community and foundation (faith-based). They also have 18 places awarded on the basis of music aptitude, available to children from any school or borough. The Academy’s open evening for Year 7 entry in 2018 is on Thursday 5 October from 6-8.30pm. The Sixth Form open evening is on Thursday 23 November from 6-8pm. You can get more information about Chelsea Academy and complete their supplementary application forms for Foundation (faith) and Music places on their website at www.chelsea-academy. org. You can also email admissions@chelsea-academy.org.
Sutton High School are in the fortunate position for their girls to ‘Discover School’ from six weeks before they turn 3 years old in the school’s nursery classes. Girls ‘dip their toe’ into school life through Sutton’s nurturing learning environment. The girls have qualified teachers in their nursery classes along with teaching assistants, specialist teachers for Music and PE lessons and swimming lessons in the school pool. In addition, during the autumn term Sutton will be running music and storytelling events for girls and boys aged 2–4 designed to build confidence before starting school. The aim is to help make sure parents and children are hopping and skipping down the path when it’s time for the first day. Find out more at www.suttonhigh.gdst.net/discover-juniorschool

developed a schedule of inspirational free sessions for children from Key Stage 1 upwards. Taking place across all eight Royal Parks, the sessions are led by a team of experienced Environmental Educators and have been devised with The Royal Parks’ education partners. With a focus on what an invertebrate is and their form and function, the interactive sessions are tailored to each age group and will take place in the autumn term. In the autumn term there will be a competition to accompany the Mission: Invertebrate sessions. The competition invites schools to design their dream invertebrate habitat in their school grounds and the winning school will have aspects of their design created. Four Good Reasons to Consider Tutoring
Are you thinking about tutoring? Engaging a good tutor can help a child reach their potential, but there should always be a justifiable reason to tutor. Here are four possible reasons why your child might genuinely need a tutor. 1. Entrance exams - the entrance exams at 7+, 11+ or 13+ are a daunting prospect and targeted, experienced tutoring can help. Children need to know exactly what to expect on the day if they are to achieve their best. Working with a tutor also helps motivation and confidence.
Discover the Hidden World of Invertebrates
London schools are being invited to join Mission: Invertebrate to discover the hidden wonders of the invertebrate world. Mapped to the National Curriculum, The Royal Parks has

2. Achievement at school is below their apparent ability - some individual teaching can help your child to reach their potential in these circumstances, and an academic assessment would establish their true ability. You should also examine any issues at school to identify possible reasons. 3. Lacking confidence in their ability - tutoring can provide valuable positive and constructive feedback and boost organisational skills. A good tutor will also help a student’s preparation for new topic areas in the school curriculum, which will boost their confidence. 4. Medical issues or SEND - medical issues can include recovering from an operation or illness and dealing with missed schoolwork or impaired mobility. A new SEND diagnosis might require professional teaching intervention to support and develop new strategies which can transform students’ work and confidence levels.
