‘Recycle with Michael’ Challenge
Sussex schools are being encouraged to ‘Recycle with Michael’, as part of an initiative by The Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill. Local schools that sign up to the scheme will be challenged to fill as many bags as possible before the end of March 2019 for the chance to be crowned Michael’s recycling champions. The winning school, calculated as the one with the highest ratio of bags to pupils, will receive a trophy, certificate and a very special visit from Michael, the scheme’s mascot. Designed especially for primary schoolaged children, the programme is also an important way for schools to generate much-needed funds - a percentage of the bags’ financial value is donated back to the school to spend how they wish. The remaining funds raised will go towards supporting The Salvation Army’s important work to help vulnerable people from all walks of life in communities across the UK. The programme is supported by free downloadable school materials such as presentations, posters and lesson plans which teach environmental and charitable messages. For more information, to register and request bags, please visit www. recyclewithmichael.co.uk.

Brighton & Hove Albion take on Birmingham City at The People’s Pension Stadium, Crawley this month in the FA Women’s Super League. Led by former England women’s manager Hope Powell, the Seagulls are almost at the end of their first season in the top-flight, having taken on the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. The match is being played on Wednesday 20 February and kicks off at 7.45pm. Speaking about the importance of having support from the sidelines, Powell said, “I think a message to the fans from me would be to come and support the girls. They put a lot of effort in and relish the support. It lifts everybody. They want to play and showcase themselves as much as possible, and in order to do that we’d really like people to come out and support. So if you can get there, please come along.” At each match, there are plenty of activities for all of the family to enjoy including free face painting and a photo booth. After the match, you can also stick around as the players come to the side of the pitch to pose for photographs and sign autographs. You can purchase your match tickets now from www. Mrs Bun the Baker’s Ratatouille Bake FROM KITCHEN ZERO
TO BAKING HERO!
Here is a yummy and healthy recipe for Ratatouille from Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker. It’s a twist on the classic recipe – taking out the aubergines – but it’s still just as nice.
The easy-to-follow, child-friendly cookbook is packed with favourites and tried and tested, approved and munched recipes from the Young Buns who attend the award-winning cookery school. This book gives children an insight into how exciting baking can be and will inspire confidence in adults who have never baked before.
Ingredients
1 pepper - any colour 1-2 celery sticks Half a small courgette 3-4 mushrooms 1-2 spring onions 1-2 tablespoons of oil 6-8 small cooked potatoes 1 tablespoon crème fraîche Handful of grated cheese 200g tinned chopped tomatoes Basil leaves
Method 1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 6 or 200°C (fan 180°C). Grease a
15 x 15 cm ovenproof dish or a 2 lb loaf tin.You will need a baking tray for roasting.
Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex
2. Chop the pepper in half and take out the seeds. Now chop
the pepper into chunks. Cut the celery into 1cm chunks. Slice the courgette into circles of 1cm thickness then dice. Using your fingers tear the mushrooms into 4-6 pieces – not too small! Cut the spring onion up into small pieces. 3. Place all these ingredients on a baking tray. Splash the oil over them. Roast in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes. 4. Whilst the vegetables are roasting, chop the potatoes into slices - they need to be ½ cm thick. Place the potatoes into a bowl and mix gently with the crème fraîche and grated cheese. 5. When the vegetables come out from the oven ask an adult to place them into your ovenproof dish or loaf tin. Pour in the tomatoes and tear in the basil leaves. Mix it all together. 6. Place the mixed potato mixture over the top, trying to cover all the ratatouille below. If you have extra cheese or some breadcrumbs scatter them over the top for added crunch. 7. Place in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Leave to cool and serve with a green salad. If you don’t like tomatoes leave them out – it’s still as good.
Baking with Mrs Bun the Baker is available for £12.99 online and from all good book stores. For more information, please visit www.mrsbunthebaker.net.

Whatever the Weather!
Whatever the Weather! Fun Days Out with the Family New Archaeology Gallery in Brighton Museum A brand new Archaeology gallery has recently opened in Brighton Museum. At the heart of this brand new family-friendly gallery are seven forensically accurate 3D facial reconstructions revealing the faces of the area’s ancestors and the people who would have been present in and around Brighton and Hove from the Ice Age to the Saxon era.
Using modern scientific technology, research into the lives of people buried in Brighton and Hove has discovered a wealth of mystery, drama and tragedy through stories of toothache, malnutrition, childbirth and possibly murder. Visitors will be able to see exactly what these people looked like and explore the local environment through digital reconstructions. Go and marvel at mysterious objects that were found in Brighton and Hove including the world famous Bronze Age Amber Cup and discover the story of the beautiful Woodingdean Stag.
Admission to the museum is free to Brighton and Hove Residents. For more information, please visit www.brightonmuseums.org.uk.

