Significant new clubs for 2022 by ed travis

s the golf equipment industry ramps up for the 2022 season, a couple of things are very different and both are driven by the worldwide pandemic. First, in a sharp reversal of a previous trend, clubmakers and courses are benefiting from more rounds being played. Early in the battle with COVID it became obvious the game was a perfect antidote for “cabin fever” and attracted current and past players. In addition, there was a dramatic increase of new participants covering the demographic spectrum of men, women and juniors. Second, the annual kickoff of the golf equipment industry, the PGA Merchandise Show, after being held virtually in 2021, was back in Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center. However, none of the major clubmakers exhibited. Perhaps, having learned from last year’s virtual show there was less need to spend the millions required for display and staffing costs, the continuing COVID restrictions tipped the balance. Despite the prospect of further health restrictions, increasing inflation and ongoing supply chain uncertainties, makers continue to announce new models – some incorporating interesting or unique technologies. Having all this in mind and as we do each year, Golf Oklahoma has researched the latest offerings for our readers and below are descriptions of those we feel are the most significant. Adams Golf Tight Lies Fairway Woods & Hybrids The original Adams Tight Lies hit the market in 1995 with a unique trapezoidal sole to aid getting the ball airborne from even the most difficult lies and has been updated for the latest introduction, including a sole slot to improve ball speed and a larger face with 14 percent more area. Business booms for Tulsa net maker by ken mac leod

esides spending more time on the course, the pandemic-induced golf boom led to a lot of folks wanting to spend time practicing at home. Swinging in the back yard is one thing. To actually hit balls safely, you need a sturdy net and frame. And the backyard boom has meant big business for Roy Hanks, general manager and project coordinator for Cimarron Sports, which has been making custom golf and baseball nets at its east Tulsa location just off I-44 for decades. “Our home sales skyrocketed in 2020,” Hanks said. “And our company revenues in the last three years have doubled, going from $1.9 million to just under $4 million.” Not only has the demand for home nets jumped, but Hanks has been busy expanding the company’s reach on a local level into the many practice facilities being built by Oklahoma high schools and colleges as well as serving long-time corporate clients such as GolfTec stores nationwide. “We don’t have salesmen, we have me,” Hanks said. “I deal with about 150 local athletic directors and coaches. Right now, it’s still about 75 percent baseball and 25 percent golf, but the golf segment is growing.” Cimarron Sports has recently created custom nets for LaFortune Park, the indoor teaching center at Oral Roberts, the new indoor

buying a booth at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando in 1984 and advertising his services as a golf course photographer. And that led to shooting over 1,800 courses in 45 countries, amassing over 5 million frequent flyer miles and a lifetime of adventure. From 1985 to 2008, Klemme would average nearly 100 days a year shooting courses across the globe, in mountains, deserts, jungles, beaches, wherever the fast-growing game was springing up next. The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, slowed the pace of new course development, and the real estate crash of 2008 virtually ended it, as courses being developed in the U.S. plunged from about 500 annually to where far more were closing than opening. Klemme shifted gears seamlessly, devoting months to the hardcover book Celebrating Oklahoma, published in 2007 to help mark the state’s centennial. He developed a system for doing large scale photography and artwork for use in office buildings and sports complexes. Now, at age 69, Klemme is not as interested in jetting around the world, but still loves to shoot golf courses and is available to courses in Oklahoma who would like to update their images. He recently shot The Territory in Duncan, Southern Hills and others and will work with courses that are not in that ballpark. “I just love being around young people and feeling their energy for all these projects,” Klemme said. The keys to a successful shoot remain the same. “It’s all about light and it’s all about drama,” Klemme said. “If you’re not capturing drama, it’s not going to be a good picture.” Klemme will do his scouting in the afternoon, then try to capture as many of the key images in the soft evening light as possible. Closing in on nearly 2,000 courses, here are his top five with a comment on each. Shooting those were among his best days. The worst was an incident while shooting the Fairmont Springs Golf Resort in Banff, Canada, when a lift collapsed, dropping him 30 feet into a rocky river bed, leaving him with cracked ribs and a bruised kidney but fortunate it wasn’t much worse. Klemme is still willing to go above and beyond for his clients, if not on a shaky lift. After many trips to Ireland and Scotland in the past, it is incredible how much this place looks like the UK. You have to pinch yourself to be reminded that you are indeed in Wisconsin and you are looking at a lake, not an ocean. Incredible.

4 THE ARNOLD PALMER SIGNATURE COURSE AT PENINSULA PAPAGAYO, COSTA RICA The Four Seasons Hotel at Peninsula Papagayo and this wonderful golf course should be on the hit list of every avid golfer. Expensive, yes. But the course itself and the views of 300’ cliffs as far as you can see to the north and south of this peninsula are worth the $$$$.

