Easter Cooking - Small Chocolate Nest Cakes Easter is the perfect time to get children involved in food preparation as many of the cakes and sweet treats are quick, easy and involve a minimal amount of ‘cooking’. Chocolate ‘Nest’ cakes come in a variety of guises, all pretty simple to make – even for younger children. The simplest ‘Nest’ cakes are rice crispy/cornflake cakes decorated with mini eggs etc. For a particularly ‘nesty’ look shredded wheat can be used. 200g Milk Chocolate Small Chocolate Nest Cakes (serves 12) 200g White Chocolate Ingredients: Plain Chocolate 200–250g Decorations (in this case, various colours of mini-eggs works best.) Shredded Wheat, crushed approx. 85g Method: Method: Buy or bake a round sponge cake. Melt the chocolate in a big bowl over boiling water. Once melted, remove the bowl from Break the milk chocolate into pieces the water and start to mix in the Shredded and melt over a bowl of boiling Wheat. Once all of the cereal has been water. coated in chocolate place the mixture evenly Place broken up Shredded Wheat in 12 paper cases. Decorate as appropriate in a bowl and mix with melted and place in the fridge for a minimum of 1 chocolate until the cereal is completely covered. Leave to one side. hour to set. Melt the white chocolate in a bowl and leave it to cool. Variations: Rice Krispies, Cornflakes, both approx. 85g (use as When the white chocolate has cooled pour it onto the centre of the much or as little as you need for all individual krispies or flakes to be sponge and smooth it over the top and sides of the cake. It does covered). Many recipes use golden syrup and butter but we’ve opted not need to be neat! to keep things simple. If you prefer a sweeter taste use melted Mars Place the milk chocolate ‘nest’ around the sides of the sponge and Bars instead of plain chocolate. The great thing about these cakes is press into place making sure it sticks! that you can experiment with different cereals and chocolate. Cover the top of the cake with mini-eggs. Large Chocolate Nest Cake. Place the cake in the fridge for at least one hour. Ingredients: If bits of the nest don’t stick, melt a little bit more chocolate, let it A round, standard size, sponge cake (classic or chocolate) cool and use that to anchor the nest. 2 large Shredded Wheat

This spring, more than 12,000 young people will see the National Theatre’s tour for younger audiences of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, with these productions visiting 27 schools across the capital and playing on stage at the National Theatre and Stratford Circus. The National Theatre’s latest production of Romeo and Juliet is a modern twist on Shakespeare’s classic love story set against a vibrant urban backdrop with excitement, colour, dancing and live song. A company of eight present a contemporary celebration of Shakespeare’s masterpiece suitable for children aged 8–12yrs. Lisa Burger, Executive Director at the National Theatre told Primary Times, “It is often the logistics of bringing a whole year group to the theatre which can be the barrier to young people accessing world-class theatre. By helping children to see great theatre, we are seeking to inspire children’s learning and create the next generation of audiences and playmakers.” Photo credit: Ellie Kurttz

My First Ballet Enjoy everyone’s favourite rags-to-riches story, in a beautifully adapted ballet version for children aged three and upwards. Cinderella is tormented by her stepsisters and she can only dream of attending the Prince’s glamourous ball. Abandoned to an evening of drudgery, she is visited by her Fairy Godmother who transforms her into a glittering Princess who shall go to the ball.

With a narrator to help the young audience follow the story, and a shortened version of Prokofiev’s ravishing score, this is the perfect introduction to the magic of ballet, and a fantastic family day out. This unique collaboration between English National Ballet and English National Ballet School is choreographed by George Williamson and performed by second year students of English National Ballet School. My First Ballet: Cinderella runs at the New Wimbledon Theatre from Saturday 13 to Sunday 14 May 2017. Book your tickets now at www.atgtickets.com/wimbledon or call 0844 871 7646. Photo credit: ASH

Jigsaw Performing Arts

Feed your children’s imagination and watch their confidence grow. Children across South West London have just completed another fun-filled 11 weeks of drama, singing and dance. Some dazzling end-ofterm shows and mesmerising presentations made for some very happy performing arts tutors. With one term ending and a new term just around the corner, thoughts now turn towards a theatre trip. This April, Jigsaw students and their families are jumping aboard a magic carpet ride and are off to see Disney’s Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End. Meanwhile, a brand-new Jigsaw school is opening in Bushey and children from Jigsaw’s agency, Jigsaw Arts Management, are continuing to appear on both stage and screen. All in all, it’s been an incredibly exciting spring term for Jigsaw, and staff and students alike can’t wait for the next term to get underway. For more information or to book a two week trial, visit www.jigsawarts.co.uk or alternatively you can call 020 8447 4530 and a member of the team will be more than happy to help.

