Blast it! Hot drivers debut in 2017 by ed travis

Each year the myriad number of club models being introduced can be bewildering for golf consumers. Changes in technology, the differences in design, the use of aerospace materials and how it all affects the performance are critical to making a good buying decision. The bottom line is to find the clubs that will help compensate for your swing flaws, help you score lower and match your wallet. Golf Oklahoma has researched the latest models being offered for next season and here are those we consider significant, spotlighted for our readers. Drivers are a good place to start. Not only are they the flagship for most manufacturers, packed with the latest technology and made with Callaway Golf computer-aided designs plus the most exotic materials but they are the most expensive to Great Big Bertha Fusion driver purchase. Some topline drivers may cost as much as a set of irons. First on our list (it’s alphabetical) is Callaway Golf’s Big Bertha Fusion driver ($400). According to the company the “Big Bertha

Fusion pushes the boundaries of forgiveness like no Callaway club ever has.” The clubhead has a titanium exoskeleton with the space in between filled with a lightweight very strong carbon composite. The Speed Step from last year is evident on the crown for less aerodynamic drag and the BBF offers a choice of stock Mitsubishi’s Diamana Red shaft lengths, either 44.5 or 45.5 inches. Cobra’s new King F7 driver comes with the Cobra Connect system, an Arccos Driver sensor is embedded in the grip which records every shot via a free smartphone app. The price for the King F7 is $349 and it has lots of features golfers are Cobra King looking for such as a three-posiF7 driver tion adjustable weight system, a thinner version of Cobra’s E9 forged face design and a carbon fiber crown. Add the eight loft setting hosel and a larger profile for a high MOI (resistance to

twisting) and the King F7 is worth checking out. Titleist brings out new woods in odd numbered years and for 2017 there are the 917 D2 (460cc) and 917 D3 (440cc) models with a reversible cartridge weight in the sole to adjust launch trajectory and spin. They make use of the sole slot Titleist introduced in the 915 model and adjustments to the clubface perimeter thickness for better ball speed. The D2 is for recreational players, the D4 for advanced players and both sell for $499. Last year’s M1 and M2 drivers from TaylorMade Golf were an outstanding success and the new M1 and M2 Titleist for 2017 follow up with 917 D2 driver some significant improvements. The M1 2017 adds a carbon composite panel in the sole and a lower density titanium body combined with a thinner

carbon composite crown to save weight. This allowed the T-Track sliding weights to be made larger and with heavier weights for added adjustability. The M2 doesn’t use the sliding weights of the T-Track but does have an enlarged sole slot behind the face that has three times more flexibility. Overall the forgiveness has been enhanced, giving one of the highest driver MOIs on the market. The M1 is $500 and the M2 is $400. We are intrigued by Tour Edge Golf use of Kevlar and what they call SUPERMETAL in the new Tour Edge XJ1 driver. SUPERMETAL is a very light and very strong 9-1-1 titanium alloy that lets more weight be moved to the sole, which in conjunction with a crown made of a Kevlar-carbon combination produces, according to Tour Edge, a higher launch and lower spin. The XJ1 also has a robotically laser bonded titanium face and three tungsten sole weights with heel

and toe bars for a better resistance to twisting. A replaceable tungsten heel screw completes the package which sells for $700. Wilson Staff used the reMizuno ality show format of Driver JPX900 vs. Driver on the Golf Channel to come up with a new design called the Triton. Not only are there three interchangeable sole weights with 18 placement combinations but replaceable sole plates of titanium and carbon fiber to adjust clubhead center of gravity and therefore launch trajectory. A striking feature at address is the ball width alignment stripe across the crown which Wilson calls the 1:1 Swing Plane Reminder. At this writing Wilson was waiting on the expected approval of the Callaway Triton by the USGA. Steelhead XR Retail price will be $450. Moving over to irons, Callaway has brought back the Steelhead name first used back in 2000 for the Steelhead X-14s with the Steelhead XR. The new XRs have the company’s 360 Face Cup construction with a bar of steelinfused urethane behind the lower part of the face for vibra-

