Bringing Back the Performing Arts Fun to Horsham What to Do If You’re not Happy with Your School Offer Primary Times spoke to John Chard, expert on school appeals and here are some of his thoughts. Do I have to accept the school that I have been offered? The simple answer is no but it is recommended that you initially accept the school place offered while you pursue other options. These could include appealing against the decision not to offer a place at your preferred school.You will need to explain to an Independent Appeal Panel the reasons why you want a place at the school, but it will not be sufficient simply to say that you want a place at the school because it is the best school. You will need to put forward a strong case supported by independent evidence, to convince an appeal panel.You will need to convince the panel that there are strong reasons to overturn the decision of the admission authority. When making a decision, the admission authority has to take into consideration only matters limited by their admission policies, whereas the appeal panel is not restricted to that and can look at anything. The panel will balance the needs of your child against the needs of the school and if your case prevails, the panel will allow your appeal. Please note that infant class rules apply for places in Key Stage 1.

Charity’s College Competition Students with additional educational needs from across the South have come together to participate in the South of England Agricultural Society’s twenty third Jim Green Challenge. Due to Covid, the format of the competition changed for 2021 and students were challenged in the run up to the South of England Show to create an item on a theme with an agricultural or horticultural link such as ‘farm to fork’ or ‘endangered species’. All entries were put on display at the iconic three-day agricultural show, for thousands of people to see. Participants in the Society’s event this year were Aldingbourne Trust, Crawley College, Hadlow College, Manor Green College, Plumpton College and Woodlands Meed.

Back in March 2020, the unthinkable happened and the pandemic caused a full lockdown. Key workers, in particular the NHS staff, became real life heroes, especially those who returned to the front line. Early in 2020, a brand new theatre school opened in Horsham and immediately became a hit with local children. But the school’s Principal worked for the NHS and returned to doing this incredibly important job. However, the children who attended Dragons’ Den-backed Razzamataz Horsham, have been missing their performing arts classes. So it is wonderful news that the school is set to reopen in September with a brand new, but extremely experienced Principal. Andrea White has been the Principal of Razzamataz Bognor for more than five years and is set to take on Razzamataz Horsham. Andrea has been involved in the arts all of her life, performing all over the world. She has produced, directed and choreographed more than 75 shows and has spent her life inspiring young people with an interest in the arts. Most Animals Like To… Manager of Squire’s Garden Centre in Washington, Chris Dartnell, has written a captivating children’s book called ‘Most animals like to…’, with beautiful illustrations by Helz Cuppleditch who also works at Squire’s. The book is aimed at children aged 3-5, and is about animals who have fun yet unusual habits which are reflected in their names, so there’s Cheddar the mouse, Howler the dog, Chippy the seagull and Suds the cat, to name but a few. The book costs £4.99 and is available to buy now at Squire’s Garden Centre in Washington. Author Chris Dartnell, who is from East Sussex, is a man of many talents. As well as writing his first book he has a passion for horticulture, and has been Manager of Squire’s Garden Centre in Washington for nine years. He is also an accomplished drummer and has played with many bands, including local favourite The Reform Club with whom he has released two albums. Chris Dartnell told Primary Times, “I was inspired to write this book when I saw my cat drinking from the sink tap one day, and I thought it would be fun to write about the unusual habits that animals have. Massive thanks go to my colleague Helz Cuppleditch who did all the beautiful illustrations in the book which really brings it to life.” 2

Choosing your Child’s Secondary School

Choosing a secondary school may at first appear to be a daunting and complicated decision faced by parents. However it doesn’t need to be. It’s an important decision but, with so many schools to choose from and so many variables and specialisations, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are ways to make the process of finding the best school for your child easier. We have lots of ideas in this supplement as well as a table of local school websites to help you. Slick brochures and grand claims can be misleading and it is the people within a school that will have the most important impact on your child’s future. So, look beyond the website, visit, ask questions, get a sense of the school and what it stands for. Children enjoy facilities and activities but they are shaped by people and by values. The road ahead will have ups and downs and you will want to share them with people who believe in your child, who have high expectations for them and who genuinely care. Children succeed when they feel like they fit, when a school considers them as a person rather than a number or statistic and when they are allowed to reach for their individual potential. From the very first moment you set foot in the right school, you will get the feeling that they really want to get to know you and that they are just as excited about you joining their family as you are about joining them. Lots of schools will want to share their way, their philosophy, their vision, but the right ones will want to share yours. The best education is built around the child and not the other way round. Talking about previous Ofsted reports with a school, especially neutral or negative ones, can provide a good indicator of how the school takes on criticism, actively listens and puts plans in place to strive for better. Think about how the size of the school will suit your child. Smaller schools may be able to provide continuous one-to-one support to a child, while bigger schools could have a better community spirit and group learning as well as more variety and options. Weigh up all the pros and cons and see what you think.

