Directory & Travel Issue 2014 letter from the publisher

Section offers new PGA golf pass The following pages contain stories on some great destinations for both family and golf buddy trips. For those adventurous golfers who like to stay closer to home, we have another great suggestion. Golf Oklahoma has teamed up with the PGA South Central Section to help promote its new PGA Golf Pass. The section approached its membership, which includes professionals in Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Kansas, to ask for one of two things. Either provide a free or heavily discounted round (along with paid cart fee) at a public courses, or in the case of a private course, provide access where before there was none. The Section will use its proceeds from the Pass to benefit both its junior golf programs and its grow-the-game initiatives under the Section Foundation. And not only is the cause worthy, the deals are excellent. We invite you to peruse for yourself all the offers at www.scspgagolfpass.com. On that site you can click on the book and look through every page as well as complete an easy online order. The price is just $49.95, not bad for a book that offers 73 free rounds of golf. It’s always interesting when updating the information on all the courses in Oklahoma to get a feel for what’s going on across the state. Throughout the 1990s, we would bring you details of four or five new courses opening each year. Now, in a year when the National Golf Foundation reports that 157 courses closed in the U.S. against just 14 openings, there are some inspiring stories of courses which have overcome long odds to survive. No better example exists than that of Sugar Creek Canyon in Hinton, which was sold to a mortuary owner who coveted the clubhouse

but had no use for the course. Folks in Hinton have come together to form an association to keep the course open and improve it if possible. It’s definitely a course worth keeping. Another return from the abyss story is The Wolf at Tenkiller near Vian. The Wolf is owned by the hard-working Fulbright family which has made it a family project to restore the course which had been closed for nearly six years. It’s got a great grill and the Duck Pin Bowling Alley to boot. Speaking of wolves, another restoration project began last fall at Wolf Ridge Country Club in Wister near Poteau. A group of more than 40 community golf enthusiasts teamed up to buy the course, which had fallen into disrepair, from its previous owner and have been working hard since to spruce up the scenic course, which is built partially on Wolf Ridge running off Poteau Mountain, billed as the world’s tallest hill. Another course where a fresh face is making a difference is the Lawton Municipal Course, where Joe English took over the lease and has been working hard to improve the irrigation system, fill in fairways and improve the bent grass greens that have been in play since at least 1946. We wrote extensively last summer about the great restoration at Boiling Springs in Woodward, led by John Dunn. This was another course that was closed and in danger of being lost. All of these courses provide crucial recreation in areas that otherwise are not overflowing with golf selections such as we enjoy in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. We wish them all the best and encourage your support as well. – Ken MacLeod

No bet, no sweat A hundred ways to lose by tom bedell

The world, it is said, can be divided into two groups – those who divide the world into two groups, and those who don’t. The world of golf almost works that way – those who wager, and those who don’t. We all know players who can’t really venture out onto the course unless there’s some kind of action on the line. The bet is the real focus, and it’s reasonable to wonder whether such players actually care about the golf at all. And we all know players who wouldn’t dream of parting with a nickel beyond the greens fee. It’s reasonable to wonder about these players whether they shouldn’t be divided into two groups – puritans, and those who just might take the game a little too seriously. I did just play with a golf writer in Texas who claimed the action helped him understand the strategy of holes better, and I believe him, since he went for a par-5 over water in two because I had him dormie with three to play and $5 on the line. Damned if we didn’t finish all square. Most of us exist in a vast middle ground as far as wagering goes. At one extreme there is the pencil pusher who can arrange more bets in a round than there are baseball games in a season – and keep track of them as well, though the scorecard may look hacked to death with graphite by the end of the match. But even this guy can sit it out if no one is moved to bet that day. His opposite is the player willing enough to throw a few bucks into the pot, but doesn’t really want to have to think much about it while play is underway. His oft-heard motto is, “Just tell me how much I owe at the end.” Then he wins all the money. My usual foursome has gone through a gradual betting metamorphosis over the years. We used to not bet at all – couldn’t be bothered – we had other troubles to keep track of. Then we started playing some twoman team games, but never bothered to pay off at the end--not much different than not betting at all, actually. Then we started giving strokes, adjusting strokes, playing some games within games, adding side bets, pressing and, most importantly, money actually started changing hands. Not a lot – the money didn’t seem to be the point. Taking our mind off those 12 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

other troubles often was. Fighting one’s own game can become wearying, especially when starting a round with a quadruple bogey, or worse. The minor yet revelatory discovery we made w a s that you c o u l d justly give up on your o w n score, and still have a dang good time playing the match. And the match could add an element of challenge to a hole or a putt that just posting a score couldn’t quite, well, compete with. They’ve known this across the pond ever since the first shepherds starting swinging their crooks. Match play is the ideal way to avoid keeping score and yet still maintain the intrinsic challenge of competition. Sometimes it may just be for the honor and the glory, although no one I know can remember the last time that was true. In the new world, the nearly universal bet is the $2 Nassau. Readers unfamiliar with this are either puritans or take the game too seriously. But golf, a game of infinite variety, offers infinite ways for a player to be burnt: Wolf, Snake, Bingo Bango Bongo, Skins, with greenies and sandies for the added seasoning, naturally. The usual foursome tried Bingo Bango Bongo recently on a buddy trip to Pinehurst. But there was so much to remember on each hole – who landed on the green first, who got down first, who made the longest putt and so on, that the game within a game became too distracting and we abandoned it. We usually play a two-man low low game, meaning there’s a point on the table for the single low score on each hole and a point for the aggregate low. If we play 18, we have

three different six-hole matches, with the three possible teams – for $2, naturally. We don’t stop there. Closest to the pin is good for a buck a man on every par-3, and $2 if one lands the sole ball on the green. (Provided one “validates” with a par or better, naturally.) We don’t necessarily stop there, either. There’s always the poker game. For this one, each player throws a buck into the pot for every three-putt. And every player gets a card for every one-putt. At the end of the round, the earned cards are dealt out and played stud style, the winning poker hand raking in the pot. There is another reason for the betting. After all, there are those in the world who drink, and those who don’t. But those that do know that the post-round beer at the clubhouse bar is usually one of the best times for drinking a beer ever conceived. And since figuring out who owes what to whom, who wins the pot, and therefore who buys the beers can take a while, it sometimes provides time enough to necessitate a second beer. This is usually a good bet, too. Tom Bedell regularly reviews books for us. He just wants to know how much he owes.