tion absorption and to lower the center of gravity. A borethrough hosel helps move weight back into the clubhead and they have a progresPing iBlade sive center of gravity. Steelhead XRs do look something like the previous model and with steel shafts a 4-iron through sand wedge set retail for $800. Cobra made lots of sales last year with the King F6 model irons, so for 2017 has the updated King F7 with a thinner face, larger sweet spot and CNC milled grooves. The 3- through 5-irons are a hollow construction with the 6- and 7-irons being half hollow while the scoring irons 8- through pitching wedge are a traditional cavity back. A seven iron set with steel shafts is $699. However, the most interesting development from Cobra are the King F7 One Length irons inspired by Bryson DeChambeau on the Cobra staff this year after winning both the U.S. Amateur and NCAA titles. Each iron is the same length and weighting of a 7-iron on the theory it simplifies set up and, since the same swing is used with each, dispersion decreases for more accuracy. Construction is similar to the regular King F7s as is the price. There’s a whole new iron family from Mizuno for next season, the JPX900s, and while the Tour and Forged models have their points the Hot Metal model is the one for average players. The face is the thinnest the company has ever made and uses a chrome steel alloy with a head de-

The cup face construction offers a larger area of high rebound w i t h Srixon Z 565 iron weight distributed around the perimeter of the club. A set with steel shafts of 4-iron through gap wedge is $900. In a word, the iBlade irons from Ping are pretty. . . well may be not pretty, but certainly good looking. They are a redesign of the S55s from 2015 with a thinner top rail, thinner face and a sharp high toe that makes them look great at address. Added heel relief and modified bounce angles help shots from most any lie aided by an elastomer insert to cut vibration and improve feel. Suggested retail with steel shafts is $162.50 each. Srixon is making a push for added market share in the U.S. and has switched all its iron and woods efforts away from Cleveland Golf, which still makes some of the best wedges around, to its own brand. The Z 565 game-improvement irons have a strong steel face plate set in a forged carbon steel body with a full length cavity pocket in the rear.

TaylorMade M2 Grooves have been made five percent larger to produce more spin. A set of eight irons is $1,100. TaylorMade has re-engineered the M2 irons with a thinner topline, shallower blade height and a deeper Speed Pocket plus thinner front wall. Pricing when released on January 17 for the M2 ’17 will be $799 with steel shafts and $899 with graphite. They also introduced a totally new model, the M1 irons for better players, with a tungsten weighting and the face slots from the RSi/PSi models. M2 irons will be $799 with steel shafts, $899 with graphite and the M1 irons $999 steel/$1,199 graphite.

So, when can we get Cubans? by laramie navrath

There’s plenty of talk around the cigar shop. “When can we get Cubans?” is heard on a daily basis and the answer is not simple but fairly straightforward, when the embargo is lifted and the courts rule on branding. With that in mind there is resurgence in brands that are making a splash in the business with Cuban roots. In the late 1800s, Segundo Lopez introduced the Particulares brand in Cuba. Lopez would later go on to establish Byron cigars and the single most renowned cigar in the world: Montecristo. While the latter two brands have continued on in one form or another to this day, the Particulares name was left collecting dust . . . until now. In the summer of 2016, Sindicato revived Particulares and its classic Habano blend that stays true to the cigar’s historic beginnings. Particulares was introduced in 4 sizes and is packaged in authentic, Cubanesque dress boxes of 20 cigars, using the original vista artwork. Improvements in golf attire will continue to drive much of the sport’s merchandising in 2017, according to retailers and golf professionals in Oklahoma. Wicking was one of the dominant stories of 2016, and manufacturers are expected to create new blends to increase the breathability and flexibility of fabrics beyond just wicking. “The clothing just keeps getting better,” said Pat McCrate, the director of golf for LaFortune Park Golf Course in Tulsa. “A lot of the buzz I’m seeing is about improving SPF in the game.” McCrate said the trend in sun protection is toward long-sleeve shirts, much like the ones worn by South Korean LPGA golfers. The shirts have to balance the benefits of protecting the skin from direct sunlight while losing the benefits of natural sweat cooling. Golfers also have to factor in breathability and flexibility for long sleeves. Tara Grant, a merchandiser at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, said Under Ar-

