Borde Hill Garden Sculpture Exhibition

Towering kinetic wind art and mythological figures will transform the historic Sussex Garden at Borde Hill into a stunning outdoor gallery, as they celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their Sculpture Exhibition. Opening on 10 May, the carefully selected sculptures will be strategically placed throughout the 17-acre formal garden, working in harmony with the renowned horticultural collection that has put Borde Hill on the map. Including over 80 figurative and abstract works in a diverse range of materials from bronze to glass, the display will highlight fresh new talent with some familiar names returning to be part of this special celebration of art. Our photo is of ‘Serenity’ by Brendon Murless. Exploring the Garden’s hidden spaces, visitors will stumble across exquisite stone carvings alongside works in resin, glass and ceramic. Smaller pieces will be exhibited inside the Glasshouse and Green Tree Gallery, encouraging visitors to explore every nook and cranny of the historic garden and grounds. All works will be on sale, with something to suit every taste and pocket. The exhibition will run daily from 10 May – 30 September with admission included in the standard entry price. For more information, please visit www.bordehill.co.uk.

Last Chance for Sussex Butterfly

Hundreds of Sussex school children and college students have joined forces with wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation to save a rare butterfly from local extinction.Volunteers aged from 6 to 18 are creating new habitat for the rapidly declining White-letter Hairstreak at Lancing College near Shoreham airport. The butterfly, identified by a distinctive ‘W’ marking on the underside of its wing, has experienced a 93% decline in numbers since the 1970s and is at risk because its caterpillar will only feed on elm. Millions of elm have been lost over the last 40 years due to Dutch elm disease. At least 550 disease-resistant elm trees will be planted to help the White-letter Hairstreak. Children from Sussex primary schools, special educational needs schools, cubs and scouts groups, college students and teenagers working towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will all be involved in tasks from planting to learning more about the butterfly. The butterfly will use the new elm trees when they reach maturity and produce their first flowers, which takes around five to seven years.Volunteers from BC Sussex will then be able to carry out butterfly surveys and help younger volunteers learn how to spot the White-letter Hairstreak and its eggs. Almost half a million people across the UK spent an hour watching the birds that visit their garden or outdoor space as part of the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch earlier this year, counting more than 7.5 million birds in total. The house sparrow remains at the top of the UK Big Garden Birdwatch rankings with almost 1.2 million sightings throughout the weekend but for many species fewer birds were recorded than in 2018. In West Sussex, the top three most common garden visitors, in order, were house sparrow, starling and blue tit. While house sparrows held the top place in the West Sussex charts, residents reported 0.3% fewer sightings than in 2018 and West Sussex was the only county in the South East to show a continuing declining in house sparrows. UK house sparrow numbers have fallen by 56% since the public began tracking these birds as part of the Big Garden Birdwatch, but in recent years, national numbers have slowly started to rise again. For a full round-up of all the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch results and to see which birds were visiting gardens where you live, visit www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch Photo credit: Ray Kennedy (rspb-images.com)

South Downs National Park Sculpture Trail

Intricate pieces of art that tell the story of the history, wildlife and people of heathlands have been designed for an exciting new educational trail in the South Downs National Park. Inspired by stories from communities and drawing upon sources as diverse as the poet Tennyson and a 394-year-old local map, award-winning sculptor Graeme Mitcheson has created seven bespoke stone carvings for the South Downs Heathland Trail. The trail will link seven heathland sites in the National Park to tell the story of why heaths are so important. The Heathlands Reunited team are working with the RSPB, National Trust, Hampshire County Council and Sussex Wildlife Trust to link up heaths at Wiggonholt, Stedham Common, Lavington Plantation, Shortheath Common, Graffham Common, Black Down and Woolbeding. Graeme has spent the past six months working with trained volunteers who collected oral histories and carried out archive research with the local community, including groups and schoolchildren. One of the carving designs, named Sheeppig, is inspired by a map of the Graffham area that was drawn in 1629, showing the heath as commonland. The beautiful map features tiny drawings of animals appearing to be standing on top of one another, and Graeme now intends to create a replica of the drawing in carved sandstone. The Big Seaweed Search

It’s slippery, slimy, smelly stuff but it’s not just something that messes up your day at the seaside. Seaweed is vitally important to our coastal ecology. Seaweed provides protection from waves and storms, shelter for fish and shellfish, energy for intertidal creatures and even food for us. With around 650 seaweed species in the UK, we are living in a global diversity hotspot. The Big Seaweed Search (www.bigseaweedsearch. org) is a citizen science project devised by the Natural History Museum and delivered in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society. The search itself is simple and is designed so that anyone can download the materials and take part on any shore where seaweed is growing. No special knowledge is required and a selection of 14 types of seaweed are featured in a user-friendly guide and recording sheet. 12

13 May - 30 June ‘19

Why not have a nice walk along the beach and at the same time help to provide data so that scientists can discover how our UK seaweeds are changing in abundance and distribution, in response to rising sea surface temperature, increasing ocean acidification and the spread of non-native species. Unicorn Land

