Coping at Christmas By Edmond Chan, NSPCC Childline Supervisor

Christmas can be such a magical time of year and something that lots of us really look forward to. But sometimes if your Christmas doesn’t sound the same as other people’s it can leave you feeling down. Or perhaps there are some difficulties at home that will make it a stressful time for you, instead of a time to celebrate. At Childline we hear from lots of children who struggle to enjoy Christmas. Some feel lonely, some have arguments with family, while others miss people they want to share it with but can’t. Some don’t celebrate Christmas because it’s not part of their beliefs and feel left out. If you’re not looking forward to Christmas, for whatever reason, don’t worry. We’ve got some advice that will help you. Take a break If there have been arguments at home or family members are annoying you a bit, take a break. Plan some time to listen to some music or chat to friends – this will help lift your mood and you can talk about what’s bothering you. Don’t compare Every Christmas is different so try not to compare yours to someone else’s. People only put on social media what they want people to see so don’t worry if your Christmas doesn’t look the same. Talk about how you feel However you’re feeling it’s important you don’t keep it all to yourself. Talk about how you feel with someone you trust – that could be a parent, carer or relative. If you don’t have anyone to talk to you can always talk to Childline. It’s OK not to celebrate It might seem like everyone celebrates Christmas when every advert on TV is about Christmas and the shops are full of decorations and gifts. But not everyone does. If you feel left out because you’re not celebrating, you could talk to your mum, dad or carers. Or get support from our counsellors or share your feelings with other young people on our message boards. How to feel better The Childline website has lots of tools to help you feel better. The Calm Zone has activities, games and exercises to help you feel calm. You can log in to the website and create your own Mood Journal – this helps you let your feelings out. Or why not share your thoughts and feeling on the Childline message boards? Everything you need can be found at www.childline.org: Calm Zone: www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/calm-zone Mood Journal: www.childline.org.uk/toolbox/mood-journal Message boards: www.childline.org.uk/get-support/messageboards If you’d rather speak to someone that’s ok – we are here any time of day or night. You can call Childline free on 0800 1111. Or you can chat online to us at www.childline.org.uk/get-support/12-1-counsellor-chat. Photo credit:Tom Hull

Learn to Swim Properly with Angela’s Swim School Make room for swimming in your life. It’s the essential water safety life skill that’s highly inclusive and gives a total body workout, building muscle tone and improving breathing and circulation. Angela’s Swim School offers lessons to children from 4 months old, plus adult classes for all abilities. Learning to swim from a young age really helps children build in confidence, strength and stamina. To help children learn to swim the right way, Angela’s Swim School has developed the Swimstylers, who are at the heart of the school’s teaching programme. These inspirational characters break down how to become a strong, independent swimmer into clearly defined targets, which step-by- step show children how to progress their swimming with confidence and strong technique. The six Swimstylers characters feature on class names and awards so charting progress is really easy - that’s from non-swimmers up to a 1500m swim. The swim school’s founder swam competitively at the highest levels. Angela’s insight and winning techniques have been the basis of her swim teaching career for over 25 years and made Angela’s Swim School a major provider of lessons in the Southeast, with pools nearby in Littlehampton. Give them the gift of swimming today. Join Angela’s Swim School. Visit www.angelasswimschool.co.uk for more information.

Experience a magical Christmas with the National Trust at Nymans and Standen House and Garden. At Nymans, the house is richly decorated with sumptuous Christmas trees and sparkling lights, including some of the Messel family’s original Christmas decorations. In the garden, join Percy the Park Keeper on a winter wander trail, not forgetting to stop off at the Play Glade to see Percy’s shed and enjoy some festive games. There will also be opportunities to meet Percy in person and help him with his winter jobs. Dogs can also join in with the festive fun during November, December and January. Standen is a wonderfully atmospheric house that lends itself beautifully to Christmas. Visit the Christmas tree in the Courtyard which is inspired by William Morris’ designs. Enjoy twilight openings when you can see the rooms lit for a Christmas celebration and afterwards listen to a local choir singing in the courtyard. Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a visit to see Santa and this year families can visit Santa’s woodland grotto and enjoy a magical Christmas story in the company of the man himself, complete with a small gift for the children and a hot chocolate. Continue your Christmas adventure outside in the garden and join the Pyjama Thief trail. The cheeky Standen dog has stolen everyone’s pyjamas and hidden them in the garden, help the Beale family find them in time for Christmas Day. For those looking for Christmas shopping inspiration, The Sussex Guild will be selling handcrafted items daily throughout December. Photo credit: National Trust Images/Rob Stothard