Player course to open in Branson by ken macleod

A few key details remain to be confirmed, but the short course designed by Gary Player will open for play to the public and guests of Big Cedar Lodge this spring in Branson. The Player Course hasn’t been officially named yet, nor is the price, opening date or even final number of holes strictly firmed up. All of that is still being finalized by the Big Cedar folks, led by owner Johnny Morris, as he continues to remake Branson into a world-class golf destination. Morris is the founder of Top of the Rock, the unique nine-hole Jack Nicklaus par-3 course set above his spectacular Big Cedar Lodge and home to the Legends of Golf April 17-23. He also acquired – and has been performing major renovations to -- Buffalo Ridge, formerly Branson Creek, the Tom Fazio-design that is one of the top courses in Missouri. The Player Course is a par-3 set on land that was partially used previously by the Murder Rock course that Morris purchased and closed. The former Murder Rock clubhouse with 360-degree views atop the property has been renovated and will be used for the Player Course. Morris consulted with Player on the design to make certain it accentuated the natural features, including walks on the ridge, staggering tees at unique angles to create panoramas. The two added a series of winding bridges to help transport golfers from hole to hole. “We’ve built more than 300 courses over the years, but never one as drastically stunning as this,” Player said. “The transitions between wonderful rock formations and breathtaking views make this amazing wonder a true national treasure “This is going to be a very special experience and one that people will never forget, with a course that reveals nature’s hidden talents of over 300 million years. The Weibring-Wolford Group designed WinStar’s original course (now called the East and West nines) to compliment the rustic beauty of its natural setting, featuring sandy natural areas, native prairie grasses, tree groupings, four lakes and native wildlife on 225 acres of Red River basin. It was routed on land that used to be a peanut farm. The WinStar course, originally considered as a respite for the casino rather than a draw on its own, has morphed through the past decade to a 27-hole facility as an additional nine holes, also designed by Weibring and Wolford, opened in 2011. Championship will be held at Win-Star the first week of Sept. with live coverage of the finals Sept. 5-6 on The Golf Channel. “We currently have 601 VIP members and we can call almost every one of them by name,” Ferguson said. “Our competition is not public golf courses – its high-end private clubs but with a very big difference. “We are a resort that caters to the whole experience, with gaming, great food, excellent lodging and a wonderful challenging golf course that’s only going to get better and a second-to-none golf academy facility to help your game if you want it. The best private clubs can’t offer what we can.” Ferguson said his 27-hole facility hosted about 30,000 rounds last year, but added that its business model is not based on a predetermined amount of play – its built on providing something that guests who are golfers can’t get anywhere outside Las Vegas. “We are not here to make money,” he said. “We are here to make our guests feel good and want to come back. We try to get better every day; the only pressure I feel as a general manager is making sure our guests enjoy a complete resort experience. Our golf course is just another part of that focus.”

Hot Springs Village is now a destination, with all the amenities of lakes, golf, tennis, fitness, dining and real estate.” Troon Golf, has already helped HSV courses increase play by about 15 percent in two years. It’s done so by pulling back the curtain and allowing more access to a remarkable golf playland, one with eight outstanding tree-lined courses to go with numerous lakes, boat rentals, tennis, fitness, lawn bowling, 30 miles of hiking trails and great restaurants such as Chef Johnna’s at Club Desoto or Elan’s at Granada Golf Club. The house our group stayed in this fall, with four bedrooms, a dock on a a beautiful lake, large deck, screened patio, living room, full kitchen and four baths, would rent for about $270 a night, so less than $70 per person if you had four individuals or couples. Golf can be set up on any of the Village courses except Diamante, which is private. That leaves seven championship courses and the par-62 executive course Coronado, which is a great challenge itself. No question the twin stars of the Village are Isabella and Granada, the final two

courses Clark designed there. Both big, broad-shouldered courses feature ample room off the tee but all the challenges one could want in terms of elevation changes, strategic bunkering, subtly-breaking greens and well-placed ponds. Nearly all holes on both courses are isolated by dense trees and pleasant landforms, including long views of rolling pine-forested hills in the nearby Ouachita National Forest. Any housing is set back and unobtrusive. Since most member rounds are being played for $20 or less plus annual property owner association fees, it’s amazing the level of conditioning the superintendents at the Village maintain on all the courses. Like anywhere in the transition zone, stress

on bent grass greens can occur in certain years, and two of the courses (Magellan and DeSoto) have converted to Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda. In addition to rounds at Granada and Isabella, our recent visit included a round at Cortez, a winding, scenic shot-maker’s course where positioning is as important off the tee as length. We’re going to have to return soon to tackle DeSoto (the original course opened in 1972), Ponce de Leon, Magellan, Coronado and Balboa. Knowing Clark’s work, they each have their own flair and character, though the terrain may be similar. “From a design standpoint with the rolling hills, woods, lakes, it was everything you needed to work with,” Clark said. “I look at my mantle of work there and it took me through my whole professional career. You try to make each course different from the style of bunkering, the strategies and the look. And because there was an emphasis on an older population, a lot of care and emphasis went into the look and strategies from the forward three tees, which is where almost everyone plays.” Each course has its own clubhouse, manager and maintenance crew. Sam Meredith, formerly head professional at both Forest Ridge and Muskogee Golf Club, is now the head professional at Diamante, the private club managed by Club Corp. Hot Springs Village is an easy morning drive from both Tulsa and Oklahoma City, part of its appeal to the Sooner state. Clark, whose home office is in Virginia,

