Children are Encouraged to Write It Pink Lady® apples and the Guild of Food Writers have announced their partnership in the Guild’s Write It competition for young food writers. The competition encourages children from three age groups (10 and under, 11 to 14 and 15 to 18) to capture one of their favourite food experiences on the page. This year’s theme is Partnerships: this could be the combination of favourite foods, cooking or eating with friends or family, or your ultimate food partnership such as apple crumble and custard, bacon and eggs, strawberries and cream or perhaps something more unusual. This year’s judges include the Guild’s President, Xanthe Clay, and Stefan Gates, awardwinning documentary maker, TV presenter and author of books on food and science for young people. Also on the judging panel is Jo Ingleby, Cook of the Year in the BBC’s Food and Farming Awards 2015, and award-winning food writers Diana Henry and Felicity Cloake. They’ll use their collective experience, enthusiasm for food and drink and love of a good read to find and celebrate the outstanding work in each age group. The competition closing date is Sunday 30 April. To enter visit www.pinkladyapples.co.uk. For more details on the competition and prizes, visit www.gfw.co.uk.

Support Chestnut Tree House

Children’s Hospice Week (22 to 28 May 2017) is the UK’s only awareness and fundraising week for children with life-shortening conditions and their families and the palliative care services that support them. The aim of the week is to improve public understanding of what life is really like for families caring for seriously ill children. The round the clock care that children with life-shortening conditions need impacts on the entire family. Families often find it difficult to spend quality time together as it can be complicated to do even the simplest activities. It also highlights how precious family time is and how the wide range of children’s palliative care services across the UK provide vital support to thousands of families and help them treasure their time together. Children’s palliative care charities across the UK, including Chestnut Tree House, provide vital care and support, helping families be families. They receive very little central government funding - less than 7% of their annual £3.5 million care costs. They rely heavily on the support of the local community to raise the funds they need to continue providing this vital care to local children and their families. Chestnut Tree House is encouraging people to support them during Children’s Hospice Week by holding their own fundraising event and the hospice’s Fundraising Team have got lots of ideas. Why not hold a Superhero Day at your School or workplace – dress up as your favourite Superhero and organise themed events? You could put on a cake sale, coffee morning or afternoon tea or think up your own fun activity. The Fundraising Team are on hand to provide ideas, materials, advice and support. Contact them via www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk or call the Fundraising Team on 01903 871 820.

Arr We There Yet?

Australian entertainment company Head First Acrobats will be returning to the Brighton Fringe this year with a rip-roaring and swashbuckling adventure in which three sailors hit the high seas in search of treasure. A scallywag pirate, a muscular sailor and a chef with a seafood allergy make for a hopeless crew as they fight for the title of Captain aboard the ship. Walking the plank becomes the high flying teeterboard and cooking for the crew involves juggling knives and steering the ship spinning upside down in the roue cyr. Head First Acrobats have created a show full of fabulous pirate themed circus mayhem. With amazing acrobatics and hilarious slapstick comedy, this production promises to give all a great time. ‘Arr We There Yet?’ will play at the Brighton Speigeltent: Bosco on 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-31 May and 1-4 June at 2pm. Tickets cost £8 or £6 for concessions.

The guinea pigs of Dandeville love munching dandelion leaves so much that slowly but surely dandelions are disappearing from all over town. Christopher Nibble knows that crunch time has come when there is just one dandelion left – but will this plucky little guinea pig have the flower power to save the day? Adapted from the charming picture book by Charlotte Middleton for children aged 2-7 (and their big people too) and told with Topsy Turvy Theatre’s own blend of energetic storytelling, handmade puppets, original music and stunning scenery, Christopher Nibble is an uplifting story of one guinea pig’s selfless undertaking to help halt the disappearance of the delicious dandelion forever! Christopher Nibble is showing at Otherplace Brighton, The Warren: Main House on 7 May at 11am, and 8 - 9 May 4pm. Tickets are £9 full price £7 concessions. In this brand new family comedy with music and puppetry the Story Squad introduces a whole new cast of weird and wonderful Grimms characters. Meet Godfather Death, Hans My Hedgehog and a deceased chicken in an irreverent, comic quest to re-tell… The Grimmest of Grimm Tales. Performed by an ensemble cast of four fantastic character actors, the show takes its comedy cue from a broad range of influences from Horrible Histories to Jackanory. Comedy, clowning, stunning puppets, original music, rapping and a lot of barely organised chaos are the order of the day. Three Weeks described it as “Witty staging… lots of charisma… quality storytelling” See the Grimmest of Grim Tales at Sweet St. Andrew’s - Venue 263 from 27 May to 4 June at 3.15pm.w
