The Drama School with a Heart Dramatis have successfully run drama classes and courses for adults and children in Bognor Regis for nearly two years, and February will see Dramatis Community Drama School expand into Chichester. The ‘drama school with a heart’, which helps bring the benefits of drama to the West Sussex community, is run by Suzy Duxbury, an ATCL Trinity and LAMDA qualified teacher. Whilst some drama schools are known for cultivating a competitive environment and pushing people to their limits to get the best out of them, Dramatis focuses on nurturing individual personalities and skills. Dramatis believes that building people up, not breaking them down, is the key to success (both on and off the stage). The Chichester programme will run at the Chichester Community Development Trust’s Community Hall in Roussillon Park and will incorporate an evening drama course for adults (on Mondays) and two drama classes for children (on Wednesdays). For more information, see www.dramatis.co.uk. To help demonstrate what the Youth Drama Classes are all about, on Saturday 15 February, Dramatis are running two free workshops. ‘Magic and Mayhem’ for 5-6 year olds will run from 10.15am to 11.15am and ‘Myths and Legends’ for 7-9 year olds will run from 11.45am to 12.45pm.
Join the Nest Box Challenge
Information collected by British Trust for Ornithology volunteer nest recorders each year provides an insight into how some of our resident and migratory birds fared during the breeding season. The big winners in 2019 were the tits – blue, great and long tailed tits. Nest Box Challenge gives you the opportunity to help the BTO learn more about nesting birds in the UK. Anyone can take part all you need to do is register the nest boxes or nests in your garden or local area and record what’s inside at regular intervals during the breeding season. By asking anyone with a box/nest in their garden to monitor it for Nest Box Challenge, BTO can build up an incredibly detailed picture of the breeding success of garden nesting birds across the UK. The information collected can be used to understand more about why some species are increasing while others are declining and to help the BTO find out whether warmer weather and the provision of food can make a difference to the number of chicks that birds are able to raise. In order to take part, you simply need to register and answer a few questions about the garden or green space in which your box/nest is sited and a bit about the box/nest itself. You will then be able to record details of any birds you see using the box/nest and even what you find when you look inside the nest. Contact www.bto.org for more information. Photo credit: Liz Cutting

This open day is a great opportunity to try out the chorister experience, look behind the scenes at the Cathedral, sing with the choir at a short service, and even play the organ! It will be an exciting and informative afternoon for everyone. Christ’s Hospital Invites Applications for September 2021
If you want a school with the wow factor in abundance, look no further than Christ’s Hospital. The school has been rated excellent in every aspect by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate. What is so special about Christ’s Hospital is the extent of the resources on offer. There are teachers available 24/7, a broad range of activities including societies like the medics group to help with university applications as well as extensive and impressive sports facilities. When pupils start at Christ’s Hospital they are encouraged to join in and to have a go, to discover new interests and talents, to explore a wide range of subjects and topics, to make use of the wonderful facilities on site and to ensure they get the most out of their time at the school. Christ’s Hospital is unashamedly academic, with 98% of pupils moving on each year to the leading universities in this country and abroad. Pupils’ fees are assessed according to family income. It is a child’s ability and potential to benefit from a Christ’s Hospital education that determines their selection. This results in a social and cultural diversity that enriches the school community and offers pupils unique opportunities as the school prepares them to take their place in the modern world. To find out more you can explore Christ’s Hospital’s website at www. christs-hospital.org.uk. Uncover the secrets of their school, see their latest exam results, meet pupils, learn about their historic uniform and the fascinating history which dates back to King Edward VI and Tudor England.
Chichester Pupils Inspired by Ugandan Young Rights Activists
10-year-old Stanley Wilkes visited Uganda at the end of last year on behalf of Jessie Younghusband Primary School student council. He spent time with some inspirational ‘Child Rights Clubs’ who are changing their communities in the slums surrounding Jinja. Now he is back in Chichester, exploring with his friends how they can put what he’s learnt into practice. Stanley is a member of the student council at Jessie Younghusband Primary School in Chichester and his Dad works for Children on the Edge, a Chichester based NGO that supports some of the most marginalised children around the world. They travelled to Uganda at the end of October to find out exactly how Ugandan Child Rights Clubs have made such a difference and what he could learn to inspire his own Student Council at home in Chichester.
Transforming the Outdoors into a Sensory Space for Students
Slindon College is using money raised from its festive fundraiser to create an outdoor classroom and sanctuary for its pupils. The Sensory Garden Project will offer pupils the therapeutic benefits of nature and will be another transformative educational space. Funds for the project were raised at the College’s successful ‘Christmas by Candlelight’ concert, which featured star vocalist Rachael Hawnt (a finalist in the BBC’s ‘All Together Now’), performing live on the College’s own grand piano. Slindon College hopes the Sensory Garden will be enriching and educational as well as providing a place of calm. Pupils will play an active role in the creation of the garden, which will teach life skills, like patience and nurturing, whilst they wait for their seeds to flower and bloom. Furthermore, the project will form part of a wider commitment to the environment, creating a habitat for the wildlife that flock the College’s impressive grounds. Sensory gardens can be a stimulating learning space, helping to ease anxiety, attention disorders and sensory processing issues as well as having a benefit on physical health, mood, stress levels and cognition. It can be a place to learn any subject, particularly in summer, providing an alternative to the classroom.