worked in Arkansas on and off from 1974 until finishing up Granada in 2004 and the third nine at Isabella shortly after. His partner, Edmund Ault, designed DeSoto in 1972 and Clark did the rest. Among the memorable stories was the time he met John Cooper (owner of Cooper Communities) for breakfast at a Holiday Inn in Bentonville. They were enjoying the meal with another nice but unassuming couple when Clark excused himself to use

Big changes good news for Bella Vista visitors by ken macleod

ith its low profile in recent years, some may have thought Bella Vista Village had disappeared into a wrinkle in the space-time continuum. Not so. The unique six-course community in Northwest Arkansas just north of the Walmart-home of Bentonville has gone through a major internal and external selfexamination and scrubbing in advance of a positive new push for membership and visitors. The Bella Vista Property Owners Association board pretty much cleaned house in the last year, bringing in a new COO in Tom Judson, a new director of golf operations in Phillip Wright, a new marketing director in John Walsh, and other key personnel. In 2014, Keith Ihms, who was then the president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, was brought in to oversee and im-

prove maintenance. “The marching orders were clear,” Judson said. “To fix what needed fixing, make changes and improvements and move forward.” A lot needed done. The Scotsdale Golf Club course and somewhat dilapidated clubhouse were in need of major renovation. “It was an eyesore and now it’s just fantastic,” Judson said The old clubhouse was razed in favor of a new homey pub house that serves Scotch and beer only along with its softer drinks. On the course, the links feel was accentuated by stacked permanent sod bunkers imported from soccer pitches in England. The new green complexes used Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda, the first course at the complex to convert from bent grass. The firmer surfaces allowed for a variety of run-up areas while the green surrounds feature a variety of grasses mowed to different heights. “Almost nobody was playing Scotsdale and now it’s packed,” Ihms said. “Anytime you do a renovation it’s a painful and expensive process, but people are happy when it’s

all said and done. I think we’ve shown that with a modest investment we can make a huge impact on the quality.” The transformation there is indicative of what has happened and will happen throughout Bella Vista. Built originally by Cooper Communities as a unique retirement community, Bella Vista is now an incorporated city of close to 30,000 with its own police and fire departments. Many younger workers and families have moved into the east side, attracted by moderate pricing and an easy commute to Bentonville. For most Oklahomans, it’s an easy drive to a destination that includes rental homes, condos or hotel rooms along with the opportunity to play numerous entertaining courses along with fishing, boat rental, pistol and rifle ranges, tennis, recreation centers, trails, miniature golf and hiking, all for very modest pricing. The wicker gondola bounced and bumped along the fairway for about 10 yards, then tipped over, awkwardly, the envelope dragging it and the balloon’s three occupants until it stopped in front of the eighth green of the University of New Mexico North golf course. My playing partner, a visitor to town, was in awe. Me? All I saw was a colossal distraction between me and my ball, which I’d just hit to about 15 feet. Then they packed up and drove off, laughing. A happy, well-lubricated bunch for 9 a.m. on a Sunday. Sadly, I missed my birdie putt. For nine days each October, that scene is repeated on golf courses, alfalfa fields and vacant lots across Albuquerque – any space large enough to allow a balloon to land. Balloonists come to Albuquerque each fall for the same reason as golfers. The mornings start briskly, then warm quickly. There’s plenty of sunshine and light wind. In a good year, I can play golf in shorts and shirtsleeves through Thanks-

giving. The next best time to play is in May and June, before the summer’s heat and afternoon thunderheads start building. And because we’re a mile above sea level, golf balls here travel about 12 percent farther in the thin, dry air.

AL BUQU ERQU E 4546). In 1966, Red Lawrence (The Wigwam, Desert Forest) built this hilly test that’s hosted NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s National Golf Championships. UNM is only a 7-iron away from the Albuquerque airport rental-car center, which makes it ideal for the first or last round of your trip. Also in Albuquerque: Arroyo del Oso (municipal) Golf Course; Isleta Eagle Golf Course, 27 holes; and UNM North, a ninehole course on the main UNM campus.

