Don’t miss out on Eden Walk’s Letter to Santa competition. All you have to do is write to Santa telling him who originally wrote The Snow Queen. Entrants simply need to write their answer on a letter with their name, age and address on and pop it into Eden Walk’s Special Post Box (located in the Centre Square at Eden Walk) which delivers it first class to the North Pole. The competition closes at 5pm on 15 December. As a thank you, Santa will reply to every letter with a small gift (while stocks last) and the winner of the competition will win a family ticket to see Rose Theatre’s The Snow Queen. Big Game 12 - Harlequins v Leicester Tigers

This Christmas, Harlequins will once again swap the Twickenham Stoop for the Home of English Rugby, Twickenham, for the biggest fixture on the festive sporting calendar, Big Game 12. This year sees a repeat of the inaugural Big Game with Harlequins hosting fierce rivals Leicester Tigers in Round 7 of the 2019/20 Gallagher Premiership on Saturday 28 December, kick-off 4.30pm. Back in 2008, for Big Game 1, the points were shared with a 26-26 draw, but this year the London team will be looking to secure their fourth consecutive victory in the Big Game series. Last year saw Harlequins sell out the 82,000 seater stadium and secure a 20-13 victory over Wasps with tries from both Joe Marchant and Alex Dombrandt, two of Harlequins’ most exciting players. Expect fireworks this year for London’s biggest rugby party because, for the first time ever, Harlequins Women will also play as part of the Big Game running order as they face Leinster Women in a friendly to be contested after the men’s match. The award-winning Big Game prides itself on being a day out for all the family as the worlds of rugby and entertainment combine with spectacular musical performances, jaw-dropping pyrotechnics and fun for all the family. This is the perfect opportunity to round off Christmas by bringing together your family, friends or colleagues for a full day of entertainment both inside and outside the stadium.

Children aged 5 to 13 years are invited to take part in the Leeds Castle BIG Story Writing Challenge by writing an original, fictional story of no more than 900 words. There are two age groups, 5-9 and 10-13. The closing date for entries is 6 March. This year’s theme is ‘One Golden Day’. It’s inspired by an event that took place 500 years ago in 1520 when Henry VIII stayed at Leeds Castle with 5,000 of his courtiers. He was on his way to meet the King of France for a massive jamboree that has since become known as ‘The Field of Cloth of Gold’. Leeds Castle was a royal palace at the time and it was in a key position between London and Dover. Just think what your mum or dad’s reaction might be if you invited a couple of friends for tea and the fridge was empty. Think what it must have been like for the stewards of the castle with 5000 coming to stay and one of them was the King who was known to get pretty grumpy if things weren’t just right. We haven’t even mentioned all the horses and dogs or the luggage – no Easyjet luggage allowance for Henry VIII. Oh and fridges hadn’t been invented yet! Let your imagination go wild on a theme of ‘One Golden Day’.Your story can be set in the past, present or future it’s up to you! Follow us on Twitter - @PT_LondonSandE

The Racehorse Who Learned to Dance When she was young, Clare Balding thought she was a dog. Disappointed to discover she was only human, she did her best to spend every waking hour with dogs and horses. Clare’s new book continues the adventures of young heroine Charlie Bass and her funny family of humans and animals. The Racehorse Who Learned to Dance is the concluding chapter of Clare’s bestselling Charlie Bass trilogy. Charlie’s racehorse has certainly earned the name Noble Warrior. But now Noddy is facing his greatest challenge yet. Charlie’s best friend Polly is still recovering from an accident that left her almost paralysed. But Polly has a real talent with horses, and she and Charlie are determined not to let it go to waste. Can the two best friends find a way to make Polly’s equestrian dreams come true, and forge a new path for the racehorse who wouldn’t gallop? The Racehorse Who Learned to Dance is another aspirational story about overcoming adversity and following your dreams. It is available to buy online and in good high street book stores for a recommended price of £10.99. Clare Balding will also be judging Leeds Castle’s BIG Story Writing Challenge. This year’s theme is ‘One Golden Day’, inspired by an event that took place 500 years ago in 1520 when Henry VIII stayed at Leeds Castle with 5,000 of his courtiers. The challenge encourages children from two age groups (5-9 years and 10-13 years) to write a fictional story of up to 900 words. For more information, visit www.leeds-castle.com 16

Southside are all about having fun and that’s why they put on a great programme of events all year round, especially during the festive season. Whether you’re a kid or just a big kid, there are lots of great things to do. On Saturday 7 December, join PJ Masks’ Catboy, Gekko and Owlette as they soar into Southside for some heroic fun. They will be appearing every hour from 11am to 3pm in front of Waitrose. At each appearance, families and fans will have the chance to meet and greet their favourite characters and take part in an interactive Hero Moves session. Kids can get active and learn how to get ready for adventure, just like the PJ Masks, in this unmissable appearance at Southside’s free and fun-packed event. On Saturday 28 December get ready to throw some shapes on the dance floor at the Southside Kids Club end of year party, running from 12noon to 5pm. Join Southside as they bring a year of fantastic Kids Club events to a close with their end of year celebration. Children will be entertained with a magician, a balloon modeller, some disco dancing, giveaway treats and more. For more information and to book for both events, please visit www. southsidewandsworth.com.

