Calm Little Sore Throats with Throaty Soothe

Brighton Fringe Seeks Budding Artists Children from across Brighton and Hove are being invited to design the cover of the 2018 Brighton Fringe Family Guide. Next year’s Brighton Fringe will run between 4 May and 3 June and Primary Times are again the Family Friendly Media Partner. England’s largest arts festival is challenging children under 11 years of age to create a piece of original cover art inspired by the tagline for Brighton Fringe 2018 - ‘Set Yourself Free’. They should use an A4 piece of paper to design what they think ‘setting yourself free’ looks like. The final cover image will be shrunk down to A5 so they should make sure not to write or draw too small. The winner will see their work on the front of 80,000 Brighton Fringe Family Guides and receive a gift voucher worth £200 to spend on tickets at Brighton Fringe 2018. They will also receive a Gold Friends membership entitling them to 2 for 1 offers on events and many more benefits. Three runners-up will win two tickets to a Brighton Fringe children’s show of their choice. This year’s judging panel includes Child Friendly Brighton, Door22 Creative and The Pebble Trust. The closing date for entries is 20 December. Entrants should include their name, age, school, and parent or guardian’s email on the back of their picture and send the A4 artwork to ‘Set Yourself Free’ Competition, Brighton Fringe Ltd, Brighton MET, Pelham Street, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 4FA. For more information or to ask any questions email marketing@brightonfringe.org.

Sore throats are not fun and can impact children’s (and parents’) eating, sleeping and moods. Thankfully, there is a new sore throat treatment range for children, Throaty Soothe, which combines natural ingredients, free from artificial colours and provides parents and carers with a safe and effective option to help treat sore throats and dry and productive coughs. Sugar free Throaty Soothe syrup can be used from 12 months and contains Icelandic moss and mallow in a cherry flavoured syrup. Available in a strawberry flavour, Throaty Soothe lozenges, for children aged 4 years and older contain Icelandic moss and calcium pantothenate. Calcium pantothenate supports the soothing effect of Icelandic moss.Visit www.throatysoothe.co.uk for more information.

The Highway Rat

Published in 2011, The Highway Rat is a firm favourite among the books of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. It’s now been brought to the screen by Magic Light Pictures, the Oscar-nominated entertainment company. The animated half hour adaptation airs on BBC One as a festive family highlight this Christmas and will be released on DVD and digital download in February. The Highway Rat is about a ravenous rat who craves buns, biscuits and all sweet things. Tearing along the highway, he searches for sugary treats to steal, until his sweet tooth leads him to a sticky end. “Give me your pastries and puddings! Give me your chocolate and cake! For I am the Rat of the Highway, and whatever I want I take.” It’s a swashbuckling tale of bandits and biscuits the whole family will enjoy. It features a host of British acting talent including David Tennant as the Highway Rat, Rob Brydon as the narrator, Nina Sosanya as the Duck, Tom Hollander as the Squirrel and Frances de la Tour as the Rabbit.

Join the Dots for Father Christmas The best way to join these dots is to look at the picture from a distance.Your brain will make the connections and Father Christmas will emerge. We spend a lot of time joining dots in our minds, making connections between events that happen together. If we hear barking and a scratching noise, we guess there’s a dog on the wrong side of a door somewhere. If we walk through a puddle and shortly afterwards our right foot feels wet, we assume our shoe is leaking. Life would be impossible without cause and effect. Everything we do has an effect somewhere and everything that happens was caused by something. For years astronomers were puzzled by the strange behaviours of several shiny dots in the sky. I mean stars. As they watched them through their telescopes, they noticed that every now and then their light went dim for a while, before recovering. But surely a star couldn’t grow dim then bright over and over? Exactly thirty years ago they realised the cause of the dimness was a planet passing between the star and us. Since then we have spotted thousands of ‘exo-planets’, some of which might have life on them. I wonder if Father Christmas visits them. Happy Christmas, Earthlings! It’s amazing how much fun you can have with science. The Brighton Science Festival runs from 10 to 18 February 2018. It’s been dubbed the ‘Oscars of the teaching world’, and last month, Sue Jay of Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School in Horsham was honoured with the highest accolade for her dedication and commitment to the profession. Sue Jay was one of just eleven teachers from across the country to win a ‘Gold Plato’ at the Pearson Teaching Awards when she received the Gold Award for Excellence in Special Needs Education due to her inspirational work in the classroom. Sue was nominated for the accolade by pupils, parents and colleagues from her school. Sue Jay has been teaching children and young adults with complex needs for 37 years. She is passionate about changing the life of every pupil she works with and ensuring that they achieve their full potential in living meaningful and fulfilling lives as independently as possible. Under Sue’s expert leadership and guidance, QE II was the first special school to enter the National Rock Challenge Dance Competition, performing alongside mainstream peers. They were later invited to perform at the National Dance Teachers’ Conference at the Laban Centre in London. Sue introduced Shakespeare to senior students, entering them into a Shakespeare Schools Festival. The school’s production of “Twelfth Night” was selected as one of three nationally to perform at the Lyric Theatre in the West End. The rehearsal reduced QEII’s Ofsted Inspector to tears.

