Tapestry Designed by Children
Wickers Gymnastics Club At Wickers Gymnastics Club play and fun are an essential part of all the children’s gymnastics experience. At Wickers the children’s experience of gymnastics brings many rewards. Children learn how their bodies move, how to socialise with other children and enjoy the thrill of achieving new skills. There’s nothing children of all ages like better than tumbling around on soft mats, bouncing on the trampoline, swinging on the bars, balancing on the beam and jumping in the pit. Wickers offer all of this in a very safe environment. At Wickers children build strength, develop coordination, make new friends and develop valuable listening skills and the ability to follow verbal instruction, all whilst having great fun. Wickers has been running for 30 years and has a dedicated gymnastics facility in the Adur District. All coaches are British Gymnastics qualified, hold CRB checks, child protection certificates and have basic first aid training. Wickers offer an extensive programme of preschool gymnastics, junior gymnastics, competitive gymnastics and adult gymnastics. Classes take place throughout the week and at the weekend. Gymnasts also follow the British Gymnastics badge scheme. Wickers can also host your child’s birthday party! For more information visit the website, www. wickersgymnastics.co.uk or call on 01903 752 503.

West Dean Tapestry Studio is working on a tapestry conceived and commissioned by the Charterhouse, the almshouse and heritage site in London with a strong emphasis on learning. Uniquely, but fittingly, the Charterhouse has involved a team of children from local primary school, St John the Evangelist, to create the design, working with the internationally acclaimed UK tapestry studio’s expert weavers. To create the design, Philip Sanderson, Tapestry Subject Tutor and Studio Leader at West Dean Tapestry Studio, and Trainee Weaver Ellie Rudd, visited the Charterhouse and ran two workshops with Year 5 pupils. Responding to the Charterhouse’s own tapestries, Sanderson and Rudd taught the class about the methods of tapestry weaving and the history of the Charterhouse almshouse. From this, the children each created their own nautical designs inspired by one of the first Charterhouse residents, George Fenner, who served as a sea captain under Elizabethan mariner Sir Francis Drake. Sanderson and Rudd then used these designs to create a plan for the tapestry. The composition features galleons, sea monsters and shipwrecks. Each child will have a piece of their work represented in the final tapestry. For more information about the Charterhouse, please visit www.thecharterhouse.org.

Aladdin at Worthing Theatres
Pantomime Cast Dazzle Theatre Customers
Customers buying tickets at The Hawth on 24 September could have been forgiven for thinking they’d travelled into the future, as a number of them were greeted by the sight of the Crawley Theatre’s pantomime cast in full costume and make up, and a very large, very sparkly magic lamp. Worthing Theatres and Paul Holman Associates have announced an exciting star cast for their annual family pantomime, Aladdin, playing at the Pavilion Theatre from Friday 30 November to Tuesday 1 January. Following on from the record-breaking success of their 2017 pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, starring ‘the one and only’ Chesney Hawkes, they have confirmed that this year’s festive offering, Aladdin, will be headlined by Lee Latchford-Evans of STEPS in the title role. Lee is joined by CBeebies favourite, TV presenter Rebecca Keatley, as Aladdin’s love interest, the feisty Princess Jasmine along with award-winning comedian Vikki Stone who brings her unique comedy style to play the male role of the evil Abanazar. Completing the line-up is comic Mark Jones as Wishee Washee and Brighton cabaret star Dave Lynn as Widow Twankey. The magical Genie of the Lamp will be a spectacular 12-foot puppet voiced, in prerecorded footage, by one of the most recognisable voices in the UK, legendary actor and national treasure, Brian Blessed. Sail to Santa
Feel the magic up close. You’ll have a ringside view of Frosty and the jaw-dropping acts, which include aerial acrobatics, knife throwing, solo trapeze, sword and dagger balancing, plate spinning, a laser light show and the wheel of death (acts vary by centre). It’s fantastic entertainment for all the family. The circus will be held in a Big Top in the grounds of Squire’s Garden Centre.
The popular Sail to Santa event is back this December at Arundel Wetland Centre. Families can board an elf-powered boat for a gentle ride through the reed beds to visit Father Christmas on 1-2 December and 8-9 December. Each child’s ticket takes a child and their guardian on a unique trip where children can experience the magic of a festive visit with Father Christmas inside his ‘frosty’ grotto and receive a quality WWT Christmas gift. Christmas crafts with the elves, posting a letter to Father Christmas and trying the ‘Naughty or Nice O-meter’ before boarding all add to the excitement to the experience.
After the show each child will be able to meet Santa and receive an early Christmas present from him. Go and meet Santa in his magical grotto, and as well as seeing your child’s face light up when they see Santa and receive a beautiful wrapped gift, you’ll also get a warm glow, as you’ll be benefitting a local charity.
Advance tickets are on sale for boat departure time slots, so booking is essential. Tickets are £8 per child and are for sale online only. This price does not include admission to WWT Arundel Wetland Centre but children under 4 are admitted free. Admission tickets for the Centre can be purchased online at a saving of 10%.
The Greatest Snowman is running from now until 24 December. Tickets cost £13 until 19 December then go up to £14. Under 2s go free. There’s also a Traditional Circus at Squire’s from 27 December - 1 January, and tickets are just £10 per person. For more information, please visit www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk.
WWT Arundel Wetland Centre is open from 9.30am – 4.30pm throughout the holidays, except for Christmas Day when the centre is closed. On Christmas Eve the centre closes early at 2pm. WWT Arundel is open on Boxing Day and on New Year’s Day.
Go along and see a spectacular circus show and meet Santa this Christmas at Squire’s Garden Centre, Washington. The circus stars Frosty the Snowman, who has always been a big fan of the circus, but unfortunately has no circus skills. Watch Frosty as he causes mayhem in his quest to become The Greatest Snowman.