LIFESTYLE

Take your golf trip in style by greg horton

Considerations when buying a new vehicle always include price, color, amenities, and gas mileage, but storage capacity for golf equipment ought to be part of the decision as well. SUVs can be among the most expensive of vehicles, but auto manufacturers have responded well to customer demands for affordable, midsize crossovers. One of the oldest names in the travel and recreation category is Jeep. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee comes equipped with the Jeep Cargo Management System. The system allows modification to the rear storage area, and a collapsible cooler and cargo bin are two available options. The base model starts at $23,000, so getting a nicely equipped model featuring navigation, electronics, and luxury amenities is easily achieved for under $40,000. Buick has been making luxury cars for decades. They are rightly known for their commitment to comfort, space, and reliability. The 2014 Enclave, which starts at $38,000, has every conceivable convenience and luxury amenity on the list of options. The Enclave seats eight passengers in three

separate rows, and the back bend seat lays down to allow for plenty of storage space for clubs and luggage. The Enclave’s ride is incredibly smooth, and the standard V6 delivers power with decent fuel efficiency. 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Remember these travel keys by greg horton

Restaurants and hotel bars can be a mixed bag for travelers. Occasionally, you will find an excellent bar and bartender, but just as often, you will end up in a hotel with a wine list composed of wines not even suitable for cooking. We asked wine professionals and bartenders around the state what they take with them on their travels to ensure they can still drink well, even when they end up in one of the less desirable hotels. The most obvious item for wine lovers is a good wine key. A heavy duty, dual-stage wine key takes up about as much room as a comb, which is to say it will fit anywhere in your luggage or overnight bag. The easiest solution is to have two: one for home and one that remains in your overnight bag. Another solution here is simply to purchase wines with screw tops, called Stelvin closures. There was a time when only very poor quality wine came in screw top bottles, but those days ended a solid decade ago. Vintners have been transitioning to Stelvin

closures because the screw tops cut down considerably on waste, especially of the corked or oxidized varieties. Glassware is another issue. Most hotel rooms come equipped with tumblers, which are great for cocktails, but not so good for wine. Sometimes simply asking at the bar or front desk can solve the problem, but just as often, many hotel bars have terrible glassware. Depending on how much space you want to allocate for drinking, govino glasses are an excellent choice. These recyclable, plastic, shatterproof wine glasses have quickly become the go-to choice for winery tasting rooms and wine tastings. They are available in three different styles: red, white, and flute. Beer drinkers have a relatively easy time of it, except for the same glassware issue. If you are not picky about the glass (or if you just prefer bottle or can), the only item to pack is the church key. Fans of spirits have a slightly more difficult time. Bartenders were mixed in their responses about what is important. The list can be quite long, necessitating a separate shav-

ing-kit-sized bag for bar supplies. For cocktails, the best advice is to keep it simple. Yes, you could take your own muddler in case you wanted a Mojito or Old Fashioned, but that would mean you would likely need a strainer, peeler, and shaker as well. All agreed on the importance of the jigger or oxo measuring cup. It is clearly the most necessary implement, but beyond that, the best approach might be to invest in a simple portable travel bar. Hundreds of choices can be found online, and prices begin below $100 for the simplest sets. Most include space for two bottles of spirits, and good ones have space for martini or lowball glasses.

The second Big Bertha is the Alpha and it doesn’t have a sliding weight but does have a reversible carbon tube in the center of the sole to adjust ball backspin without effecting trajectory. This tube and other features of the Alpha are designed to help higher swing speed players get a low trajectorylow spin ball flight. The Big Bertha model is $399 and the Alpha model $499. The name Apex maybe 40 years old but still is immutably associated with Ben Hogan and the irons he created. Callaway bought and then sold the Ben Hogan brand but retained the Apex nomenclature and for 2014 is using it for a new forged iron. The design is a cavity back targeted at players wanting the forged-ironfeel plus wanting (or needing) game improvement forgiveness. TaylorMade Golf The dominant company in metalwoods has a new driver, the JetSpeed, which makes a nice compliment to the SLDR driver introduced last August. The JetSpeed, aggressively priced at $299, employs a very successful feature first seen on metalwoods from TMaG’s Adams Golf division, the Speed Pocket. This slot behind the clubface increases clubface flex and rebound which help for faster ball speeds. Their research found the typical golfer hits the ball towards the bottom of the clubface which tends to put way too much spin on the ball and makes it fly too high

tance. Similar to the one designed into the JetSpeed driver, and there for the same reason to help with low on the clubface impacts, this “Speed Pocket” is found in 3-iron through 7-iron but is slightly longer than the one in the RocketBladez plus it has little “handle bars” on either end. SpeedBlades—4 through PW, steel shafts—sell for $700.

Titleist Titleist’s policy is to introduce new iron models in even numbered years so for 2014 they carry the designation of 714. Neither the 714 AP1 and AP2 models break new ground but both are improvements on the previous 712s. AP1s ($800 steel and $1,000 graphite) are a cast game improvement design with a dual cavity back and tungsten weighting in the long and mid irons while the short irons have a slightly higher center of gravity and 1 degree stronger lofts to flatten the trajectory for better control. For better players the AP2s also have Titleist 714 AP1 a pair of rear

cavities with the upper being 25 percent thinner. As with the AP1s there is tungsten weighting and an additional tungsten weight near the heel, forged during the clubhead making process (called “co-forging,” a technique pioneered by Titleist). Suggested retail is $1,100 with steel shafts and $1,300 with graphite.