Santa Fe Cochiti Golf Club (cochitigolfclub.com; 505-465-2230). In 1981, Robert Trent Jones Jr. cut this target-style course through spectacular red-rock canyons on Cochiti Pueblo, midway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. There are no houses or highways near the course, and no sounds except the wind in the trees and the crack of your golf shot. After years of haphazard management, two veteran PGA professionals turned operations and conditions at Cochiti around so dramatically that it was picked as the state amateur venue. Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe (linksdesantafe.com; 505-955-4400), is a city-

owned modified desert links course designed by Baxter Spann just 15 minutes west of the Santa Fe Plaza. “Marty,” as it’s called, offers a last-minute alternative to gallery-crawling or shopping.

Worth the drive Towa Golf Club (74 miles, 1 hour, 5 minutes). Built on Pojoaque Pueblo land north of Santa Fe, Towa’s nines, designed by Hale Irwin and William Phillips, run through valleys on either side of a boulder-strewn ridge with great views of the desert terrain that Georgia O’Keeffe loved to paint. Black Mesa Golf Club (84 miles, 1 hour, 15 minutes). Baxter Spann’s design north of Santa Fe on Santa Clara Pueblo land has undergone some management changes since it was ranked on the national magazines’ Top 100 lists. Spann’s use of the existing terrain is a monument to minimalism. Taos Country Club (127 miles, 2 hours, 10 minutes). Cut through a kneehigh forest of sage, it offers dramatic views of 13,159-foot Mount Wheeler, New Mexico’s highest peak. It’s 19 degrees outside, the fields are covered in white, my steps are coated with ice. So naturally, here in early January, I’m thinking about spring in Vermont. In late March, I’ll be on the near-edge of cabin fever, tired of putting on the living room rug, and itching from my woolen socks and the urge to get back out on a golf course. A shortened golf season is the price one pays to live in Vermont, but I happen to think it’s worth it, enamored as I am with the other charms of the state. So I’m sitting here by the blazing wood stove, writing this in relative equanimity, even though my last round in my adopted state was in mid-November. In good years we’ll play into December. It all depends on the snow which, once it arrives, usually doesn’t depart until spring. 36 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

If it’s been a mild winter we might be working the rust out of our swings by late March, more likely April, though most of the mountain courses won’t open until May. So there’s a lot of golf to cram into the summer months, and there may be nothing better than playing here among the flaming colors of autumn. Vermont is aptly called the Green Mountain State. When even the interstates are scenic routes, it’s not a surprise that tourism rivals dairy farming as the major cog of the economic engine. If it’s true that Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys originally banded together to drive New York settlers out of Vermont, all was forgiven after the Revolutionary War, and visitors from New York, Oklahoma or anywhere else are welcome back, particularly on the 70-plus local fairways, most

of them public. That may not sound like many, but remember that Vermont is not a huge state— slightly more than 600,000 souls call it home, meaning our two senators in the U.S. Congress outnumber the lone congressman. Traversing the state at the southern end can take less than 45 minutes, provided you don’t get stuck behind a truck going uphill. A foot to head trek (or vice versa) is doable in about 3 hours, unless you do what I did one year — play one hole at every course along Route 100, which begins at the southern border and runs out of asphalt just a few miles short of Canada. Those 18 holes took me and the two other innocents I had coerced to come along about 15 hours. (And included an extra hole at a miniature golf course.)

But wherever you enter the state you’re never too far away from the next good golf course, a good golf school, or a good glass of beer (Vermont has more breweries per capita than any other state). For those pondering a visit, here are just a few south to north recommendations:

ON THE TEE The southern border is a drive of threefour hours from Manhattan, a little over two hours from Boston. The Brattleboro Country Club is a lively curtain-raiser in the equally lively town of Brattleboro, a brisk introduction to the rolling elevation and expansive views found throughout a state where an uneven stance is more the rule than the exception. The BCC began as a nine-holer in 1916, redone by Donald Ross contemporary Wayne Stiles in 1930, and expanded to 18 in 2000 with new holes blended in by native son Steve Durkee. The differences in design were distinct in 2000, but if now more seamlessly blended there’s still a nice yin yang of contemporary and classic holes at Brattleboro, and the state couldn’t present a better opening act. Unless one travels slightly northwest to

