July Bumper Summer Edition • Issue 113 • 3 July - 3 September 2017

Hayley and Miriam have spent the last few weeks finding all the hundreds of listings that we have published. We’re sorry if we couldn’t publish everything we are sent but the summer magazine is our biggest of the year and with so much going on we simply run out of space. As many of you will know, we publish comprehensive Open Day tables in the September magazine in our Choosing your New School feature. These are aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 pupils but are handy for everyone to think about. Do look out for that magazine which will be published on 4 September.

Have a fantastic summer

Britain’s Classroom Heroes

Fairytale Theatre in Chichester

This August, meet Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel and Rapunzel as they follow their destinies alongside other strange folk such as mythical creatures, proud princesses, wicked witches and bold princes. The renowned Chichester Festival Youth Theatre returns to the magnificent landscape of Cass Sculpture Foundation to perform Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales for Young and Old. This patchwork of bewitching and eerie tales is woven by an ensemble of quirky storytellers and musicians. Follow them through the enchanted pathways and darker twists and turns of the beautiful Cass landscape – if you dare… Phillip Pullman’s masterful retelling of these classic stories, adapted by Philip Wilson, will appeal to adults as much as children, preserving their macabre simplicity and legendary fascination. Directed by Dale Rooks, Chichester Festival Youth Theatre won the UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People for their production of Running Wild at Cass Sculpture Foundation in 2015. Grimm Tales runs from 4 – 19 August and is suitable for ages 8+. A free park and ride service will be provided from Chichester College to the venue.Visit cft.org.uk/familyfriendly to book tickets and find out more about family friendly events at CFT.

Wicked Young Writer Awards

The acclaimed 2017 Wicked Young Writer Awards have announced the names of the finalists in the running for the annual creative writing prizes. Now in its 7th year, the Awards encourage young people aged 5-25 years to use writing as a way of expressing themselves, producing unique and original pieces of prose and poetry. Nearly 30,000 young people have entered the Awards since they began in 2009, with this year seeing the fastest growing level of entries to date. Over 600 primary and secondary schools and colleges entered this year’s competition from all over the UK, with a particularly impressive rise in entries for the 8-10 year old category. Our picture shows two of the judges, Cressida Cowell and Ed Balls. Finalists include two entries from Kingslea Primary School in Horsham. They are from Sophie Dickinson for her entry “The Story of Alpha” and Stanley Morris for his entry “Black” in the 8-10 year old category.

3 July - 3 September 17

As part of Thank a Teacher Day 2017, the Pearson Teaching Awards announced 56 Silver Winners in UK schools. The awards recognise the significant impact of inspirational teachers on the lives of their young pupils. West Sussex teacher Ms Sue Jay was one of three Silver Winners in the Excellence in Special Needs Education category. Sue Jay has been teaching children and young adults with severe or profound learning difficulties and complex needs for 37 years. Her impact on pupils at Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School, Horsham, has been life changing as she promotes performing arts for her special needs students. Many pupils join QEII having been failed by previous school settings. With low self-esteem and confidence they struggle to articulate their feelings and choices. Sue’s creative approach gives them the confidence to access learning in the classroom through to performing in front of large theatre audiences. She has succeeded in getting her special needs students into mainstream performance settings, including the first Shakespeare Schools Festival in which they were one of three schools nationally invited to perform at the Lyric Theatre in the West End. All Silver Winners are invited to the annual Awards Ceremony in London on 22 October, broadcast by the BBC. There, they will find out which of them has won one of just 11 Gold Plato Awards, the UK’s “Oscars for Teachers”. Find out more about the award categories and those shortlisted online at www.teachingawards.com.

Squire’s Celebrates Budding Young Artists Everything’s coming up roses for Brooke Watts, age 9 from Thakeham First School, and Grace Gambling, age 11 from Rydon Community College, as they have both won Squire’s Garden Centre’s “Draw A Rose” competition. Junior school children were invited to draw or paint a rose to celebrate St. George’s Day on 23 April. The competition encouraged children to think about the rose - our national flower and a quintessentially English symbol – and be inspired not only to create art but also to get closer to nature at home and at school. With the winning artists each receiving rose plants, Squire’s hoped to encourage a new generation of budding young gardeners. Lucky Brooke and Grace both won a rose plant for their school and also one for their garden at home from Squire’s in Washington. To discover your nearest centre or find out more about Squire’s involvement with schools and the local community, visit www. squiresgardencentres.co.uk.