Make a Splash at the 2019 Sussex Puddle Jumping Championships at WWT Arundel this February Half Term. From February 16-24, children of all ages are being encouraged to grab their wellies, get outside and jump into a puddle. Children will compete against each other to see who can produce the biggest splash from their puddle jump – as measured by special splash-o-meters. They will also be judged on their enthusiasm and jumping style. Daily winners will be announced throughout the half term and lucky ‘supersplashers’ will receive fantastic rainbow umbrella prizes. The overall Sussex Champion wins a pair of BOGS wellies. As well as the main puddle jumping competition arena, there will be practice puddles to help entrants perfect their splashing techniques. Visit the Wildlife garden for Mud n’ Water Lab activities too. Hannah Clifford from WWT told Primary Times, “We know that children love nothing more than to splash about in puddles, so we thought we’d give them the chance to channel their inner splasher through our nation-wide puddle jumping competition at our Wetland Centres. We’ve really perfected the championships this year, with brilliant competition areas, practice puddle zones, lots of additional activities and great prizes.” To join in the fun, visit wwt.org.uk/puddles or follow #puddlejumping.

The Winter Garden is Wakehurst’s new horticultural spectacle, full of sensory delight and the perfect place to lift the spirits on a cold winter’s day. Designed by Wakehurst Garden Supervisor Francis Annette, after training at Andrew Wilson’s London College of Garden Design, it weaves 33,000 plants into a bold contemporary composition. Mature Himalayan silver birch trees (Betula utilis var jacquemontianii), are the centre of attention. Planting them was a careful logistical operation, securing the 10ft high trees firmly into the ground with specially designed anchors. The dramatic pure white trunks rise resplendent to the sky and are interspersed with the coppery gleam of the Tibetan Cherry (Prunus serrula tibetica). Within this canopy, the rich fragrance of Daphne and Witch Hazel, placed close to path edges, reward visitors with their perfume. Texture and colour come from massed blocks of Cornus (including the cultivars ‘Midwinter Fire’ and ‘Bud’s Yellow’), succulent bronze Bergenia, soft, feather-like Calamagrostis and Hellebores. Swathes of Cyclamen, grasses, snowdrops, Crocus and box hedging draw the eye through the garden. Complete immersion in winter beauty drove the design; a place to lose yourself amongst the shimmering bark, soft foliage and rich scents. You can rest on the contemporary carved seat and feel cocooned as you look up at the winter sky. The all-weather path twists and turns throughout the garden, adding to the feeling of discovery – you don’t quite know what you will see around the next corner!
Whatever the Weather!
Half Term at Arundel Wetland Centre
Wakehurst has always been a trailblazer for winter gardens – with one of the first in the UK being created in 1986. Initially focusing on specimen-based planting, the first Winter Garden had lost its energy and in 2017 Wakehurst decided the time was right for a transformation. South Downs Dark Skies Festival
Look out for more than two weeks of cosmic fun with star parties, talks and family activities taking place across the South Downs National Park celebrating our wonderful dark night skies. The South Downs Dark Skies Festival will take place between Friday 15 February and Sunday 3 March. The free Stargazing South Downs – 2019 Roadshow will be going on tour during February Half Term week to venues in West Sussex, East Sussex and Hampshire. No matter what the weather is outside, you can still go along and learn about the amazing dark skies in our National Park. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landings this year’s events will include indoor planetarium shows, a giant ‘dark night skies’ colouring wall, a chance to dress up as an astronaut against the backdrop of the moon, talks about the moon, the stars and nocturnal wildlife, science demonstrations, and, if the night is clear, the opportunity to go outside and take part in some moongazing with the experts.
Half term week, 18-22 February sees the return of the very popular Create & Grow workshops at Squire’s Garden Centres with two of the most popular woodland creatures - the Owl and the Fox - taking centre stage as the types of money box to paint and start saving. There’s no need to book in advance, just turn up on the day and, subject to availability, you can get painting straight away, anytime between 10am and 4pm. The cost is £4.75 per child. For more information, visit www. squiresgardencentres.co.uk.
Forest Craft: A Child’s Guide to Whittling in the Woodland Make family days in the woodland even more memorable with outdoor whittling projects. There’s an increasing focus on how much children can gain from regular, quiet, meditative practice, and an absorbing pastime like whittling in a peaceful woodland setting offers exactly that. With an emphasis on safety and adult supervision, Forest Craft presents a range of simple and fun projects that children can make and enjoy hours of play with afterwards.
Visit the Roadshow on Saturday 16 February at Midhurst Rother College, Midhurst or on Wednesday 20 February at the Town Hall, Lewes, 4–8pm. These events are free to attend with no booking required.Visit www.southdowns.gov.uk for more details about these and other events in the festival.
Author Richard Irvine provides a thorough guide to the basic tools and equipment that are required and the techniques that will be used in the projects. Following this are 20 projects, with simple step-by-step instructions accompanied by photographs and useful tips.
Leonardslee Gardens
Dotted throughout are interesting nuggets of information about woodland folklore. There are also plenty of inspirational photographs showing how much fun it is to get out into the woodland with friends
The historic 200 acre lakes and gardens estate at Leonardslee, Lower Beeding near Horsham in West Sussex, have announced that the site will be open to the public from March. The estate was closed to public access in 2010 - up until this time the landscaped woodland gardens attracted some 50,000 visitors a year. The site was first planted in 1801 and is noted for the outstanding displays of its rock garden as well as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and spring flowers. There is also a new restaurant and tearoom. Visitors will also be able to see the unique doll’s house exhibition, depicting the Edwardian estate and neighbouring villages at 1/12th scale, and also a rare colony of wallabies that have grazed in the gardens for over a century. For more information, visit www.leonardsleegardens.co.uk.
Paint your own Money Box at Squire’s
Whether your child’s approach to saving money follows the habits of the wise old owl or if they are as quick as a fox when it comes to spending, saving money is a good habit to encourage from a young age. Painting their own money-box is a great way to get them even more engaged with the idea.

