Independent School for your four year old - more affordable than you think ‘We can’t possibly afford it – we’re not that sort of family.’ If only I had a pound for every time I’ve heard this! When you actually ‘do the sums’ you might be surprised to discover that a private education could be an option. At Burgess Hill Girls, our mission is to create tomorrow’s women by providing an outstanding, personalised education which inspires every girl to excel. But can you afford what we have to offer? While at first glance, the fees may look daunting, have you considered the potential savings you can make in terms of childcare, meals and after-school clubs. We have calculated that an independent education for a four-year-old starting reception can actually cost as little as £81 per week. Even better, as we offer the Government’s Free Childcare Scheme, you could be eligible for an additional £44 saving per week, resulting in a final cost of only £37 per week or £1,924 per year.

Here is a brief summary of our calculations, please see our website for a full breakdown. Extended School Day At Burgess Hill Girls your child will get up to 20 hours more education a week than they would in a state school. Time you won’t have to cover with childcare, a saving of approximately £100 a week. After-School Clubs As part of our school day and included in the fees are a wide range of after-school clubs. Two clubs a week could save £350 per year on childcare. School Meals Breakfast, lunch and tea are also all included in the fees at Burgess Hill Girls, a potential saving of £437 a year. 15 hours Early Years Entitlement On top of all this, Burgess Hill Girls extends the 15 hours weekly Early Years Free Entitlement to our Reception year. Parents can save £760 a term, until your child turns five. The maximum saving is £2,288 per year, £44 per week. So before you assume that an independent school education is beyond your reach, take a closer look. We’re more affordable than you might think! Liz Laybourn Head, Burgess Hill Girls

Callum Donnelly, Eleanor Snowdon and JezO invite fun-seekers to come aboard as they set sail for Treasure Island. The hilarious trio along with a few other supporting surprises are setting sail during the Easter holidays, so prepare for a very funny, big, bright and breezy swashbuckling time on the high seas. Audiences should prepare to be taken on an amazing and memorable trip into a world of pirates, treasure and mermaids, as one of the nation’s favourite children’s novels is brought to life with a lively (and very child friendly) modern twist. This laugh a minute show is packed with sea shanties, cheering, booing, puppets, colourful costumes, slapstick comedy and maybe even a monkey and a mermaid or two. It’s ideal for all the family. The only question is ‘aaargh’ you ready? Presented by LP Creatives, Treasure Island will be at Chequer Mead Theatre from 17 – 18 April. For more information, please visit www.chequermead.org.uk.

Night to Remember

Have you heard about the Night to Remember midnight walk? It is taking place in Worthing on Saturday 29 June and is raising funds for St Barnabas House hospice. The walk starts at 10.30pm at Worthing Leisure Centre and is open to men, women and children aged 10 and over. You can choose from the 7, 13.1 (half marathon) or 20 mile routes along Worthing seafront, with the 20 mile route taking walkers all the way to Shoreham and back. St Barnabas House are making this year’s walk their biggest to date with live music, starlight stations along the route and over 1,000 walkers taking part. It is a wonderful opportunity to invite all your friends, families and colleagues to join together and walk through the night supporting this local charity. Since 2015, Night to Remember has raised vital funds for the Hospice at Home night sitting service provided by St Barnabas House. While supporters walk through the night, the Hospice at Home Team will be providing care during the night-time hours, often the most difficult time for patients and their families. Registration is open now at www.stbh.org.uk/nighttoremember and includes pre-walk entertainment, exclusive t-shirt, torch, medal, refreshments along the route and breakfast upon return.

Rustington Golf Centre The Rustington Golf Centre’s junior section has gone from strength to strength over the last two and a half years, with around 135 juniors enjoying regular coaching, both at the golf centre and in local schools. The junior programme is based around games, enjoyment and learning, as Rob Chruszcz, a PGA coach who specialises in junior development at Rustington Golf Centre, explained to Primary Times, “Games are a great way for children to develop golf skills and learn the game and, if designed appropriately they enjoy it and get better at it. A big focus in the golf sessions is developing life skills, as much as golf skills. If through golf, juniors can learn about the value of effort and dealing with adversity, I think that’s fantastic.” It is an exciting time for juniors to join Rustington Golf Centre and be part of a fun and rewarding golf programme. Spring Adventures

Why is Spring Arriving Early?

Over the last few months, the Woodland Trust has been receiving reports of early spring activity. From early flowering to animals coming out of hibernation, it appears that signs of spring started arriving very early this year. Information suggests that nature was reacting to the much milder climate this winter. However, with a cold snap still a possibility, some species could suffer. A similar situation happened last year, with early signs of spring being halted by the Beast from the East. This combined with the summer heatwave meant that berries ripened early and conkers began to shrink. Research from the Met Office now suggests that spring is extending by up to a month, with information from the Woodland Trust supporting this. The Woodland Trust received this information through reports made by local nature watchers, named Nature’s Calendar recorders. Anyone can become a recorder, simply by recording what is happening to the nature in your area. You’ll be contributing to a long biological record that dates back as far as 1736. By recording the timings of natural phenomenon, thousands of people have enabled Nature’s Calendar to become the leading survey into how climate change is affecting UK plants and wildlife. For more information, visit www.woodlandtrust. org.uk.