Tour Edge Golf One club that particularly stands out a m o n g the new introductions is the Exotics CB Pro, a limited edition fairway with a smaller “retro-look” clubhead and a sole design that is getting a lot of comments. Tour Edge wanted to minimize drag against the turf at impact especially for better players and they did it with what they call a “Slip Stream” sole. Tour Edge says the combination of the unique sole and a beta titanium cup face makes for maximum energy transfer producing both more distance Exotics CB Pro and better control. At a

suggested retail of $499 the CB Pro may not be for everyone but for players looking to get the most out of their fairway game it’s worth consideration. Finally, since one of golf’s great joys is walking, a push cart makes sense and certainly will increase your enjoyment of the round. The Bag Boy C3 model is really compact and in fact folds down to 21½ inches by 13 inches by 18 inches so it’s not a trunk space hog. However, even though it’s compact when folded, unfolded there are several features that

caught our attention. First was the price, which at $200 is easy on the budget but not to be overlooked is the one-step adjustment for the handle or that the parking brake mounted right on the handle. The C3 also accommodates either a stand bag or cart bag because the upper bag bracket has easy-to-adjust support arms. It even comes in a choice of colors, either matte black, silver/black, white/yellow or navy/white. Another attractive choice is the Speed Cart Push Cart V1 Sport from Sun Mountain, a new version of their popular Speed Cart

Bag Boy C3

push cart. The V1 has an improved design to make unfolding easier and an updated pin brake system replacing the old caliper brake. The quick release latch is very handy as is the weight at only 17 pounds. We especially liked the solid foam tires mounted on synthetic wheels making them rugged and maintenance free essentially for the life of the cart. The V1 is in stores now at a suggested retail of $199 in either white/ lime, silver/pink, black, blue, gunmetal/red, silver or gunmetal/orange.

Chamblee leads chorus for Scottsdale by bill huffman SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – It’s wise to listen to experts such as Brandel Chamblee and Michael Allen before you plan your next golf trip to Scottsdale. Both of those well-known pros have lived in Arizona’s ultimate golf destination for more than 20 years and know the lay of this gorgeous golfscape. “I was in the early part of my playing career, living in Edmond (Okla.) when I discovered Scottsdale,” chuckled Chamblee, the former Tour player who is an outspoken Golf Channel commentator. “Oh, do I remember it well. I was living with Willie Wood in Edmond, and every day during the winter months I’d wake up to 40-degree temperatures, with the wind howling about 20-, 30-, 40-mph. It got so that I couldn’t practice, and so, not being a dummy, I started catching a cheap Southwest (Airlines) flight from Edmond to Phoenix early in the morning. I’d get off the plane, practice and play all day in Scottsdale, and then fly back to Edmond that night. I did it so often that I finally got Willie to tag along.” After about four years of going back and forth between the plains and the desert, 20 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

“I can’t say I immediately liked the golf Chamblee and Wood decided to get real. “I’m not sure why, but that last year I better than I did in the Bay Area growing lived in Oklahoma, after I probably made up. I mean Arizona golf is so perfect, so topanother 40 or so of those trips, I finally notch. It’s almost like playing under a dome. In fact, I call golf in Scottsdale rented an apartment in Scottsdale “dome golf.” But there was a just a few blocks from the TPC,” lot of it to choose from, and Chamblee added. “Turned out to over the years I’ve really come be such a good move that Willie to love places like the TPC and left Edmond and moved in again.” Grayhawk and Troon North Allen, the Champions Tour and Whisper Rock. But it’s still star who grew up in the cool, dome golf to me.” damp confines of San Francisco, Allen’s short list of golf where he played such courses as courses in Scottsdale is quite the TPC Harding Park and the spectacular even if visitors Olympic Club, the storied course can’t tee it up at Whisper Rock, where he still remains a member Brandel Chamblee where nearly 30 tour players today, said Scottsdale came “unare members. And if you ask Chamblee, naturally” to him. “I was playing golf all over the world, try- who happens to serve as the official “golf ing to grind out a living, and then I arrived ambassador” for Scottsdale, that list is a mile in Arizona one day for some lucky reason,” long, considering there are almost 40 pubsaid Allen, who has won as much money lic courses within its city limits and another on the 50-and-over circuit in four years (ap- 160 within a 30-mile radius. According to Chamblee, the rest of the proximately $6 million) as he did in almost two decades on the PGA Tour, where he “best of Scottsdale” includes such layouts played in 379 tournaments without a single as Talking Stick Golf Club, The Boulders Resort, Legend Trail Golf Club, The Phoewin.

The Boulders Resort is one of Chamblee’s favorites. nician and nearby We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, which is just over the hill in adjoining Fountain Hills. Chamblee also mentioned more traditional tracks like McCormick Ranch and Camelback Golf Clubs, as well as more moderately priced courses like the TPC Champions. “I’ve been lucky to play a lot of golf at private clubs in Scottsdale like Desert Mountain and Whisper Rock,” said Chamblee, who splits his residency these days between Orlando, Fla., where he works for the Golf Channel, and north Scottsdale, where his children live. “But my favorite place is a public course -- Talking Stick North, where (architects) Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore did a dandy job of building a links-link golf course smack dab in the middle of the desert. The bunkers and mountain backdrops are just unreal out there. “Then again, Scottsdale has so many really, really good golf courses that when people ask me which one they should play, I just say: ‘Pick any of ’em. They’re all fantastic.’ “ Chamblee concurs with Allen, that the conditioning of Scottsdale’s finest is second to none. Combine that with sunshine for 330 days a year, and it’s a “win-win-win.” “There’s an ‘A’ list people like to play, and there’s a couple of courses I’ve never played but from what I’ve heard are very good,” Chamblee added. “One of those is the new Ambiente Course at Camelback (formerly the Indian Bend Course), which I hear is picture-perfect after they did a $10 million renovation.” That lush list of layouts that Chamblee referred to starts with Troon North and its dueling diamonds -- the Monument and Pinnacle. If you’ve come to the High Sonoran Desert for awe-inspiring scenery, then the Monument is definitely your first choice. If you’re a

The eighth hole at Grayhawk’s Raptor Course. single-digit or scratch golfer, Pinnacle offers a tougher test with equally impressive landmarks like Pinnacle Peak. Considering both Troon North courses are nationally ranked by most golf publications, it’s hard to go wrong although be prepared for a greens fee that will peak at $249 in high season. Talking Stick, which also has a second course built by Crenshaw and Coore in the South, is a little more reasonably priced at $185, with a twilight rate that goes even lower. The South is what you would find in the Midwest, with lots of trees and water, and just a completely different feel than the

North. According to people who run Talking Stick, both courses are so terrific that the tee sheet is split right down the middle at 50-50. The Boulders also boasts two great layouts named the North and the South. But those in the know book their golf on the South, which has an abundance of signature holes like No. 5, a par-5 that plays up a split fairway to a surreal green setting lodged in those million-year-old rocks, and the par-3 seventh hole, where a seven-story boulder called “Rosie” teeters over golfers’ heads. The Boulders will set you back $200-plus. Grayhawk, too, offers two great tracks in

the Raptor and the Talon and will hit you up for two “Benjamins.” The Raptor, which gave birth to the inaugural Match Play Championship back in the mid-1990s and also hosted the Frys.com Open from 2007 to 2009, is a rugged challenge for most golfers, which is why it proved so worthy for the pros. Talon’s chief difficulty is its multitiered greens, although you will never forget the picturesque par-3 11th hole, “Swinging Bridge” and the drivable par-4 13th, “Heaven or Hell.” Plus, Grayhawk’s service will rival any country club’s, and Phil’s Grill (named after Mickelson) might be the best 19th hole in the Grand Canyon State.