Talent Search at Tennis Avenue Academy

Coaches at Tennis Avenue Academy in New Malden are inviting parents to bring along their children aged 5-9 to have them assessed for their potential, on one of two dates in April (16th or 26th). Over the past few years the academy has produced three players ranked No.1 in Great Britain for their age group (and many other national top 10 players), six players who have represented Great Britain and two Tennis Europe (International) tournament winners. Their players have also won fifteen national tournament titles in various age groups. This is probably the best recent record in the country for converting talent and potential aged 5-9 into success and results aged 10-12. The academy is now looking to find and develop its next generation of champions, starting with the Talent Search in April. Selected children will be offered up to twelve hours of intensive coaching per week, with a limited number of fully sponsored places available, meaning fees are reduced to zero. Assessment is based on future potential rather than current standard, and the focus is on attributes that can be moulded. Children of all playing standards therefore have an equal chance of selection from beginners through to advanced tournament players. Contact 07886 455 661 for details.

Provide love and support Never underestimate the positive impact you can have simply by being a supportive parent. Show an interest, encourage them, try to motivate them by establishing a feel-good factor about the learning, and let them know you are proud of how hard they are working. Encourage them to ask for help if they need it. On the day of an exam or test, your job is simply to ensure your child has a good breakfast and sets off feeling calm and positive, with everything they need for their exam. No last-minute testing or questioning. Remember, all your children need to know is that you love them and that no exam result can affect that. JK Educate offers bespoke support for children’s learning, with academic assessments, specialist tutoring, entrance exam preparation and study skills. Contact one of their experienced consultants on 020 3488 0754 or via jkeducate.co.uk

Education Education Education How Can Parents Reduce Test Stress Exams can be highly stressful at any age, but here are the two main tactics parents can use to reduce stress:

Get organised Starting preparations early can dramatically reduce stress and panic closer to the test date. Make sure your child has everything they need, from coloured pens to study guides. Ensure their work space at home is comfortable and quiet enough for their needs. Routine really helps – and regular breaks are vital to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Schedule in small treats and outings, and ensure they wind down properly before bed time.

Want Your Child to Have Fun Learning?

The team at NumberWorks’nWords fear that with the controversial SATS you might think that fun has gone from learning. Eleven year olds are grappling with clauses, adverbs and prepositions. Seven year olds are expected to ‘expand’ a ‘noun clause’. They suggest several ideas to try. Write for them! Really? If your child has great ideas but struggles getting them down on paper, let them dictate them. It’ll fire up their creative juices. Budding artists often like to plan their stories through pictures. Get them to draw their story, write sentences to describe what they have drawn. Create silly poems using rhymes. Take inspiration from things around you, ‘There’s a fish on that lorry, he’s really very sorry because he left his shoe in an Irish stew.’ Write them down or just enjoy the laughs. At NumberWorks’nWords learning is fun. They get children engaged and interested in learning while adding the grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation. Their aim is to put the fun back into learning. Take your child along for a free English or Maths assessment. Call Julia 020 8543 7333 or Celia 020 8399 1234 or book online at www. numberworksnwords.co.uk.

joined the CPFC Foundation at Bandon Hill Primary School in Sutton to get first-hand experience of its Healthy Eagles programme. The Healthy Eagles programme, run in partnership with Sutton Council, is aimed at inactive or less confident children who find it difficult to take part in PE lessons or go to a sports club. It nurtures children with behavioural issues, teaching them about healthy lifestyles and inspiring them to improve attainment through sport. The confidence students gain on the sports field transfers to the classroom and children learn without knowing it. The programme engages the whole family, helping children improve their health and attitude towards exercise and developing a sporting habit for life. Have Your Design Turned into a Piece of Art by Sir Quentin Blake How do you fancy having one of your designs developed by a famous artist and displayed in a major gallery? That’s exactly what we’re offering in our great competition. Sir Quentin Blake is the artist offering this prize and it’s probably best we let him explain in his own words. “My exhibition is called The Only way To Travel, and it is about ways in which people get from one place to another. None of it is real. Some people are on huge birds or other strange creatures, but most of them are on or in unlikely vehicles, with lots of wheels, wings, propellers, and they are on the ground or in the air. Some are underwater and some even have faces. If you can create some really unlikely vehicles we can have an exhibition of them at the Jerwood Gallery and when I’ve chosen one very unbelievable one, I will do a drawing of it for my exhibition.” The winner will have the chance to meet Quentin Blake at Jerwood Gallery during his private view, with up to 6 tickets for the winner and their family. The winner’s whole class can also go to the exhibition for free at a time to suit. Six runners up will have their work displayed in Jerwood Gallery Studio and they will all receive a Jerwood Gallery Notebook signed by Quentin Blake.
