Inspire them to explore science with…
Professor Brian Cox
Primary Times teams up with Professor Brian Cox OBE to discuss the importance of science for children, his own childhood inspirations, and his exciting world tour ‘Universal: Adventures in Space and Time’ Our aim is to get the nation’s children inspired by science. For you, why is it important for children to take an interest? Science is above all else a way of thinking, it’s a way of celebrating curiosity. The central idea is that we don’t know everything. It’s often easy to be afraid of not knowing, when actually it’s the most exciting thing, because then you can go and find out. You might be the person who finds out for the first time whether there is life on mars. What advice would you give to children who are aspiring to get a job or career in science? I would say stay excited and stay curious. Understand that if you want to be a scientist you can be. It’s easy to think you have to be a strange genius to be a scientist. There’s a really famous story about Einstein going into a school and saying “When I was your age, I was no Einstein”.
Follow us on Twitter - @PT_Sussex
Can you tell us a little bit more about your upcoming world tour ‘Universal: Adventures in Space and Time’? At one level it is huge, high-resolution screens showing these amazing pictures from Hubble Space Telescope. But also, we simulated a black hole. We used the techniques that were used to develop the film Interstellar to simulate what it would be like to go and fly up to, orbit and dive into a black hole, and what we know about what happens. So, it is I hope a spectacular experience that’s also designed to make us think about our place in the universe.
What top tips could you give to parents who are trying to introduce science into their home for their children? Science is about doing science ultimately. You can get one of those apps on your phone that show you what the stars are, you’d be surprised by how easy it is to recognise what that is in the sky. And I believe that’s what it is to deliver a little bit of wonder to your children. I can’t think of anything that’s easier and more rewarding than just that. Professor Brian Cox’s tour Universal is on sale now - www.briancoxlive.co.uk.

Did you hear the one about Castlewood Primary? Foxes class from Castlewood Primary in Horsham, West Sussex have been revealed as the winners of Beano’s Britain’s Funniest Class national joke competition. Their joke, “At the bank a lady asked me to check her balance, so I pushed her over” received over a third of the final votes crowning them the ultimate champions. The national competition, launched in April this year, challenged primary school classes across the country to submit their best gags to be in with a chance of taking home the title of Britain’s Funniest Class 2019. Ten schools were shortlisted by comedian Harry Hill along with a panel of Beano’s gag masters before being put to a public vote on www.Beano.com to decide the winner. Beano.com presenter Emma Shaw presented the class with the official Beano Britain’s Funniest Class trophy along with prizes including a bundle of Beano annuals and comic subscriptions. The class will also be treated to a special joke workshop to help further hone their budding comedy skills.
Wisborough Green
The children at Wisborough Green Primary School have unveiled their brand-new school magazine, We Are Wisborough! The 24-page magazine features not only fun and informative content for people of all ages, but also includes an interview by former Wisborough Green Primary School pupil, and England rugby star, Billy Twelvetrees. The magazine was produced to raise much needed funds for a small village school of just 200 pupils and also to provide an opportunity for children to learn new skills and build their confidence along the way. Created by the school’s newly formed Marketing Club, We Are Wisborough magazine was conceived by a parent with a marketing background keen to highlight the commercial potential within a school. Seven amazing children used their creativity, enthusiasm and talent to put together a truly special publication. The children wrote and researched most of the content, and also phoned all of the advertisers raising around £1000 in the process. Follow us on Instagram - @primarytimesse
The Very Hungry Caterpillar 50th Anniversary
Over 50 Cub Scouts came together recently for a special event to launch the new edition of their Environmental Conservation Activity badge.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was first published by the World Publishing Company on 3 June 1969, which makes this year the 50th anniversary. The book has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, which is the equivalent of a copy every 15 seconds since its publication. It has been translated into over 65 languages including Dutch, French, German, Chinese, Italian, Swedish and Russian. If you put every copy sold back to back, they would stretch all the way around the moon. The book’s writer and illustrator, Eric Carle, has created more than seventy books, of which more than 151 million copies have sold worldwide. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day is celebrated on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May in the UK. Within the story, the caterpillar eats through 26 different foods including pears, strawberries, a slice of Swiss cheese, a lollipop and a cupcake. Carle was inspired by a hole-punch, reminding him of a book worm. Carle’s famous technique of different shaped pages with holes that represents the caterpillars food trail, was inspired from books that he read as a child. To find out more about Eric Carle and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, visit www.eric-carle.com.
Now sponsored by The Salvation Army’s Recycle with Michael initiative - which works with children to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill - the badge actively encourages Cub Scouts to get involved in environmental conservation in their daily lives. At the badge’s launch event, cubs from 1st Shipley Scouts joined others from across the country and worked alongside professional artists, Lloyd Warbey from Disney’s Art Attack and Suzanne Lynas, to create a gigantic replica of their newly designed badge utilising only recycled materials. The giant piece of art spanned nearly 2,500 sq ft, took over 5 hours to complete, and was made using clothes, shoes, and bedding which was generously donated by the attending Cubs and representatives from Scout Head Quarters. The clothes were then shipped off to the Salvation Army’s sorting office where they will either be recycled or distributed to the charity’s numerous shops across the UK ready for ‘second chance’ purchase.