The Phoenician also has some intriguing golf in its three nines. As a rule, the higher you go up Camelback Mountain, where The Phoenician is located, the more impressive the playing field – an incredible high. And if views are your thing more than your swing, they don’t get more panoramic than those found on the Saguaro and Cholla courses at We-Ko-Pa, which is a Native American reference to the nearby Four Peaks. But say you want to spend under $100, which you can’t do at the TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course, which tops out at almost $300 following the Waste Management Phoenix Open in early February. The Champions Course at the TPC is always a bargain, and an impressive one at that, considering the Champions Tour holds its Q-School finals there each year and it gives the older Tour guys all they can handle. And even though the Stadium will remain open this year until April 1, it will be closed following that for a six-month, $10 million renovation before opening back up later this fall. Legend Trail by Rees Jones and the Mickelson-owned McDowell Mountain Club are other outstanding options in Scottsdale, as well as Vista Verde Country Club, Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club and the Golf Club at Rancho Manana (yeah, it’s a little tight but it’s beautiful). Wildfire Golf Club at Desert Ridge has 36 holes in the Palmer and Faldo courses, which, when combined, provide the backdrop for the annual LPGA Founders Cup in mid-March. And there are other courses that won’t break the bank, like Orange Tree Resort, Silverado Golf Club,

The 13th hole at Ambiente Course at Camelback Golf Club. Starfire at Scottsdale Country Club and tiny players that state has produced. And the Coronado Golf Course, an executive layout reason for that is simple: You learn to play in some mighty tough conditions there bethat literally is a walk in the park. No matter where you decide to tee it up cause nothing’s ever perfect except for a few in Scottsdale, Chamblee has your modus days a year. “Personally, I’ll take Scottsdale, where you operandi covered – and Allen would agree can go play 18 wonderful holes and then to a point. “It’s always nice to come to Arizona, kick back with a muy magnificent margarwhere everything is perfect,” Chamblee ita. Heckenkemper has a hit with TPC Champions by ken macleod

The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale draws the lion’s share of the attention thanks to the throngs who attend the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but just next door is another excellent desert course that bears the signature of Tulsa-based golf architect Randy Heckenkemper. In 2007, the TPC Champions Course was reopened after a thorough redesign by Heckenkemper of the previous TPC Desert Course designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. The intent was to take a short, tricky course that served the Scottsdale public market at about a $60 rate and give it an upgrade to where the holes were longer, more strategic and with more generous landing areas. The course is still far less expensive than The Stadium Course but commands an in-season rate of up to $139, less for locals. “The Desert Course was designed to host a huge number of rounds, but what they

24 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

found was guests were playing the Stadium Course and then going elsewhere,” Heckenkemper said. “Now they are also playing the Champions Course while they’re here.” Golf Oklahoma got a look at the course recently and found that despite the limit of maintained acreage at 85, the course alternates between a desert and parkland feel. The first hole is the only one that seems cramped. After that, an interesting array of holes awaits that includes room to hit driver but a good variety of bunnkers, native areas and water awaiting the errant shot. Some of Heckenkemper’s favorite holes are the par-4 fifth with a fairway split by a waste area, two demanding driving holes in the par-4 11th and 12th and a fun closing stretch from 16-18. Some of the mounding and ground features can be used to good effect once the course is learned. Greens are perched in different angles that lend some extra spice to the approach shots on many holes. If playing from the correct tees, however, your approach shots will be

short enough to handle the challenge. If the greens are missed, most holes have closelymown areas that provide options for chipping or pitch shots. Although there was some reluctance among a segment of Arizona golfers to losing the lower green fee on the Desert Course, the acclaim for Heckenkemper’s course from a design and playability standpoint among both golf course critics and players has been strong. “It’s really done a lot to sustain and promote my career,” said Heckenkemper, who in Oklahoma has done such projects as Forest Ridge, Chickasaw Pointe and The Territory among many others.

Stunning Sewailo

Tucson will benefit from Begay’s best by dan vukelich

A

s Golf Channel commentator Notah Begay III sees it, if designing golf courses is the best way he can create economic opportunities for fellow Native Americans, then a golf course designer he will be. Begay’s second signature course, Sewailo Golf Club, owned by the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, opened southwest of Tucson in December as an amenity of the 215-room Casino del Sol Resort. Golf Digest named Sewailo (pronounced Sih-why-lo) to its best of 2013 newcourses list. It is the first new course to open in Arizona in five years. Although he has helped develop three courses and put his name on two of them (Sewailo and Firekeepers near Topeka, Kan.), the four-time PGA Tour winner said he never set out to be a designer. “I really didn’t have a tremendous intention to get into golf design,” Begay said at Sewailo’s opening in December. “I was more concerned about economic development. This course is more of a community effort versus a stand-alone golf course.” Growing up in New Mexico, one of the poorest states in the U.S., Begay saw firsthand the positive economic impact of golf tourism among Native Americans. Seven of 19 New Mexico tribes developed golf resorts that created long-term jobs in their communities. In interviews, Begay, a full-blooded Na26 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

tive American (half part Navajo and a quarter each San Felipe and Isleta Pueblo), frequently uses the word “community.” For tribes, he said, “cultural identity is so important for the community to hold onto,” while at the same time, “the community can cultivate and harness” its culture to create jobs. Among Native Americans, unemployment over the last three years has hovered between 11 and 15 percent, nearly twice the U.S. average. In addition, one in two Native American children suffers from Type 2 Diabetes. Begay, 41, beat the odds through a childhood in Albuquerque, filled with sports – golf, basketball and soccer. Through golf, he attended Stanford University, where he was a teammate of Tiger Woods on the 1994 NCAA Division I championship golf team. He also was a member of Walker Cup and Presidents Cup teams. In 1999, he became the first full-blooded Native American to win on the PGA Tour, winning at the Reno-Tahoe Open. Within four months, he won the 1999 Michelob Championship at Kingsmill, the 2000 FedEx St. Jude FedEx Classic and the 2000 Canon Greater Hartford Open. After a recurring back injury forced him to leave professional golf, Begay founded the NB3 Foundation to combat Type 2 Diabetes and its precursor, childhood obesity. The foundation establishes youth sports pro-