Keep track of all the key diary dates, including specific school open evenings. Going to all open evenings can really help with your application. Ask what extra-curricular activities are offered at the school. Out of school activities are a good indicator of the enjoyment and experiences available to students of the school. Check out if the facilities are well maintained. Most classrooms will look spotless during an open evening, so look beyond the obvious teaching areas. The library, lunch hall and toilets are good indicators of how a school is maintained. Ask your child what they think of the school. Though it may not be wise to give your child final authority of the chosen school as they may give lots of weight to where their friends are going for instance, it is still a great idea to ask for your child’s opinion and find out which school they felt the most comfortable in and why. Finally, don’t panic! Have fun exploring the different schools and what they have to offer. There are many schools that are unique and can give your child an individual experience through their secondary school journey. Remember that you must return your application form to your local education authority by Sunday 31 October 2021. They may not accept late applications.

Winners of The UK’s oldest book awards The winners of this year’s CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals, the UK’s oldest book awards for children and young people, have been announced. The Medals celebrate outstanding achievement in children’s writing and illustration respectively and are unique in being judged by librarians. This year, both winning books explore urban landscapes through a child’s eyes. As over 10 million children head back to school in September, new research, commissioned by youth charity, The Diana Award, has asked young people and their parents about their experiences of bullying and the impact the events of the last year has had on their lives and social development. The survey covers a broad range of topics including how many young people and parents have experienced bullying and the impact this has had on their lives and their concerns about returning to school, cultural movements and news stories in the last year, and how this might have influenced young people. For example, the rise in conversation and news coverage around inclusivity, diversity, racism and sexism; How Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns may have impacted social development in children and young people. A host of celebrities including children’s TV presenters, sports people, actors, models and many others have filmed videos discussing their personal experiences of being bullied at school aimed at supporting today’s pupils. Just One Tree Day

There is still time for schools to join hundreds of others and sign-up to the highly popular Just One Tree Day, taking place on Friday 15 October. Schools throughout the UK and around the globe have already committed to participating in this international non-uniform day that encourages children to bring in £1 to plant a tree and help reforest the planet - a tree is planted for every £1 raised. Over 150,000 children from eight countries have joined together since Just One Tree Day first launched in 2019. The day highlights to children and young people how their individual actions can make a difference in the fight against climate change and the biodiversity crises. The event is open to both primary and secondary schools - those taking part can access lesson resources that fit in with the national curriculum. As part of their fundraising activities, children learn about photosynthesis, the benefits of trees for both people and wildlife and the vital role they play in reducing the impacts of climate change. The money raised is used to plant the ‘right trees in the right place’, supporting reforestation projects in Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal and Zambia, including mangrove forests and kelp regeneration. Primary Times spoke to Matt King, Head at Great Ballard School and he gave us some pointers about choosing a school. “Slick brochures and grand claims can be misleading and it is the people within a school that will have the most important impact on your child’s future. A Small, Supportive Learning Environment

Larger schools and classrooms can mean reduced teacher interaction, elevated noise and increased chance of disruption which can create barriers to pupils’ learning. Slindon College classroom sizes are limited to a maximum of 10 pupils which they believe is hugely beneficial for their boys. Small class sizes lead to more one-on-one attention for the pupil. Mary’s Meals Superheroes

The global school feeding charity has created educational superhero activity packs to teach pupils about life for children in some of the world’s poorest countries. Primary pupils can learn how food is changing the story of the lives of children in these countries. Free downloadable activity packs help pupils learn more about Mary’s Meals’ work feeding children in 19 countries where poverty levels are high, including Malawi, Haiti and Madagascar. Centred on Upile, a girl from Malawi, and her friends, the educational resource shows how the daily cup of vitamin-enriched porridge children receive from Mary’s Meals gives them energy and superhero powers! Resources on offer include a video, fun activities, such as colouring-in sheets and the chance for children to design their own superhero masks. The materials also support learning across the curriculum including language, literacy and health and wellbeing. The educational packs are aimed at primary school children and contain different resources for 5-7 year olds and also 8-11 year olds. Mary’s Meals has also produced an updated resource called Amazing Grace which is aimed at pupils in upper primary school. This explores how poverty can prevent children around the world getting an education, but how a daily meal at school is transforming the lives of children like Grace, enabling them to gain an education and learn and grow. Children’s Poetry Award The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) has announced the 2021 shortlist for the CLiPPA (CLPE Children’s Poetry Award. The shortlist announcement featured live poetry readings from leading children’s poets alongside performances by children from primary schools. The five books on the shortlist are: Slam! You’re Gonna Wanna Hear This, chosen by Nikita Gill. Nikita Gill brings together exciting new poets, all well known to poetry audiences but many making their first appearance in print.