Out of Bounds
Out of Bounds is an entertainment centre based in the heart of West Sussex. Boasting a range of fun activities such as soft play, clip ’n climb, bowling, adventure golf, laser tag and footgolf, they cater for all ages. Designed by House of Play, the structure is intended for under 12s to develop physical skills and promote mental stimulation. The multi-level soft play will have your kids bouncing off the walls, quite literally, in a fun and safe environment. The clip ’n climb arena has a number of climbing elements suitable for a range of climbers. Do you dare to test your nerve on the leap of faith? Alternatively try one of Out of Bounds’ 12 premium Brunswick Bowling lanes, which are the perfect competition for the entire family. The fun doesn’t stop inside though. Outside you can play footgolf. The aim of the game is simple - the person who gets the football in the oversized holes in the least amount of shots, wins. Or if you’re looking for something more traditional, try the 18 hole adventure golf course. Join the safari trail and majestic animals, travel amidst waterfalls, palm trees and native animals, and experience the tranquil river before your eyes. Keep your eyes and ears open for some big surprises. There is so much to do at Out of Bounds. For more information, please visit www.out-of-bounds.co.uk.

Christmas Ice Rink at Goffs Park
Christmas has arrived at Goffs Park, Crawley. The 28m x 16m Ice Rink is open every day until Sunday 20 January except Christmas Day. It’s significantly bigger than the rink in Queens Square last Christmas, and will include an Alpine-themed café, seating, large changing area and more viewing positions. The rink is suitable for anyone over the age of four and any level of ability. Pandas will be available for hire for young skaters. It’s fully covered and offers a fun-filled experience for the whole family whatever the weather. All skating sessions last for one hour. The first session begins at 10am at weekends and every day between 15 December and 6 January. At all other times the first session begins at 12.30pm. The last session begins at 8pm every day except for New Year’s Eve, when the last session will be at 5.30pm. Peak sessions cost £9.75 for adults and £8 for children aged 16 and under. A family ticket for four (maximum of two adults) costs £32.50. Off-peak sessions cost £7 whatever your age. To book your session on the rink, visit www.crawleyicerink.co.uk. For all events taking place in Crawley this festive season, please visit www.crawley.gov.uk.
Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks
Plus, its festive-themed challenges will get children into the Christmas spirit. Look for something red like a jolly robin’s breast, something soft and fluffy like Santa’s beard, or for some festive mistletoe. Get your children outdoors this winter, they may even spot some reindeer hoof marks or a footprint left by Santa. For more information about the Woodland Trust and to print off the activity sheet, visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk and search for Scavenger Hunts.
Festive Sparkle with the National Trust
Christmas isn’t complicated for kids. It’s the one time of year they don’t want to do something new and different. Father Christmas and presents on the big day, obviously, but with that in the bag, it’s all about family and friends, holly and carols, trees and twinkly lights, cloudy breath and warming treats. Head over to your local National Trust places in December for a fix of festive magic. In a special Christmas exhibition Nymans is showing over 40 illustrations from the magical adventures of The Snowman™ and The Snowdog. Follow the garden trail complete with giant snow dogs and try drop-in crafts.
The cold crisp days of winter are a magical time to go walking with transformed scenery and spectacular early sunsets. Getting out into the great outdoors for a while is a wonderful way to escape the demands of the festive season for a few hours too. Luckily, the Ramblers’ annual Festival of Winter Walks is back, from 21 December to 6 January with hundreds of free walks to help with some winter walking inspiration. The Festival of Winter Walks is now in its thirtyfirst year - so the Ramblers know a thing or two about the joys of getting out and about in the colder weather. From short, festive-themed strolls topped off with a sociable drink to more strenuous stretches to help boost your energy levels, there’s a walk to suit everyone. Many are suitable for families with children. All group walks during the Festival of Winter Walks are free to attend, but if you’re inspired to keep walking, why not join the Ramblers? Your membership will give you access to hundreds of group walks every year, an online library of over 2,500 Ramblers Routes, as well as many other benefits. For more information, visit www.ramblers.org.uk/winterwalks
Woodland Trust Scavenger Hunt
The Woodland Trust have come up with a creative way for your young adventure seekers to get outside this winter and enjoy themselves. A scavenger hunt will inspire the nature hunter in every child, introducing kids to new and exciting aspects of the world around them, some of which only come out in winter. 18