DuckTales

The new animated comedy adventure DuckTales will have a special sneak peak premiere on Disney Channel and Disney XD titled ‘Woo-hoo!’ this autumn. The brand new series is set to launch in the UK in early 2018 on the Disney Channel and DisneyLife. DuckTales will reach far and wide in 34 languages in 162 countries on Disney Channels and Disney XD worldwide. Featuring a distinct animation style inspired by the classic Carl Barks’ comic designs, DuckTales chronicles the high-flying adventures of Duckburg’s most famous trillionaire Scrooge McDuck, his mischiefmaking triplet grandnephews – Huey, Dewey and Louie, temperamental nephew Donald Duck and the trusted McDuck Manor team. The voice cast includes David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck.

Sleep Under the Stars Join the RSPB’s annual Big Wild Sleepout this July, and spend a night under the stars on your favourite RSPB reserve or explore nature in your own garden. The RSPB’s Big Wild Sleepout returns for a fifth year, and between 28 and 30 July, thousands of children and their families will be pitching tents in gardens and RSPB reserves across the UK, hoping to discover what night time creatures are living on their doorstep. At RSPB Pulborough Brooks in West Sussex, you can uncover moths and bats and enjoy unrivalled dark night skies at this stunning South Downs location. The reserve is within one of only 11 Dark Skies Reserves in the world, offering campers the chance to enjoy exceptionally clear night skies at night and enjoy activities in beautiful surroundings during the day. Camping is not usually allowed at RSPB Pagham Harbour nature reserve in order to protect the important wildlife there. However, the Big Wild Sleepout is your chance to sleep out on the reserve and experience it at night-time. As well as taking in the sights and sounds of the reserve after dark, they will be getting crafty, setting up mammal and moth traps, hunting for bugs and going bat detecting. Booking for special reserve sleepouts is open now.Visit www.rspb.org. uk/sleepout to find out which other reserves near you taking part. Campers can now get even closer to nature by taking the first step towards their Wild Challenge, the RSPB’s new free online award scheme, which encourages families to go out and get closer to the natural world. By completing activities ranging from minibeast safaris and habitat exploring, to making a compost heap and planting for wildlife, participants can log their achievements on the RSPB Wild Challenge website and collect bronze, silver and gold awards. For those who prefer to stay closer to home, visit www.rspb.org. uk/sleepout to find fun ideas, activities and tips to help you have a wild night out. Big Wild Sleepout is free to take part in at home and registration is now open.

Taking place each day from 10am to 6pm, the Loxwood Joust’s unrivalled programme of mediaeval revelry guarantees a day out like no other. A fast-paced, all action jousting tournament will amaze and astound whilst daring displays of weaponry, archery and cannon fire will enthral as fully armoured knights prepare to meet in a thunderous battle.

School’s Out for Summer!

International Bat Night International Bat Night is a popular annual event to draw public awareness to threatened bat populations across the world. Bat Night has taken place every year since 1997 in more than 30 countries on the last full weekend of August. This year, the International Bat Night is on 26 and 27 August. Bats are mammals, in fact they are the only mammals that can fly. Like other mammals, including ourselves and many of our pets, they have hair or fur on their bodies and are warm-blooded. In the UK, there are 17 different types of bats. Many people think bats are blind, but in fact they can see almost as well as humans. However, at night, their ears are more important than their eyes - they use a special sonar system called ‘echolocation,’ meaning they find things using echoes. Why not see and hear bats in their natural environment by taking part in a range of events organised by local bat groups, wildlife trusts, countryside rangers and other organisations across the country? In your local area, be sure to find a bat walk over the holidays. They often take place at dusk. Bat walk leaders have equipment specialised to hear the bat’s echoes and cries, called a bat detector.

Journey to the Stars This summer, an exciting range of star shows are on offer at the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester. Using their magnificent star projector, which displays over 4,500 pinpoint stars on the dome above your head, their shows ‘Summer Skies, Shooting Stars’ and ‘Summertime Stars, Moon and Planets’, will showcase the wonders of the night sky at this time of the year and are suitable for would-be stargazers aged 7 and upwards.

When you arrive at Arundel Wetland Centre you’ll receive your free Wildlife Ranger log book packed with everything you need for a day of exciting discoveries. Children will be encouraged to record their findings and experiences in their log books, like a real life ranger, as a permanent reminder of their wild day out. Will you take up the challenge and become a Wildlife Ranger this summer? Dusty Wildlife Rangers activities run from Saturday 22 July until Sunday 3 September at WWT Wetland Centres. You can discover a whole new world at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre. Get close to amazing wildlife, take exciting boat safaris through water meadows and hand feed exotic birds. On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August, Bush Craft for Kids workshops at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre will introduce kids to foraging and bush cooking. Perfect for ages 9+, call 01903 881 530 to book. Go to www.wwt.org. uk/wetland-centres/arundel for more information.

The Essential Guide to Pond Dipping Ponds have a huge variety of amazing little creatures just waiting to be discovered. Get your nets and magnifying glasses at the ready and go pond dipping this summer, either in your garden, at your local park or in a local Woodland Trust nature reserve. First on the essential list is getting your equipment – a net, a lightcoloured shallow tray or plastic container to inspect your findings in, plastic spoons, a magnifying glass, ID sheets and notebook to record your findings and a phone or camera.