The Marsh Tavern there has welcomed visitors since 1769, and now the Tavern is a dining area at The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa, a lovely high-end resort. (Fully entitled to its slogan, “Serving the Republic since before there was a Republic.”) One can indulge in a plethora of activities here — a Green Mountain Falconry School, an Orvis Fly Fishing or Shooting School, a Land Rover Driving Experience — when not driving the fairways of the Golf Club at Equinox. This 1927 Walter Travis design, buffed up by Rees Jones, could hardly be in a prettier setting amongst the surrounding hills with

a view of the steepled village. Travis also designed the adjacent but private Ekwanok Country Club (check your reciprocals!) where Robert Todd Lincoln, the only son of the President to survive into adulthood, served as club president. Oddly enough, the Equinox course was the famed player’s last design, while Ekwanok was his first, making Manchester the alpha and omega of his design career. (And for that matter his final resting place – in Dellwood Cemetery, just down the road from both courses.) With a few samples under one’s golf belt, it’s time to go whole hog ski mountain golf at the 27 holes of the Stratton Mountain

The Okemo Valley Golf Club at Okemo Mountain Resort. Country Club, designed by the late Geoffrey Cornish, who was the dean of New England golf architects, working into his 90s. There are three playing combinations here with the separate nines – the Mountain, Lake and Forest tracks – though playing all three was the way I tackled it last season. I’d certainly recommend penciling in the Mountain route because it would be unfortunate to miss the par-5 fifth. From the blue tees it’s 621 yards, one of, if not the longest hole in the state, and it’s all downhill, almost a freefall from the tee. It’s not vertiginous, only thrilling. But there are still a couple of streams to cross and ample bunkering by the green to negotiate, so it’s a tough one. Like other Vermont ski mountain/golf course resorts, Stratton has a full-fledged golf school that might make for a good reason to plan a trip here in the first place. Students end each day on the course, though in the evening it might be worth a visit to the appropriately-named Mulligans at Stratton Village for a brew and a bite. Some of the best par-3s in the state can be found a little further north at the Okemo Valley Golf Club, part of the Okemo Mountain Resort, and another Steve Durkee design. Durkee took full advantage of the rolling hills in creating an expansive heathland-style course. The scenery is always splendid here, but the autumn views in the mountains are downright stunning, particu38 •••••• www.golfoklahoma.org

larly on the downhill par-3 eighth, another sheer drop from tee to green. The course has some player-friendly bounces and funneling fairways, particularly on the second nine. But then comes 17, a real beauty and beast nestled at the base of the mountain in a picture postcard wetlands setting. Nice, until you realize you have a 190yard plus carry over the lily pond. Even if you don’t rinse one there’s still work to do on a green that is long, narrow and wildly sloped. Visitors to Vermont nearing Waterbury are virtually required to stop at the Ben & Jerry’s factory for a tour and some ice cream. It stops just short of a law, but if you’re in Waterbury you’re also just down the road from Stowe, and the brewery and visitors center of The Alchemist. That means you, too, can get on line and

try to score some Heady Topper, the double IPA that was ranked the best beer in the world for several years running. Bring some home and you have some heavy trading cachet with your craft beer drinking buddies. But you’ll want to book a room here at the Stowe Mountain Lodge, a luxury aerie nestled near Mt. Mansfield, the state’s highest peak, because that will give you access to the otherwise private Stowe Mountain Club Golf Course. The course naturally has eyepopping views of Mt. Mansfield and Spruce Peak, but it also means the track is a wild mountain ride. Designed by the late Bob Cupp, the course opened in 2007 and immediately impressed as a masterpiece of concision, jamming a 132 slope-rated course into a mere 6,041 yards. The tips only stretch the course to

6,411 yards but those unbalanced enough to attempt it will face a slope rating of 141. In either case, the gauntlet is down, the views are great, and there could well be a Heady Topper on hand post-round. Jay Peak is about as far north as one can go in Vermont before needing to show your passport. The four-season resort (with a year-round indoor waterpark) includes the Jay Peak Golf Course, which opened in 2006 and was fashioned by Canadian designer (and amateur great) Graham Cooke. Cooke also designed the fantastic private Country Club of Vermont in Waterbury (check your reciprocals!), and he brought a similar touch to the woods and slopes of Jay Peak. Golfweek has named it the top public course in the state for five of the last six years. I have to take this one on faith, since I confess this is the highest-profile Vermont course I have yet to play. I plan to tamp down the wood stove and rectify this next summer, so maybe we’ll meet out on the course. As long as you give me some strokes. SAN FRANCISCO – Northern California golf means scenic Pacific Ocean views, cool, sometimes downright cold summer temperatures (really) along with World Famous Pebble Beach Golf Links and its equally sky high prices. There is also the private multi-U.S. Open site Olympic Club in San Francisco and the ultra-exclusive SF (San Francisco) Club where only the best connections or wealth can get you to the first tee. But it would be a shame to overlook three renovated public golf treasures, Half Moon Bay, just 30 minutes south of the city, along

