As his brainstormed rescue plan for Christina takes shape in thrilling ways, Susan finds herself at the centre of it. Available in cinemas from 16 June.

Monster Island

When young Lucas finds out he’s not really a human; the news changes his whole world. Especially since his first monster transformation happened in front of the most popular kids at school! After unreasonably blaming his dad for keeping his identity a secret, the angry and embarrassed Lucas runs away from home. His search for Monster Island and his real roots takes him on a fabulously scary journey that puts him face-to-face with more tentacles, fangs and far-out situations than he can shake one of his new wings at. Ultimately Lucas learns that being a freak, isn’t freaky - it means you’re a member of a brand new type of family you can proudly call your own.The film will be released in cinemas on 21 July.

Hayley and Miriam have spent the last few weeks finding all the hundreds of listings that we have published. We’re sorry if we couldn’t publish everything we are sent but the summer magazine is our biggest of the year and with so much going on we simply run out of space. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 4 September.

Have a fantastic summer

The Essential Guide to Pond Dipping

Transforming Lives for Almost Twenty Years

Ponds have a huge variety of amazing little creatures just waiting to be discovered. Get your nets and magnifying glasses at the ready and go pond dipping this summer, either in your garden, at your local park or in a local Woodland Trust nature reserve. First on the essential list is getting your equipment – find a net or make one yourself, get a light-coloured shallow tray or plastic container to inspect your findings in, plastic spoons, a magnifying glass to get a closer look, ID sheets and notebook to record your findings and a phone or camera so you can take photos. If you happen to have a garden with a pond, it’s easy to go searching for water creatures at home. But if not, there’s bound to be a pond in a park or other green space not too far away. Some parks and nature reserves have special pond dipping platforms, so have a look online to see if there’s one near you. Follow this handy guide to ensure your pond dipping success. First, scoop some pond water into your container so the little creatures will be happy swimming around in it. Lie on your tummy or kneel by the side of the pond and sweep your net slowly through the water – a figure of eight shape works best. Then take your net out and carefully turn it inside out so the creatures you’ve caught drop into the container. You can then use your spoon to scoop them up and get a closer look. But don’t touch them as you might hurt them. Keep your eyes peeled for what creatures you might find. Counting a creature’s legs can help you identify it. Leeches and bright red bloodworms don’t have any legs. Water beetles, backswimmers and pond skaters have six legs, water spiders and water mites have eight legs and some creatures, such as the water louse, have loads of legs. Don’t forget to look for creatures flying over the surface of the pond too, such as colourful dragonflies and damselflies. Check out the Woodland Trust’s pond dipping guide online for pictures to help you identify your finds, as well as lots of other dipping tips and ideas, including how to make your own net from a pair of old tights. The Woodland Trust would love to hear all about what you found on your pond dipping adventure and see some pictures, so post on their Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter using #NatureDetectives. And if you want more ideas like this through the post, why not become a Woodland Trust Nature Detective? Find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives. Looking forward to some lazy, hazy summer days with your child? Make the most of them with a trip to idyllic Hampton Outdoor Pool, known as South West London’s best kept secret, right next to Royal Bushy Park. Under the supervision of fully qualified staff, children can swim and play in the open air. The grassy area alongside the pool is the perfect place to dry off and soak up the sun; or you can enjoy a cool drink or ice cream at the Sun Deck Café overlooking the water. The main pool is 36 metres long, plus there’s a learner pool dedicated to toddlers and their parents. Twice weekly TNT sessions with a giant pool inflatable, a bouncy castle and fantastic games are a great chance for the kids to let off some steam. Swimming lessons run all summer and beyond for children aged 3 and over, including intensive courses to help children become more confident in the water. Or how about a rookie lifeguard or diving course if your child is aged 8 and over? They can have fun learning lifeguarding and rescue or have a go at diving if they can swim more than 50 metres. The pool is fully inclusive for children with mobility difficulties with a mechanical chair hoist available, as well as special needs instructors on request. ‘The Railway Children’, showing from 29 August – 3 September, thrillingly brings to life a fascinating insight into the Edwardian rural life in this coming of age story, adapted from E Nesbit’s classic novel. When their father mysteriously disappears with two strangers one evening, the lives of Roberta, Peter and Phyllis are turned upside down. Forced to leave the comforts of their privileged London life in exchange for a simple existence in the depths of the Yorkshire countryside, this fractured family soon discover new friendships and an unexpected secret that will change their lives forever. Complete with beautiful period costumes and ingenious designs, this new production promises an uplifting theatrical experience for all ages, packed with intrigue, adventure, joy and jubilation. To book your tickets or for more information, please visit www. atgtickets.com or call the Box Office on 0844 871 7651.

