Is your child just going into their reception class? Families across the country will be following Norman the Bear’s adventure at Bee School this autumn when BookTrust, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, delivers 700,000 copies of children’s picture book The Bumblebear (Random House) to every reception age child in England. This amusing and colourful picture book, written by Nadia Shireen, is being delivered to schools throughout the Autumn Term as part of BookTrust’s Time to Read campaign. Time to Read originally launched in September 2016, encouraging parents and carers of primary school aged children to keep reading with their children - even once they’ve learned to read. Families will love to spend time together with their copy of The Bumblebear, a playful book, with an endearing tale about friendship and loyalty that every child across the country can enjoy and learn from. The Bumblebear was selected for BookTrust by an independent panel of experts and practitioners, who work with reception-aged children. It was the unanimous favourite with the panel for its quality of storytelling, relatable school setting and its ability to be read aloud in a lively manner. But most importantly, it sends a lovely message of inclusivity with a well-resolved fallible element. Find out more about how BookTrust inspires a love of reading in children across the UK at www.booktrust.org.uk.

Making Art from Waste

Eco Beast Sculptures migrated from all over West Sussex and took over a marquee in Horsham Park at ‘Funday Sunday’ in July. Children from all over the county have been busy making Eco Beast Sculptures out of waste resources. You may remember we told you all about it in our last issue. The best sculptures from schools and children’s uniformed groups were brought to the event to form a stunning public exhibition. The upcyling competition challenged children to use objects we’d normally throw away to create a unique art piece. The project demonstrated beautifully the value of what many call rubbish, showing that cardboard kitchen rolls, boxes, aluminium cans, in fact any recyclable or non recyclable material are valuable art resources. The judges had a very hard job choosing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for four age categories. At the event in July, 12 Eco Beast Sculptures were recognised for their imagination, creativity and choice of materials. Upper Beeding School came first in the under 5s age category as well as joint third place in the 5-7 years age group. Warninglid Primary School won the 5-7 years category, followed by Trafalgar School in second place and joint third places for Upper Beeding School, 1st Midhurst Rainbows and Thakeham First School. The winning schools will be inspired by an assembly by Nicola Peel, a multi award winning environmentalist and solutionologist who works in the Amazon, followed by a Green Art Workshop.

Assessing Your Child’s Speech Development

Education News

Education News

The third book in Gareth Jones’ Pet Defenders series, Escape from Planet Bogey follows secret agents Biskit and Mitzy as they uncover the mystery of the disappearing animals. Biskit is on the hunt to find his missing partner, Champ, but soon gets caught up in the Planet Bogey Games. Engage your students with this fast-paced funny series featuring action, mystery and animal antics. Gareth Jones can be booked for a school visit via Authors Aloud, his publicists at Stripes and Piccadilly or directly at garethwrites@hotmail.com.

As parents we always worry about our children. But when it comes to their speech development it is important to first understand what is normal and what is not. So what is normal in speech development? Research shows that the development of speech in young children follows a developmental pattern, with most sounds having been acquired by the age of 5. However, as with other developmental norms, some children acquire new sounds more quickly than others. If you think your child may be struggling, there are lots of different tactics you can use to help. While patience and attentive listening is key, you could also try repeating the mis-pronounced word back to your child, with emphasis on the sound they said incorrectly. Encourage your child to copy sounds in a fun and engaging way – for example making a long ‘ssss’ sound in a story about a snake. Try and make your child hear the difference between the correct and incorrect sound for a word by asking them questions without making them feel criticized. Importantly, if your child struggles to sit and attend activities then you need to work on this first. In order for a child to change their speech they need to be able to think about what they are doing, think about what they should be doing and then have the motivation to change that. This is all very difficult for a child with poor attention. If you are concerned that your child is lagging behind his or her peers, get in touch with your local speech and language therapist. They can help to determine which factors could be affecting your child’s speech and which treatment options would work best for them. Contact Speech House to find out more about specialist, tailored speech therapy for your child. Call 01903 530 681, email info@speech-house.co.uk or visit www.speech-house.com.

Choosing your New School with

A Pull Out and Keep Feature The Primary Times 2017 Choosing your New School feature – the definitive guide to open days for that all important decision.

Choosing your New School

6.

