Wear A Hat Day

Get involved in Wear A Hat Day on Thursday 29 March (or any day in March) to help raise funds for research into brain tumours. The devastating disease kills more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. To date, just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours.

Ski Glory for Burgess Hill Girls

Triumphant pupils from Burgess Hill Girls delivered their best-ever results at the prestigious Independent School Ski and Snowboard Championships in the French Alps, bringing home a clutch of medals from the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Team Parallel individual and team events. There were 360 competitors from all over the country at Les Deux Alpes, where the championships were held, including 150 girls aged from 9 to 18. Among the outstanding results were nine-year-old Georgina Hogbin, who won Individual Gold Medals in the under-nines category of the Slalom and Giant Slalom and was a member of the team which won team Gold in the same two events. The senior team’s bronze medal in the Slalom was also a huge achievement. This is only the school’s third year of ski racing and their success is testament to all the hard work and commitment the girls have shown throughout the year. Burgess Hill constantly strives to inspire and encourage its girls to achieve, find out more at www.burgesshillgirls.com.

Capturing the Beauty of the South Downs

Organic dairy farm and green waste recycling enterprise, The Woodhorn Group has created a free educational resource for schools to highlight the importance of recycling garden waste. The Green Waste Story education pack is designed to teach children the environmental benefits of recycling garden waste. It includes a video and an activity pack that demonstrates the process in which local green waste is turned into nutrient rich soil conditioners and compost. Filmed at The Woodhorn Group’s waste site, the Green Waste Story video takes pupils through the 14 week composting production cycle, showing each carefully controlled stage of the journey from the waste bin collection right the way through to final compost. The Woodhorn Group also offer free farm tours and talks to local schools at their farm near Chichester. The free farm tours give pupils the opportunity to learn more about the operation of an organic farm from animal welfare to protecting the local wildlife that inhabit the farm. To request your free educational pack or to arrange a farm tour, write to The Woodhorn Group, Woodhorn Business Centre, Woodhorn Lane, Oving, West Sussex PO20 2BX or for more information visit www. woodhorngroup.co.uk.

Ron De’Ath’s winning picture, entitled ‘Harvest Home’, captured the theme of ‘Growing Places’ with a story of farmers as stewards, caring for the National Park. Second place went to Dominic Vacher for ‘Staredown’, featuring a moody crowd of cattle captured on Tegdown Hill near Brighton. The judges were impressed by the bold, almost human, composition and high level of detail in the picture.

An extraordinary composition capturing the shifting seasons from summer to autumn has won first place in the South Downs National Park photo competition 2017/18.

The Unsung Stars of the Ocean

Visitors to Sea Life Brighton this Half Term are in for a treat as the aquarium unveils its dazzling new creature installation, Sea Stars, which will open to the public on 10 February. Featuring more than 170 sensational sea dwellers from across the world, Sea Stars is the UK’s largest celebration of one of the ocean’s most visually captivating, and most important creatures, the humble ‘star fish’. Although the image of ‘star fish’ is used frequently – even featuring in the Sea Life Brighton logo – visitors should not be fooled. These creatures come in a range of different shapes, sizes and colours and, far from the traditional fivearmed sea star that is easily recognisable, some can have up to 200 arms. As well as a host of enchanting creatures, visitors to Sea Stars will have the opportunity to learn about the vital role that ‘star fish’ play in the ocean’s eco-systems and why they are often referred to as ‘keystone species’ in their habitats. Eagle-eyed visitors will find out why ‘star fish’ shouldn’t really be called ‘star fish’ at all. With creatures aplenty and a range of interactive and sensoryled activities, Sea Stars will provide education as well as fun and entertainment for visitors of all ages this February Half Term and beyond. Sea Life Brighton is open from 10am every day.Visitors can save up to 40% by booking in advance online.Visit www.visitsealife.com/brighton or call 01273 604 234 for more information.

From coding to chemistry, from engineering to electrostatics, from microbes to microscopes and back again, it’s sure to make Half Term go with a (big) bang and a quantum leap into the unknown. Living Streets is on the hunt for the next young budding designers to design a badge that can be used as a prize in the year-round WOW walk to school challenge which rewards pupils for walking to school once a week with collectable WOW badges. Every year over 100,000 children take part in the competition, making it one the UK’s biggest art competitions. Of the designs received, eleven are turned into the monthly badges with winners receiving prizes for themselves and their school, as well as the prestigious accolade of seeing their designs turned into more than 450,000 badges for use in over 2,000 schools across the UK during the next academic year. Our picture shows last year’s winner, Ella from Blackthorns Community Primary Academy in Haywards Heath with her design.