provides life-sustaining and life-changing meals to more than one million of the world’s poorest children every school day. Their idea is simple. They provide a nutritious daily meal in school which attracts chronically hungry children into the classroom where they will receive an education and learn skills that can offer them a route out of poverty. In Malawi, the charity’s largest programme, Mary’s Meals provides a mug of vitamin-enriched maize porridge to more than 800,000 children every day they attend school. World Porridge Day in October celebrated the huge difference a daily mug of porridge can make to the lives of desperately hungry children. More than one million children are already receiving life-changing meals every day, but with 61 million children across the world out of school and many more hungry, the work is just beginning. It costs just 6p to provide a lifechanging meal to a chronically hungry child so every penny raised for Mary’s Meals really makes a difference. Find out more about Mary’s Meals, donate and get some great fundraising ideas from their website www.marysmeals.org. Three generous donors have pledged to match up to £1.9 million worth of donations between 1 November and the 31 December. That means that donations are doubled!

Mincemeat Shortbread Method

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C or Gas Mark 4. 2. Grease a 20 x 30 cm swiss roll style baking tray with butter and line it with greaseproof paper.

This is a delicious recipe for the Christmas period though you may find that you like it so much that you make it all year. It’s pretty simple but you should make sure you have an adult with you especially when you’re using the hot oven.

Ingredients

350g plain flour 225g unsalted butter 100g caster sugar 450g mincemeat (or 900g if you prefer more fruit. We did!) Icing sugar to dust Sifting the flour

3. Sift the flour into a large bowl. 4. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs (or use a food processor).

5. Stir in the sugar. 6. Sprinkle half the mixture onto the baking tray and press down lightly. 7. Spoon the mincemeat on top and spread as evenly as possible. This can

be a bit awkward so you may like to get your adult to help. It’s easier if you’re using the larger quantity of mincemeat. Be careful not to pick up the shortbread mixture. 8. Cover with the remaining mixture and press down lightly with the back of a fork. 9. Bake for 45-50 mins, until lightly browned. 10. Cool for 10 mins. Then cut into 24 squares. 11. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

Snow White will be performed by West End actress Cassie Compton and Simon Howe makes a return to Worthing as Dame Dolly, after playing Dame Able Mable in last year’s production of The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan, and the Woodland Fairy will be played by Louise Cannon. A spectacular production of Aladdin opens at the Regis Centre from 12 December to 2 January. Audiences can expect fantastic family entertainment with up-to-date choreography and music along with beautiful sets and costumes, all scripted and directed to ensure the audiences get the very best from a cast of excellent professionals. It really is the most wonderful time of the year. How many other forms of entertainment can you take everyone from toddlers to grandparents to, together, and for them all to enjoy it equally? It’s simply a glorious family-friendly tradition that is part of so many Christmas festivities. Playing the dame will be the renowned Christopher Marlowe. He told Primary Times, “I haven’t played here before, but I have seen shows here and what I love about the place is that it is just so friendly and welcoming. It makes such a difference.” After the success of last year, the theatre will be holding another relaxed performance on Saturday 16 December at 11am. The sound levels in the auditorium, plus some aspects of the show, will be altered slightly to create a relaxed atmosphere. This performance welcomes groups and families with children on the autistic spectrum, sensory and communication disorders, a learning disability or anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed theatre environment. Tickets for all performances are available from www.alexandratheatre. co.uk or via the Box Office on 01243 861 010.

On Demand in Schools

The National Theatre’s On Demand in Schools service is the theatre’s digital initiative offering acclaimed, curriculumlinked productions, free of charge, to schools across the country. Every primary and secondary school in the UK can access worldclass theatre on demand. The latest production to be added to the On Demand selection is last Christmas’s acclaimed Peter Pan. This wondrously inventive production of JM Barrie’s much loved tale sees a wonderfully headstrong Wendy and her brothers accompany Peter to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await and a riot of magic, music and make-believe ensues. Watch out for an amazing crocodile.

On Demand in Schools complements trips to see live performances, enabling students to study plays day-to-day in their classroom. The plays are recorded in high definition in front of a live theatre audience by the National Theatre’s award-winning NT Live team and are available exclusively to UK schools. Teachers can study key scenes with students or show the full production over a number of lessons. Comprehensive learning resources produced by teachers and leading artists support each play. Luckily, the Ramblers’ annual Festival of Winter Walks is back, from 23 December to 7 January with hundreds of free walks to help with some winter walking inspiration. The Festival of Winter Walks is now in its thirtieth year - so the Ramblers know a thing or two about the joys of getting out and about in the colder weather. From short, festivethemed strolls topped off with a sociable drink to more strenuous stretches to help boost your energy levels, there’s a walk to suit everyone. Many are suitable for families with children. All group walks during the Festival of Winter Walks are free to attend, but if you’re inspired to keep walking, why not join the Ramblers? Your membership will give you access to hundreds of group walks every year, an online library of over 2,500 Ramblers Routes, as well as many other benefits. Education News