Extra-curricular Activities

Not all learning takes place in the classroom, and it’s often in after school clubs that your child discovers something they are passionate for and may even want to pursue as a career. Extracurricular clubs also open your child up to new friendship groups as well as potentially being beneficial to their mainstream education.

7. Discipline

We all respond to discipline in different ways. Some thrive under supervision and strict rules whereas others find this limiting and hard to work under. Make sure to find out what disciplinary structures are in place at each school and determine which would work most effectively with your child.

The end of the summer holidays marks the beginning of the latest adventure in your child’s life – choosing a secondary school. This task doesn’t have to be a chore however. You and your child can work together to find the perfect place for them to learn, explore and grow. Here is a list of Primary Times’ top ten tips for choosing a school. 1.

Make a List

2.

Open Days

Even if you think you know which school you want to send your child to, it’s important to visit a few just in case, even if it’s just to reaffirm your original choice. Even the best schools can suit some children more than others. Once you have a list of schools in your area, check to make sure each one is logistically possible – does your child meet the entry requirements? Will they be able to travel there easily? Obviously it’s a good idea to visit all the schools you’re thinking of sending your child to. Pay special attention to the environment – you know your child better than anyone so you know best what working atmosphere is most effective for them. Chat to students as well as teachers. It’s good to know that the people teaching want to be there, but if you want a more honest perception of the school you’re more likely to get it from the students. One of the most important things to look for is whether they’re happy – a happy child inevitably means a better education.

3.

League Tables and Ofsted

4.

Grades and Statistics

With all the statistics floating around about schools, it’s hard to know which to trust. Ultimately these reports aren’t everything, especially as their conclusions are usually based on a few days in a school, but they are all still worth looking at. There is a great resource on the government’s performance information website (head to www.gov.co.uk) which gives a detailed and clear analysis of schools in your area. Of course it’s important to look at the grades the school has been achieving, remember to look at the overall statistics as opposed to just the ones from recent history. Final exam results may depend more on the calibre of the original than anything else but tables which purport to show ‘added value’ also have their drawbacks. Each school year can fluctuate significantly depending on the mix of students, so just because results have gone up/down in the last couple of years, it doesn’t mean the overall standard of teaching has. Look at the general pattern of results and compare these to others in the area.

5.

Word of Mouth

Chat to other parents and locals about the different schools. They may know things (both good and bad) which the schools themselves may not have mentioned. It’s always good to hear from other parents what they wish they had/hadn’t done in hindsight and which questions they wish they’d asked. 12

4 Sept - 8 Oct ‘17

8.

Equal Opportunities

9.

Where are their friends going?

10.

Where will your child be happiest?

If your child needs SEN support or struggles in a certain area, what structures are in place to aid them and to make sure they don’t fall behind? Although this shouldn’t dramatically affect your choice, it is worth taking into consideration. If your child finds making friends difficult then you don’t want to make moving schools harder with the added aspect of socialising. However this could also be a good opportunity for your child to boost their social skills, so it’s worth chatting it through to decide what is best. When going to open days or evenings make sure to note your child’s initial reaction and how this changes over the course of the event. Ultimately if your child is happy then that’s the best outcome, and hopefully that will be reflected in their results as well. Above all remember not to worry – despite what the media may say, the standard of our secondary schools is still very high and in many cases getting higher. You are simply picking the best environment to unlock your child’s potential.

Choosing your New School

Making the Step: Primary to Secondary School

At the moment your child is the oldest in the school, but from next September they will suddenly seem so small again. Making that move from primary to secondary school can feel like a giant leap. Education expert and teacher, Dr Stephen Curran, has some helpful tips for parents to get their child through this challenging change.

Be understanding Listen to your child’s apprehensions and help reassure them. If you child has an older sibling or cousin, get them to have a quick chat about what to expect from secondary school. Hearing about the many interesting and exciting aspects of school life will give your child a positive outlook.

Join teams and clubs Encourage your child to take part in the school’s extracurricular activities. Joining school clubs can help build friendships and confidence.

Organisation is key To relieve the stress of the school-run get everything together the night before – materials, books, uniform. Set times for homework to create a structured day and help your child keep up at school. Building a sense of routine at school and home will make your child’s transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible.

