Greats abound, rec golfers needed We are looking forward to another great year of covering golf in Oklahoma. While there is much to be excited about, there are a few concerns as well.

From a competitive standpoint, it’s simply astounding how many talented Oklahomans are playing at every level, from the PGA Tour (Kevin Tway, Taylor Gooch, Robert Streb) to the junior ranks.

Oklahoma universities have won the past two NCAA championships and OU and OSU will be in the hunt this spring when the event moves nearby to The Blessings in northwest Arkansas. This will be the last chance to see the tournament up close for a while unless you want to travel to Scottsdale, as it will move to Grayhawk Golf Club from at least 2020-22.

Oklahoma State returns a formidable team including state-grown starters Hayden Wood and Austin Eckroat, helping studs Matthew Wolff, U.S. Amateur champion Viktor Hovland and Zach Bauchou. OU counters with homegrown stars Quade Cummins of Weatherford and Brad Dalke of Norman and keep your eye out for the eventual emergence of Oklahomans Logan McAllister, Lane Wallace and Thomas Johnson.

Mori Rose continues to do an amazing job with the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour.

Another 25 players from that tour signed college scholarships for 2019. Go back to 2002 when the tour began and the number is a staggering 400.

So while competitive golf is healthy, all of us invested in the golf business need to continue to concentrate on developing and sustaining recreational players who can achieve a level of proficiency sufficient to enjoy the game for a lifetime, keeping our public and private courses healthy. There are far fewer of both in the state than there were 10 years ago and the number will shrink a bit more before an equilibrium between supply and demand is reached.

Many ideas to make the game appeal to younger golfers have been tried, including kick golf, larger holes and shorter courses.

Casual dress, music blaring from carts, greater use of technology in scoring and shot tracking, have all had a limited impact.

My generation fails to see how anyone of moderate coordination with a competitive spirit can fail to be entranced with the 8

game. There is always satisfaction in shooting a good score, or bashing a long drive, but there is so much more to love about golf.

Wind, temperature, terrain, water, trees and other factors create a never-ending series of opportunities to match your skill and creativity against the conditions. My round may be highlighted by hitting a 30-yard cut around a tree from a bare line onto a green. My hope is that we can get the younger casual golfers as hooked on the game’s endless small enjoyments as we have been for so many years.

As for the business of golf, it would be nice to take some steps in Oklahoma to be a bastion of common sense. Baby Boomera golfers are reaching retirement age and will be looking for more fixed income golf.

Younger players starting out are finding a mixed signal market in which new clubs are too expensive ($500 drivers!), rounds are often artificially cheap (looking at you, City of Tulsa) and the industry can’t quite seem to get its act together to meet the needs of today while growing the future base.

It makes no sense for certain municipal courses to vastly undercut others in a similar market, it only limits their funds for crucial maintenance and depresses prices throughout, which affects staff and maintenance.

Municipalities which haven’t really examined their desire to be in the business need to do so, because they make up at least 80 percent of public golf, there are only a few privately-owned public courses making it right now in Oklahoma. Spend the money to get your course in a condition in which it can be competitive and then demand your operators keep it that way with customer service, effective maintenance and competitive pricing. Don’t chase rounds with massive discounts.

As golfers, we have our own responsibilities to the game. As you’ve seen as various good layouts have closed (Coffee Creek, Silverhorn, Clary Fields to name a few), always chasing the next lowest discount green fee is short sighted if you have any interest in seeing your course not only survive but thrive. Be glad to pay market rates which are still well below most states. Take care of the course while you’re out there.

And share your love of the game with a millennial. It’s only the future of the game at stake.

Liquor law requires quick fix by jason sheffield

As of October 1, Oklahoma’s “Modernization of Liquor Laws” as approved by voters’ approval of State Question 792 in 2016, is in full effect.

While I am sure consumers are already enjoying the convenience of purchasing wine and strong beer in grocery stores and convenience stores, the unanticipated consequences of the new law need immediate attention from the Oklahoma legislature to eliminate what has become a serious business impediment for golf courses, country clubs, marinas and other businesses that boost Oklahoma’s tourism and recreation economy.

The current law defies logic – and unnecessarily uproots the traditional business operations of many existing Oklahoma businesses.

Under the previous law, for example, licensed golf clubs could serve golfers beer and mixed drinks with lunch, but could also sell golfers a six-pack for their golf cart ice chest as they headed out on the

mong the memorable moments in the 1996 movie “Tin Cup” was the exchange below between Roy McAvoy and his caddie, Romeo.

