This time they’re asking you to help them take on poverty and injustice in the UK and across the world by getting your kit on and raising some life-changing cash. So whether you walk, dance, swim, floss or round up your mates for a match, order your free fundraising pack, have fun and help to make a real difference. It’s Game On. Visit www.sportrelief.com for the latest details. Our Easter magazine is published on Monday 16 March so look out for it in schools that week - just in time for World Poetry Day on Saturday 21 March, Mother’s Day/Mothering Sunday on 22 March and Spanish Paella Day on Friday 27 March....! World Book Day is the registered charity behind the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, with a mission to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for

free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. This year’s list of £1 books is the most diverse to date and packed with best-selling authors and illustrators. International bestseller Anthony Horowitz returns to the secret world of MI6 with new classified files from Alex Rider. Onjali Q Raúf, founder of Making Herstory and multiaward-winning author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, shares The Day We Met the Queen. For older readers there is empowering new non-fiction from author of You Are Awesome, award-winning journalist and former Olympian, Matthew Syed. The Kissing Booth (one of Netflix’s most successful films of 2018) continues in The Kissing Booth: Road Trip! by Beth Reekles, and Split, a powerful new story by the author of I Am Thunder and winner of the Branford Boase award, Muhammad Khan, will also be available. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a three year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. The organisation is bringing together some of the most influential people in the country - from celebrities and TV presenters, to politicians and sports stars - to promote reading for pleasure and asking them to #ShareaStory on 5 March. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. World Book Day will be taking place on the 5 March. Konnie Huq Supports the Where’s Wally? Fun Run at the Olympic Park In an exciting Olympic year, on 15 March, the annual Where’s Wally? Fun Run will be coming to the iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the first time. Supported by Walker Books, the home of the London Olympics will see hundreds of runners, families and book lovers dressed up as the popular children’s book character, Wally, all running, jogging or walking to raise money for the National Literacy Trust. The event is a fun day out for the whole family and includes a 10k and 5k run with a 1k version for kids under 12. What’s more, families will also be able to meet children’s author, and former Blue Peter presenter, Konnie Huq. Konnie will be at the Olympic Park on race day to cheer on the runners and sign copies of her debut children’s book, Cookie and the Most Annoying Boy in the World. Last year, around 1,000 participants aged 10 months to 84 years donned their stripes and made their way around Clapham Common to raise over £30,000 for the charity. All proceeds from the event help to change the life stories of disadvantaged children in the UK through literacy. Konnie Huq described the day to Primary Times as, “What a fun and fab way to incorporate both exercise and reading - I can’t wait to see and cheer on all the ‘Wallys’ running! It’ll be a vision in stripes!” Find out more and register for the 2020 Where’s Wally? Fun Run at www.literacytrust.org.uk/.

Information collected by British Trust for Ornithology volunteer nest recorders each year provides an insight into how some of our resident and migratory birds fared during the breeding season. The big winners in 2019 were the tits – blue, great and long tailed tits. Nest Box Challenge gives you the opportunity to help the BTO learn more about nesting birds in the UK. Anyone can take part - all you need to do is register the nest boxes or nests in your garden or local area and record what’s inside at regular intervals during the breeding season. By asking anyone with a box/nest in their garden to monitor it for Nest Box Challenge, BTO can build up an incredibly detailed picture of the breeding success of garden nesting birds across the UK. The information collected can be used to understand more about why some species are increasing while others are declining and to help the BTO find out whether warmer weather and the provision of food can make a difference to the number of chicks that birds are able to raise. In order to take part, you simply need to register and answer a few questions about the garden or green space in which your box/ nest is sited and a bit about the box/nest itself. You will then be able to record details of any birds you see using the box/nest and even what you find when you look inside the nest. Contact www.bto.org for more information. Photo credit: Liz Cutting

The Boy with the Saucepan Hat There’s really only one word to describe this book and that’s ‘FUN’. The Boy with the Saucepan Hat is the hilarious new book from local Kent author Martyn Harvey. When Oliver Todd wakes up with a saucepan stuck on his head, he is obviously a bit cheesed off. But when he gets to the hospital Emergency Room, things go from bad to worse. The book is written in charming rhyming couplets. That sounds complicated but in fact it makes it great fun to read and enhances the comedy. Younger children will enjoy having it read to them while older ones will have a lovely time reading it for themselves. They’ll have to prise it away from their mums and dads first though! Also, if you do have to take a child to hospital, this is the book to take. It will take some of the boredom out of the wait and make the whole experience a bit less scary. Oh and watch out for the dragon or was it a crocodile? (You’ll have to read the book to understand the significance of that). The Boy with the Saucepan Hat by Martyn Harvey is published by Penzance Press. It has its own website www. TheSaucepanHat.co.uk and is available from good High Street bookshops and online via Amazon, Waterstones and Foyles at recommended price of £5.99. 8