Chichester Cathedral
Chichester Cathedral has one of the finest choirs in Britain, with an international reputation for the quality of its performances, and the wonderful musical education offered to the choristers. As well as singing in regular services in the cathedral, the choirboys broadcast to hundreds of thousands of radio listeners, make recordings, and travel abroad for concert tours. This is in addition to a normal school curriculum that includes academic work, sport, drama and field trips. The chorister life is about much more than music. The boys are constantly encouraged and developed within a caring and close-knit community, setting goals and exceptional standards for themselves. They learn important skills for life: concentration, teamwork, organisation, and a sense of professionalism. These qualities are highly valued by employers, universities and secondary schools (nearly all the choristers gain scholarships when they leave the choir). The chorister experience really is an unrivalled gateway to a future of opportunity and success. If your son has shown an interest in music, enjoys singing, or is just interested in finding out more, why not explore this exceptional opportunity? Chichester choristers typically come from primary schools in the South, and aren’t expected to have any previous experience of music – the Cathedral provides all the training. Informal, friendly auditions and meetings are held all year round. For more information, please visit www.chichestercathedral.org.uk. Photo credit: Ash Mills
and why good design is important. The aim of the programme is to inspire a generation and fill them with the confidence, knowledge and skills to make their voices heard. The launch of a comprehensive nationwide programme follows a successful pilot phase that engaged a diverse range of 18,000 young people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, in over 200 schools across England. The pilot was delivered by 349 Architecture Ambassadors from 170 architecture practices. The RIBA’s National Schools Programme offers a bespoke variety of workshops, matched to the individual needs, resources and interests of the school. Projects can involve exploring the local area and understanding key issues affecting the local community. Projects in the pilot phase have also included huge large-scale models made of bamboo and proposals for creating ‘a city of the future’. For more information, please visit www.architecture.com.

Calling All Gifted Children
Three fully funded places covering 100% of the cost of a child’s education from the age of 8 - 18 are available to children currently attending state primary school. Successful applicants join Cumnor House in Sussex at the age of 8 until 13, when they move on to one of Cumnor’s thirteen independent senior school partners, where they remain until they are 18. The bursaries are meanstested and are awarded to children who excel academically or show particular potential in art, DT, drama, music or sport. Children must be about to start Year 4 or Year 7 in September. Applications are open now until 30 April. The selection process involves completing a means-tested Bursary Form and Registration Form. A full report is requested from the child’s current school before they are invited to attend an ‘experience day’ at Cumnor, during which they will work and play alongside their contemporaries and are given the opportunity to show their particular talent in art, DT, drama, music or sport, if appropriate. An Affordable Independent School “We can’t possibly afford it – we’re not that sort of family.” If only Burgess Hill Girls had a pound for every time they’ve heard this. When you do the sums you might be surprised to discover that a private education could be an option for your child.
At Burgess Hill Girls, their mission is to create tomorrow’s women by providing an outstanding, personalised education which inspires every girl to excel. But can you afford what they have to offer? While at first glance, the fees may look daunting, consider the potential savings you can make in terms of childcare, meals and after-school clubs. The school has calculated that an independent education for a four-year-old starting reception can in fact cost as little as £81 per week. Even better, as they offer the Government’s Free Childcare Scheme, you could be eligible for an additional £44 saving per week, resulting in a final cost of only £37 per week or £1,924 per year. Here is a brief summary of the calculations: Extended School Day At Burgess Hill Girls your child will get up to 20 hours more education a week than they would in a state school. Time you won’t have to cover with childcare, a saving of approximately £100 a week. After-School Clubs As part of their school day and included in the fees are a wide range of after-school clubs. Two clubs a week could save £350 per year on childcare. School Meals Breakfast, lunch and tea are also all included in the fees at Burgess Hill Girls, a potential saving of £437 a year. 15 hours Early Years Entitlement On top of all this, Burgess Hill Girls extends the 15 hours weekly Early Years Free Entitlement to their Reception year. Parents can save £760 a term, until your child turns five. The maximum saving is £2288 per year, £44 per week. So before you assume that an independent school education is beyond your reach, take a closer look - Burgess Hill Girls is more affordable than you might think. For more information and to see a full break down of the savings, please visit www. burgesshillgirls.com.