grams on Indian reservations across the West. Begay believes that recognizing where you came from and honoring those who helped you along the way is a must. “You don’t have to be a superstar to be a role model, you just have to be willing to give back,” Begay said during the Dec. 12 opening of Sewailo. His foundation holds the NB3 Challenge, a fundraiser, at Oneida Indian Nation’s Turning Stone Casino & Resort in Verona, N.Y. His friend, Woods, and other PGA Tour stars have competed in his event. It was at Turning Stone that Begay met Ty Butler, a senior project architect for Robert Trent Jones II Golf Architects. In 2008-09, Begay collaborated with Butler on Sequoyah National Golf Club for the Eastern Band Cherokees near Asheville, N.C. In December 2011, Begay and his company, NB3 Consulting, partnered with Butler a second time on Sewailo. Begay worked with the tribe to analyze the economics and shepherd the project through the tribal approval process. Butler, working for JMP Golf Design, handled routing, earth-moving and construction. As the course took form, Begay tweaked the design to add strategic choices, Butler said. Now that Sewailo is open and under management of Troon Golf, Begay is looking down the road toward his next Native

Sewailo Golf Club, the new home of University of Arizona Wildcats golf teams, has some of the feel of another lavishly appointed desert oasis – Steve Wynn’s Shadow Creek near Las Vegas – but without the $500 greens fee. Dan Vukelich, a freelance golf writer, lives in Its 7,282 yards rise and fall over 200 Albuquerque, N.M., and edits newmexicogolf- acres of man-made earthen berms and news.com ridges. The course has 14 acres of lakes, a babbling brook, several waterfalls and 30,000 native and flowering plants. In the Yaqui language, Sewailo means “flower land.” Enough earth – 1.2 million cubic yards – was moved at Sewailo to build a small suburb. By contrast, a minimalist approach to laying a golf course over undisturbed terrain might entail moving 200,000 to 250,000 cubic yards of dirt. Golf architect Ty Butler said the massive earth-moving effort was necessitated by Notah Begay the “glass-flat” character of the Tucson desSewailo Golf Club: ert, the need to create elevation changes to 18 holes, Par 72 allow for tee-box views – and especially to Five tees boxes, 5,209-7,282 yards permit water to flow fast enough to create visual interest as it courses across the propSlope range: 115-138 erty. The original landscape had only a 3 Course rating range: 66.8-73.5 percent grade. Cost (low and high season): “My philosophy is more of a ‘maximal$49-$149. ist’ rather than a ‘minimalist,’” Butler said. www.sewailogolfclub.com “I’m not afraid to move a lot of dirt and (520) 838-6623 shape as necessary.”

Once Sewailo’s basic design was roughed out, Begay developed a plan for fairwayand greenside-bunkers placements to force players to make risk-reward choices. The safer route adds significantly to the length of the resulting approach shot or putt, Begay said. Water comes into play on half the holes, including the 638-yard, double-dogleg 10th, which plays uphill and requires the tee shot to skirt a lake. The second shot must clear a boulder-strewn creek and a massive fairway bunker complex. “My contention is that golf should be fair (and) that 20-handicappers should get a chance at birdie three or four times during the round,” Begay said. “Certain other holes should require you to hit a golf shot.” Begay added a 22,100-square-foot double green shared by Nos. 1 and 8 – a design element he first encountered during the 2000 British Open at St. Andrews. His personal favorite hole at Sewailo is the 155yard No. 3 over water for its photogenic qualities. The peninsula green is set in a low point on the property and is surrounded by lush mounds and a lake, flower beds and a cascading waterfall. With the casinohotel and the Catalina Mountains looming in the background, No. 3 embodies the vision of the “flower land” his clients desired, he said. www.golfoklahoma.org •••••• 27

The 12th hole on the Blue Course designed by Tom Doak. Red and Blue are walking courses. Caddies are mandatory but in fact the majority of players use a golf cart…after all this is Florida. In some months it gets very warm and with 150-foot elevation changes up and down the dunes, the decision evidentially was carts had to be at least an option. Caddies are still a must though even if riding since there are almost no directional signs and there are stories of players becoming if not actually lost at least disorientated among the sand and lake topography. From the first hole, either on the Red or Blue, the golf is probably unlike any you have previously experienced. Cart paths aren’t paved, they are covered with “reject rock” and are simply trails through the waste areas. Landing areas off the tee are generous to say the least, often 100-yards or more

wide, but don’t stray since even though the rough is nonexistent, brown and gray waste areas flank the green stuff making even finding a ball difficult. Some of the water hazards require a fairly long carry so playing the proper tee set for your ability is important. However, the genius of the design is most of the “hazard” of the water hazards is visual not requiring an adrenaline pumping pro-quality shot. And should the driver and putter be behaving the round becomes both fun and memorable. A good test for the quality of a golf course is, when walking off the 18th green to answer the question, “Would I come back here again?” For virtually anyone who experiences the Red and Blue at Streamsong the reply is an emphatic “YES.”

