Frogs and Toads Need Your Help

Survey results released recently show that sightings of frogs and toads in the UK’s gardens are drying up, with the RSPB calling on people to help them by getting outside this summer to create more ponds and pools in their outdoor space. Results from the RSPB’s wildlife survey, which is part of the Big Garden Birdwatch, show that frogs had been seen in more than three-quarters of gardens across the UK. Despite being the most common non-bird garden visitor nationally, seen at least monthly in close to 40% of gardens, this was 17% fewer regular sightings than the last time they were surveyed in 2014.

You may be new to fostering or you may already foster and are looking for a new agency to support you in your role. Whatever your position, the need for foster carers is constant. To join Chrysalis Care’s diverse pool of foster carers in transforming lives through fostering children and young people, please speak with one of their friendly and knowledgeable staff members on 020 8298 2800, email info@ chrysaliscare.org or visit www.chrysaliscarefostering.org.

Helping Families Cope with Separation and Divorce Dealing with divorce or separation is a dramatic, lifechanging experience for everyone. And if you have children, the end of your intimate, co-parenting relationship can feel like losing your ‘other half’ and hurtling along on some kind of awful emotional roller coaster with its uncontrollable ups and downs. No longer part of a parenting ‘double act’, as a single parent, your children will be observing your behaviour and responses during this difficult time. As they struggle with their own ‘loss’ emotions, it’s likely they’ll be depending on you to be your strong, ‘whole’ self, just when you’re finding it hard to function at your best. Navigating your way through this complex, challenging journey can be really tough so it’s important to find the right specialist support. Because the better you cope, the better your kids will too! Kids Come First offers unique child-focused support and training to suit every separated parent. Booking on a group or private workshop benefits both you and your children so why not call 07789 497 275 or visit www.kidscomefirstuk.co.uk Sponsored by Thameside Family Collaborative Lawyers and Mediators www.thamesidecollablaw.co.uk; info@thamesidecollablaw.co.uk 4

This national pattern was similar for toads which were seen in 20% of UK outdoor spaces on a monthly basis, an alarming 30% fewer gardens than four years ago. The survey included results from more than 174,000 UK gardens. At a quick glance a nature novice may not be able to spot the difference between a frog and a toad. A frog’s skin is smooth and moist and they have a pointed nose, whilst a toad’s skin is warty and dry and their noses are rounded; almost semicircular in shape. In the South East of England, grey squirrels and foxes are by far the most commonly recorded non-avian species seen in gardens. Frogs come in third place while toads and hedgehogs compete for fourth place. Dr Daniel Hayhow, RSPB Conservation Scientist, told Primary Times, “Unfortunately, the sights and sounds of wildlife that were once common to us are sadly becoming more mysterious. There are lots of simple things we can all do in our outdoor spaces to make them perfect for wildlife. Frogs and toads are amphibious creatures meaning that they need a source of water close to their homes to survive. Creating a small pond or pool could make all the difference, whether it’s an old washing-up bowl or something larger.” Photo credit: George McCarthy (rspb-images.com)

Happy Birthday Sooty

Sooty is to celebrate his official 70th birthday on Thursday 19 July. The legendary yellow glove puppet was bought on Blackpool North Pier in 1948 by Harry Corbett, who was looking to entertain his children whilst on their summer holiday. Having been on the hands of Harry’s son Matthew Corbett during the 70s/80s/90s, Sooty has now been fronted for twenty years on ITV by Richard Cadell. Joined by his trusty sidekicks Sweep and Soo, Sooty’s appeal has continued to endure across generations of families. For his 70th birthday, Sooty has decided to film a brand new series of The Sooty Show. These six brilliant new episodes will be available to watch later this year on Sooty’s brand new YouTube channel, and will feature cameos from some of Sooty’s celebrity friends, including Peter Andre, John Challis and Lisa Riley. The brand-new YouTube channel will also showcase some of The Sooty Show’s best episodes from Sooty’s 70 years as well as exclusive educational content and activities.