One of the Oldest School Uniforms in the World

The Christ’s Hospital uniform is just one of the many fascinating aspects of the School. The instantly recognisable uniform is possibly the oldest in existence and has hardly altered since Tudor times. It consists of a long blue coat, belted at the waist, worn with matching knee breeches, yellow socks and white neck bands. The girls wear the same coat but with matching skirt. The uniform is provided to all pupils free of charge. When the School was founded over four and half centuries ago, the City of London gathered up ‘fatherless and poor children’ and cared for them. Through the generosity of the citizens of London, smart new clothes were provided for the children of Christ’s Hospital. The early uniform was, in accord with Tudor style, very colourful. There has been much speculation as to why blue and yellow was chosen. It was thought that both these colour dyes were not expensive, and blue and yellow could also have been chosen to distinguish the children in the care of Christ’s Hospital from those attending other schools. The linings of the coats were dyed yellow and their ‘stockings’ were always knee length and also dyed yellow. The buttons on the long blue coat depict the head of the School’s founder, King Edward VI and were introduced a little over 200 years ago. Large silver buttons and velvet cuffs are the mark of a Grecian (Sixth Form pupil) who, in his or her final year, has demonstrated outstanding academic performance in more than one subject. If there has been one element of variety, it has been in the individual’s choice of footwear and for many of the pupils at Christ’s Hospital, Dr. Martens have, since 1987, been the perfect accompaniment to the Tudor uniform. For more information about Christ’s Hospital and details of open days visit www.christs-hospital.org.uk.

What’s Better than a Day of Sport? A week of sport, that’s what! Sport Relief is back from 17-23 March. As well as The Mile, there’s a week of activities to choose from. It’s the ultimate ‘feel good, do good’ event for any school. It’s the perfect opportunity to have fun, bring the whole school community together, and teach your pupils about the real difference they can make to people’s lives. Put the date in the school calendar now and make sure your pupils don’t miss out. To get you off to a flying start, Primary Times has worked with Sport Relief to put together a free fundraising pack, full of ideas, posters, balloons and stickers. The pack also contains curriculum-linked resources to make sure that your Sport Relief event is also a time for your pupils to learn about the difference between their lives and the lives of others. Save the date and order your free primary fundraising pack at www.sportrelief. com/primarytimes. Last year thousands of schools and nurseries across the country got involved with anything from running a sponsored-mile to taking part in a 24 hour badminton tournament. Everyone had a great time and raised a staggering £6 million in the process. Michelle Golan, from Childs Hill Primary School in North London, sees Sport Relief as a great way for her pupils to learn about the wider world. She told Primary Times, “Our school believes it is extremely important to support Sport Relief. Our pupils always have lots of fun and work together to help improve the lives of those less fortunate than us. The materials produced by Sport Relief are really useful and inspiring, and help our pupils to see how their contributions can help change the lives of others forever.” 16

Choosing your New School

This October, Mary’s Meals is inviting you to reach out to children living in poverty by supporting the #PorridgeSmiles campaign To request your free Porridge Smiles fundraising pack, please visit www.worldporridgeday.com

Mary’s Meals

Mary’s Meals are asking you to bring hope to a hungry child with this World Porridge Day. Children all over the world are preparing for the new term, including more than 1.2 million learners who receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals. The charity works with some of the world’s poorest communities to set up school feeding programmes that encourage children to attend class, learn, and work towards a better future. World Porridge Day, 10 October, celebrates the huge difference that a daily mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals makes in the lives of chronically hungry children. This October, schools across the UK will be joining in with the Porridge Smiles fundraising campaign to send a real message of hope to children living in poverty. Mary’s Meals is inviting you to host a porridge party fundraiser at school, any time in October. It’s a great way to bring staff, pupils and parents together and everyone will have fun creating a smiley face in their bowl of porridge using tasty toppings. To request your free Porridge Smiles fundraising pack – which includes tips for setting up your party and a poster to publicise your event – visit www.worldporridgeday.com and complete the online form. You’ll also be able to see some of the best Porridge Smiles from last year in our 2016 Hall of Fame. It costs just 7p to provide one meal, so your school’s fundraising will make a huge difference to children receiving Mary’s Meals. The charity is committed to spending at least 93p of every £1 donated directly on charitable activities. 20

Out of School Activities A Life-Saving Skill

Learning to swim is the one sport that could actually one day save your life. It is one of the best forms of exercise as it promotes strength and mobility and improves cardiovascular fitness giving you greater levels of stamina and endurance. Water exercise offers many physical, social and mental benefits including improved strength and flexibility, better muscular endurance and balance and increased energy. It is a sport which, once learned, can be enjoyed with friends or alone. Some people with physical limitations cannot perform land exercises, so swimming is the perfect solution for keeping fit. Exercising in the water is safer than

working out on land because water supports your weight and doesn’t strain your back or knees no matter how hard or gently you work. So make sure that you and your children learn to swim – it really is the one sport you can’t be without.

