Congratulations to Ebenezer Wilson from St Matthew Academy who won our 2019 Christmas Card competition. The card goes to all our schools and our fantastic advertisers so we will be very busy over the next few weeks sending out over 2,500 cards. The card is a charity card and the charity we’ve been supporting this year is CLAPA The Cleft Lip and Palate Association. We’ve enjoyed being able to work with them this year and we are delighted to keep them as our Charity of the Year for 2020 too! At this time of year we need to thank some lovely people for all their help this year. Firstly we owe a very big thank you to all our advertisers who have supported us over the last year and enabled us to deliver the magazine free to 363,810 families seven times a year. That’s a lot of support we need and we have some fantastic advertisers so do please support them too. We also want to give a really big thank you to all the amazing school staff who help distribute Primary Times. We couldn’t do it without you and are very appreciative. Finally a big thank you also to all our readers who enter our competitions, support the magazines and say such lovely things about us.

There’s no better reason to bring together children, staff, families and the local community for a memorable, fun-filled, life-changing day. Money raised by Sport Relief helps to fund amazing organisations across the UK and around the world that are tackling some of the key issues of our time, including homelessness, mental health stigma and domestic abuse. Taking part in fundraising activities makes a fantastic contribution to children’s personal development, enhancing their empathy and understanding of others’ lives, as well as giving them experience of advocacy and active citizenship. Get Ahead of the Game Why not get a head start with planning your Sport Relief fun? • Get the dates on the school calendar: 9–13 March 2020. • Visit www.sportrelief.com/primary for more information and resources from January. • Pre-order your free fundraising pack at www.sportrelief.com/ primarypack. There are lots of quick and easy ways to have fun and raise money. You and the children could: • Wear sports kit for the day in return for a small fee. • Sell Sport Relief wristbands in school. • Organise a Sport Relief Mile and join thousands across the UK as they get sponsored to walk, run, hop, scoot or swim. Or why not think big for Sport Relief 2020? Here’s how Valence School in Westerham, Kent, raised the amazing total of over £3,500 last Sport Relief! Fundraising Superheroes Valence School caters for students aged 4 to 19 who have physical disabilities and complex medical needs. Long-time supporters of Sport Relief, back in 2018 the primary school was transformed into a world of superheroes and imaginary vehicles for a sponsored Mile with a difference. Children and staff arrived for the day dressed up as their favourite superheroes and were divided into houses for a creative challenge. Armed with cardboard, sticky tape, glue and a wheelchair, older and younger children worked together with imagination and ingenuity to create everything from a yellow transformer to a red plane. Excitement mounted as the vehicles approached the start line for the Sport Relief Valence Mile. With Captain America running alongside Batman and Wonder Woman pushing Spiderman, the Mile wasn’t as easy as expected. But with some brave work by the superheroes, all teams made it to the finish. As always, Sport Relief proved a fantastic experience for all involved, bringing the school community together to share in fun, worthwhile activity.

The winter issue of Animal action - the RSPCA’s junior magazine for under 12s - is packed with brilliant RSPCA stories, news and facts about animals. Readers can find out all about a day in the life of one of the RSPCA’s busy wildlife hospitals Stapeley Grange - and how animals are rescued, rehabilitated and then released back into the wild, including an orphaned seal pup who was found struggling on a beach but is now well on the way to recovery. Catch up with Amber, a stray cat who was found homeless and hungry last Christmas but now has the purr-fect home in time for this year’s festivities. There’s a fascinating feature explaining the science behind some of the most common animal myths - like being as blind as a bat, all snakes are slimy and you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. You’ll also find handy winter care advice for your pets – dos and don’ts when the weather gets really cold. Plus there are two whole pages of competitions and fun puzzle pages too. Animal action is published quarterly and a year’s subscription will be delivered straight to your door for only £7.50 (that’s less than £2 per issue). For more details about taking out an Animal action subscription, visit www.rspca.org.uk/subscribePT.

Crawley Ice Rink
Crawley Ice Rink is back in town this winter season in a new location at Tilgate Park. The rink is ideally situated at the entrance to the park on Titmus Drive, in front of Smith & Western Restaurant, and a short walk from Tilgate Park’s Magical Christmas. The rink is open 7 days a week from 12.30pm Monday to Friday through the school term and 10am weekends and throughout the school holidays (excluding Christmas Day). It’s there until 5 January. Sessions start on the hour and are 45 minutes in duration, with skate aids available for hire for smaller children. With off-peak prices from £7, please email the team at info@crawleyicerink.co.uk for special rates for schools and community groups. It’s become quite a tradition in England to go skating at Christmas but it’s hard to make plans when you don’t know what the weather’s going to be like. One of the delights of skating at Crawley Ice Rink is that it’s under cover and, even if the snow is gently falling outside, you’re not going to find yourself sliding into a snow drift. While Grandma watches, sipping her hot chocolate, she’s not going to get soaked to the skin by a rainstorm. Why not make a day of it? Stay for lunch. Crawley Ice Rink have teamed up with Smith & Western, literally a few steps from their front door, where you can buy sumptuous food and hot drinks to warm yourselves up. Look out for the special offers with your purchases. Tilgate Park has plenty to offer. After lunch maybe you could investigate the Nature Centre, finish off your shopping at the Christmas market or even visit Santa in his Grotto. For more information, visit www.crawleyicerink.co.uk.

Children aged 5 to 13 years are invited to take part in the Leeds Castle BIG Story Writing Challenge by writing an original, fictional story of no more than 900 words. There are two age groups, 5-9 and 10-13. The closing date for entries is 6 March. This year’s theme is ‘One Golden Day’. It’s inspired by an event that took place 500 years ago in 1520 when Henry VIII stayed at Leeds Castle with 5,000 of his courtiers. He was on his way to meet the King of France for a massive jamboree that has since become known as ‘The Field of Cloth of Gold’. Leeds Castle was a royal palace at the time and it was in a key position between London and Dover. Just think what your mum or dad’s reaction might be if you invited a couple of friends for tea and the fridge was empty. Think what it must have been like for the stewards of the castle with 5000 coming to stay and one of them was the King who was known to get pretty grumpy if things weren’t just right. We haven’t even mentioned all the horses and dogs or the luggage – no Easyjet luggage allowance for Henry VIII. Oh and fridges hadn’t been invented yet! Let your imagination go wild on a theme of ‘One Golden Day’.Your story can be set in the past, present or future it’s up to you! 26