The highlight of the summer season will be a series of special fulldome shows featuring stunning fulldome still views and immersive video sequences that completely surround the audience with breath taking moving colour imagery. The Planetarium will be repeating their popular shows ‘One Small Step for Major Tim, A Giant Leap Towards Mars’ about the future of human spaceflight and ‘Hubble’s View of the Universe’, featuring the Hubble Space Telescope’s greatest discoveries, including many of its most beautiful and scientifically important pictures. Completely new this summer, they will be showing ‘Distant Worlds - Alien Life?’ - a stunning feature-length fulldome show about the conditions required for life, both in our Solar System and on some of the newly-discovered exoplanets orbiting other stars. For details of all upcoming shows and a map showing you how to get there, visit the Planetarium’s website at www.southdowns.org.uk. It is always advisable to book tickets in advance, as some shows sell out quickly. Simply call 01243 774 400 or 07818 297 292 to reserve tickets.

Dusty’s Wildlife Rangers at Arundel Wetland Centre Children of all ages can join Dusty Duck, pick up their very own log book and become real-life wildlife rangers at WWT Wetland Centres this summer holiday. Go on a wetland boat safari, follow a geocaching trail, be a mini-beast detective, learn Junior Warden skills and weave with willow. 20

Follow this handy guide to ensure your pond dipping success. First, scoop some pond water into your container so the little creatures will be happy swimming around in it. Lie on your tummy or kneel by the side of the pond and sweep your net slowly through the water – a figure of eight shape works best. Then take your net out and carefully turn it inside out so the creatures you’ve caught drop into the container. You can then use your spoon to scoop them up and get a closer look. But don’t touch them as you might hurt them. Check out the Woodland Trust’s pond dipping guide online for pictures to help you identify your finds. Show off your findings to The Woodland Trust on social media using #NatureDetectives. And if you want more ideas like this through the post, why not become a Woodland Trust Nature Detective? There is a wealth of evidence that shows learning a musical instrument is beneficial for children, not just in building their musical skills but also aiding their cognitive, emotional and social development. Recent research from Dawn Rose from the University of Hertfordshire compared children who took part in regular group school music lessons to children who pursued individual music lessons for the first time that year.

How Music Benefits Children

The results showed that children who had started individual music lessons developed a better awareness of their ‘aim’ and ‘force’ in relation to their own motor skills as well as improving their ‘fluid intelligence’ – which is the ability to solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns. This suggests that musical instrument learning encourages the development of a physical sense of self in relation to the how we use objects in the world around us, as well as developing a specific kind of intelligence that is used in problem solving. Research also shows how musical learning can help children to apply themselves, as well as supporting the processes involved in teamwork and appreciation of working towards shared goals. Music can have a big role to play when it comes to children’s learning. Not necessarily just in terms of intelligence, but also in terms of their physical development and social wellbeing.

Win Tickets to the Loxwood Joust

The Loxwood Joust mediaeval festival is renowned for its authenticity as it explores the full richness of our country’s heritage with an unrivalled programme of mediaeval mayhem. From the first moment you see the sign – ‘You are now entering the 15th Century. Laws of the year 1455 now apply. You have been warned’ - you are transported back in time. As with most things mediaeval, crime and punishment was a grim affair and murderers were given the same trials as apple thieves, with both usually meeting the same grizzly end. With the threat of being tortured on the rack, this certainly was a gruesome time. The Joust is being held on 5-6 and 12-13 August at The Loxwood Meadow, West Sussex RH14 0AL For more details contact loxwoodjoust.co.uk Primary Times has a family ticket (two adults and two children) to give away to one lucky leader. To be in with a chance of winning, please tell us which one of the following was used as a mediaeval instrument of torture - a lance, a rack or a saucepan. For entry details see the bottom of this page. Please note that the closing date for this competition is Friday 21 July

Win a Copy of AniMalcolm by David Baddiel

AniMalcolm is a laugh-out-loud adventure for every child who ever wondered what it might be like to be a bit of an animal. Malcolm doesn’t like animals, which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. What the house is not full of is stuff Malcolm likes, such as the laptop he wanted for his birthday. The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year 6 school trip but the catch is, it’s a trip to a farm. Over the next days, Malcolm changes. With the help of a magic goat, Malcolm is transformed into a whole series of animals. He thinks differently, speaks differently and eats differently. But will he end up the same as he was before? Sometimes the hardest thing to become is yourself. We have ten signed copies of this hilarious new book for lucky Primary Times readers to win. For your chance to be a winner, tell us what magical animal helps Malcolm transform. For entry details see below.