Christ’s Hospital
Christ’s Hospital is an independent co-educational boarding and day school of 900 pupils with an equal mix of boys and girls aged 11-18. The school is located in West Sussex. It is situated in stunning countryside between London and Brighton. Christ’s Hospital is unique for a UK independent boarding school in that it offers more bursary places than other schools. This stems from their founding charter as a charitable school. School fees are paid on a means tested basis, with substantial subsidies paid by the school, so that pupils from all corners of society are able to have a high quality, independent boarding school education that would otherwise be beyond their means. Kate, a former parent whose child attended Christ’s Hospital, told Primary Times, “Whilst other school fee assistance schemes have come and gone, Christ’s Hospital has stuck to its charitable aims since it was founded in 1552, educating the financially, socially and otherwise needy for free, or at a reduced rate, in a caring boarding environment. Today these pupils sit happily alongside the full fee payers and the school’s pupil profile is one of which its royal founder, Edward VI, would have been proud.” If you are intrigued and would like to visit Christ’s Hospital, they encourage families to go to one of their termly Open Mornings or to call them to book a tour of the school. For more information, please visit www.christs-hospital.org.uk.
Marvel Inspire Next Generation of Engineers
The Government’s Year of Engineering campaign has teamed up with superhero comic brand Marvel to launch a set of fun educational resources. These are designed to help KS2 students aged 7-11 identify the superhero qualities needed to solve the global challenges we face. The campaign features a wealth of inspiration for keeping kids busy and entertained. The resources include an aptitude test that helps young people identify which superhero they share the most aptitudes with, and how these would suit a career in engineering. There are also real life superhero case studies featuring the aspirational stories of engineers, as well as a curriculum linked lesson. The free lesson plans will help teachers run the superhero session including a fun classroom activity with role play challenges. The free Marvel resources aim to challenge engineering stereotypes, encourage a re-evaluation of gender roles in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths careers and showcase to young people that they have what it takes to be real world superhero engineers. It will also encourage skills such as resilience, resourcefulness, collaboration and curiosity. The exciting new More Heroes Needed Marvel resources, which feature iconic favourites such as The Hulk, Black Panther, The Wasp and Iron Man, can be found in the schools hub of the Year of Engineering website at www.yearofengineering.gov.uk.

Out of School Activities
Out of School Activities relational skills can suffer. In contrast: developing musical skill requires an ability to understand and connect to others, developing social skills. Singing in a choir and playing in an orchestra or band involves collaborating towards achieving a shared goal in performance. Your child can develop a new circle of friends who have a common interest.
Razzamataz Bognor Regis
Busy parents trying to do the best for their children are faced with lots of different hurdles. For a family with more than one child, it is not always possible to offer all children the same experiences. That is why Razzamataz Bognor Regis offers a huge 50% sibling discount. Andrea White, Principal of the school, told Primary Times, “As well as the sibling discount, we are proud to offer a free first session to all children. We understand that most children need to try out an activity to know whether they like it or not and our teachers are very good at making all new students feel very welcome and will carefully nurture them to make sure they enjoy themselves and help them to make new friends.”