3 AUGUSTA NATIONAL I was able to photograph this venue twice the week prior to The Masters. The best part was being out on the course at sunrise before any maintenance staff or players. There are many things in life that you aspire to experience your entire life and ultimately end up with disappointment. Not Augusta National. It is much better in person that you ever imagined.

2 KAWANA RESORT, FUJI, JAPAN Kawana is an 18hole resort about an hour south of Tokyo by bullet train. The courses are situated on the side of a sloping mountain that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The views are incredible along with the gardens that wind through the courses. 16

One of the greatest experiences of my photographic life was photographing Cypress Point (twice). It’s basically three different golf courses. Six holes of parkland, eight holes wandering amongst the cypress trees and rolling sand dunes, and four holes along the beautiful California coast.

Scenic resorts, great food abound in Tucson

TUCSON — Ask any savvy traveler what the secret to a successful trip is, and there’s a very good chance he or she will say of the destination they are visiting that you need “lots of local knowledge.” That is especially true when it comes to golf trips, where courses and resorts/hotels

are often booked based on their popularity or reputation because — let’s face it — locals rule. Tucson is the hidden gem of Arizona golf, where it pays huge dividends to have lots of knowledge prior to your trip. Sure, most people know “the Old Pueblo,” as it is affectionately called by the locals, is the gateway to the Old West, and that the

notorious cowboy town of Tombstone lies just south of the city. But did you know that Tucson’s modern-day gunfights are held these days on 30-plus golf courses that encircle its metropolitan area, with another dozen or so all within a one-hour drive? Rick Price, who has earned the nickname “Mr. Tucson Golf” for his 30-plus years of growing the game in the city he loves, said

the future could not be brighter for Arizona’s second-largest metropolis, which is located at 2,500 to 3,000 feet above sea level with a population that just tops a million. “There’s no doubt that golf is way more affordable in Tucson than, say, Phoenix or Scottsdale,” said the easygoing Price, who has been the head pro or director of golf at six area courses, including the highly regarded Omni Tucson National Golf Resort, The Gallery at Dove Mountain and The Views Golf Club of Oro Valley, where he currently runs the show. “I guess from a tourist standpoint, we’re not as crowded as the Phoenix metro area, which gives us more of a laidback vibe. One real positive is that the greater Tucson area has such a variety of courses; there’s very little sameness. And our best courses, are high-end courses — at least a dozen of them or more — and they definitely can compete with the best of the PhoenixScottsdale. Plus, we’ve got better views with all of these mountains around us.” Price certainly does at his semi-private golf course, as The Views is carved right out of the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains, with killer backdrops in every direction. The Views, which has a $110 green fee in peak season, is fairly typical of Tuc-

son golf, which ranges from $90 to $200. By comparison, the big hitters in PhoenixScottsdale range from $185 to $450, the last price being the new number at the TPC Scottsdale, where the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open is held every year. Tucson National, where the PGA Tour once upon a time contested the Tucson Open (1945-2006), today is the host of the Cologuard Classic on the Champions Tour, and is one of those diverse courses that Price mentioned. “I’m probably prejudiced because I was director of golf there for six years, but the championship course at the National makes everyone who plays it happy. It’s just a walk in a pristine golf park — with its big, tree-lined fairways. It’s not really desert golf at all,” said Price, a former University of Arizona golfer who once produced a golf magazine and radio show called “Golf Arizona,” as well as served as director of the Southern Southwest Section of the PGA, and as a golf coach at Pima Community College. “But Tucson also has all of these highly regarded desert links like Ventana Canyon (36 holes of Tom Fazio golf), La Paloma (27 holes of Jack Nicklaus golf), Arizona

