How many times have your children complained because they are no good at sport, can’t do maths or really struggle with exams? If children believe they can’t do something, the chances are they won’t try. But what if they really could get better at anything they tried their hand at? Matthew Syed is setting out to help children excel at just about anything they put their mind to. You Are Awesome inspires and empowers young readers with a toolkit for developing a growth mindset and finding the confidence to realise their potential. The first children’s book from the Times journalist, two-time Olympian and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed, takes the themes and principles of his award-winning adult novels and recasts them for a 9+ readership. Using real life stories (concerning the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams and JK Rowling) Syed demonstrates that success really is earned rather than pre-ordained, and that our abilities can be transformed through practice. With a growth mindset, based on hard work and determination, practice, self-belief and resilience, there’s no reason why anyone can’t achieve (almost) anything. Practical, insightful and positive, this is the book to help children build resilience, embrace their mistakes and grow into successful, happy adults. Matthew Syed’s number one best-selling book You Are Awesome is available for £9.99 online and from all good high street retailers.

Help your child excel at anything they put their mind to! The first childrenʼs book from Times journalist and bestselling mindset author Matthew Syed will inspire and empower young readers to find the confidence to realise their potential. ʻI loved seeing my daughter race through this book and become inspired to be the best version of her that she could be and work smarter, not harder. It is for any child who might be feeling that everyone is getting places except them, and challenges the thing that holds you back (mostly your own insecurities). My daughter cannot wait to take it into school and share it with her classmatesʼ RACHEL, PARENT REVIEWER

World Fishing Day

How to read a map, how to fish and how to polish shoes, are just some of the life skills modern dads are no longer teaching their children according to a new study. Data revealed that 53 percent of British fathers have never taken their children fishing. World Fishing Day, which will take place on 23 June, will consist of a network of community fishing events and a free-toair 24-hour live fishing broadcast from around the world. It will be broadcasting from over 24 locations to showcase the incredible diversity of fishing cultures and opportunities that the world has to offer. The feeds will feature local fishing experts and celebrities sharing their passion, knowledge and skill with the world.

Broadcasts from the UK include Carp Wars, a four-way battle for Carpy supremecy, and River Test, a special presented by actor and fly fishing enthusiast, James Murray. For more information, please visit www.worldfishingday.com.

Create & Grow a Veggie Box at Squire’s

With more people focused on healthy eating, and the drive to reduce plastic food packaging, growing your own vegetables has never been so popular. In very little space you can grow delicious fresh vegetables that don’t need to be shrinkwrapped and sat on a supermarket shelf for days. Recognising this, Squire’s Garden Centres are running an activity for children during May Half Term. From Monday 28 May until Friday 1 June (10am-4pm) children can choose three tasty vegetable plants and be shown how to plant them in a wooden trough. Then they get to decorate their own plant labels and take the whole thing home to look after and watch the vegetables grow. So encourage your children to eat their veg by planting a vegetable box at Squire’s. It costs £6 plus. There’s also a free “Veggie Hunt”, where children follow a trail of questions around the garden centre and receive a sticker when completed. Each activity takes around 20 minutes and all children must be accompanied by an adult. There’s no need to book for either activity, simply turn up on the day. During the school holidays there are craft activities and you can drop in for free. Across the year there are many new exhibitions and the displays are changed regularly, so there is always something new to see.

An Interview with Holly Smale by Hannah Draisey I enjoyed the facts Holly Smale, writer of the popular teenage novel series Geek Girl, you was recently interviewed by young journalist Hannah Draisey about her books and her inspiration for the series. Hannah conducted the included interview by phone as part of the BBC School Report project when she in Geek was a patient attending the Evelina Children’s Hospital’s own school in Girl. What South London. Hannah has kindly let us publish her interview. interests What made you want to write Geek Girl? you in I wanted to be a writer since I was four but didn’t know what to write about. facts like I was 29 when I decided to write a story about my past. these?

Getting to Know Geek Girl

How long does it take you to write a book? Each of my books took a different amount of time to write. The first Geek Girl book took three years to write because I was working full time and writing at the weekends. The second book took a year as I didn’t have to work and had more experience. The books I write now take six to nine months each.

Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from everything. I listen to conversations, I pay attention to how people walk and dress, I am incredibly nosey. I use experiences from my own life, if I overhear something funny or interesting I might include it in my books.

Which books did you enjoy reading when you were growing up? When I was very little, I read the Faraway Tree series. When I got a bit older, I read The Borrowers and Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables helped me when I was going through a difficult time.

Which books have you enjoyed reading recently? I’ve just finished reading the Game of Thrones books. It’s the first time I’ve read a fantasy novel. I’ve enjoyed the difference in genre. As a writer it’s important to read different types of books. You can sometimes get stuck reading just one genre.

Do you ever read your own books? Yes, I don’t read them for pleasure because I know them so well and I know what made me write the books. Because it’s a series, when starting to write the next book I go back and read all the books before that again. I remind myself what’s going on and the type of tempo the story is paced at.

I was a lot like Harriet (Geek Girl character) when I was younger and still am now. Facts are a different way of seeing the world and facts are Harriet’s narrative voice. It is also a way of showing Harriet’s personality and character.

Are any of the characters in Geek Girl based on real people? No character is the same as a person in real life, most of them are fictional however a couple are very similar to people I know. Harriet’s dad for example is very similar to my own dad. Harriet was very similar to me as a teenager. Some of the characters are based on a mix of different people I’ve met.

To finish, Hannah also asked Holly some questions about herself. What advice would you give your teenage self? I’d tell her to be brave. When I was younger, I blamed myself for things that happened; I’d go back and give myself a hug.

What is your favourite flavour of ice cream? What a good question. Salted caramel ice cream and Turkish delight ice cream, which is very hard to find. Basically anything, I love ice cream!

Holly Smale’s first published book, Geek Girl, won the 2014 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and she’s gone from strength to strength ever since. There are six books in the Geek Girl series, all published in paperback by Harper Collins and are available in High Street and online bookshops. Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex

Solar Buddies is the first refillable child friendly sunscreen applicator that allows you to use a sunscreen of your choice. The applicator assists parents, teachers and school staff in applying the lotion to children in a safe and convenient way whilst having the benefit of less mess and no waste! Kelli and Laura first had their idea for the applicator whilst discussing the ‘No Touch Policies’ most schools now have in place. “So, why not do something to help?” they thought! Solar Buddies are great at giving parents peace of mind when their children are in school by knowing their child can top up their sunscreen. Solar Buddies are also a great teaching tool when explaining to your child the importance of being sunsafe. They are great for backpacks and for those fun family days out.