possesses the only PGA Tour event in Mexico at the Greg Norman designed El Camaleon layout hosting the Mayakoba Classic. It also boasts the newly opened TPC-Cancun, plus a dozen public access courses along its sunny Mexican southeastern tip with architect names like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio and Robert Trent Jones. But when it comes to challenging golf mixed with the outstanding all-inclusive lodging, it’s hard to top the Playa Paraiso resort and its par 72 P.B. Dye-designed golf course. The resort itself is made up of five different hotels, with a total of 2,000 rooms, addressing all different price points. But they all share the same access to the wide variety of restaurants, ice cream shops, water parks, shopping, entertainment, transportation, Caribbean Sea beach and, of course, golf course. Golf is included in some hotel packages and is a nominal fee for others, but while the living is easy on the Cancun beaches, the P.B. Dye course can be a bit tougher. Like his well-known father, Pete, P.B. makes this layout decidedly challenging with plenty of twist and turns through the tree-lined landscape. Many of the greens are steeply mounded which can also make putting an adventure

as well. The course was selected in 2013 as the site of Big Break Mexico competition on the Golf Channel, along with a Canadian Tour event and Monday qualifying for the local PGA Tour tournament. You can play the course as far back as 7,100 yards or as close as 5,800 yards from the forward tees. Recently, the resort teamed with golf tournament industry veteran The Golf Connection to host the second annual Iberostar Team Championship Mexico, which brought pro-am teams from Texas, the Midwest and all over the East Coast for a three-day competition. Large lakes come into play on holes 12 and 13, a par 3 and par 4 respectively and at least half of the holes are doglegged in some fashion, making ball placement off the tee critical and the free yardage book in each cart vital. There is a small clubhouse stocked with plenty of golf balls if you left too many on the Dye course, along with rental clubs. If you’re looking for a more stress free or less challenging golf experience, Iberostar also offers the Cancun Golf Club, near the downtown hotel zone. The par 72 layout was designed by Japanese golf star Isao Aokui and is a more straight forward resort

OU trainer, course rater has played 99 of top 100

Alex Brown as most OU fans know him, courtside at an OU basketball game. by john rohde

Raised in North Carolina, Alex Brown’s love for golf runs deep. In 1980, the same year Brown moved to Oklahoma, he and his parents headed west to Las Vegas when Brown’s father, Clayton, mentioned how much he had always wanted to play Pebble Beach Golf Links. Somewhere in Arizona, Alex found a pay phone and dialed the 800 number for The Lodge at Pebble Beach. “I called that number and asked if they had a room, and with a room comes a tee time,” Brown said. “They had gotten a cancellation … I got a room at the Lodge for $100 and two tee times for $30 each.” (Today, rooms at The Lodge with an ocean view start at $1,000 per night, the green fees are $495 and it costs $30 for a non-guest to just rent a cart.) That magical experience planted a seed for Brown, who has been the athletics trainer for the University of Oklahoma men’s basketball team since 1987. “That kind of ignited me on playing great courses,” Brown said. “I think I shot 112 that day, and still haven’t been able to break 80 there. The Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront course at Palmetto Dunes. Shhhhh! Listen. Don’t hear anything on our quiet links at Hilton Head (S.C.), except the chirping of your feathered friends, or your fellow birdie-chasers? Look around, everywhere, there’s challenging golf created by America’s finest golf architects, surrounded by natural seaside and marshland beauty of America’s first truly eco-planned community. There is so much to savor, whether it’s the par-3 sixth at Oyster Reef playing out to Port Royal Sound, the par-3 17th at Harbour Town playing across a marsh to Calibogue Sound before you turn to face the iconic lighthouse on the signature 18th, the par-5 10th at the Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes playing out to the Atlantic, or the island holes on both the front and back nines at Old South, looking across the water back at the Island itself, Smell a Lowcountry boil and taste the fresh crab, oysters and other native delicacies before and after your round. Feel the breeze coming off the marshes or the 12 miles of pristine Atlantic Ocean beach. Hilton Head Island golf is all about the senses. It’s also an attitude—relaxed, happy and welcoming, whether you’re visiting for 36 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

the first time, or the 51st, or if you’ve decided to make the Lowcountry your permanent home course. Idabel’s Gary Mixon had to have his “arm twisted” by his wife to make his first vacation trip east just over a decade ago. “We’d always vacationed in the West. She wanted to go to Charleston and Savannah,” said the owner of Mixon Brothers Wood Preserving. “We had a weekend in between a week in each city and decided to spend it in Hilton Head and fell in love with it. It’s relaxed, not very formal. She likes the beach

and shopping and I like to play places like Harbour Town on the Island and Eagle’s Pointe just off the Island.” Hilton Head IS the Golf Island. The two dozen courses on a 45-square mile island have hosted everything from the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage every April to past LPGA and Champions Tour events, to college golf tournaments, USGA and other national amateur events, and even a fun celebrity/charity tournament every Labor Day weekend for the past three decades. There are nearly two dozen more layouts just off the Island that also offer classic southern charm. Wonder what the pros’ top two places Oyster Reef Golf Club, a four-star Rees Jones design.

to play on Tour are? How about Augusta National and Hilton Head’s own Harbour Town Golf Links. And you and I only have access to a tee time at one of those top two. In a recent survey of Tour pros, Harbour Town came out ahead of Riviera, Pebble Beach, Colonial and Muirfield Village in the players’ rankings of their “favorite” places to play. It’s very family oriented, and I think a fun place,” says 2010 RBC Heritage champ Jim Furyk. “I enjoy coming…it’s got a different atmosphere about it. It feels a little more quaint, more like a little party than a huge bash, if that makes sense.” It does, Jim. Brandt Snedeker, the 2011 RBC Heritage winner and 2012 FedExCup champ, agrees with Furyk. “It’s cool to go to a golf course that’s really old school . . . guys like seeing that,” Snedeker said. “When we do, guys tend to gravitate to it. When you’ve got something good, you don’t have to mess with it. I think it stands the test of time.” Yet Hilton Head Island golf is no onetrick pony, not even if it’s one of Pete Dye’s most playable and entertaining courses. The developers of the private Long Cove Club, and later Colleton River, loved Dye’s design through the moss-draped oaks so much

The famous lighthouse hole at Harbour Town Golf Links. they had him design their award-winning layouts. And his re-design of the old Sea Marsh course in the Sea Pines Plantation three years ago into a completely different layout re-named Heron Point by Pete Dye, with elevation changes unseen anywhere in the Lowcountry, has received national design acclaim. It is pretty clear that Hilton Head Island golfers, like their residents, love great architecture. Designs on the Island, or across the bridge in Bluffton, by Jack Nicklaus (Colleton River, May River and Indigo Run’s two courses), Arnold Palmer (Crescent Pointe), Gary