Stanley went along to a Loco Child Rights Club meeting, asking questions on behalf of the student council and hearing members explain about how they’ve succeeded in getting children into school, stopping abuse, and cleaning up the community. He also attended a Child Rights Club workshop in Wandago, where the club presented to over 100 children from the local primary school, teaching them all about their rights and responsibilities. He also conducted a series of one-on-one interviews with children from both areas about what makes them feel safe in their communities. Stanley has recently presented his findings at a full school assembly, but the plans are just getting going. Other local schools have already expressed an interest in taking Jessie Younghusband’s lead and implementing some of the ideas from Uganda, so the achievements of the Jinja Child Rights Clubs are set to have international influence.

The Junior School at Our Lady of Sion is a welcoming, vibrant place for children from Nursery to Year 6. Children can start at the age of 3 and the Nursery is open 52 weeks a year from 7.30am to 6pm. Childhood memories are precious and, freed from the constraints of SATS, the curriculum is one which is designed to make learning engaging, relevant and meaningful. A happy child is one who will learn the most. Sion is an accredited Beach School and all the children have regular outdoor sessions which can cover anything from learning about the tides to inspiration for creative writing. The pupils gain an early engagement in democracy through participation in UK Parliament Week. Students also benefit from an intergenerational project with the neighbouring care home and the school’s engagement with Eco Schools. Our Lady of Sion is a very special place, as children, parents and staff regularly agree. A relatively small school in the heart of Worthing, the school prides itself on the education experience it gives to each and every child. As the children progress through the school, they are encouraged and supported as part of a family community. Underpinning everything is the school ethos, building skills of dialogue and, with a school motto of ‘Consideration Always’, pupils are taught to understand other people’s beliefs, cultures and to have tolerance for everyone in society. For more information, visit www.sionschool.org.uk.

For the past few years, the Scootathlon has been a part of the Brighton and Hove Triathlon, but now little ones get to race twice a year as it’s also going to be included in the sister event Run2Music. John Lunt, the race director, told Primary Times, “It’s an extremely fun way to keep youngsters healthy and active. It is also great seeing them get so excited about racing with their friends. We are expecting over 120 to race in the Scootathlon and be part of a great, family fun day out at Brighton Run2music”. One of the parents whose son did the Scootathlon at the Brighton and Hove Triathlon told us, “I think it is a great idea to offer Scootathlon wherever the venue allows it. As children have so much energy, it is great to give them an outlet for it”. The scoot, bike and run Scootathlon is aimed at children aged 3 to 8 years. Distances range from 100m to 300m depending on age. Entries are priced at £20. For more information, be sure to visit www. brightonrun2music.com or call 07925 057 301.

Paint A Beautiful Bird Feeder at Squire’s
There are some great things for children to do at Squire’s Garden Centres this February Half Term. The highlight will be a beautiful ceramic bird feeder that children can paint for just £4.75. The bird feeder will look lovely in the garden, and by adding a few treats you’ll help the birds find food through the rest of the winter. There are also free activities, including a spring hunt competition around the garden centre with the chance to win a prize, and a spring flower paper maze with a sticker for all who complete it. Squire’s Create and Grow activities run from Monday 17 to Friday 21 February from 10am to 4pm. There’s no need to book. Simply turn up on the day. Each activity takes around 20 minutes. To celebrate National Nest Box Week there will also be 20% off all bird care products at Squire’s from 14 to 23 February (excluding the Create and Grow bird feeder). There are many benefits of feeding the birds, including learning about the types of birds that visit and the birds acting as a form of insect control. Time to Party The Top Three Must-Haves for a Party to Remember
The date is set, the cake is on order and the RSVPs are coming in. But how can you make sure this year’s birthday party will be one to remember? For the games, Pass the Parcel and Musical Chairs are always a great place to start. However, try including some games to really get the blood pumping. Dodgeball and Bulldog are great ways to get the party started, as long as they’re played responsibly. Food is the key to making any party a success. Catering can be expensive but if well thought out, a little can go a long way. Pizza can be shared, is more exciting than a sandwich and can be a good way to sneak vegetables into the party. And why not treat them? What party is complete without sweets and a fun drink, most of which now offer sugar-free alternatives? A great way to round off a party is with giveaways. A plastic toy has been a staple in party bags for years so why not see what else is out there? Seeds are a cost-effective option, environmentally friendly and a fun project throughout the year. If you have hired somewhere, ask the venue if they can offer coupons or other tokens as a parting gift for your guests.
Primary Times readers are being offered 10% off birthday parties (booked before 31 May) at The Pavilions in the Park and The Bridge Leisure Centre in Horsham, as well as Steyning and Billingshurst Leisure Centres. Simply quote Primary Times when making your booking. For more information, to find your nearest centre and to check out the party options available, visit www.placesleisure.org.