Alice’s Adventures Under Ground
The madcap world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice, both In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, is given an extra twist at the Royal Opera House in Gerald Barry’s operatic treatment. Highspeed energy and a riotous sense of humour propel the action forward as Alice plunges down the rabbit hole into the depths of Wonderland. At less than an hour for the whole opera, this short, sharp shot of mayhem is ideal as a family treat. You’ll meet a kaleidoscopic cast of colourful characters in this joyful, headlong rush into a world gone deliciously mad. As well as Alice, all the familiar characters are present, including the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the Red Queen, as well as singing bottles and cakes, the Duchess and her noisy baby, the Cheshire Cat, the Dormouse, the Knave of Hearts who stole the tarts, Humpty Dumpty and the White Knight. Audiences can enjoy a cookery session on the making of tarts, a performance on the Red Queen’s piano, croquet masterclasses and the battle between the Red and White Knights, among other treats. Alice’s Adventures Under Ground opens on 4 February with subsequent performances on selected dates until Sunday 9 February. For more information, visit www.roh.org.uk. Photo credit: Lara Cappelli

Giraffes Can’t Dance – Live On Stage
Now every year in Africa they hold the Jungle Dance, Where every single animal turns up to skip and prance. And this year when the day arrived, poor Gerald felt so sad, Because when it came to dancing, he was really very bad… Gerald the Giraffe longs to go to the great Jungle Dance, but how can he join in when he doesn’t know how to tango or two-step? Everyone knows that giraffes can’t dance! But with a little help from a wise and kind cricket, Gerald discovers his rhythm – because sometimes when you’re different, you just need a different song. The sensitive and nuanced storytelling of Giraffes Can’t Dance is perfect for young children with its important and universal message of acceptance and self-belief. The children will be encouraged to dance to their own tune with Gerald the Giraffe and company of five actors playing warthogs, lions, rhinos, chimps and, of course, the violin-playing cricket. HMS Belfast is giving families the opportunity to take part in two fun and immersive STEM (Science, Maths, Engineering and Technology) related activities taking place during the school holidays, developed with children’s TV presenter, Ben Shires. On board HMS Belfast, families will explore the science and ingenuity needed to keep HMS Belfast and her crew afloat in the immersive activity, Sea Legs. Families will be taken back to 1942, three years after HMS Belfast hit a magnetic mine. They will need to explore the ship and complete a series of tasks including testing how steady they’ll be on choppy seas and figuring out just how to feed 950 men on board with limited rations, before working out the ship’s next destination. The Imperial War Museum is committed to extending curriculum learning outside the classroom. Bookings for schools to visit HMS Belfast are available up to the end of December 2020. They have a number of new digital learning resources available, including STEM resources. Please remember that all schools must book in advance. A visit to HMS Belfast may support studies of the Second World War, Arctic Convoys, Korean War or the River Thames. Discover a unique historic environment with film, photographs, objects and veteran testimonies telling the story of what life was like living and working on board HMS Belfast.
Wimbledon Junior School Students Explore the Great Outdoors
Pupils and staff in the junior school of Wimbledon High School GDST like to embrace the wonder of the natural world in its Wild Girls Outdoor Education programme on Wimbledon Common. Rooted in the belief that childhood experiences should be enhanced by time spent in the great outdoors, the initiative has been designed to bring together principles of discovery and experimentation with learning and connecting to the natural world. Head of Juniors, Claire Boyd, told Primary Times, “Aside from the joy of filling my lungs with fresh air and crunching through the rusty leaves, the magic is always in seeing the enthusiastic and fearless manner shown by our youngest girls as they throw themselves into the common environment, embrace the opportunity to identify leaf species and build a hedgehog den amongst the tree trunks and branches. This is just one example of a full outdoor learning programme.” To find out more about the curriculum, facilities, clubs and activities on offer at the Junior School of Wimbledon High (a proud beacon school of the Girls’ Day School Trust) as well as details of open mornings and tours, please contact the school on 020 8971 0902 or visit their website at www. wimbledonhigh.gdst.net.