Player (Hilton Head National and Dolphin Head), the famed Jones boys (Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s Oceanfront layout at Palmetto Dunes and Rees’ trio of courses in Hilton Head Plantation), Arthur Hills (with courses at Palmetto Hall and Palmetto Dunes), Ryder Cup Captain (and 5-time RBC Heritage champion) Davis Love III’s Eagle’s Pointe, the Fazio-designed courses at Belfair and Berkeley Hall and even the Fuzzy (Zoeller)designed Island West, offer a Rolodex of “name” choices for area players. up against any of those big names. A Hilton Head Island golf vacation, or even including a couple of rounds in a beach-or-nature-centered retreat, is just that. And an easy retreat to plan. All of the major beachfront hotels (and they’ve all been renovated in the last two years to the tune of over $200-million in upgrades) and villa rental companies can help plan your golf for you, and all of the golf courses can help you with stay-and-play packages as well—even at courses they don’t operate- all with just a couple of calls or e-mails. And all of them will help you find the best deal for two, or 102. Golf in Hilton Head is a greater value than you might think. The Mixons have done their own homework, calling different realtors until they found one they use consistently now to rent a pet-friendly house for their stay, but possibly the easiest place to start your search is at www.hiltonheadgolfisland.com , which can link you to everything “golf” in the Lowcountry. The Mixons drive from Idabel because they bring a couple weeks’ worth of items with them. Hilton Head Island does have its own airport and is less than an hour’s drive from Savannah and two hours from Charleston, two other great historic south-

ern cities waiting to be explored anytime. And with the area’s courses open year-round, you’re just a layer or two of clothing from comfort in any season. After your round? Golfers tee off on the “Million-dollar hole” on the Slick Rock Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort.

Golf in Austin is a capital idea There’s a little bit of everything at these Central Texas golf resorts by steve habel

Sometimes it seems that the only people not in a hurry to move to the Texas Hill Country and Austin are those who have never visited the most verdant and vibrant region of the Lone Star State. Austin is bustling and nearly bursting at the seams, with construction continuing at a fever pitch. Recent statistics show that 70 people move to Austin every day, as the city has grown 2.7 percent in the past three years to about 842,000 citizens in the city limits alone. There are more than 2.5 million people in the Austin metro area, a number that’s expected to double by 2030. Despite the growth, Austin still holds on to its small-city charm. Part of that appeal is the great golf options that the area offers, led by three of the nation’s top golf resorts – all within a 45-minute drive of the downtown sector and the gleaming Texas State Capitol building. Barton Creek is the most well known and has been a top destination for decades. Following is a closer look at the other two major golf destinations in the area, Lost Pines Resort and Horseshoe Bay Resort.

Wolfdancer GC highlights package at Bastrop’s Hyatt Lost Pines Resort A trip to the fabulous Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort just east of Austin works to lull visitors into a splendid bliss, thanks to its call for serenity and relaxation and a feeling that you’re far off the beaten path. The Hyatt Lost Pines Resort is two miles off the main road, but it feels utterly secluded, as it is surrounded by sleepy farms and the 1,100-acre McKinney Roughs nature preserve and set just across the Colorado River. 40 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

A combination of the resort’s Texasthemed hotel, its lavish spa, an unmatched lazy-river pool and other environs creates a world of things to do that recharges one’s battery. But for the golfers in the brood, there are plentiful challenges that command and demand attention and precision. Here, in these rolling hills and among stands of tall “lost” pines and along the banks of the Colorado River is the Wolfdancer Golf Club, a 7,205-yard, par-72 gem designed by Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates. The track, which opened in June 2006, makes the most of the region’s terrain and natural beauty and occupies about 150 acres of the sprawling 405-acre Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort, located about halfway between the Austin airport and the town of Bastrop. At Wolfdancer there are plenty of pines but there are even more ancient oaks, cedar elms and pecans. The trees impact your play, but not so much as you feel you’ll need an axe for your 14th club, as the sparse grouping – some of it naturally occurring, some the result of skilled selective-clearing – acts to keep you out of trouble instead of being punitive. On many golf courses, an architect is lucky to have two desirable golf environments in which to create distinct golf holes. At the Wolfdancer, Hills and Forrest had three: high prairie, forested ridgeline and a sparsely wooded floodplain along the river bank. Most of the fairways at Wolfdancer are fairly wide and the approach shots can be challenging. There are lots of randomly scattered steep faced bunkers just waiting for your ball, and No. 8 sports the 15-foot deep “Big Mouth” that guards the fairway. The greens are large and undulating and kept quick but fair and in very good condition.

No. 12 at Wolfdancer is one of the prettiest and perhaps most challenging holes in Texas. The 155-yard, drop-shot par-3 featured a green that seems to cling to the side of a mountain and looks like a tabletop from the tee box, which sits atop a ridge with a 180-degree view looking down on the remainder of the course, the Colorado River, the entire resort area and far into the distant horizon. Be sure and bring your camera with you on the way up the steps. But things change when you leave the 12th green and head down to the river valley below. The final six holes run back and forth in the flatlands that line the Colorado and cut through the old, broad-canopied oak, cedar and pecan trees. Wolfdancer offers golfers five sets of tees to fit the round to their game, and the tips are rated at 76.1 and sloped at 137. The track has been lauded as the No. 6 on the Best Courses You Can Play” in Texas and is No. 56 “Top 100 Resort Golf Courses,” both by Golfweek magazine. Away from Wolfdancer, relaxation is the modus operandi at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort. The experience is highlighted by Spa D’jango, the resort’s full-service 20,000-square-foot spa and eight separate dining opportunities. Recreational amenities include a water park with multiple pools, including a 1,100foot flowing river pool and water slide; Camp Hyatt children’s program, bike riding, equestrian program, kayaking, rafting and fly-fishing on the Colorado River, as well as more than 16 miles of hiking trails. The resort also offers more than 60,000 square feet of indoor function space and 230,000 square feet of outdoor function venues.