International Bat Night
International Bat Night is a popular annual event to draw public awareness to threatened bat populations across the world. Bat Night takes place in more than 30 countries on the last full weekend of August. This year, International Bat Night is on 24 and 25 August. Bats are mammals, and in fact they are the only mammals that can fly. Like other mammals, they have hair or fur on their bodies and are warm-blooded. In the UK, there are 17 different types of bats. Many people think bats are blind, but in fact they can see almost as well as humans. However, at night, their ears are more important than their eyes - they use a special sonar system called ‘echolocation,’ meaning they find things using echoes. Why not see and hear bats in their natural environment by taking part in a range of events organised by local bat groups, wildlife trusts, countryside rangers and other organisations across the country? In your local area, be sure to find a bat walk over the holidays. They often take place at dusk. Bat walk leaders have equipment specialised to hear the bat’s echoes and cries, called a bat detector.
Littlehampton, Fun for All the Family

This year, a quarter of Tilgate Nature Centre was redeveloped into a new Americas-themed zone, the largest project to date.Visitors can see some of the amazing creatures from North and South America here including the colourful flock of macaws, the world’s largest rodent, the capybara, and strange looking axolotls. School’s Out for Summer...
The Essential Guide to Pond Dipping
Ponds have a huge variety of amazing little creatures just waiting to be discovered. Get your nets and magnifying glasses at the ready and go pond dipping this summer, either in your garden, at your local park or in a local Woodland Trust nature reserve. First on the essential list is getting your equipment – a net, a lightcoloured shallow tray or plastic container to inspect your findings in, plastic spoons, a magnifying glass, ID sheets and notebook to record your findings and a phone or camera. Follow this handy guide to ensure your pond dipping success. First, scoop some pond water into your container so the little creatures will be happy swimming around in it. Lie on your tummy or kneel by the side of the pond and sweep your net slowly through the water – a figure of eight shape works best. Then take your net out and carefully turn it inside out so the creatures you’ve caught drop into the container. You can then use your spoon to scoop them up and get a closer look. But don’t touch them as you might hurt them. Check out the Woodland Trust’s pond dipping guide online for pictures to help you identify your finds. Show off your findings to The Woodland Trust on social media using #NatureDetectives. And if you want more ideas like this through the post, why not become a Woodland Trust Nature Detective? Find out more at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/ naturedetectives.

Mini Hoteliers at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort Hotels are fascinating places, especially for young inquisitive minds. Offering a behind-thescenes insight into the workings of hotel life,Anantara Layan Phuket Resort in Thailand has launched an immersive Junior Hotelier programme for children aged between 8 and 12. The imaginative programme follows in the footsteps of the resort team as they make the preparations for new guests arriving at the luxurious Layan Residences by Anantara, located on the hillside above the resort. The experience starts with a short tour of one of the 15 Layan Residences, while shadowing a villa butler, learning the traditional Thai greeting for new guests and hearing their fun facts and anecdotes of hotel life. The young guests will be shown how to make the perfect bed, before getting creative with animal towel art. Like origami but with towels, they will learn the skill of creating jungle animals, including elephants and monkeys, which will be left on the bed for the new guests. In the villa kitchen, budding cooks will help the chef prepare for the meal that evening. From mixing and kneading dough for pastries, to using ingredients such as rice noodles, coconut oil and prawns to make a traditional Pad Thai. The trainee chefs will have a chance to taste their dishes while learning about the ingredients they are using. No hotel is complete without a signature cocktail and following their cooking class the junior hoteliers will also get busy making a mocktail at the open air bar by the infinity pool. Combining different fruits such as pineapple, mango and papaya, the mini mixologists will work together with the bartender to create their own fruit concoction or mock-jito. The experience will end by following in the footsteps of the villa butler as they demonstrate the art of a relaxing turndown service, leaving slippers out and a treat on the pillow. The Junior Hotelier programme costs £60 per child and lasts two to three hours, for children aged 8 to 12.A stay at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort starts from £350 per night in a pool villa including tax and breakfast.A two bedroom Layan Residence starts from £1,689 per night with tax, breakfast, airport transfer, non-alcoholic minibar and fast track immigration. Timeless Tanzania Safari
Acacia Africa’s seven day Timeless Tanzania is part of the operator’s Short Safaris and Treks collection, the tour visiting both the Serengeti and the Olduvai Gorge. Tanzania’s Northern Circuit parks and reserves are home to some of East Africa’s highest concentrations of wildlife, including the Big Five, but also many other equally interesting species of game and fascinating birdlife. The tour takes you on safari not only to see the animals in their natural habitats, but to enjoy the magnificent landscapes and memorable sunrises and sunsets. The journey commences with a scheduled shuttle service from Nairobi to Tanzania’s safari town, Arusha. Highlights of the trip include a visit to Lake Manyara National Park. Make your way out of the busy town through coffee plantations before reaching the open plains. Upon reaching Lake Manyara you will have your first game drive looking for some of the amazing wild animals that are native to the region. Leaving Lake Manyara behind, you will travel through to the town of Karatu and on into the highlands. The road hugs the rim of the Ngorongo crater before dropping down towards the Serengeti plains. After spending the afternoon game driving, guests will have a relaxing evening at their comfortable lodge. After a restful night, the following day starts early for a morning game drive as this is the best time to see the animals. After lunch the safari leaves the park and heads back towards the Ngorongoro Crater and the lodge perched on the rim. From Manyara, the trip drops down the escarpment to the floor of the Great Rift Valley and heads onto the hidden gem, Tarangire National Park.