with TPC Harding Park and Presidio Golf Course, located in the heart of the City by the Bay as it’s known by locals. The threesome is equally scenic, equally challenging, but not as equally taxing on the green fee debit side. It’s public golf with a more public price. The Presidio was originally opened in 1895 as a crude nine-hole located on the military base next to the Golden Gate Bridge. For most of the next 80 years, it operated as a prime recreational option for officers and enlisted men at the Army base with a few limited civilian members. But when the base officially closed in the 1990s it was transferred to the National

Park system and named a National Historic Landmark. The par 72 layout is now open to all with the same hilly terrain and stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge through the fog for those who are fortunate enough to snare an early morning tee time. If you like playing golf in a green grass museum with art gallery spectacular views all around you, than The Presidio is your place to tee it up. Harding Park, on the shores of Lake Merced, opened in 1925 the design of architect Willie Watson, who also shaped the Olympic Club, and is likely the only course still in existence named for former President Warren G. Harding. It’s hosted the legends of golf for

nearly 90 years including San Francisco native and World Golf Hall of Fame member Ken Venturi who grew and learned to play here. But in the 1990s, it fell into disrepair and was almost abandoned, serving as a parking lot for a U.S. Open at Olympic Club. City golfers, led by Northern California golf figure Sandy Tatum, spearheaded a $16 million renovation project and it reopened in in 2003 as a prime public option. In 2009, it reached agreement with the PGA Tour and was officially renamed TPC Harding Park. Since then it’s hosted the Presidents Cup and the World Golf Championship World Match Play with the professional golfers back on the par 72 layout and amateurs still enjoying the huge stately eucalyptus trees and majestic views of the lake and the scenery most of the other weeks of the year. Golfers looking for a complete San Francisco-area resort experience, without the distance and expense of Pebble Beach and Carmel, will certainly enjoy Half Moon Bay, named for the crescent sized beach which sits below the golfside cliffs. Take the small two-lane road, 30 miles south of the SF Airport, off of Highway One to Miramontes Point and at the end of the short journey, you’ll find the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay Resort waiting. There are many rooms, including 22 suites, many with a direct ocean view and balconies to overlook the cliffs and ever-pounding waves. You can see the multiple fire pits near the main building which are handy at night as the brisk winds come off the ocean. During the day, when you want a spot to watch the golfers or beach walkers, you can observe often with a drink or the wonderfully unique hot chocolate bar nearby. Plus, the 36 holes of golf are equally vivid as well. The Old Course was opened in 1973, designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane. Its primary route through the large trees and homes in the area is a classic American par 72 parkland style. Its final hole, is probably the most spectacular of any here, the par 4 405-yard 18th which sits closer to the ocean of any of the other 35 at Half Moon Bay. You get a small preview as the par 3 17th green is close enough to the churning waters to hear and feel it, but the finishing hole is all ocean all the time. The Pacific water runs all along the right side of the layout with your nearest drop point in Hawaii. The left side is out of bounds, meaning a straight shot slightly downhill is the best, perhaps the only, safe option. The constant watery roar and the wonderful scenery is enough to distract any golfer with the hole finishing with a small, greatly undulated green right next to the hotel, guaranteeing you’ll have plenty of witnesses to your finishing pleasure or pain. The Ocean Course was opened in 1997 by famed architect Arthur Hills and as the name suggests features beach or ocean views on almost every hole. Hills’ par 72 layout features a Scottish links style design with the fairway playing firm and fast thanks to the nearly constant wind along with the wispy native grass and the lack of trees on the entire course. While the ocean is in clear sight, it’s not in play other than a pleasant visual distraction. The par 5 18th finishes on the other side of the hotel from the Old Course, but both are only steps away from the dining and watering holes to celebrate or commiserate your round at Half Moon Bay. The Conservatory is the more informal spot to dine within view of the 18th hole on The Old Course or savor a celebratory drink after your round. Navio is the more formal dinner spot on property with a private dining room. All public, all close to your landing spot, it’s quite the Northern California threesome for visiting golfers. outh Africa is a nation with more layers than it has official languages (11) and provinces (nine). This is a land that is considered one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth, and – given that palate – the golf offerings here range from sublime jungle, to mountainous, to coastal and to rich parkland surrounded by vineyards. The country is at the southernmost of the African continent and stretches from the south Atlantic on its western coastline to the Indian Ocean on the east. Those two oceans meet off the tip of South Africa somewhere between Cape Agulhas and Cape Point in the waters south of the Western Cape province. The premier track here, and the No. 1-rated layout in all of South Africa, is the world renowned Links course, the host of the historic 2003 Presidents Cup matches that were halved by the United States and the International Team. It’s a big-shouldered course, rising and falling across a set of grass-covered dunes and alongside and over a series of canals. The amazing thing is, like Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, the site was once flat enough to house an airstrip; all the mounding and movement on the course was manufactured during the construction, but one would think the Links are completely natural. The other two courses on site – called Outeniqua and Montagu – are unique in their own way and complementing one another perfectly while ensuring golfers have two very different experiences. Outeniqua (named after the nearby mountains) is regarded as an “easier” course, but don’t be fooled, as it has its fair share of challenges. And Montagu (so called because of the locallyknown Montagu Pass) is a delight to the senses as its routing stretches between mature trees, flower beds and water hazards that provide a colorful contrast to the landscape. Montagu is ranked as the 20th-best course in the country and is also a joy to play. Fancourt’s onsite national monument, the Manor House, was converted into a luxurious boutique hotel and the entire facility offers just 60 rooms, every one of them with some part of a golf course visible out of its expansive French doors. The resort has a holistic spa, four restaurants and many indoor and outdoor leisure facilities onsite and is as close to golf heaven as one can get and still be breathing. After two days at Fancourt, we got back on a jet for the 50-minute hop down the coast to Cape Town, which sprawls across