The Baby Disco Dance Hall is a super-fun session of dancing and play with your little ones. Dress to impress in disco style and get your dancing shoes on (that means mums and dads too!) A Primary Times parent had the best time at the show last year, she told us, “In minutes, there wasn’t a mummy, daddy, baby, toddler or child in the house that wasn’t busting some moves….We had a (glitter) ball.” Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco is suitable for 0-5 year olds and is running at 3pm on selected Sundays until 24 September. To book your space or find out more, visit www.underbellyfestival.com or call 08445 458 252.

Children are Stinky

Following a hugely successful sell-out run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016, which earned them the Children’s Choice Award 2016, Circus Trick Tease are bringing their critically acclaimed show Children are Stinky to Underbelly Festival Southbank from 22 – 27 July.

Why toddle when you can dance? Celebrating 5 years of baby boogieing on London’s Southbank, join the resident djmumma, Monski Mouse and her Dancers for 50 minutes of bopping family fun.

Malia Walsh and Chris Carlos deliver a powerhouse of circus talent. Expect dare devil stunts, incredible acrobatics, lightning fast hula hoops, and loads of laughs. Innovative stagecraft combined with mischievous fun leaves adults and children with their jaws on the floor hooting for more.

It’s time to get heads, shoulders, knees and toes bopping along to lashings of swing, pop, rock, latin and more. Selling out shows around the world, find out why Monski Mouse is a hit with the under-fives and their parents/carers.

Children are Stinky will be the most spectacular reverse psychology experiment you have ever seen. The duo’s attempts to prove that kids are stinky are met with messy, ridiculous, hysterical twists. They only succeed in proving that children are awesome and they know it. Set in the 1990s, plenty of in-jokes and a cleverly choreographed nostalgic mash-up

The London Treasure Trail

If you’re looking for a fun low cost day out for the family in London, Step Outside Guide’s ‘The London Treasure Trail’ is ideal. The A5, 32 page, child friendly guide to London is easy to slip into a bag and has lots of information about several of London’s attractions as well as locations of good picnic spots, accessibility information, bus route times and free toilet spots. Baby Tembo, the bronze elephant outside the London School of Economics, acts as the reader’s escort throughout the book. Tembo is there to give you extra tips to make your day even more special, as well as providing lots of facts on the different locations you can visit. All of the information is comprehensive and accurate. Step Outside’s hallmarks are also there - clear maps and directions, beautiful illustrations that engage all ages, and perhaps most importantly the sense of fun and enjoyment which lifts a family day exploring London to a new level. As a bonus, everywhere visited or mentioned in the book is cost-free. There is also a ‘Rest-your-legs page’ to keep children entertained during a much needed break. ‘The London Treasure Trail’ is one in the series of Step Outside Guide Books, each looking at a different aspect of London. The books, available from bookshops or from stepoutsideguides.com, are a bargain at £5. Assemble your family this summer and enjoy a laughter filled day exploring London with Step Outside Guide Books.

Banknote Detectives

Calling all banknote detectives! The Bank of England Museum needs your help this summer to solve the case of the mysterious banknote forger. Could you tell a real banknote from a fake? News has spread that a man who goes by the name of ‘Old Patch’ is forging banknotes, and they look very real. The museum has a drawing of the suspect, but they need your help to reveal his true identity. He was last seen sneaking around the Museum. If you’re lucky he may have left some fingerprints which could be used for evidence. Grab your detectives badge and use your magnifying glass to explore the Museum looking for clues to solve the puzzles. While you’re at the Museum, there are plenty of attractions to make sure you have a fun family day out including a banknote jigsaw, a roller ball game and the opportunity to take part in some safe cracking. You can even hold the museum’s genuine gold bar, which might take you by surprise – it weighs in at an impressive 13 kilos! Activity sheets are also available for children of all ages, with a small prize for everyone who takes part. Admission and all activities are free. Banknote Detectives runs from 24 July to 1 September. You’ll find the Bank of England Museum on Bartholomew Lane attached to the Bank of England. It’s open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm).