Well, we know how that movie ends. A little gust. A puff. A swirl. Do we have to read the tea leaves – or tree leaves – to figure out how much a given wind will affect a given golf shot? And what about altitude, heat or humidity? Or gravity?

Yes, gravity.

In Albuquerque, 5,000 feet above sea level, the task of quantifying golf’s environmental variables has vexed me for years.

4. ALTITUDE Aoyama prefaced his remarks with the caveat that “the effect will vary greatly depending on the golfer and what club is being used.” He offered a rule of thumb for shots that are well-struck, not thinned, chunked, heeled, or toed.

“As a starting point,” he wrote, “one can estimate the percentage distance increase (compared to sea level) by multiplying the elevation (in feet) by 0.00116.

“For example, at 5,000 feet elevation the increase is about 5,000 multiplied by 0.00116, which

equals 5.8 percent. Thus, a golfer who drives the ball 250 yards in Los Angeles might see an increase of 14.5 yards (5.8 percent of 250 yards) when playing in Denver.”

Aoyama also noted that at a higher elevation, a ball’s trajectory “is less influenced by lift, and thus has a ‘flatter’ shape and a more glancing impact with the ground ... This produces extra roll, which contributes to the increased distance but also makes it harder to hold the green, even though the spin is the same.”

The Beau Rivage is certainly one of the world’s classier casinos, the landscaping for the lobby and walkways along the shops is breathtaking and a brand new sports book has been added.

Some Beau Rivage fun facts: At 34 stories, it is the tallest building in Mississippi, yet part of it is built on five submerged barges covering seven acres of floor space, which originally made it legal for gambling operations. It has 18 kitchens and 10 restaurants, and the annual floral budget is in excess of $3 million. The fall plantings and decorations on our visit were stunning.

If staying at the Beau Rivage or any of the casinos in the area from Gulfport to

Biloxi, there are many other great options for golf. We played Shell Landing, a Davis Love III layout that cuts through dense forest and marshlands just a mile from the coast in Gautier, just outside Biloxi. A fun, playable course with great food in the clubhouse and a friendly staff.

My advice, having played in the region previously, is make sure The Preserve is part of any golf trip to the area. This Pate design cuts through native grass, pitcher plant bogs, swamps and forests and is one of my favorites anywhere for sheer beauty combined with a fun and interesting course.

The area also boasts a Jack Nicklaus course (Grand Bear), Arnold Palmer design in The Bridges and the historic Great Southern Golf Club, the state’s oldest course and built in 1908, among the 14 one can choose from.

Far north of the gulf in West Point, Miss.,

about 160 miles from Memphis and close to the Starkville home of Mississippi State University, is a hidden treasure of a golf destination that would make a great twoor three-day trip for golf purists.

Old Waverly, the beautiful 1988 Pate design with the clubhouse that feels 100 years older, is a stately old-style course that weaves through woods, lakes and streams with grace. It was created by George Bryan, who made his fortune in the family Bryan Foods meat business which was later acquired by Sara Lee Corporation.

Old Waverly was good enough to host the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open and will host the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 2019. It has great on-course villas for traveling golfers and had earned quite a reputation on its own. Then Bryan decided to up the ante by building v Oak Golf Club across the street.

Tulsa to its Perry Maxwell heritage, Mossy Oak makes it easy to see why Hanse is the most in-demand architect in the world today.

Visually, it is a pleasant enough stroll on a routing designed over an old dairy farm in the Mississippi black prairie. From the green on the par-3 sixth hole, you can see every flagstick on the course. Only a few ancient water oaks and sweet gum trees dot the property and Hanse left the property pretty much as he found it from a major earth-moving standpoint.

Hanse’s genius seeps out on the ground at Mossy Oak. Each hole has so much going on it is hard to describe. And not in terms of forced carries or blind shots. Just angles and mounding and shot options galore that will make you want to attack from one angle the first time you play it and try something completely different when you come back the next morning, or that afternoon.

“When people say they want to play it a different way the next time, we take that as a compliment,” Hanse said.

Except for the native blue stem rough being too high and too difficult to locate a ball in, Hanse is pleased with the way Mossy Oak has turned out.

“I think those are some of the better green complexes we’ve ever built,” he said.

