School’s Out for Summer..... and Primary Times is going to be your best friend this school holiday! Welcome to the biggest help you are going to use this summer. There’s no need to get stressed, no need for the constant “what are we doing today”, simply keep your copy of Primary Times handy and look through our comprehensive listings to see what’s on. Primary Times has the best set of listings for primary aged children anywhere. Nobody does it better! We have worked night and day to source them and have spent hours checking, double checking and proof reading them. Having said that we do produce some of them a long time in advance so do remember to check with the venue for any updates before planning a trip. We don’t usually mention cost and full details as we just don’t have room so do check first if you need more information. As well as being loved for our listings, our competitions are pretty popular too! In this magazine look out for a chance to win an Xbox One and copy of LEGO The Incredibles game. We have a fantastic word search competition with a top prize of the Xbox One, game and goody bag plus two runners up prizes of LEGO The Incredibles goody bags. Don’t forget to enter all our other competitions too and remember to include your details if you do enter. We can’t notify you if you don’t let us know who you are.... Farewell and good luck to all our Year 6 readers off to secondary school. There isn’t a secondary school version of Primary Times but if you still want to see us take a look in your local library.

Schools Benefit from Energy Offer

New customers signing up to buy their gas and electricity from Your Energy Sussex this summer can nominate a West Sussex school to receive a £20 donation from the supplier when they switch gas and electricity or a £10 donation for a single fuel switch. The offer is open to all residents in Sussex until 24 July. Your Energy Sussex is a new, local energy supplier that was set up by West Sussex County Council to encourage households to switch and save money. It is run on a not-for-profit basis, using any surplus to help local people who are struggling to pay their bills, and works hard to keep customers on its best available tariff. It is a partnership between West Sussex County Council and Robin Hood Energy and is also supported by other councils across Sussex including East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council. Information about the schools offer is available online. If you would prefer to switch over the phone, quote ‘WS Schools’ and tell the customer advisor which school you would like to benefit from the donation. You can get a quote online at www.yourenergysussex.org. uk or by calling 08009 520 001.

This is just one of the 20 incredible migration stories in this book. Travel around the globe with some of the world’s most incredible animals and discover their unique migration stories. Animals of all shapes and sizes make epic journeys across our planet, through harsh weather, avoiding hungry predators, in their efforts to survive. Follow the emperor penguin through snow, ice and bitter temperatures. Watch as the great white shark swims 10,000 km in search of seals, track huge herds of elephants, on their yearly hunt for water and be amazed at the millions of red crabs, migrating across Christmas Island. Written by Mike Unwin, a UK Travel Writer of the Year, and illustrated by Jenni Desmond, winner of the New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book, prepare yourself for a journey like no other. Follow the amazing migrations of these 20 creatures: Arctic tern, barn swallow, bar-headed goose, ruby-throated hummingbird, osprey, wandering albatross, whooping crane, emperor penguin, African elephant, blue wildebeest, caribou, straw-coloured fruit bat, humpback whale, green turtle, Southern pilchard, salmon, great white shark, monarch butterfly, globe skimmer dragonfly, Christmas Island red crab. The pupils at Billingshurst Primary School were set a task by Devine Homes to use their imagination to create a garden for their new show home at Hammond’s Mill, Amblehurst Green, Billingshurst. From bug hotels and chocolate fountains to mazes, trampolines and orange shaped treehouses, their creativity would have impressed Alice in Wonderland. The winner of the competition was Hattie in Reception, who will see her design come alive at the show home garden in Spring 2019. The design included a beautiful drawing of a family of Gnomes, which the judges really liked. There was a winner in each group as the judging was a near impossible task, with entries from almost every child in the school. The runners up impressed the judges at Devine Homes with a variety of designs including coloured cobblestone paths, a toy car race track around the perimeter of the garden, pebble paths giving the garden a stately home feel, water features, a vegetable garden, a sparkling fish pond and chalk paving to football goals. Billingshurst truly excelled in their task. For more information about Billingshurst Primary School, please visit www.billingshurstpri.w-sussex.sch.uk.

The Great Green Invention A national award was presented to seven pupils from the William Penn Primary School in Coolham, in the Better Energy School Awards. Their ‘Great Green Invention,’ was created using a credit card sized computer and £100 budget. The children received their award on 14 June in a presentation at London Zoo. 159 schools and 21,350 children got involved with the project run by the Young Peoples Trust for the Environment. The winners, aged 10–11 years old, from William Penn Primary School won the award for the Southern/Central region. Other winners were awarded in the North, Scotland and Wales/West regions. The pupil’s invention, the Go for Green Ethical and Sustainable Clothes Detector Game, raises awareness of how environmentally unfriendly clothing and the fashion industry can be. The game gets the players to read information about five different T-shirts and then attach a red, amber or green star to each. This displays which T-shirts are the most environmentally friendly. The game reveals some hard truths about the fashion industry as it explains the 31,000 nautical mile journey of a cotton T-shirt. Second to fossil fuel it is the most polluting industry. The winners delivered a professional and confident presentation on stage in front of children’s authors, MPs, famous actors and around 200 children from three other schools who had also won the award for their region.