Horseshoe Bay Resort No place is better for a set of challenges on the links than the venerable – but always

playing through...“ Tomorrow” Deep canyons, panoramic vistas and forested fairways are just a few of the many reasons to tee up on the most diverse terrain in the nation. fresh – Horseshoe Bay Resort, established in 1971 on the south shores of Lake LBJ in the heart of the Texas Hill Country near the small town of Marble Falls. The years have been kind to Horseshoe Bay and especially the resort’s three championship Robert Trent Jones golf courses. Horseshoe Bay Resort is home to the largest golf complex personally designed by Jones, whose hand has influenced the shape of 10 former U.S. Open venues. You’ll need all your skills to master Horseshoe Bay’s visually challenging offerings, many of which look harder off the tee than they really are. The resort’s Slick Rock course, which sits south and east of the other two golf courses and was the first built, opened for play in 1972. It embodies the Jones philosophy of “hard par, easy bogey,” carrying a rating of 72.8 and a slope of 138. The front-nine is routed through colorful outcroppings of granite and a magnificent mixture of native oak, cedar, persimmon and pine trees, while the back-nine is open and gently rolling. Slick Rock’s most famous hole is the 14th, called “The Million Dollar Hole,” which was added to the course in 1990. The hole, a slightly uphill dogleg-right 361-yard par-4, sports a winding cart path that takes golf-

ers on a ride through a waterfall that spans more than 35 yards and dumps more than 8,000 gallons of water into Slick Rock creek each minute. Don’t worry, you won’t get wet as long as you stay in your cart. Slick Rock is considered the easiest and most forgiving of the Horseshoe Bay’s trio of courses and was chosen as one of the six best inland resort golf courses in the book “America’s Greatest Golfing Resorts.” If Slick Rock is the sheep of the three courses at Horseshoe Bay, then Ram Rock is the mountain lion. The course, which opened in 1981, has earned respect for its toughness and as one of the stoutest tests of championship golf in the United States; Ram Rock has been named the hardest 18hole layout in the state of Texas and singled out as one of the nation’s outstanding golf courses by various publications and golf journals. With narrow fairways, natural streams, plenty of water and sand, rock gardens, granite outcroppings, blind tee shots and all manners of trees, bushes and plants, Jones held nothing back to challenge golfers on Ram Rock. This is a roller-coaster ride of a course – you are constantly going up and down and from side to side – and sometimes just survival of the 18 holes seems like an

The Horseshoe Bay Resort is a real load of fun, no matter your specific tastes or the shape of your golf game. For golfers, the appeal of the city and the region is obvious; the skies are clear about 300 days a year and one can hit the links in all seasons. In fact, Golf Magazine (through its web portal, Golf.com) named Austin as America’s top city for golf in 2008 and the courses that publication loved so much are even better now than they were then.

Golf next door The Natural State Golf Trail by wayne mills

Avid golfers search the world over for their next golf destination. Sometimes, in doing so, they overlook great opportunities right next door. Oklahomans might want to consider their easterly neighbor, Arkansas, and their Natural State Golf Trail for a high quality- excellent value vacation. Offering up some twelve outstanding golf venues in eleven locations sprinkled about the state along with other opportunities such as fishing, biking, hiking, boating, swimming, climbing and camping makes Arkansas a destination to please the entire family. The course locations run the gamut from country farmscapes, to resorts, to residential areas and national parks; from the Ozark Mountains to the Mississippi River Delta but they all share outstanding characteristics in course design, course condition, level of challenge, playability, and conditioning of facilities, customer service and food service. The first stop should be in the college town of Fayetteville, home to the University of Arkansas, which is less than two hours east of Tulsa. Plush accommodations can be had at the centrally located Chancellor Hotel, fresh off a $22 million facelift, which puts you right in the heart of the action. 46 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

Oklahomans can get a little taste of home at Stonebridge Meadows Golf Club built on an old horse farm just outside of town. Tulsa native and OSU grad Randy Heckenkemper did the design honors for the Meadows family who were familiar with Heckenkemper’s work at Forest Ridge Golf Club in Tulsa. The result is an enjoyable mix of playability and challenge through old pastures, up into the wooded hillside and back down with a great finish from the dogleg par 4-16th, the gorgeous par 3-17th over water and a strong par 5 finisher that makes you think on every shot. A bit south of Fayetteville is Alma, home to Eagle Crest Golf Course an 18 hole layout designed by for PGA Tour Players champion Mark Hayes and a qualifying site for the Web.com Tours Fort Smith event. Big Creek Golf and Country Club, winner of Golf Digest’s coveted five-star ranking nine years in a row, is a Tom Clarkdesigned gem in the Ozark resort/retirement destination of Mountain Home and not to be missed if you are in the area. A bit south of Mountain Home, clustered around the massive Greer’s Ferry Lake, is a trifecta of courses that will satisfy any golfers yearnings. The recreational activities on Greer’s Ferry Lake are about endless and

there is world record trout fishing on the Little Red River. Mountain Ranch Golf Club at Fairfield Bay, designed by well known architect Edmund Ault, is Ozark golf all the way playing longer than the 6,700 yards on the card with elevation changes of more than 80 feet in places. Mountain Ranch has hosted five state championships and is ranked #2 in the state by Golf Magazine. Next door is Tannebaum Golf Club, a tree lined roller coaster ride featuring the par 3-12th hole with its 130 foot drop down to an island green. The Red Apple Inn and Country Club is a genteel low key resort located on an island in Greer’s Ferry Lake. The golf course is a 1960’s vintage resort style that would be a great round for couples. In addition the mellow atmosphere, outstanding food and impeccable service make for a pleasant visit. Heading over toward the Delta region is Sage Meadows Country Club in Jonesboro, a semi-private club with Zoysia fairways, bentgrass greens and water on nine holes that was designed by the legendary and volcanic Oklahoman Tommy Bolt. Club throwing there is optional. Located atop Crowley’s Ridge, a unique landform in Northeast Arkansas, Village Creek State Park in Wynne is the home the newest course on The Natural State Golf Trail, The Ridges at Village Creek which opened in May 2012 and features 27 holes for play.

Further south in the historic town of Pine Bluff is where you’ll find the country hospitality of Harbor Oaks Golf Club featuring a weekday walking rate of only $22. Be sure to visit the Delta Rivers Nature Center and Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame, as well as festivals and concerts held year round. For classic Southern charm there is no better place than Hot Springs Country Club. Opened in 1898 and nestled in the Ouachita Mountains foothills, the Hot Springs Country Club offers two courses, The Arlington and the Park. The Arlington was recently renovated by former Masters Champion Ben Crenshaw and is a tight old school layout while the Park has a bit more room to maneuver. To get the complete ambiance of Hot Springs the must stay is the classic Arlington Resort Hotel, a grand hotel in the old Southern tradition. Located just outside Hot Springs, Glenwood Country Club is one of the top golf courses in Arkansas. Designed by Bobby McGee (apparently somewhat after he was “busted flat in Baton Rouge” with Kris Kristofferson) and opened in 1994, the course was renovated in late 2010 and restored to its original design with new bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways. The website- naturalstategolftrail.com is one stop shopping that links to each course and offers accommodations and custom packages.