“The ground game aspect is such a fun characteristic of that course. Also how you control you ball on slopes, whether you go in with a cut or a draw. The whole feel of the place is pretty cool, to be able to stand on that sixth green and see every other green on the course.”

Mossy Oak could be transported to an

ocean-side somewhere and be hailed as a great links course, but really it’s a modern vision of what inland golf can be with some imagination and verve. It has wonderful four-bedroom condos right on the course so a group could go and play both Mossy Oak and Old Waverly for three days, never be bored and certainly never go hungry if you include at least one meal a day in the Old Waverly clubhouse.

f any Oklahomans make their way 50 miles north of Denver to try the new Colorado TPC Course in 2019, they’ll get a warm welcome from General Manager Larry Collins.

Collins is very familiar with the Sooner state, as daughters Chelsey and Brooke both played at the University of Oklahoma.

Fortunately Collins won’t have to be taking any time off to watch college events in the near future, because getting the first course in Colorado to open since 2009 up and running has kept him quite busy.

The public will have access with green fees starting at $175. What they’ll find is an interesting layout built to resemble a Scottish links, complete with wide fairways, stacked sod bunkers, rolling terrain, few trees and overlooks 1,500 acres of water which only comes into play on eight holes.

The holes wander out 2.5 miles before returning, so don’t expect to stop at the clubhouse at nine. Designed by Arthur Schaupeter, a 1990 Colorado graduate, the course is on what Collins terms “a beautiful piece of land. You have no idea how much character the course will have until you get out on it. It will have 18 holes that will garner your attention.”

TPC Colorado has three risk-reward par4s and a Biarritz green on the par-3 second.

Of the 66 bunkers, 33 are the stacked sod variety, seven of those on the 12th hole alone.

WHERE TO PLAY

Growing up in central Ohio in the Woody Hayes era, all we knew about “that state up north” was how badly we wanted to win a certain football game every November.

Not being much of a traveling golfer in those days, the joys of playing in the deep woods and cool summer breezes in northern Michigan were unknown. We knew Bigfoot sightings were common way up in the wilds of the Upper Peninsula, but just below that

one of the n at ion’s best golf destinations went unexplored.

Better late than never, we’ve been making up for lost time, first with a delightful family vacation to the area near Traverse City and more recently with a golf tour of the Gaylord Golf Mecca highlighted by the amazing Treetops Resort. Of course, Treetops was just a ski resort back when this writer actually lived in Ohio, so hopefully some of our ignorance can be forgiven.

Not anymore. Beginning with the Robert Trent Jones Sr. Masterpiece Course in 1983, it has expanded to include five signature courses, all with magnificent views and levels of conditioning and vastly different levels of difficulty to make sure every golfer is either pushed to the extreme or just out for an enjoyable walk in the woods.

The Masterpiece reflects all that is notable about RTJ courses. They are fun to play when you’re in a mood for a challenge and

not worried about protecting your handicap. Any par is a good score and birdies are rare finds. Although the terrain rises and falls dramatically, it seems that many of the second shots are uphill to elevated greens guarded by snarling bunkers. On the 11th hole, after one of the best drives I hit all week, I found myself on a downhill slope trying to hit a shot to a green 40 yards above me with the pin right behind a large bunker fronting the green. Not happening.

Fortunately, as tough as the Masterpiece is, the rest of the resort is just as beautiful but far more playable. The Signature Course, the first championship design

by Rick Smith, was far more accessible though still plenty challenging. Some of the elevation change worked for the benefit of the average golfer and the landing areas were more forgiving. We also were fortunate to play the nine-hole Threetops, the famous par-3 course where Lee Trevino won a million bucks in ESPN’s par-3 shootout in 2001. The majority of these holes play dramatically downhill and it is

The resort also has the staggeringly beautiful Premier course by Tom Fazio and a second Rick Smith design called Tradition. Many golfers will spend their entire trip just playing courses at Treetops, but they’ll miss out on a lot of other charming courses near Gaylord, which boasts 15 golf courses near the town of just over 4,000 full-time residents.

We sampled quite a few on this trip. Our first day we played 18 holes at Black Lake Golf Club followed by nine holes at Gaylord Golf Club. Black Lake is owned and operated by the United Auto Workers and is in a serene setting abounding with wildlife and has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

Designed by Rees Jones in a very natural state with no mounds or other hint of artificiality, and carved from tall pines and hardwoods with plenty of streams and ponds, Black Lake on this day was playing long as the fairways were soaked from an overnight rain. The clubhouse boasts a spacious restaurant with an outdoor deck for enjoying the summer days. The course also has excellent practice facilities and was a great way to begin our Michigan golf adventure.

