Headaches in Children Join the Planet Protectors Friends of the Earth are launching a new club to celebrate and inspire young activists. Aimed at children aged six to ten years old, Friends of the Earth’s new Planet Protectors Club will help young people join the fight to save the planet. By visiting www.friendsoftheearth.co.uk and signing up for a monthly donation, budding Planet Protectors can join a club of environmental activists and receive a welcome pack to get them started on their journey as a climate activist. Along with activist tools such as plastic-free stickers and an activity book, the pack also celebrates those children already doing amazing things, like Elliott Powell. Elliott is a young climate activist who went with his mum to the ‘Mothers Rise Up’ protest march in May, where he made a speech asking the government to stop climate change. Elliott who is just starting secondary school, told Primary Times, “I’m an activist because I want to have a future. It’s more of a problem to children than the adults because this is the world we’re growing up in. We need the adults to act now before it’s too late. We need to do a lot of things and it might sound hard but it’s actually very simple. All we need to do is to take it seriously. My tip - don’t pressurise yourself to do the biggest thing ever. You don’t have to be the next Greta Thunberg. Just do something.”

Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Nagi Barakat of Bupa Cromwell Hospital, explains to Primary Times what causes headaches and how best to treat them. So what are headaches? There are two main types that can affect children; primary headaches, that are not the result of another condition, and secondary headaches, which are caused by another condition. Primary headaches include chronic or recurrent headaches and migraines. Secondary headaches can be caused by a number of different conditions, the most serious of which is a brain tumour. This is very rare and only affects about 3 children in 100,000 per year. How to treat headaches in children Medications used in primary acute headaches include paracetamol and ibuprofen, and sometimes anti-sickness drugs can be used if your child is feeling nauseous. You can help your child to reduce their headaches by making simple lifestyle changes, such as incorporating more relaxation, sleep, healthy meals, plenty of fluids and exercise (when there is no headache present). Seven-year-old Cleans Up with Ocean Invention Disney UK has revealed the winner of its Dream Big, Princess invention competition. Disney’s campaign inspired children to harness the qualities of Disney Princesses, from Ariel’s curiosity to Merida’s bravery, and use their incredible imaginations to come up with invention ideas. The Magic Magnet Plastic Catcher was

invented by winner Hanna, aged 7 from Richmond, to help clean plastic from the oceans. Hanna told Primary Times, “Rubbish in the ocean causes big problems for sea life big and small and makes the ocean really dirty and poisoned. The Magic Magnet Plastic Catcher helps by catching rubbish like plastic from the water using its jagged claws and presses the rubbish automatically so

that it won’t float around and pollute the ocean. Because my invention is on the ocean floor and can detect any live creatures, the sea will still look pretty and no sea life that lives around it will be harmed!” To recognise her work, Hanna has received a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork of herself brought to life by legendary Disney animator, Mark Henn. More inventions inspired by the Disney Princesses can be found at www.littleinventors.org