Unicorn Land is the most magical experience your child will ever have, with memories to last a lifetime. The UK’s first ever unicorn tour is a wonderful opportunity for children to meet, groom and ride unicorns or have a memorable trip in a unicorn princess carriage. Unicorn Land is an enchanting world, with all things unicorn, including a unicorn inflatable rodeo, theatre shows, unicorn DJ, face painting, bouncy castle, unicorn dress up and the chance to take part in the Great British Slime Off competition with celebrity judges. The idea for Unicorn Land came from 9-year-old Alyssya Carrington, whose father Stafford, an award-winning entrepreneur and event organiser, took her to visit a unicorn for her birthday. When Stafford saw the huge smile on his daughter’s face, he knew he wanted other parents and children to experience the same magical feeling he did when Alyssya first saw a unicorn. Unicorn Dream has partnered with Make a Wish, to make seriously ill children’s wishes come true. For every 10 Unicorn Land tickets sold, they will grant a magical wish for a very special child, giving away hundreds of tickets. During the tour, unicorns will be visiting sick children, spreading happiness and magic across the country. For 15% off your magical experience at Unicorn Land, book today using your exclusive discount code PRIME15 at www.unicorndream.co.uk. Prices are from £37 and adults go free. Little Green Fingers... National Children’s Gardening Week 25 May - 2 June Gardening comes naturally to children. Endlessly curious, children are often delighted to learn first hand where the food on their plate comes from and how big plants grow from tiny seeds. Allowing them to get outdoors and get their hands dirty has incredible benefits and there is no better time to start exploring than National Children’s Gardening Week 2019, which runs from 25 May – 2 June. To help spark your children’s enthusiasm, we have outlined some of our favourite activities to get the kids gardening. Start with Seeds

A great way to introduce your children to gardening is simply by planting a packet of seeds on your windowsill. Use an eggbox as your tray and fill each compartment with potting mix and seeds of your choice. Children aren’t always blessed with patience, so produce like radishes, lettuce, basil and salad cress will all grow very quickly and begin to show results within just a few days.

Summer Half Term Tue 28 – Fri 31 May From 10am – 4pm Plant a Vegetable Box with Labels – £6 Veggie Hunt – Free Visit: squiresgardencentres.co.uk

Create a Pinecone Bird Feeder

All centres except Chertsey

Attract different bird species into your garden by combining mixed seeds, lard, cheese and raisins in a mixing bowl. Tie a string to a pinecone and cover it with your sticky mix, ensuring you fill all the holes. Pop in the fridge until set and hang from the different branches in your garden. Hanging some near a window can be a great way to get a close-up view of your flying friends.

Build a Bee B&B

Bees numbers are falling, so by building them a home you are both having fun gardening with your children and helping the bee populations. You can make one of these easily by cutting the top off a large plastic bottle with scissors (ensure you do this for your children). Gather some bamboo sticks and cut them to the same length as your container, then pack them tightly into your plastic bottle. Using different widths of bamboo is best, as the bees can choose between the different sizes. Attach a hook to the back of your bee house, place in full sun at least one metre off the ground, and simply watch and wait!

Grow a Hanging Harvest

Not everyone has space for a full vegetable patch in their garden, so the humble hanging basket can be a great way to save space, but still pack in the produce. Encourage your children to get their hands messy and fill a lined basket with compost. Put your chosen plants into the compost, and ensure the kids check the basket every day and water regularly. Cherry tomatoes, strawberry plants, chives, basil, parsley and lettuce will all produce loads of tasty food throughout the summer months if cared for well.

To find loads more fun gardening activities to do with your children, visit www.childrensgardeningweek.co.uk Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex

Grow Your Own Five A Day

Encourage your children to eat their 5-a-day by getting them to plant their own vegetable box at Squire’s Garden Centres this May Half Term. Children can plant up a wooden trough with their choice of three tasty vegetable plants, add labels, then take the box home and watch their veggies grow. It’s £6 to create a vegetable box with plant labels, plus there’s also a free Veggie Hunt, where children can follow a trail of questions around the Garden Centre and receive a sticker at the end. There’s no need to book for either activity, simply go to Squire’s Garden Centres between 10am and 4pm from Tuesday 28 Friday 31 May. Each activity takes around 20 minutes and activities operate on a first come first served basis. Squire’s Garden Centres is a successful familyowned horticultural business that serves the local community. There are 15 Squire’s Garden Centres to discover across Surrey, Sussex, North and West London. All Squire’s centres have free parking, a Café Bar serving breakfast, drinks, snacks, lunch and afternoon tea, and most have a children’s play area. For more information, please visit www. squiresgardencentres.co.uk.

Cybertron has fallen. When Optimus Prime sends Bumblebee (a fierce warrior from the Autobot resistance) to defend Earth, his journey to become a hero begins. Charlie Watson, a teenager on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers and repairs the battlescarred robot who is disguised as a Volkswagen Beetle. The Decepticons hunt down the surviving Autobots with the help of a secret agency led by Agent Burns, a high-ranking military officer in Sector 7, a topsecret government agency that deals with extraterrestrial technology and threats. Bumblebee and Charlie team up to protect the world in an action-packed adventure that’s fun for the whole family. Bumblebee is available now on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD from Paramount Home Media Distribution. Primary Times has five Bumblebee DVDs to give away to five lucky readers. For your chance to win, simply tell us which resistance Bumblebee works for. For details of how to enter, please see the bottom of this page.

Nobody visits Eerie-on-Sea in the winter. Especially not when darkness falls and the wind howls around Maw Rocks and the wreck of the battleship Leviathan, where even now some swear they have seen the slimy Malamander creep. Herbert Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, knows that returning lost things to their rightful owners is not easy – especially when the lost thing is not a thing at all, but a girl.