Plant a Pot for Pollinators

Young gardeners are being asked to help the UK’s beleaguered butterflies, bees and moths by making their area the most pollinatorfriendly in the UK. Butterfly Conservation is trying to discover which UK area is home to the most butterfly-friendly gardens after it was revealed that butterflies are declining faster in urban areas than in the countryside. The wildlife charity is urging nature lovers and gardeners to take part in their ‘Plant Pot for Pollinators’ campaign and provide nectar sources for pollinating insects in their outdoor spaces. The project is encouraging householders to plant a pot with nectar sources such as Shasta Daisy, Cosmos and Catmint. Those taking part can plot the location of their pot on the Plant Pots for Pollinators website and help reveal the most pollinator friendly county in the UK. Bees, moths, butterflies, hoverflies and beetles have a significant role to play in pollinating wild flowers. Urban gardens act as important refuges for pollinators, but these insects are increasingly under threat from habitat loss, agricultural intensification and climate change. Previously widespread garden species such as the Small Tortoiseshell and Garden Tiger moth have seen their numbers plummet. By planting flowers such as French Marigold, Calendula and Dahlia gardeners provide food for butterflies such as Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral and Peacock, while providing a few Thyme and Lavender plants will attract species of bees and other pollinating insects. Pollinating insects are essential for the fertilisation of many crops, including fruit, seeds and oils as well as many plants, trees and wild flowers. A simple pot of Lavender or Buddleia on the doorstep can do the trick, and a well-planted window box can be a butterfly magnet. And don’t forget moths - stepping outside at night and watching moths buzz around your flowers is a magical experience. International Bat Night

International Bat Night is a popular annual event to draw public awareness to threatened bat populations across the world. Bat Night has taken place every year since 1997 in more than 30 countries on the last full weekend of August. This year, International Bat Night is on 25 and 26 August. Bats are mammals, in fact they are the only mammals that can fly. Like other mammals, including ourselves and many of our pets, they have hair or fur on their bodies and are warm-blooded. In the UK, there are 17 different types of bats. Many people think bats are blind, but in fact they can see almost as well as humans. However, at night, their ears are more important than their eyes - they use a special sonar system called ‘echolocation,’ meaning they find things using echoes. Why not see and hear bats in their natural environment by taking part in a range of events organised by local bat groups, wildlife trusts, countryside rangers and other organisations across the country? In your local area, be sure to find a bat walk over the holidays. They often take place at dusk. Bat walk leaders have equipment specialised to hear the bat’s echoes and cries, called a bat detector.

Mary’s Meals Backpack Project

With the end of the school year fast approaching, charity Mary’s Meals are asking you to help impoverished children thrive in school by donating used backpacks to Mary’s Meals. The UK-based school-feeding charity has been transporting lorry-loads of school bags to Malawi since 2005. Earlier this year, it was announced that, in total, supporters had gifted an incredible 500,000 filled school bags through The Backpack Project to children receiving life-changing school meals.

The Backpack Project is particularly well supported by young people as part of school recycling projects, which encourage pupils to donate schoolbags and suitable clothing at the end of the final term each year. A backpack – filled with a selection of notepads, pens, school uniform/games kit and basic hygiene items – provides a wonderful gift to an impoverished child and encourages them to excel at school. Supporters can donate complete backpacks and/or individual items. Delighted Lagia, 13, who attends school in Malawi said, “I’m so happy because I have received a backpack. Inside, I found a dress, pens and a hardcover book. I will use the bag every day to carry pens, and books when I am coming to school.” Mary’s Meals currently provides a daily school meal to 1,257,278 children in 15 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Where Mary’s Meals are provided, there is a rise in rates of enrolment, attendance and academic performance. It costs just £13.90 to provide a child with Mary’s Meals for a whole school year, and, as a low-cost charity at least 93p from every £1 donated to Mary’s Meals is spent directly on its charitable work. To get involved, either as a school or as an individual, with The Backpack Project or to donate to Mary’s Meals please visit www. marysmeals.org.uk

RSPCA’s Compassionate Class

A pilot RSPCA scheme that helps children to learn about animal welfare is now being rolled out nationally - and your school could get involved. Earlier this year, the RSPCA launched a pilot teaching resource, Compassionate Class, for schools in Manchester to encourage children to learn about animal welfare. The aim is to inspire the next generation of compassionate individuals and prevent cruelty to animals in the future. Following the huge success of the pilot project, the animal welfare charity is rolling the scheme out nationally and Key Stage 2 classes are being asked to sign up. The resources are designed to fit into the national curriculum covering the PSHE in England and PSE in Wales curriculum plus they support Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education (SMSC) and other core subjects. The programme uses enquiry-led learning to create debate about animal welfare which is promoted by the interactive resources available for schools who sign up. There will be more resources for schools to try this year and the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt by entering a competition to win the title of ‘The Most Compassionate Class of 2019’. Plus there are a number of visits to RSPCA animal centres to be won so the children can see the RSPCA in action and the animals they care for. For more information, or to sign-up your school, visit www.rspca.org.uk/compassionateclass