An Interview with Lauren Child Primary Times have been talking to Lauren Child, the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate. A writer and illustrator, she is best known for the Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort series. She has received numerous awards and was given an MBE in 2010 for her services to literature. Her latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is due to be released on 28 September.

nine years old, and as soon as I finished it, I read it all over again. Another is Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking. I loved her because she was a child like no other. She was a girl and she was funny and there weren’t enough books about funny girls in those days. She’s very courageous and doesn’t really care what people think about her in the best possible way. She doesn’t worry about what she’s wearing and doing and she is able to be herself.

How does it feel to be the new Waterstones’ Children’s Laureate?

When you were growing up did you feel you could be yourself like Pippi Longstocking?

It is a great honour but it’s also a great responsibility. It feels slightly unreal too, partly because my career began almost 20 years ago, exactly the time Quentin Blake was the first Children’s Laureate. Quentin was a huge influence on my becoming an illustrator. I loved his illustrations really before I knew who he was as a person. There was the Grimble and the illustrations from Betsy Byers 18th Emergency, my favourite book as a child. And I remember watching him on television back in the days when the BBC had a programme called Jackanory. It was so wonderful to see live drawing as the story was told, and in fact Quentin Blake was the first illustrator I realised was an actual real person. It was so different in those days. You didn’t have the same chance to meet authors and illustrators as you do now.

What do you plan to do as Laureate?

I’m interested in championing children’s creativity and I want to encourage children to spend a little of their time looking, listening and making things because they’re driven to create. I’ll be starting a blog soon called ‘Staring Into Space’ where I’m going to hopefully help inspire that. I also want to champion reading and drawing for pleasure and to elevate children’s book illustration to the level of other art forms. I think illustration is seen as something less than fine art, and writing for children as slightly less than writing for adults. I think we can be a little bit patronising about it. That’s a shame, because we know that literature is life-changing for children and the first art we really get up close to is in books. That’s where we begin with reading and storytelling. We do children a disservice if we can’t see and celebrate its power. I also want to talk about diversity, as inclusivity is really important to me. There aren’t enough books written by and about people of all kinds of backgrounds and culture. It’s important because if as a child you don’t see yourself on the front cover of a book then how do you feel part of society?

Which books, authors and illustrators are your main inspirations? I have so many. When I was a child I loved The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I remember reading it when I was about

No. I was terrible at being myself. I was very self conscious and worried about what people were thinking - am I wearing the right thing, am I saying the right thing? All of my characters in my books now are at least moving in the direction of being themselves.

How important do you think it is for children to daydream and stare out of the window?

I think it’s vital. You can’t come up with anything without a certain amount of boredom, because boredom is the beginning of invention. Solving problems and letting your mind wander and find the edges of something. It’s how you get to an inspired place and become creative. When I get really stuck in my own work now, I go out and look around at things. I go to the cinema, an art gallery, I put on the radio, I tune into people’s conversations. You hear these amazing things. And when I hear or see something interesting I write it down. You end up with notebooks full of interesting things.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing a chapter book for younger readers, for around six to nine-year-olds. It’s very, very illustrated because I missed drawing so much when I was writing my Ruby Redfort series. So - lots of drawings. My new Charlie and Lola book A Dog With Nice Ears is coming out in the Autumn. It was inspired by looking at all the dogs in the park near our home with my daughter and imagining what kind of dog we would like to have.

Do you have any advice for children that are starting to write?

My advice would be to write what you enjoy. You need to write about something that interests you. It might be something funny that you see out of the window or something that you’ve imagined or about your family. You’ve got to enjoy what you’re writing or you won’t be able to carry on.You’ve got to let things develop, listen, and watch how people talk and interact. Dig deep into your own memory and try and tap into how things feel.

Lauren Child’s latest book in the Charlie and Lola series, ‘A Dog With Nice Ears’, is published by Orchard Books on 28 September and will be available from high street bookstores and online at a recommended priced of £12.99.
