Learn to Swim at Everyone Active
Learning to swim is a vital life skill which every child should experience. Swimming lessons teach children independence and give a sense of accomplishment as the child feels themselves improving. Swimming offers a whole-body workout like no other, helping children to keep active whilst having fun. Learning to swim also gives children the ability to get themselves out of potentially dangerous situations, enabling them to fully enjoy trips to the seaside and beach holidays. Once your children are able to swim confidently and competently, the door opens up to a huge range of other activities, like kayaking, canoeing and water polo. These provide further opportunities for keeping active, meeting friends and developing new skills. Everyone Active’s award-winning learn to swim programme offers lessons for all ages of swimmers, with child classes starting at 4 months right through to adult classes and are available at over 120 sites. All swimming teachers are Swim England level 2 (or equivalent) qualified. All stages are progressive and continually assessed, initially developing water confidence and then teaching children to swim. As they improve, the distance is increased and all strokes are introduced. Children also have the opportunity to develop water safety skills and other aquatic disciplines such as rookie lifeguard, synchronised swimming, diving and water polo. Visit www.everyoneactive.com for more information.

Last Christmas, 54 schools, nurseries, colleges and groups across Sussex and South East Hampshire took part in a Reindeer Fun challenge, raising vital funds for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Why don’t you get involved in 2019? This year the Hospice are inviting even more people to have some Reindeer Fun. Whether you want to Run, Cycle, Row, Ramble, or come up with your own challenge, Chestnut Tree House will provide everything you need for your Reindeer Fun event including free reindeer antlers and red noses for everyone taking part, posters, helpful hints and sponsorship forms. The sponsorship money will help Chestnut Tree House care for around 300 children and young people with lifeshortening conditions across East Sussex, West Sussex and South East Hampshire. It costs Chestnut Tree House over £4 million each year to provide all its specialist care services and the charity receives less than 6% of its care costs from central government funding. £5 pays for one minute of all Chestnut Tree House care services, £35 enables a child to experience a magical hour in Chestnut Tree House’s multi-sensory room with a specially-trained member of staff and £280 allows their Community Team to visit a child at home at the weekend or during the night, often necessary when a child is very poorly. For more information on Reindeer Fun and how to get involved, please visit www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk.

At the end of last term, over 2,000 pupils from 52 primary schools across Sussex and Surrey were treated to a very special educational day out at Connect with the Countryside at the South of England Showground. The free event saw Year 5 and 6 pupils get hands-on with a whole host of activities, challenges and displays focused around livestock, horticulture, food, wildlife and recreation. Split into various zones at the showground, 2019’s programme focussed more than ever on the importance of farming and the countryside and how our food is produced. In the livestock zone pupils were able to meet a range of farm animals from Sussex beef bulls, baby chicks and sheep to llamas, donkeys and ferrets - learning how the animals are bred and utilised for everything from providing the food on our plates to maintaining crop levels. Across the showground, in the horticulture and food zone, pupils learnt about healthy food, focusing on how products they consume are made. It was hands-on a plenty with children making fresh fruit smoothies by cycling on a special smoothie bike, kneading dough to make bread, helping make cheese from scratch and even churning butter. For more information about Connect with the Countryside, please visit www.seas.org.uk or email education@seas.org.uk.

The First Chichester Walking Weekend
September sees the launch of the first ever Chichester Walking Weekend, a collaboration between Visit Chichester and The Ramblers Association. Covering the magnificence of the South Downs National Park, the stunning stretches of coastline, the natural beauty of Chichester Harbour and, of course, the historic Roman City of Chichester itself, the weekend will showcase the wealth of attractions this wonderful part of Sussex has to offer. The weekend will offer walkers the chance to take in the stunning scenery while being led by a knowledgeable guide. Some trails will lead walkers over the picturesque Downs, while other routes will amble around the Manhood Peninsular, exploring the local history of Selsey and Sidlesham. City routes will guide walkers through Chichester’s 2,000 year history, discovering lesser-known nooks and crannies and exploring the City’s celebrated landmarks too. Further walks explore the areas around the quaint market towns of Midhurst and Petworth, and the village of Amberley. The Weald & Downland Living Museum are also offering a 1-mile guided walk of their unique museum. Why not learn more about the resident wildlife on the shore on a Marine Life Walk with Selsey’s Mulberry Divers? For further information, visit www.visitchichester.org.