Meet Ruby and Garnet. They’re twins – identical, inseparable and do absolutely everything together. However, their lives are about to change. Recently, Dad’s gone a bit weird. He’s been acting strange ever since he started dating that frizzy dizzy Rose, and now he’s gone and bought a bookshop in the country. Vicky Ireland’s funny and gripping stage adaptation is based on Jacqueline Wilson’s multi award-winning book and is the perfect summer treat for ages 7 and up. Get ready for twin trouble playing at Polka Theatre, Wimbledon until Sunday 5 August. There will be an audio described performance and relaxed performance on 28 July. To book tickets and for more information, please visit www.polkatheatre.com.

Prepare yourselves for two amazing shows with Horrible Histories live on stage!

Terrible Tudors will take you on an entertaining and educational journey into the past as you go from the horrible Henries to the end of evil Elizabeth. Hear the legends (and the lies!) about the torturing Tudors. Find out the fate of Henry’s headless wives and his punch up with the Pope, meet Bloody Mary and see Ed fall dead in his bed. See if you can survive the Spanish Armada as it sails into the audience! If the time of the Tudors isn’t historic enough for you, Awful Egyptians goes even further back in time taking kids and parents alike from fascinating Pharaohs to the power of the pyramids. Audiences will discover the foul facts of death and decay with the meanest mummies in Egypt. But you must ask yourselves this - are you ready to rumble with Ramesses the Great? Do you dare to enter through the Gates of the Afterlife? It’s the history of Egypt with the nasty (but fun) bits left in! Using actors and ground-breaking 3D special effects, these two astounding shows prove to be a history lesson guaranteed to absorb both young and old. Better, Sutton Sports Village Holiday Club, offers a wide variety of activities from basketball and dodgeball to crafts and quiet time, athletics and Nerf Wars to team games and free time. Better are even including trampolining sessions in their brand new Trampoline Park once it opens. So if your kids are looking for adventure, want to try out different sports and activities, make new friends and they have lots of energy to burn, they are guaranteed to have fun, especially as the Kids Activity Instructors are actually big kids themselves. Award-winning youth-production company Dramacube have secured the performing rights for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The show is based on the classic C. S. Lewis tale of the fabulous land of Narnia which is rescued from the evil of the White Witch by the mighty Aslan and, from the other side of the wardrobe, two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve. The musical adaptation by Irita Kutchmy is designed for young people and beautifully captures the mood and drama of the novel’s supernatural setting and makes for a wonderful Christmas show for all the family to enjoy. The production will be staged at the impressive Hampton Hill Theatre in December with auditions for children aged 7-14 taking place in early September for Twickenham and Hampton Hill casts. Full details of the creative team will be announced shortly, but it is expected that new Artistic Director, Matthew Bunn will head up the production. It will follow on from the Dramacube summer holiday Moana workshops which are running in July and August at the Exchange Theatre, Twickenham and St. Mary’s University, Strawberry Hill. For information regarding auditions please visit www. dramacubeproductions.co.uk or email contact@dramacube.co.uk.

Summer Camps & Courses

Harlequins Rugby Camps

Harlequins Rugby Camps offer a fun and comprehensive coaching programme during school holidays across the South East of England. The camps are a great way to develop new skills, new friendships and a chance for children to learn to play the Quins Way. The camps are a specially created programme underpinned by the Quins way, TRUE. Harlequins encourage all participants to play with Tempo, to be Ruthless, to be Unpredictable and Enjoy everything they do. Furthermore the camps will promote the core values of Rugby - teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. Their camps are developed and delivered with the Harlequins Academy programme, to cover all abilities and positions. If your child is a complete beginner or the next Mike Brown, Danny Care or Marcus Smith, the camps provide the ideal mix of games and technical coaching delivered in a fun, safe and professional rugby club environment. There are plenty of opportunities to join one of the camps with more than 60 camps throughout the season offering tag rugby for under 6s through to under 18s and contact rugby for under 9s and above. Harlequins offer a full day, of skills, games and fun from 9.30am–3.30pm for both age groups. Parents love the camp, with one parent telling Primary Times, “The guys were fantastic - kids loved it and came back each day smiling. Can’t do better than that” and another saying “The boys always come away from the camp days tired and happy. They look forward to the camp all summer and are always sad when it has finished. The strong values that underpin the camps seem to rub off on them and foster a good attitude.” For more details, please visit www.quins.co.uk.