Charming most aptly describes Gaylord Golf Club, which moved to its present location in 1975 but feels 50 years older in its gently moving fairways and immaculate greens with more than a bit of break to them. It was so enjoyable that most of the group was eager to play the back nine, but a dinner at the Alpine Tavern & Eatery W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

in downtown Gaylord awaited and that is not to be missed.

The next morning found our group at Michaywe Pines, a course owned and operated by the local residents and run by head professional Judy Mason. A very

scenic, classic, low-lying tree-lined routing with no gimmicks but plenty of challenge. This day also included an afternoon round at The Loon at The Loon Golf Resort, which boasts three courses although the other two are a few miles away. Rain

Besides trees on three sides and wetlands in front, nothing tough about the closing hole at The Natural. and lightning limited our stay there to nine holes but from the outset it was quite a ride and would love to get back for a full round.

The resort also offers The Lakes and The Ridge courses and the Summit Grill with the most delicious bruschetta and plenty of Michigan craft beers.

fter delaying for too many years, some friends and I finally made the trip to Scotland in the summer of 2017 to play some of the great links courses in the world, highlighted by such venues as St. Andrews, Royal Dornoch, Cruden Bay, Gullane, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, North Berwick and Royal Aberdeen.

It was an all-star lineup of championship links on the eastern coast and we were thoroughly smitten with the experience.

So much that we decided to return in 2018 to see if the Irish links courses were as impressive.

The answer is yes, and stop asking me which was my favorite. They are all magnificent.

I have other friends who say, if you’re going to spend that much money on a golf trip, why not just go to Florida or somewhere where it’s warm, little wind and you can ride in a cart?

All I can say is I’m sorry you would even ask that. While I enjoy those kind of trips as much as the next golfer, the links ventures are something else entirely, a more elemental and pure golf experience where every day you battle unfamiliar terrain, shifting winds, rain, wild conditions and do so while navigating dunes and rolling ground that allows for the ultimate creativity in shotmaking.

For this trip, we again relied on the expertise of veteran links golf guide Jim Mills of Bartlesville in setting up the itinerary. We flew to Dublin, played nearby St. Anne’s, Royal Dublin and the European Club, then began moving up the east coast toward Northern Ireland, where in succession we played Castlerock, Royal Portrush and Portstewart before returning to Dublin

for a final round at Portmarnock before departure.

Each magical in its own way. And I know there are many more of equal or greater lineage that we missed on this trip.

To single out a few highlights: The Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush, a 1929 Harry Colt design, is the only course in Ireland to have hosted The Open Championship, won in 1951 by Max Faulkner, and it will do so again in 2019. How it will hold up to the onslaught of 350-yard drives remains to be seen, but it, along with winds and rain, had no trouble shrugging off our minor slings and arrows.

land the ball on the greens if you want the ball to remain there and not roll into some cataclysmic position from which there is little hope. The opening stretch was beautiful but confounding and we closed in gathering dark, pelted by sideways rain.

Making par on the final two par-4s, both times with driver, fairway wood, is a memory I’ll cherish.

More player friendly and a spectacular visual treat with its massive dunes and views of the Atlantic and the River Bann, The Strand Course at Portstewart Golf Club was ranked near the top by all members of our trip.

On your way to the course be sure to check out Giant’s Causeway, the unique geologic formation which many of my age set recognize as the backdrop to the cover of Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy album, as well as tour the Old Bushmills Distillery, where they have been distilling fine Irish Whiskey since 1608.

Fortunately they allowed us to return in the afternoon, where the gusts had diminished to under 30 mph or so. When we got to the first green the flag was lying down with the tip still in the hole, completely bent sideways.

As the winds died a bit and the late afternoon sun glinted across, Portmarnoch revealed itself and the back nine was as enjoyable as any round we played. Charles

Darwin once called the final five holes the most fair test of golf in the world and he may have been on to something.

Certainly no expert after two of these sojourns, but would recommend you do them while you can still comfortably walk 18 holes a day. Those who go earlier in the year will have sufficient light to play 27 or 36 a day if desired but those days are behind me, we all preferred to repair to a friendly

pub with tall glasses of Guinness after our rounds.