Choosing your New School Starting to look at secondary schools? We give you the lowdown on what to do. Applying for secondary school is one of the most important decisions you are going to make because it’s likely to have a huge impact on your child’s future, way beyond the school gates. There’s some essential ‘homework’ to be done before you make that all important choice and you must make sure you know the deadlines for applying via your local authority. For some, it won’t be an issue, as catchment area rules determine your first or other choices, decided by postcode or feeder school. However, for those of you who can choose, the task can seem a daunting one. To help you through the process, follow our tips for some forward planning and get the most out of a school open day.
A Pull Out and Keep Feature
the head teacher talks, take a tour around the school and try talk to some of the current students to find out what they enjoy about it. A school’s building may influence how you feel about it, also the extracurricular activities on offer, the teaching style and general environment. Open mornings are also incredibly helpful as you can see what the school is like during a normal day when students are in lessons. You will hopefully be able to glance into some of the classrooms to see what a typical lesson looks like. You may find things are very different from what you saw at the opening evening. Visiting schools will help to narrow down the list even more and judge which one is right for your child. It may also help to make a pros and cons list of each school you visit so you can remember what you and your child liked and disliked. You may even want to visit the school in both Year 5 and Year 6.
Head to the Open Day
This is one of the most important steps in deciding which secondary school to pick and is designed to help you to gain an insight into what the school is actually like. You can find out the details of open days, open mornings and/or evenings for the schools on your shortlist either from the many included in our tables in this magazine or from the school websites. Make sure you check dates and times, as they can change. If you visit too many schools it may become confusing and sometimes too much choice isn’t helpful. So stick to your shortlist and only visit these ones. Visiting schools with your child can help you to see if they would feel comfortable there and also allows you the opportunity to find out things that weren’t apparent from your earlier research. A school may appear to tick all the boxes when you research it for your shortlist, but when you visit you may realise it’s not the right school for your child. You may be tempted to look at school rankings and Ofsted reports. These can be useful to give more information about exam results and the teaching quality of the school. However, do remember that some schools may be better for different subjects and being lower in the ranking does not mean the school is necessarily worse. Rankings are also vulnerable to change and depend on many factors. Recommendations and what family and friends have to say about their experiences with certain schools can be very useful in your decision-making. You may be more drawn to a school if you know someone who has first-hand experience with it and who can help you with some of your questions. 2 Sept - 13 Oct ‘19

Mary’s Meals Mary’s Meals is asking you to bring hope to a hungry child on World Porridge Day, Thursday 10 October. Children all over the world are preparing for the new term, including more than 1.2 million learners who receive a daily meal from Mary’s Meals. The charity works with some of the world’s poorest communities to set up school feeding programmes that encourage children to attend class, learn, and work towards a better future. World Porridge Day celebrates the huge difference that a daily mug of porridge from Mary’s Meals makes in the lives of chronically hungry children. This October, schools across the UK will be joining in with the Porridge Smiles fundraising campaign to send a real message of hope to children living in poverty. Mary’s Meals is inviting you to host a porridge party fundraiser at school, any time in October. It’s a great way to bring staff, pupils and parents together, take a photo of yourself enjoying a bowl of porridge and share it on social media using #PorridgeSmiles. To request your free Porridge Smiles party pack – which includes tips for setting up your party and a poster to publicise your event – visit www.worldporridgeday.com and complete the online form. You’ll also be able to read a selection of Perfect Porridge recipes from celebrities and top chefs too. Your school’s fundraising will make a huge difference to children receiving Mary’s Meals.