Christmas Traditions at Ham House and Garden

If you’re looking for a more traditional family Christmas, head to Ham House and Garden this winter. During the month of December, the house will be bathed in candlelight as it was always designed to be. The candles may now be flameless but this 17th Century treasure trove still sparkles in the darkness, revealing glittering secrets within. Each room is filled with the glow of candlelight and the scent of spices and dried oranges fill the air. It’s an opportunity to take a moment together, relax and let the magic of Christmas sink in. Even Father Christmas has come to enjoy the splendour in the house where he and your family can have an exclusive get-together. Santa will be opening his doors on 7, 8 and 14 to 23 December.

The use of oranges in the Christmas decorations this year highlights the conservation of the Orangery at Ham House, one of the oldest in the UK and now housing the café. Urgent conservation of the roof and elaborate cornicing continues throughout the winter, but it remains open for hot drinks, cakes, festive kids’ lunches and more. All of which help preserve this special building for generations to come. With school holidays running until early January, there’s also an opportunity to take a more traditional family day out after Christmas. Ham House and Garden offer a family trail and many outdoor walks, a great opportunity to get everyone out in the crisp winter air and to spend time together. To find more information, please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hamhouse-and-garden.

Imagine a Story

More than 1,400 primary school children will become published authors through the Imagine a Story creative writing project delivered with author Sharna Jackson, illustrator Dapo Adeola and publishers Knights Of, as part of Southbank Centre’s Imagine Children’s Festival. In a giant game of consequences, each of the 33 participating schools writes one chapter of a story, responding to a brief outlined by Jackson. Once compiled, the completed novel will be illustrated by Adeola and professionally printed and published by Knights Of. Imagine a Story culminates at the Imagine Festival, back at the Southbank Centre for its nineteenth year from 12 – 23 February next year. The festival provides twelve days of the highest-quality international performance, music, literature, comedy, creativity, parties, participation and free fun for children aged 0-11 and their grownups. All the children’s names will be printed in the final book which will be on sale at the festival and provided free to each participating school library. Grow Your Own Potatoes Project

Launched in 2005, Grow Your Own Potatoes (GYOP) was one of the first primary school based growing projects. Schools that register to take part receive a free growing kit containing everything they need to grow a successful crop. Each school can then enter their produce into a competition. There are several stages to the growth process. Participants will start chitting their seed potatoes on 18 February. The GYOP kit boxes have specially designed built-in chitting trays and seed potatoes for two different varieties, rocket and regional. Potatoes will need to be planted on 3 March and will take 15 weeks to grow. To grow a successful crop of potatoes, they will need light, water, food, space and air. On 16 June it will be time to harvest the potatoes. The two crops should be separated and weighed (in grams) once all the dirt has been washed off. For the chance to win, participants can submit the weights of their rocket crop, regional crop, their largest individual potato and the number of potatoes in a crop from a single variety. Entries are now open for next years’ GYOP. The closing date is Friday 24 January and kits are limited so don’t delay. All submissions for GYOP must be entered before Friday 26 June. For more information, please visit www.growyourownpotatoes.org.uk.

It’s Game On for Sport Relief On your marks, get set… Sport Relief 2020 is on its way! Sport Relief – which will take place from 9–13 March – is a firm fundraising favourite with children across the UK. There’s no better reason to bring together children, staff, families and the local community for a memorable, fun-filled, life-changing day. Money raised by Sport Relief helps to fund amazing organisations across the UK and around the world that are tackling some of the key issues of our time, including homelessness, mental health stigma and domestic abuse. Taking part in fundraising activities makes a fantastic contribution to children’s personal development, enhancing their empathy and understanding of others’ lives, as well as giving them experience of advocacy and active citizenship. Get Ahead of the Game Why not get a head start with planning your Sport Relief fun? • Get the dates on the school calendar: 9–13 March 2020. • Visit www.sportrelief.com/primary for more information and resources from January. • Pre-order your free fundraising pack at www.sportrelief.com/ primarypack. It’s got all you need to get inspired and involved, including activity ideas and stickers. Start thinking now about fundraising ideas! There are lots of quick and easy ways to have fun and raise money. You and the children could: • Wear sports kit for the day in return for a small fee. • Sell Sport Relief wristbands in school. • Organise a Sport Relief Mile and join thousands across the UK as they get sponsored to walk, run, hop, scoot or swim. Or why not think big for Sport Relief 2020? Here’s how Valence School in Westerham, Kent, raised the amazing total of over £3,500 last Sport Relief! Fundraising Superheroes Valence School caters for students aged 4 to 19 who have physical disabilities and complex medical needs. Long-time supporters of Sport Relief, back in 2018 the primary school was transformed into a world of superheroes and imaginary vehicles for a sponsored Mile with a difference. Children and staff arrived for the day dressed up as their favourite superheroes and were divided into houses for a creative challenge. Armed with cardboard, sticky tape, glue and a wheelchair, older and younger children worked together with imagination and ingenuity to create everything from a yellow transformer to a red plane. Excitement mounted as the vehicles approached the start line for the Sport Relief Valence Mile. With Captain America running alongside Batman and Wonder Woman pushing Spiderman, the Mile wasn’t as easy as expected. But with some brave work by the superheroes, all teams made it to the finish. As always, Sport Relief proved a fantastic experience for all involved, bringing the school community together to share in fun, worthwhile activity.
