inside this issue.... Primary Times is now printed on recycled paper throughout, from 100% postconsumer waste, made in Europe by a paper mill that is certified and supports responsible forestry.

Our advertisers are what keeps Primary Times free for all our thousands of readers - 365,000 magazines are published from this office, seven times a year - so please support them when you can and do let them know you read about them in Primary Times. Sparkly Fireworks Night will soon be here. There are some really useful guidelines available for firework safety on the Fire Service website. Take a look at www.fireservice.co.uk/safety/ firework-safety. They have tips on how to keep children safe, who should use sparklers, where to buy fireworks, which ones to buy, how to set them off and what you will need on the night. Schools Go Down on the Farm

Primary school pupils have been getting a taste of life on the farm with The Woodhorn Group. The Woodhorn Group is a family-run organic dairy and arable farm that has been farming on the Chichester Plain and South Downs since 1882. With a 250-strong organic dairy herd, the farm produces organic milk for The Organic Milk Cooperative (OMSCO) who, amongst others, supply Yeo Valley organic yoghurts and desserts as well as fresh organic milk to Sainsbury’s.

Christmas Shows at the Regis Centre

The Regis Centre has family entertainment all sewn up this Christmas. For the little ones, Santa’s Christmas Wish on Friday 1 December is the perfect introduction to the theatre. Join a fun, festive, musical adventure to give Santa the very best Christmas, then meet him at his home in the North Pole! There every child will receive a special present from Father Christmas in the popular meet, greet and treat after the most Christmassy Christmas show ever! For the entire family, the Regis Centre present this year’s spectacular pantomime - Aladdin. Join them this Christmas for a Far Eastern adventure and travel to Peking on a magical journey full of fun, mayhem, love, villainy and mystery. With stunning scenery, outrageous costumes and a fabulous cast, this promises to be the perfect festive treat for both young and old. Aladdin runs from 12 December to 2 January. To book tickets and find out more, visit the venue’s website at www.regiscentre.co.uk

As part of their community engagement programme, The Woodhorn Group offer free farm tours to local schools to give pupils the opportunity to learn more about the operation of an organic farm, and teach an appreciation of the local landscape. The tours allow the class to get up close to the cows, learn about the dairy herd and take a look behind the scenes in the dairy parlour. One of the highlights is the tractor-trailer ride, which allows the children to have a fuller picture of life on a farm. The Woodhorn Group’s farming methods encourages weeds and wild flowers which then act as a habitat for a wide range of insects, small mammals and ground living birds. This provides the perfect setting for schools to go on a hedgerow safari. Many of the young visitors really enjoy identifying the variety of insects and wildlife around the farm. If you think that your school might like to go along or for more information on the farm and farm tours generally, please visit www.woodhorngroup.co.uk or email tracy@woodhorngroup.co.uk

For the last year, Billingshurst School Councillors have been working with students and local neighbours to try and make the daily walk and drive to and from school safer. A survey of children revealed that they didn’t feel safe because of inconsiderate parking and illegal and dangerous driving. Many were also concerned for the safety of John the Crossing Patrol having seen cars ‘drive through’ this manned crossing. Eager Billingshurst students decided to tackle the dangerous roads with a new campaign. A school-wide competition chose the winning designs to be put on display outside the school. The children’s message to drivers is: Drive as if the Police are Watching! Keep us Safe. The campaign has already been recognised by The Speaker of The House of Commons who gave the school a Highly Commended School Council Award. Billingshurst students are saying to all parents across Sussex, “park legally, carefully, be considerate to pedestrians and neighbours alike, do not throw rubbish out of your cars, do not belt out loud music and just be a little kinder”. Of course, most parents are already aware of these things, but the students are appealing to the better nature of those who are not yet so thoughtful.

Stately Home for Forest Pearls

One of the UK’s rarest butterflies has returned to woodland in West Sussex where it has not been seen for nearly 20 years. The Pearl-bordered Fritillary can now be found in Stansted Forest, which forms part of the Stansted Park Estate on the border between West Sussex and Hampshire. The butterfly is restricted to just a couple of sites within the region and has declined by 95% in the last 40 years. A new Butterfly Conservation scheme, ‘Fritillaries for the Future’, has focused on rebuilding strong and sustainable populations of the Pearlbordered Fritillary across large areas of the county. A number of captive-bred butterflies were released into Stansted Park last spring. The Pearl-bordered Fritillary was once known as the ‘Woodman’s Friend’ due to its habit of following clearings made by coppice workers and foresters and was common and widespread until the middle of the last century. This orange, black and yellow coloured butterfly is named after the string of silver ‘pearls’ that run along its hindwing and it can be seen on the wing between April and May Photo credit:Tim Melling

Autumn Fun in the Woods

Autumn is a spectacular season as our trees transform from lush greens into stunning displays of red, gold and brown. Embrace the crisp air and celebrate with these top ideas from the Woodland Trust. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, our woodlands show signs of the new season. Walk along wooded paths, crunch on fallen leaves and smell fruits ripening in hedgerows. Use the Woodland Trust website to find a wood near you and experience the amazing autumn colour. Autumn is an enchanting time to be out in the woods and get muddy together with your family. Visit the Nature Detectives online for lots of exciting ideas to tempt kids – and grown-ups – from bat spotting to twilight treks. Head off on an autumn scavenger hunt to see how many autumnal signs you can discover while you’re out and about, or try collecting fallen leaves and conkers and make a wonderful woodland collage. Why not celebrate the season at one of the Woodland Trust’s events? Light up at a lantern-making workshop, discover magical mushrooms on a fungal foray, pull on your wellies for a woodland wander or get crafty with crispy leaves. Don’t forget to tell the Woodland Trust what you see. Recording your seasonal sightings with Nature’s Calendar will help scientists observe how the changing climate is affecting the UK’s wildlife. Can you take a note of the first signs of autumn, from ripe berries to leaves changing colour? Head to www.woodlandtrust.org.uk for more great ideas to embrace the autumn season.
