A West Sussex school has won a national fundraising competition, after taking part in a brain tumour awareness campaign in support of a pupil affected by the disease. Jolesfield C of E School, in Partridge Green, was awarded £100 worth of book vouchers by Primary Times –sponsors of the competition – in recognition of its fundraising achievements. Staff members and pupils took part in the Brain Tumour Research charity’s annual Wear a Hat Day campaign and raised £450 – the largest amount raised per pupil of any school. Sennen Calver, a six-year-old pupil at Jolesfield School, inspired her classmates and teachers to fundraise. Her dad, Daniel Calver, of Partridge Green, is recovering from a second operation to treat his brain tumour. Sennen’s proud mum Natalie, told Primary Times, “I’m so grateful for the school. It was a very special event and the pupils had a wonderful time wearing a selection of hats. Some of the children decided to make their own headpieces and it was a great way to introduce them to fundraising.” Wear A Hat Day has raised over a million pounds since Brain Tumour Research was launched 10 years ago. The big day each March, sees schools, workplaces, families and individuals across the UK fundraising and taking part in fun events to raise awareness of brain tumours and help fund lifesaving research.
Eco-Friendly Charity Saves 300 Tons of Wood Waste from Landfill Local award winning charity, the Aldingbourne Trust, is proud to be part of the National Community Wood Recycling Project network with their Wood@ Aldingbourne recycling enterprise. They will collect your waste timber in an environmentally sound way preventing it going to landfill and are cheaper than hiring a skip. The wood that is collected is sorted on site at the Country Centre, and they have a regular donation of scaffold boards from a local scaffolding company, which are perfect for use in the garden. The Wood team also works with people who create handmade items such as bird houses and other ornamental items. Any wood that is not suitable for sale is not wasted. It is used to run the biomass boiler at the Country Centre, providing heating across the site. The Aldingbourne Trust takes pride in being sustainable and holds the environment at their heart. Their newly opened Quarry Building at the Country Centre has solar panels on the roof to generate electricity and the building has been designed to let in natural light helping to reduce electricity consumption. The decking around the building is made from recycled tyres and the rainwater harvesting system provides water to flush the toilets. The Aldingbourne Trust is a local charity that helps people with learning disabilities and/or autism to have the same opportunities as everyone else to live independent lives.Visit their website, www.aldingbournetrust.org for information about the wood recycling project, venue hire facilities, becoming a corporate volunteer and to find out more about their award winning charity.

A group of pupils from Fordwater School have shown they are up to the mark after successfully completing West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s FireBreak programme. Watched on by family and friends, the special educational needs and disability (SEND) pupils took part in a Pass Out Parade at Bognor Regis Fire Station. The parade came after a week of intense training, team building exercises and getting to grips with the fire appliances, giving the pupils an insight into life as a firefighter. Chris Bowles, Station Commander at Bognor Regis Fire Station, presented the pupils with their medals and certificates and told Primary Times, “The pupils have been an absolute pleasure to work with. They have been so polite and have all looked out for each other during the course. Just watching the sheer amount of effort they have put into everything they have done this week has made us all incredibly proud. “FireBreak is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn more about the work we do as a fire and rescue service, while also teaching some valuable skills such as teamwork, discipline and self-confidence, which we hope they will be able to take away with them.”

plans when you don’t know what the weather’s going to be like. One of the delights of skating at Crawley Ice Rink is that it’s under cover and even if the snow is gently falling outside, you’re not going to find yourself sliding into a snow drift. While Grandma watches, sipping her hot chocolate, she’s not going to get soaked to the skin by a rainstorm. Why not make a day of it? Stay for lunch. Crawley Ice Rink have teamed up with Smith & Western, literally a few steps from their front door, where you can buy sumptuous food and hot drinks to warm yourselves up. Look out for the special offers with your purchases. Tilgate Park has plenty to offer. After lunch maybe you could investigate the Nature Centre, finish off your shopping at the Christmas market or even visit Santa in his Grotto. For more information, visit www.crawleyicerink.co.uk.

Safe Trick or Treating in Brighton this Halloween
SEALIFE Brighton Gets Spooky for Halloween
For children, Halloween is the one day in the year when they can dress up as a ghoul and receive free sweets. However, knowing who they can safely trick-or-treat can be a source of worry for parents.
Discover the magic of the ocean with SEALIFE Brighton’s 5,500 amazing creatures, and explore their new Ocean Display as it transitions from day to night, an experience which is a first for the UK. Dance along bio florescent tropical shorelines and marvel in the beauty of coral reefs. Explore the caves of the deep and imagine yourself as a lionfish.
To ensure children can enjoy the occasion, and ease the minds of parents, Phileas Fogg’s World of Adventures in Brighton is hosting three special, family friendly, Halloween activities through its series of four-dimensional themed sets. Trick – have a frightening tour of dark and smoky Victorian London. The 30-minute experience is a spooky, gruesome and ghoulish walk through the capital’s streets. Suitable for children from eight years old, it costs £12.50 per person. Treat - Travel from Japan, on-board a ship, take a stint in jail, visit the wild west, travel through a vortex and end in the royal throne room finding treats along the way. Suitable for children age three up, the experience lasts 40 minutes and costs £12.50 per person. Horrible Mysteries – Board a train and take a trip through Venice, Egypt, the jungle and on to India. On the trip you will touch and smell the world of mysteries and learn fun gruesome facts from a plague doctor in Venice through to a mummification in an Egyptian tomb. The attraction is suitable for children from five years old, lasts 40 minutes and costs £9.95 per person. Graham Owen, Director of Phileas Fogg, told Primary Times, “We are offering three Halloween experiences for families to enjoy safely. From the slightly scary to some gory facts, there’s fun for everyone with plenty of sweets topping the encounters off.” These day time activities will take place every day until 3 November and can be booked online at www.phileasfoggsworldofadventures. co.uk.

Happy Halloween and More Days Out...
Forest School Adventure Learn how to light a fire without matches, build a shelter to sleep in, cook on a fire, hunt for bugs and much more. Forest School Adventure is the ultimate guide for children of how to interact with nature and gain outdoor skills to bring them closer to the natural environment. There is something for all ages; younger children can be immersed in messy play and crafts, whilst older ones can learn more complex skills such as sourcing water and how to light a fire safely. Filled with simple steps children can learn how to build shelters, identify plants and tie different knots which will help them to gain knowledge on what it is like to survive in the outdoors. This advice is given by authors Naomi Walmsley and Dan Westall who are bushcraft experts and educators with the passion for teaching others how to get the most of the great outdoors safely. Having undertaken a five-month Stone-Age immersion in the US, where they lived in the wilderness without any modern equipment, the book is filled with their helpful advice of what they experienced and entertaining anecdotes. Forest School Adventure will educate children on how to be safe and imaginative in the outdoors, whilst also helping families to reconnect to the wild in an exciting and creative way.