Kids Go Free at Spring Live

Keen for the kids or grandkids to discover the delights of country living this spring? A visit to the Spring Live show in Ardingly, West Sussex, will give the whole family all the inspiration they need and, even better, children under 16 go free. This year’s event, organised by the South of England Agricultural Society, will be held over the May Day bank holiday weekend (5 and 6 May) and promises a jampacked programme of interactive activities to keep everyone entertained. Whilst the family can still enjoy the traditional elements of a country show with maypole dancing, the mini-sheep show, and animal barn, this year’s event will see an exciting twist on the activities. Traditional wood spindling becomes a magical wand making workshop, knights and princesses can be wowed by medieval games and try their hand at axe throwing, animal lovers can get up close to creepy crawlies and reptiles, and wannabe drivers can test their skills on the exhilarating segway or mini monster truck courses. Tickets to Spring Live cost £12 for adults, £10 for senior citizens/ students, and under 16s go free with a paying adult. Tickets are available from www.seas.org.uk and can be bought online in advance for a 10% discount.

Weald and Downland Living Museum

Celebrate Easter with a visit to the Weald and Downland Living Museum near Chichester where you will find a wide range of traditional activities that the whole family will enjoy. There will be woodland walks, play areas and over 50 historic rural buildings to explore, together with traditional farm animals to meet including Shire heavy horses, Saddleback pigs, working Sussex oxen, and teddy bear-faced Southdown sheep and their lambs. From Good Friday (19 April) to Easter Monday (22 April) visitors to the Museum can experience traditional Easter activities and celebrations, which begin with the traditional Good Friday bake in the museum’s new Bakehouse and Winkhurst Tudor kitchen. Activities vary each day and include egg painting, bonnet making and an Easter bonnet parade in the market square on 22 April. Standard admission charges apply and the Museum will be open from 10.30am-5.30pm. Some Easter activities request a donation and these are clearly marked on the activities flyer available from the shop on the day of visit. Spring Adventures

The Big Bluebell Watch

The Big Bluebell Watch will return this spring and, once again, the Woodland Trust needs your help to spot the UK’s bluebells. Last year they collected 48,200 bluebell records across the UK and this year, with your help, the Trust hopes to discover even more. Last year’s records showed that native bluebells are going strong. 80% of the bluebells recorded were native. Non-native bluebell hotspots were as expected - they were mainly recorded in developed areas, and only 2% of them were recorded in woodlands. Last year’s data was used by a variety of organisations and scientists to support their work and was downloaded over 150 times. Get involved this year and record your local bluebell sightings from 2 April until 31 May.You can also help by working to prevent the spread of non-native bluebells and protect the native species in the wild. But remember – never pull up bluebells in the wild, even if you suspect they are non-native. Native bluebells are protected by law and it can be difficult to tell the difference. Be part of something bigger. Support the Woodland Trust and help create, protect and restore habitat for bluebells. To keep up to date with the Big Bluebell Watch, why not sign up to receive email updates and find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk.

UK Southern Book Show

More than 50 authors from across the UK will be signing their books at the UK Southern Book Show at Field Place Manor House Barns in Worthing. The book show is held twice a year, in the spring and autumn and is proving to be a popular attraction. There are two barns to wander through and there you will find friendly authors and a wide range of books to choose from. As well as finding a great book, children can contribute to The Adventures of Catkins, a white rescue cat that likes to go exploring. Add a line, a paragraph or a picture on the day to the story and then find out what happens to Catkins on the show’s website. Everyone is also welcome to dress up as their favourite fictional character and a medal will be given to those that do. Entrance to the show and parking are free, as well as refreshments and cake. The Southern Book Show will take place on Sunday 28 April and will run from 10am - 3pm. To gain your free entrance ticket, please visit www.eventbrite.com. For more information about the event, please visit www.uksouthernbookshow.co.uk.

Easter Fun at Squire’s Garden Centres

Squire’s Garden Centres have plenty of fun things for children to do this Easter holidays. Their popular Create and Grow activities start on Monday 8 April and will run until Thursday 18 April (weekdays only) from 10am-3pm. Children can plant a stylish bucket or watering can with succulent plants and then decorate them with Easter stickers. Participants can take them home and look after them in their bedroom or give them away as an Easter gift. Plant an Easter Container costs £6 per person. Alternatively, you can take part in the Spring Hunt and receive a sweet treat. Look for clues around the garden centre to help find the magic word. Any participants with the correct answers will receive a gourmet chocolate pizza slice. The Spring Hunt costs £2 per entry. Whether your children are interested in growing plants or eating chocolate, there’s something for everyone at Squire’s. Each activity will take around 20 minutes, and there’s no need to book, simply turn up on the day. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Christ’s Hospital Bursary Applications

Are you aware of a child in your school who would benefit from a boarding education, regardless of family means? Christ’s Hospital near Horsham in West Sussex is inviting applications for bursary (fee assisted) places which can cover up to 100% of fees. Current Year 5 pupils who are considering secondary education in September 2020 are being invited to apply. Simon Reid, Headmaster of the school, told Primary Times, “All candidates applying for a place are assessed on their potential, both academically and the broader curriculum opportunities. Currently means-tested bursaries are granted to over 660 of our (900) pupils. 13% of those receive a free place with over 35% paying less than 10% of the full boarding fee. Children attending the school are provided with uniforms, meals, accommodation plus all teaching and learning materials.” The closing date for applications for September 2020 entry into Year 7 is early September 2019. Christ’s Hospital has an Open Morning on Saturday 27 April for interested families. Everyone who visits is warmly welcomed and is given the opportunity of a full tour of the school plus the chance to meet staff and pupils.