Friends of the Earth Teaching Resources

Environmental charity Friends of the Earth has launched a Clean Air Schools Pack, a free educational resource to help primary school students learn about air pollution. The launch of the pack, endorsed by the National Union of Teachers, coincides with new guidance from the National Education Union which urges schools to monitor air pollution and learn about pollution in lessons. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. Dirty air can cause and worsen asthma, impact brain development and even lead to smaller lung development. There are currently over 2000 schools, colleges and nurseries located in places with illegal levels of dirty air. Geared towards Key Stage Two, the packs contain three lesson plans to help transform pupils into budding scientists including air monitoring tubes which allow students to test for the harmful gas nitrogen dioxide. The pupils then get the opportunity to learn campaigning skills to make their voices heard. Muna Suleiman, Friends of the Earth air pollution campaigner told Primary Times, “We know the health effects of air pollution can be especially bad for children. Studies show that dirty air can cause and worsen asthma, impact brain development and can even reduce lung capacity for life. Our children deserve better. That’s why we’re committed to educating this generation about air pollution with our Clean Air Schools Pack.”

School Should Be Enchanting

Chris Calvey, Headmaster of Great Walstead School, West Sussex, told Primary Times about the balancing act of meeting academic rigor whilst maintaining pupils’ excitement and enthusiasm. “School League tables are now very much a part of our lives and pretesting for schools is creeping in at a younger and younger age.You can see the rising pressure on both teachers and the Head to ensure that pupils achieve the highest results. The safest way to do this sees the classroom take on a more teacher led approach where pupils are told the information they need to learn, guided in how to answer questions by rehearsing past papers and even have timetabled lessons on verbal and nonverbal reasoning tests. Such an approach generally ensures that pupils pass their tests but at the cost of genuine enjoyment, pleasure and natural wonderment of school. I believe there is an alternative way in which children can foster their love of learning. By understanding there is more to the process of education than just working to pass a test, they are able to develop a set of skills that enables them to tackle challenges without a fear of failure. Inspired by the book

Does Your Child Stammer?

Did you know that lots of well-known figures including Marilyn Monroe, Rowan Atkinson, Bruce Willis and King George VI had stammers? Stammering (the tendency to repeat or prolong speech sounds, often at the beginning of words) is more common in boys than girls and tends to start between the ages of two and five. Current research shows that about five percent of children start to stammer and one percent continue into adult life. Research is also helping to work out which children are more likely to persist and what sorts of therapy may help. Is there a cure? Not at this stage. Nobody has found a treatment which works for everyone who stammers. What worked for one person may not work for another. However, a thorough assessment by a Speech and Language Therapist will help to determine what your child will need in order to help them with their particular difficulties. There are the four key areas that they assess: Physiological, Speech and Language, Environmental and Psychological Factors. Once all of the information is gained, the therapist will be able to determine which key factors are influencing your child’s stammer and which style of therapy is most suitable for them. This could include direct or indirect therapy, counselling and support, as well as training stammerers and their parents in techniques and strategies to aid their fluency. So if your child stammers, don’t worry. Make an appointment with a speech therapist and explore the issue and the possibilities for treatment.Your child’s confidence – and fluency – will soar.

Education News

‘Educating Ruby – what our children really need to learn’ written by Guy Claxton and Bill Lucas, all the staff at Great Walstead School explored a variety of definitions for the seven aspects that the book identified as developing confidence and character. At Great Walstead we refer to these as our 7Cs - Confidence, Curiosity, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Commitment and Craftsmanship. Each C has an age-appropriate definition for the sections of our school and children are rewarded when they demonstrate these attributes. Since focusing on the 7Cs, we have seen children become far more engaged in their learning process, take responsibility and, as a result, make impressive levels of academic progress where they not only know things, but genuinely understand them – there is a distinct difference. Children only get one chance at their schooling and I believe it is so important that we look to develop the whole person – not just focus on exam results and entry testing. In the 7Cs I have found a set of values and attributes that really inspires the girls and boys in our school and prepares them for the challenges that lie ahead.”

Big Garden Birdwatch

Half a million people are expected to watch and count their garden birds for the 2018 RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in January. The world’s largest garden wildlife survey takes place on 27, 28 and 29 January. Spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in your garden or local green space, then send your results to the RSPB. The house sparrow remained top of the Big Garden Birdwatch rankings, with starling and blackbird rounding off the top three. There was also good news for robins, with the average number seen visiting gardens at its highest level since 1986, helping it climb two places to number seven. As well as counting birds, the RSPB is once again asking participants to log some of the other wildlife they have seen throughout the year. This year, people are being asked to look out for badger, fox, grey squirrel, red squirrel, muntjac deer, roe deer, frog and toad. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2018, watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three days. Only count the birds that land in your garden or local park, not those flying over. Tell the RSPB the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour. For a free Big Garden Birdwatch pack, which includes a bird identification chart, plus RSPB shop voucher and advice to help you attract wildlife to your garden, text BIRD to 70030 or visit www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. Registration for Big Garden Birdwatch 2018 opens 13 December 2017. Photo credits: Andy Hay, Rahul Thanki & Nigel Blake (rspb-images.com)