World Book Day 2019: Save the Date World Book Day, this year on 7 March, is the world’s biggest annual celebration of children’s books, dedicated to celebrating the benefits of reading for pleasure for everyone, everywhere. It is sponsored by National Book Tokens and supported generously each year by the publishing industry, book trade, authors and illustrators. Every year, with a host of publishers, World Book Day curates a list of bespoke £1 books for children and young people across the UK and Ireland, which they can choose for free at their local bookshop or supermarket using their £1 World Book Day book token. Catering for all age groups, from toddler to teen, the list has been created to appeal to the widest possible range of children and young people, tastes and abilities. The list brings together exclusive new stories by much loved authors Malorie Blackman, Patrice Lawrence, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Lauren Child. Designed to be as accessible as possible, the list is available in braille, large print and audio formats and there are two additional books in Welsh: Na Nel! by Meleri Wyn James and Cyw by Anni LlynY Lolfa. Share a Story is the theme at the heart of a 3-year World Book Day campaign, encouraging parents and carers to go beyond dressing up to read and share stories with their children for ten minutes every day. Sharing stories together – anywhere, anytime – for just ten minutes a day has long-lasting effects on a child’s future. World Book Day aims to inspire new reading habits for adults and children, underlining just how important this shared time is. World Book Day 2019 will launch a rebranded events programme – ‘Share a Story Live’ – to bring major activities into National Literacy Trust hubs nationwide. Central to generating major regional excitement and bringing books to life for children, the tour is the ‘living embodiment’ of World Book Day. The day also sees children bringing books to life through an array of organised events and activities in schools, bookshops, libraries and at home. Parents, get reddy! Friday 15 March is Red Nose Day! Comic Relief’s Ella Large offers ten top tips to help your children bake, dance, splat and sing their way to a fantastic fundraising day. Red Nose Day is all about people of all ages coming together to make the world a better place. Last Red Nose Day, schools and nurseries helped raise over £5 million to help vulnerable people in the UK and the world’s poorest communities. And this year Comic Relief wants to do even better! At Comic Relief, they recognise all the hard work that lies behind children’s fundraising. Whether it’s baking, making donations, creating costumes or face painting at 7 o’clock in the morning, it’s hard to overestimate parents’ efforts. So why do it? What difference does it make? First of all, all the money your child’s school raises this Red Nose Day will be used by Comic Relief to change countless lives, both here in the UK and worldwide. The charity funds amazing organisations that provide brilliant solutions for people living in desperate situations. Secondly, taking part in Red Nose Day can have a profound impact on children. It’s an exciting, memorable day when everyone lets their hair down and comes together to make a difference. As well as being great fun, for many children it’s the first time they understand they have the power to change things in the world. So as a parent, what can you do to make sure your child has a Red Nose Day to remember? 1. Get the date on the calendar. Red Nose Day is Friday 15 March… Don’t be caught by surprise! 2. Get costumes ready. Schools across the UK will be asking pupils to pay £1 to wear something red or go non-uniform. Avoid the lastminute panic and get those red costumes reddy! 3. Buy a tee-hee-hee-shirt. For a simple dressing-up solution, why not by a Red Nose Day t-shirt? Children’s designs feature Disney characters and are available from TK Maxx stores (www. tkmaxx.com ) or www. comicrelief.com/shop 4. Go wild with accessories. Face paint, red hair dye, red socks, scarves, ribbons, jewellery… Dig out what you’ve got and decorate your child! For instant solutions,
you’ll find everything from wristbands and badges to deeley boppers and spinning wands at www.comicrelief.com/shop and in Sainsbury’s stores 5. Pick your child’s Nose. This year there are eleven new Red Noses, each of which comes in its own box your child can use as the building blocks of a castle. 6. Get baking. Red Nose Day bake sale? Never fear! There are a range of savoury and sweet recipes at www.comicrelief.com/free-downloads – all easy to make and with a Red Nose twist. Or just buy a cake and take the credit (nobody will know…). 7. Support with sponsorship. If your child comes home with a sponsorship form, help them to contact family and friends to ask for support. 8. Visit the Red Nose Day website. Spend time looking at www.comicrelief.com/primarytimes with your child. You’ll find everything from stories about the people their fundraising will help to colouring sheets and dressing-up masks. 9. Watch Blue Peter together. In the run-up to Red Nose Day, Blue Peter will be asking kids to share their favourite rib-ticklers and side-splitters for their ‘Make your teacher laugh for Comic Relief’ campaign. 10. Help out on the big day. Find out what your child’s school is planning for Red Nose Day and offer your support. Could you run a disco? Sell cakes? Or just shake a bucket at the school gate? At the end of the day, sit down with your child and watch a massive night of comedy and entertainment live on the BBC, knowing that together you’ve played your part in changing people’s lives for the better. Schools and organisers can order their free primary school fundraising packs stuffed with everything you need to get inspired and involved at www.comicrelief.com/ primarytimespack