Our Lady of Sion
Our Lady of Sion Junior School is the perfect place for a child to start their education journey. The school passionately believes that a happy environment is one in which children thrive. Thanks to the autonomy afforded as an independent school, the curriculum has been created to focus on making learning relevant, engaging and meaningful. With the nearby seaside landscape opening up the learning environment, Sion is an accredited Beach School and timetabled sessions are eagerly anticipated by both pupils and staff. With regular trips and a ‘high challenge, low threat’ approach, the children have gained confidence, shown resilience and learned to work collaboratively. This approach to learning is reflected throughout the curriculum and in the introduction of various initiatives. With a member of staff being a gold status Parliament Teacher Ambassador, the Junior School has become involved in UK Parliament Week where pupils learn about democracy and the workings of Parliament. There is also active engagement as an Eco School – the pupils’ Eco Committee set out an ambitious action plan and now have their sights set on their Green Flag. As befitting a school with a motto of ‘Consideration Always’, Sion has also been very involved in an intergenerational project, working with the neighbouring care home and a local hospice. Children from Nursery to Year 6 have paid regular visits, sharing books, art projects, creative writing and even the Nursery Sports’ Day! Above all, Sion aims to instil a love of learning, and to create childhood memories along the way.

Conclusion
Connecting mathematics to the real world and grounding it in everyday experience gives it value and purpose. Spotting these opportunities to embed learning goes far in the way of preventing and even overcoming the anxiety that too often occurs with the mention of maths.

Cooking of any sort requires counting, weighing and measuring. Older children can explore ratio and proportion by doubling or halving mixtures or to convert between different units of measure, whether metric or imperial. Sharing pizza or cake is a way to explore anything from simple fractions such as halves and quarters to the more complex ideas of equivalence and comparison.

Simply reading the price of an item and comparing it with the price of another provides a real world context for exploring greater and less. Older children can estimate the total price of the shopping using rounding and estimating. Unfortunately maths is one of those subjects that can frighten children, a phenomenon recently described as ‘Maths Anxiety’ by University of Cambridge researchers. Exposing children to real life maths can help them see both the value of learning to ‘do’ maths and also that it can be something to be enjoyed. Here are some examples.

You can expect historical and magical discoveries, laughter and thrills for all the family. To celebrate the anniversary, the park has recently opened its second hotel, La Cité Suspendue, a village of wooden cabins on stilts spread across the forest by the park’s gate, as well as two
new attractions - Attention Menhir!, a fully immersive 4D cinema complete with smells, water, wind and more and L’Aventure Asterix, an interactive circuit taking visitors through the comic book’s creative process as well as a drawing workshop. Interestingly, theatre trained individuals are identified as having transferable skills such as good interviewing technique, self-discipline and the ability to work as a team, which is incredibly important for older students in the job market. Principal of Razzamataz Bognor Regis, Andrea, explained to Primary Times, “We have lots of students who have gone on to make performing arts their careers, but equally, we have many that have used the life skills they have learnt at Razzamataz to find the confidence to pursue a wide variety of jobs. Our role is to empower young people to have a positive mind set and to build resilience.” Principal of Razzamataz Horsham, Caroline added, “Our schools are inclusive and safe environments where students can start to explore what their futures look like. With determination, resilience and hard work, we teach students that if they can dream it, they can achieve it.” The September intake is open now, so register to secure your place on the free open day. Alternatively, book your free taster session at Razzamataz Horsham by contacting Caroline at horsham@razzamataz.co.uk or call 07523 338 099. The Drama School with a Heart
Dramatis is a drama school on a mission to bring the benefits of drama to the West Sussex community. Whilst some drama schools are known for cultivating a competitive environment and pushing people to their limits to get the best out of them, Dramatis focuses on nurturing individual personalities and skills. Viewing each student as part of an extended family, Dramatis believes that building people up and not breaking them down is the key to success, both on and off the stage. Having run drama classes and courses in Bognor Regis for over a year, Dramatis will launch in Chichester in October. Register your child for a free workshop at the open day on Saturday 12 October at Community Hall, Donegall Avenue, Roussillion Park, Chichester. For more information, see www.dramatis.co.uk, or call 07540 792 849. Do go along and join the Dramatis family, you’ll have a great time.

Founder Denise Hutton-Gosney and investor Duncan Bannatyne from BBC’s Dragon’s Den have expanded the theatre school franchise nationwide. Every year, Razzamataz decides on a new theme to best help its students and this academic year, each school across the UK will be focusing on ‘What will you become?’