Education News

Two bursary places covering the full cost of a child’s education for ten years, from the age of 8 to 18, are available to children who currently attend state primary school. The 100% bursaries on offer at Cumnor House Sussex from the age of 8 to 13 continue at one of Cumnor’s thirteen independent senior school partners from the age of 13 to 18 – thereby supporting each child to the end of their school life. The two bursaries offered each year are means-tested and are awarded to children who excel academically or show particular potential in art, drama, music or sport. The bursaries are meanstested and children must be about to start Year 4 in September 2018. The deadline for applications is 30 April. The selection process involves completing a means-tested Bursary and Registration form. Children will then be invited to attend an ‘experience day’ at Cumnor during which they will be interviewed, undergo some academic tests and be given the opportunity to show their talent, as appropriate, in art, music, drama or sport. The parent or parents will be visited with a view to ensuring that on-going support is in place for the whole family and places will be offered depending on the particular degree of promise shown by each child. Anyone interested in looking into this opportunity is encouraged to contact Cecilia Desmond, Registrar, on 01825 792 006 or registrar@ cumnor.co.uk. Affordable Independent Education at Burgess Hill

It’s easy to think independent schools are way out of your budget without doing any research. However, many independent schools like Burgess Hill Girls are more affordable than you think. Burgess Hill Girls’ mission is to create tomorrow’s women by providing an outstanding, personalised education which inspires every girl to excel. At first glance, the fees may look daunting, but they include significant potential savings in terms of childcare, meals and after-school clubs. When you do the sums, an independent education for a four-year-old starting reception can work out to as little as £72 per week. At Burgess Hill Girls your child will get up to 20 hours more education a week than they would at a school in the maintained sector. This is time you won’t have to cover with childcare, making a saving of approximately £100 a week. As part of the school day and included in Burgess Hill fees are a wide range of after-school clubs. Two clubs a week could save £350 per year on childcare. Breakfast, lunch and tea are also all included in the fees at Burgess Hill Girls, a potential saving of £437 a year. On top of all this, Burgess Hill Girls extends the 15 hours weekly Early Years Free Entitlement to the Reception year. Parents can save over 30%, or £760 a term. In September 2018, the school will also offer the new 30 hours weekly entitlement. So before you assume that an independent school education is beyond your reach, take a closer look at www.burgesshillgirls.com. Burgess Hill Girls is more affordable than you might think.

Explore Ancient Worlds

Ancient Worlds is an exciting new historical and archaeological resource for teachers and parents providing inspirational learning resources on curriculum-friendly aspects of the past. Handbooks are currently available on Mesolithic and Neolithic Britain with accompanying worksheets and suggested activities. Chris Butler and Annalie Seaman from the Sussex School of Archaeology came up with the idea that the world needs more userfriendly resources on prehistory, history and archaeology topics. With years of experience in archaeology and the study of all things old, they created Ancient Worlds to enable children to learn about their inherited ancestry as soon as possible. The resources will help teachers, home schoolers and parents prepare fun-packed sessions on history and prehistory for children from 4 to 18, including ideas for activities based on archaeology, experimental archaeology, art, craft, science, maths, geology and creative writing. Coming soon is an exciting range of resources for ‘A Year at Archaeology Club’, including all the preparation, suggestions and ideas you need to run an after-school archaeology club. More resources on subjects as diverse as Ancient Egypt, Romans and Bronze Age Britain are also under preparation, sign up to the mailing list to stay informed. Inspire your children to explore Ancient Worlds at www. ancientworlds.org.

Exploration and Discovery

Get creative and enter the British Science Association’s annual poster competition, which challenges children from nursery to Year 9 to create posters on this year’s theme of exploration and discovery. Your students can make their poster about anything around the theme, from space travel and futuristic advances to iconic discoveries in science. The five best posters from your school can be entered into the UK-wide competition with the chance for students to win an array of prizes. Entrants will be judged within four age categories: Early Years (nursery and reception), Infant (Years 1-3), Junior (Years 4-6) and Senior (Years 7 to 9). Entries from youth groups and other organisations are also welcome in addition to schools. Entrants can be teams or individuals, however each school/youth group can only enter up to a maximum of five entries. Entries must be 2D and submitted on one side of A4 or A3 paper only. Posters must include the entrant’s name (all names if a team) and age (all ages if a team), age category (of the oldest team member) as well as the school/youth group name and address. Once your students have completed their posters, check the competition details online at www.britishscienceweek.org before sending your top five entries to: Discovery and Exploration Poster Competition, British Science Association, Wellcome Wolfson Building, 165 Queen’s Gate, London, SW7 5HD. The competition closes on Friday 6 April at 6pm. A Primary Resource Pack for 2018 is now available to download from the British Science Week website. It’s full of ideas for teachers and parents to help encourage young people to think about everyday discoveries and how they affect their lives by exploring science in the world all around us.

Christ’s Hospital - A School like No Other.

Christ’s Hospital offers its pupils something very distinctive in UK independent education. Pupils come from a wide range and diverse mix of backgrounds. Christ’s Hospital is one of the oldest boarding schools and one of only four coeducational full boarding schools in the country. Before the School moved to Horsham, Christ’s Hospital was originally a London school (1552–1902) and looked after the city’s poor and orphaned children. The City of London Corporation, along with a wealth of donors continue to support the School’s ethos and charitable mission. Christ’s Hospital is unashamedly academic – with 98% of pupils moving on to the leading universities in this country and abroad. However, many key lessons are learnt beyond the classroom and Christ’s Hospital’s broader curriculum opportunities are remarkable. The pupils at Christ’s Hospital receive much of the very best an independent education can provide. Primary Times spoke to Jack, in Year 7, who started at Christ’s Hospital last September. He told us, “My new school, Christ’s Hospital is amazing. It’s really fun boarding because it’s basically a big sleepover. The food is great and each morning we have a fry up. It’s really fun being able to march into lunch each day. I am enjoying my lessons and my favourite lessons are drama, science, PE and maths! In total, we have 18 different subjects which is mad. I have lots of responsibilities now and it was a really big step for me coming here but it was definitely worth it.”