Primary Times spoke to founder, Lucy Quick, who told us, “Working with children as a musical theatre actress inspired me to create a drama school that wasn’t about talent or auditions but instead had child development at its heart. From our very first class in Primrose Hill in 2000, we’ve used performing arts to develop what we call the 4 C’s - confidence, communication, coordination and concentration. Today, we have 472 schools across the South East and West of England, over 250 teachers and almost 8000 children attending weekly - we’ve come a very long way. The amazing feedback we receive from parents about the visible difference our classes make to their children’s confidence and self-esteem makes us feel really proud and so pleased that we took that big first step in 2000. We’re not franchised and run all classes ourselves and, over the past 20 years, I’m most proud of my teachers. They are the most inspirational bunch of talented and enthusiastic people you’ll ever meet.” Try a FREE, no-obligation drama class in Kew, Kingston, Richmond, Teddington, Twickenham, Barnes, Battersea, Clapham, Earlsfield, Mortlake, Putney, Southfields, Streatham, Tooting or Wimbledon. Motion Arts Dance Academy offers children aged two and half years and upwards ballet, tap and modern jazz dance classes in Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon and Morden. Lessons run weekly during term time and children can work towards optional Royal Academy of Dance ballet examinations and tap and modern jazz exams with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Students have recently achieved outstanding results in their ballet exams with 75% of pupils achieving a distinction. Recently, the entire school performed in a full-scale production at a local theatre where they were able to gain knowledge and experience of stagecraft first hand. They learnt about aspects such as professional stage make-up and costumes, technical stage lighting and staging. Motion Arts also offers pupils termly theatre trips and competition opportunities. Students enjoy taking part in masterclasses and workshops where they study ballet repertoire from the stage. Free trial classes are always available during term time for prospective students. Family Trave 3G Summer Multi Activity Holiday The three-generational holiday is one of the biggest trends in family travel, where kids, parents and grandparents all holiday together. Activity holiday specialists Undiscovered Mountains offer the perfect getaway to suit everyone. The activity holiday specialists offer a completely flexible, tailor-made activity holiday where each individual guest can choose their very own itinerary – meaning family members can try out some activities alone while also planning in family bonding time with group activities. The Summer Multi Activity Holiday takes place in the Southern French Alps, which are the perfect location for a holiday. With 300 days of sunshine a year, you’re pretty much guaranteed nice weather, and the varied topography of the Alps means you can visit high mountain glaciers and large lakes with beaches all in the same day. One fantastic activity on offer which families can enjoy together is an overnight expedition to a mountain refuge. This totally unique experience is the perfect way for families to reconnect with each other as you head high into the mountains with no WiFi, phones, or any other modern-day distractions. From the refuge’s location you will be able to take in stunning mountain views, and spot plenty of unique wildlife including chamois, marmots and golden eagles. Elsewhere, family members can also choose their own individual activities – meaning the kids can enjoy canyoning, while Mum and Dad take on mountain biking, and the grandparents head out for a spot of bird watching, before all coming back together to share stories of their adventures over a delicious dinner of local cuisine. Guests can choose from a number of activities from tree climbing to mountain biking. There’s also the option to go caving, where travellers will spend half a day exploring the underground labyrinth of the limestone Dévoluy Massif, as well as fly fishing, and bird watching – perfect for the older travellers in your family. An Undiscovered Mountains summer activity holiday also includes a local concierge service which can arrange a host of cultural and sightseeing opportunities including exploring some of the area’s medieval French castles or browsing the local produce at the markets. The Summer Multi Activity Holiday in the Southern French Alps starts from £337 per adult and £278 per child. This includes seven nights in the accommodation of your choice and is available from April - November. For more information, please visit www. undiscoveredmountains.com

Wild In The City
Discover the secret lives of more than 30 extraordinary creatures that share the world’s cities. From red foxes sneaking rides on London buses to leopards prowling the backstreets of Mumbai, this book explores the clever ways animals have adapted to the urban environment and explains how you can help protect these wild neighbours. Crammed with buildings, traffic and people, urban spaces are the last place you’d expect to see wildlife. But all kinds of animals live alongside humans in the hidden corners of towns and cities – from teeny ants living under pavement cracks to pick-pocketing monkeys and spotted hyenas being fed by locals. Within the pages of this book, you’ll travel from city to city, across six different continents, meeting just some of these amazing animals. There are tips on where and when you might see them, what signs to look for and how you can help make cities more nature-friendly places. You’ll also see the conservation status of each animal, from those of least concern to species which are endangered. Wild in the City, written by Kate Baker and Lonely Planet Kids and illustrated by Gianluca Foli is suitable for ages 9 to 12.