National (18 holes of Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf), Starr Pass (27 holes of Robert Cupp and Craig Stadler golf) the Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain (27 holes by Nicklaus), El Conquistador (36 holes by the late Greg Nash, as well as a nine-hole executive) and Sewailo at Casino Del Sol (18 holes by Notah Begay).” That’s 189 holes of really good golf to go with some mid-priced products that offer excellent conditions, tremendous service and lots of different looks, too. That list is headed by The Views, formerly a private club built by Nash called Sun City Vistoso, Crooked Tree (designed by Lee Trevino), Del Lago, Forty Niner, Quarry Pines (actually built in an old quarry near the suburb of Marana) and SaddleBrooke. In addition, there are four solid municipal golf courses that cost less than $75, led by Randolph North, which was designed by William “Billy” Bell, the same architect who created Torrey Pines in San Diego and Papago in Phoenix. And don’t forget the other muni at Randolph Park, Dell Urich. DESTINATIONS Just hop in your rental car and take I-19 south for 30 miles to the retirement community of Green Valley, where courses like San Ignacio, Canoa Hills and the Country Club of Green Valley will more than make up for the cost of your gas with a green fee under $100 and an outstanding desertmountain landscape of golf. Go 15 minutes further south down the I-19, and you can tee it up on 27 holes of scenic/serene golf at Tubac Golf Resort, one of the movie sets for the golf flick “Tin Cup.” The legendary Red Lawrence, “the Desert Fox” and the same architect that created famed Desert Forest in Carefree, built the first 18 at Tubac back in 1960, Kavanaugh added the third nine 10 years ago in what certainly is an idyllic setting in the heart of the Santa Cruz River Valley. Don't try to walk it. would sooner talk golf. “Golf paves the way, but recreational sports opportunities in Tucson also have become robust year-round,” Hansen said. “The Loop, which is shared use for walkers, runners, skaters, horseback riders and cyclists, was huge, as is the El Tour de Tucson (bike race) that draws 9,000 cyclists in November. “Nearby Mount Lemon (a ski resort) now has a 19-mile Honeybee Canyon Loop that is one of seven mountain-biking trails that stretch 84 miles at altitudes from 3,000 to 7,000 feet. And the running community also has ignited, featuring 24 annual events, from the socially festive Meet Me Downtown 5K to the 53rd annual Saguaro National Park Labor Day 8-mile run/walk. “But make no mistake, it’s golf that continues to swing Tucson’s sports economy,”

Hansen said. Oh, yes, and one other thing, Hansen added. “We do have some unbelievable Mexican restaurants that go a long way in bringing people to town. They bill it as `23 miles of Mexican.’ But it’s just not the quantity of offerings (over 50 cantinas), but the quality and diverse backgrounds of the restaurants and chefs.” Yes, word has gotten out that the best place to go out after a round of golf in the Old Pueblo is those 23 miles designated by the city as an international gastronomical epicenter for those who like their tacos and margaritas. Restaurants such as El Guero Canelo, BK Carne Asada & Hot Dogs and BOCA Tacos y Tequila are superb. But there is one celebrated cantina that can’t be touched — the 100-year-old W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

Starr Pass Resort and Spa. El Charro Cafe. Along those lines, El Charro Cafe’s current chef, Carlotta Flores, has yet another local story that might pique your curiosity about Tucson. “We still serve many of the same foods and recipes that my Great Aunt Monica (Flinn) served her customers when she opened the restaurant in 1922,” said Flores, who has won more national and international awards than you can list. “And, yes, Great Aunt Monica invented

nights on the property, there are only scattered openings. The ubiquitous nature of the Omicron variant and its inexorable spread has only complicated the picture as far as remote travel goes. So what’s a golfer to do? Most of us have a pod of golfers we feel safe around — a foursome or three — and there’s no reason a tight traveling squad couldn’t find a safe haven for a few days of golf at a resort offering multiple courses and a central accommodation geared to minimum interaction and reasonable dining options. Other than Bandon or the distant Pebble Beach, we’ve picked five pretty obvious choices for the reasons mentioned above, and if you’re a long driver, you can motor to these destinations in less than a day. They’re also all pretty much bucket list choices to begin with. If you haven’t played at these resorts, it’s a good time to start. But let the Bandon Dunes story be your motto: Book now, play later. Destination Kohler, Wisconsin: Recent word is that Kohler is filling up fast this year, too, but you might be able to strike a deal for some of the standalone cabins that add to the anything-you-need W W W.GOLFOKL AHOMA.ORG

aspect of this peerless golf destination. It’s not often you’d want to go to a golf resort for the bathroom fixtures alone, but that’s almost the case here, since Kohler has an almost 130-year history of excellence in WC design. To say the spa here is also of bucket list quality is a redundancy. But then there’s the golf: Whistling Straits, one of Steve Stricker’s favorite courses — the site where his team won the 43rd Ryder Cup — not to mention hosting three PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open. This masterpiece is but one of four Pete Dye courses at the resort, accompanying the Irish Course at Whistling Straits and the Meadows and River Valley courses at Blackwolf Run. And you will want to play them all. The newest test is The Baths of Blackwolf Run, a 10-hole, par-3 short course designed by Chris Lutzke and Kohler’s Executive Chairman Herb Kohler. Holes range from 60 to 160 yards and unsurprisingly water comes into play at four strategic “baths” along the way. There’s also a twoacre putting course with varied routings of 18 to 27 holes. Big Cedar Lodge, Branson, Missouri: Branson has been featured in these pages before, and not without reason. It just

The seventh hole at famed Pinehurst No. 2. keeps getting better and better, a veritable Disneyland of golf. The deal was really already sealed with the plethora of golf and other outdoor sporting attractions beckoning in the startlingly scenic Ozarks venue, along with Branson’s multiple entertain-

ment options. But the recent addition of the Tiger Woods (and Beau Welling)- designed Payne’s Valley course really gilded the lily. Payne’s Valley is Tiger’s first course actually opened to the public — intrigue enough