Jousting at Hever Castle

The Knights of Royal England will once again delight crowds at Hever Castle this year with the annual Summer Jousting Tournament beginning on 15 and 16 July. Throughout the summer spectators will be treated to exhilarating displays of action, stunts, falls and fights in an authentic arena complete with Royal Box. Battling it out in the saddle and on foot in one-to-one combat, the valiant knights will compete for points to find this season’s ultimate champion. Join the procession from the Castle forecourt as Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and the Knights of Royal England make their way to the Jousting arena. Surrounded by awardwinning gardens and dating back to the 13th century, historic Hever Castle provides a picturesque setting for a fantastic day of jousting. Take a blanket or watch the joust in style from the medieval spectator stands, available for a small cost on a first-come, first-served basis. Then choose which knights you support and cheer them to glory. Jousting tournaments take place on weekends and bank holidays throughout the summer at Hever Castle on 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 July and 12, 13, 19, 20, 25 – 28 August. Happy Birthday School Food Matters

During June, 500 children came together at Westminster Abbey’s magical College Garden for a huge picnic to celebrate the 10th birthday of school food charity School Food Matters. The day saw the children pedalling smoothie bikes, trying to identify exotic fruit, and enjoying a snack attack, before culminating in a picnic-off. The charity, which was founded in 2007, invited 50 schools around London to join them along with celebrity chef Tom Aikens and gardener Chris Collins for a fun packed and food themed celebration. Chris Collins told Primary Times, “School Food Matters is a brilliant charity that helps children connect with food in so many ways, from farming to growing and cooking – Happy Birthday!” At a critical time for school food, with infant free school meals under threat, the picnic was a fantastic opportunity for schools to get together with school food leaders and celebrate all that has been achieved. School Food Matters aims to get children out onto farms, digging on school allotments and to learn how to create healthy meals. The charity now works with hundreds of schools every year and in the last decade has worked directly with thirty thousand children. They also support parents to get the best possible food in their schools. To find out more about School Food Matters, visit www.schoolfoodmatters.org

Punchdrunk INSET Days for Teachers Punchdrunk Enrichment’s school projects focus on the innate creativity of both teachers and pupils whilst delivering curriculum in immersive and imaginative formats. INSETs for these projects continue the legacy of this work by supporting teachers in their own creative practices. A brand new series of INSETs for Primary and Secondary teachers will take place in Punchdrunk’s immersive research and development space at Fallow Cross in Tottenham Hale. Teachers will explore Punchdrunk Enrichment’s creative techniques, be introduced to a range of projects and be given practical tools and support to deliver their own curriculum back in school. 26

3 July - 3 September 17

Punchdrunk Enrichment’s latest project is The Oracles, a cross-platform experience for primary school children that unfolds over several weeks. Inspired by the myth of Hercules and his 12 Labours, the project is designed to engage Key Stage 2 pupils in Greek mythology and mathematics, and improve digital literacy. Playing a tablet game in the classroom introduces pupils to the village of Fallow Cross, and reveals a call to adventure from the Oracles. Alternating between gameplay and visits to Fallow Cross (a real life-size village Punchdrunk have built in Tottenham), the pupils must recover the missing objects to restore protection to the village. Your child will initially start at a comfortable level, with a focus on building a strong foundation in the way they study. Through this they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm before confidently tackling topics they will not have previously studied. At Kumon, learning is always for the long run - the programmes enable students to progress to an advanced level, at their own pace, ensuring they maximise their ability and begin to realise their unlimited potential. For further information and to book your free assessment, contact Instructor Neetal Bhadusia on 020 8707 5612 or email stmargarets@kumoncentre.co.uk.

Motivation, momentum and progress in your child’s learning can be kept firmly alive over the summer, as parents keep their children engaged with the love of learning.Your child doesn’t have to know they are learning, they just need help to stay curious about the world around them, about books or about a favourite topic. Ask your child to read exciting new books with you every day and if you’re travelling at all, encourage them to create a holiday journal or project book based on what you do and see. It will become a treasured record of family travels

The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year 6 school trip but the catch is, it’s a trip to a farm. Over the next days, Malcolm changes. With the help of a magic goat, Malcolm is transformed into a whole series of animals. He thinks differently, speaks differently and eats differently. But will he end up the same as he was before? Sometimes the hardest thing to become is yourself. We have ten signed copies of this hilarious new book for lucky Primary Times readers to win.