With the end of the school year fast approaching, charity Mary’s Meals are asking you to help impoverished children thrive in school by donating used backpacks to Mary’s Meals. The UK-based school-feeding charity has been transporting lorryloads of school bags to Malawi since 2005. Earlier this year, it was announced that, in total, supporters had gifted an incredible 500,000 filled school bags through The Backpack Project to children receiving life-changing school meals. The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects, which encourage pupils to donate schoolbags and suitable clothing at the end of the final term each year. A backpack – filled with a selection of notepads, pens, school uniform/games kit and basic hygiene items – provides a wonderful gift to an impoverished child and encourages them to excel at school. Supporters can donate complete backpacks and/or individual items.

Delighted Lagia, 13, who attends school in Malawi said, “I’m so happy because I have received a backpack. Inside, I found a dress, pens and a hardcover book. I will use the bag every day to carry pens and books when I am coming to school.” Mary’s Meals currently provides a daily school meal to 1,257,278 children in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Where Mary’s Meals are provided, there is a rise in rates of enrolment, attendance and academic performance. It costs just £13.90 to provide a child with Mary’s Meals for a whole school year, and, as a low-cost charity at least 93p from every £1 donated to Mary’s Meals is spent directly on its charitable work. Seize the Summer with Explore Learning.

Research shows that two thirds of children fall behind in their studies over the summer. Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning, shared her ideas with Primary Times on how you can help your child seize the summer: Start a blog Give your child a note book to jot ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Referencing pictures is a great tool to help encourage children to describe what is happening and get their creativity flowing. Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to. Postcards are only short so are a wonderful way to get your child writing during the holidays. Read, read and read some more Pop a book in your bag so you can use this when travelling on days out. Explore Learn will be uploading weekly activities that you can complete with your child to help keep them engaged with what they are reading.Visit www.explorelearning.co.uk/summer to find out more and download your first activity. Tuition To keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centre is a great option. Avoid the battle ground of getting children to do work at home and take them along to a centre where there are lots of other children getting involved. Explore Learning offers free taster sessions, so get in touch today by calling 03301 243 802. Explore Learning is offering a saving of £50 to the first 65 members who join between 11 July and 11 August.Visit www.explorelearning. co.uk/offer. Terms and conditions apply.

The Windrush Game

An exciting new game has been launched to commemorate 70 years of the Windrush Generation in Britain, with 20% of proceeds going to the Windrush Justice Fund supporting those affected by the recent Windrush scandal. Every Generation Game: Windrush Edition is a storytelling board game that helps families, friends and communities share their history, identity and culture through the telling of stories. In school or education settings, it can be used to inspire learning about modern British history, and the development of multicultural Britain. Picture and timeline cards in the game illustrate key moments in the history of Britain from 1900 to the present day. These encourage players to share personal stories inspired by what they see or come up with imaginative tales sparked by the people and

events depicted. The Windrush Game is a fun and unique way for children to engage with the wider community, and a great activity for community events, playing with older generations in care settings, or at home with family. For more information about the game, visit www.focusgames.com.

InterHigh Juniors

Many parents would welcome an alternative to those stressful mornings – the school run, packed lunches, traffic jams, school uniform, misplaced books and the constant battle against the clock. Having successfully arrived at the school gates, there are still friendship issues, money for school trips, playground mishaps and large classes to contend with. Thousands of parents have already chosen a school that provides an instant solution. After 13 years of running a successful independent online secondary school, InterHigh School is now launching its primary school division InterHigh Juniors. InterHigh Juniors will offer the same quality, flexibility, accessibility and positivity in school as InterHigh, but it will provide a full primary school education. Interhigh Juniors will open Year 5 and Year 6 classes in September. Children from as young as eight will now be able to go to school online and benefit from the rich and engaging experience of the school’s powerful learning platform. Qualified and experienced primary teachers will focus on developing young learners who are inquisitive, vivacious and enterprising. The InterHigh group of schools enables its pupils to develop a love of learning, not only for academic foundations but to equip them with skills for a world of exponential change. Class sizes are small, with a maximum of 15 pupils in any class. This