From our base at the opulent Taj Cape Town hotel in the city’s central business district, we headed back to the east on an hour’s drive to the shores of Bot River Lagoon and the Arabella Golf Resort. Peter Matkovich, an increasingly prolific South African course designer who started in the game as a professional on the European and South African tours, designed this course to take advantage of a

site that’s a combination of a coastal plain and lush jungle. Surrounded by the magnificent Kogelberg mountain range, the course is edged by wild fynbos, a shrub native to the Western Cape. Four holes lie peacefully next to a lagoon, where shots are sternly impacted by the wind, while the remainder of the track plays over a ridge on a relatively flat hinterland. Arabella is considered one of the top resort courses in South Africa and pairs well with the area’s other top-shelf tracks.

On a whim and a prayer, our group went off our planned itinerary, boarded a bus and drove for 90 minutes through the Hottentots Holland Mountains (which look like they could have been the site of the peaks seen in The Lord of the Rings movie series) into the Cape Vineyards and the town of Paarl, where we found the time and a spot on the busy tee sheet for nine holes at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Paarl Valley Golf Club. The course, part of the expansive Val de Vie Estate (which is internationally recog-

THE BEST IN CASUAL DINING Fancourt Montagu Golf Course. nized for its wine making and polo facilities), is surrounded by the majestic Simonsberg and Drakenstein Mountains and is annually voted as the best conditioned course in South Africa. Nicklaus’ work here is highlighted by the par-5 fourth hole, on which the golfer must cross a creek three times in route to a tricky and undulating putting surface. It’s considered one of the best three-shot holes in Africa, and a visit to the course and the city are almost worth the trip to South Africa by themselves. The final golf challenge of our trip was at the Steenberg Golf Estate, situated in the lush Constantia Valley, just 20 minutes from the center of Cape Town. Its routing, also fashioned by Matkovich, is nestled beneath the Constantiaberg Mountains and flanked by the vineyards of South Africa’s oldest wine farm. The backdrop of vineyards, gardens, forests and mountains provides the setting for this beautiful, exclusive course which is always in excellent condition with bentgrass greens and lush fairways. We were lucky enough to enjoy a tasting of a selection of Steenburg Vineyard finest wines at the luxurious onsite restaurant, providing the five golfers in our group the opportunity to toast our generous hosts from South Africa Tourism and reminisce on the wonderful time we had visiting their country and some of its best courses. South Africa shouldn’t be considered a once-in-a-lifetime vacation destination – I’m already planning another trip to the country to play more golf and make even more memories.