Near Dublin, we stayed in the charming town of Malahide at the Grant Hotel and it caters to U.S. golfers. Leave time to spend at least a night or two exploring the many parks, great restaurants and nightlife of Dublin.

orld-class golf and tourism opportunities abound in England’s county of Kent, located southeast of London.

That’s the best way to summarize my trip to Kent, where I played eight rounds of golf and visited two castles, a cathedral, and

Britain’s oldest brewery plus had dinner in an old pub. It was an amazing trip that got better by the day.

While in Kent, three of the rounds were on championship links courses, which have all hosted past (British) Open Championships – Royal St. George’s (the 2020), Royal Cinque

Ports Golf Club (hosted in 1909 and 1920) and Prince’s Golf Club (hosted in 1932). A fourth course that I played –at Littlestone Golf Club – is also a championship links and has served as a qualifier for The Open.

My trip through Kent started at the Hever Castle Golf Club in Edenbridge. Built

I spent my first night in Kent at Hever Castle – specifically in the Pippin Room of the Anne Boleyn Wing.

After breakfast the next day, I enjoyed a tour of the castle and its majestic gardens.

Spend at least a day there. Enjoy the fragrance from the 4,000-plus roses in the Rose Garden and don’t get lost in the 100-yearold Yew Maze.

My next round was at the Leeds Castle Golf Club, a nine-hole layout in nearby Maidstone. Spend the night at the Stable Courtyard Bed & Breakfast, located next to the 900-year-old Leeds Castle, known as “the loveliest castle in the world.” Leeds Castle and its vast moat sit adjacent to the fifth, sixth and seventh holes of the golf club. The view of Leeds Castle from the fifth tee is stunning. I would be remiss if I didn’t insist that you eat dinner at the Castle View Restaurant, which provides spectacular views of Leeds Castle.

After exploring rural Kent, it was time for coastal golf -- 18 holes in the morning at Littlestone Golf Club near Romney Marsh and 18 holes in the afternoon at Royal Cinque Ports, close to Deal. Littlestone, which overlooks the nearby English Channel, was one of the final qualifying venues for the 2011 Open. This course is delightful and demanding. It offers stunning views over Pegwell Bay and the English Channel. The tallest and deepest bunker in Great Britain is located on the fourth hole at Royal St. George’s, which

Playing there with a caddie was an unforgettable experience. Before the round, caddiemaster Sean Meleady said our two-ball would play ‘millionaire’s golf.’ By that, he meant nobody would be in front of us and nobody would be behind us. He was right.

Throughout the round, my caddie, Gary, who has been affiliated with RSG for 50 years, shared his advice and stories about the course. The overall experience was

one of my most memorable rounds. While standing on the 18th tee, Gary had one final message -- “Mike, you need a (par) 4 to win The Open.” I did as I was told and made my par, but, sadly, there was no Claret Jug for me, but I felt like the Champion Golfer of the Year.

Prince’s, which co-hosted the British Amateur in 2013 and 2018, boasts 27 holes in three nine-hole loops: Shore, Dunes and Himalayas. Each loop has its own unique characteristics. The most famous of Prince’s

many revetted bunkers is the now-famous Sarazen Bunker, which sits next to the ninth hole of the Himalayas.

War historian golfers should be aware that Bloody Point is one of the geographic locations at Prince’s. It’s so named because it’s “believed to be the site of a vicious and bloody naval battle in AD 851,” according to a sign that sits on the golf course.

While in Kent, make sure you visit Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest Christian structures in England. The medieval city of Canterbury oozes charm and quaintness.

After Sandwich, the next stop should be the North Foreland Golf Club near Broadstairs.

Founded in 1903, this clifftop gem has many views over the English Channel. Breathtaking is the best way to describe the views of the Channel from many of the holes at North Foreland.

When you have an off-day from golf, travel to Faversham for a tour of Britain’s oldest brewer, the Shepherd Neame Brewery. Your final golf experience in Kent should include a trip to the exclusive London Golf Club, located in northern Kent. The club has two

18-hole golf courses – the Heritage and the International. The Heritage was designed

by Jack Nicklaus and the International was created by Ron Kirby, under the Jack Nicklaus Design banner. The London Golf Club has hosted numerous European PGA Tour events.

Both courses are a true treat and provide wonderful views of the Kent countryside.

While in Kent, another charming place to spend the night should be an old-style seaside hotel, such as The Marine Hotel in Whitstable. It’s clean, comfortable, and quiet. The views out to sea, while enjoying a Full English Breakfast, are nothing short of jawdropping.