COVID TR AVEL — but it was also named the Best New Public Course in Golf Digest’s 2021 roundup, alluding to its great visual drama while remaining invitingly playable. There are four other courses under the Big Cedar umbrella, and the impresario behind it all, Johnny Morris of Bass Pro Shops fame, didn’t stint on name designers — Ozarks National (Coore and Crenshaw), Buffalo Ridge (Tom Fazio), the par-3 Top of the Rock course (Jack Nicklaus), and the 13-hole par-3 Mountain Top course (Gary Player), which has an adjacent one-acre Tom Watson-designed putting course. The five Big Cedar tracks account for half of Branson’s 10 playing venues, all close to one another and all public (LedgeStone and Branson Hills, like Ozarks National and Buffalo Ridge, ranked by Golfweek in the state’s top 10). Big Cedar has a variety of accommodation options, including stand-alone cabins that house from 5-to-10 people. Boyne Resorts, Michigan: The Cottages at Bay Harbor are a good place to headquarter when setting out to plunder the bounty of golf available from the three golf properties operated by Boyne in the north of Michigan’s lower peninsula. In case you weren’t paying attention when we suggested you “Add Boyne to bucket list” in the Oct.-Nov. 2021 issue, please review, and remember that the golf (and ski) operator has 10 tracks available for play. The standout is the Links/Quarry routing at c, but all have appeal and all are always in immaculate shape. The courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Arthur Hills, William New-

The courses in Boyne and nearby Gaylord have made Michigan a prime destination for summer travel. comb and the ghost of Donald Ross — the Donald Ross Memorial course replicates a few Ross greatest hits, holes from Seminole, Oakland Hills, Royal Dornoch, Pinehurst No. 2 and others. Pinehurst, North Carolina: Frankly, a U.S. golfer’s life is incomplete without a visit to Pinehurst. If there were nothing else in town than the Donald Ross masterpiece Pinehurst No. 2 course, scene of so much U.S. Open drama, that would suffice for a pilgrimage. But there’s much more, in a U.S. town as devoted to golf as, say, St. Andrews in Scotland. Both Pinehurst Resort and the Village were named National Historic Landmarks in 1996. There are nine courses under the Resort’s aegis, a 10th rumored, and the Pinehurst Brewing Company is right on the resort grounds. Case closed. Yet there is still more, much of it cour-

Near the third green and fourth tee of The Cradle, an open-air bar and fire-pit area, Cradle Crossing, opened last May. The central Carolina Hotel is an evervibrant throwback to Southern elegance, but there are a variety of accommodations available, as well as talk of a new 34-room hotel called The Lodge at Pinehurst. Separate villas and condos remain ideal for groups. Streamsong, Bowling Green, Florida: Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, set on 16,000 acres of former phosphate mines, the Streamsong Resort is surely one of the great reclamation projects imaginable, particularly if you like golf and enjoy some of Tom Doak’s, Bill Coore and Ben

Crenshaw’s and Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner’s best work — the Blue, Red and Black Courses, respectively. The surroundings suggest a page out of central Florida’s early history, and indeed a copy of Patrick D. Smith’s regional classic novel “A Land Remembered” is in every room of the 216-room lodge. But the lodge itself seems to have landed on the spot from outer space, a brazenly futuristic hunk of architecture designed by Alberto Alfonso. Players will take it all in stride, as all three of the courses are ranked in the top 10 of Golf Digest’s most recent Best Courses to play in the state list, and that includes private courses. Actually, you must take it in stride, as all three courses are walking-only, unless a medical condition warrants otherwise. Hanse and Wagner, surely the busiest design team working these days, also drew up the plans for the resort’s sevenhole short course (The Roundabout) and the 1.2-acre putting course (The Gauntlet). Easiest walks, just as much fun. But if your dogs do get tired at Streamsong, the fishing is pretty good, too. Tom Bedell travels worldwide from Vermont, and would happily return to any of these resorts to search for his errant golf shots.

The Tribe, which had been talking about building a course for several years, asked the developer to consider building one on its land instead. “They formed a partnership, completed all the necessary planning and financing, and we got to work,” Spann said. “It was all rather fortuitous. we’d go to for adult refreshments at the end of the workday.” The back nine opened in the fall of 2002 and the full 18 in 2003, attracting nearuniversal acclaim and earning its share of coverage in national golf publications. Black Mesa, where Spann estimates he moved just 200,000 cubic meters of dirt, half of which was to create the irrigation pond and practice range, fit right in with the growing number of small-production, lay-of-the-land courses that were fast becoming popular. The five-star reviews kept coming for 10 years or so, but they began to disappear when management and maintenance issues sprang up around 2013-14. The story behind the horribly dark period when the course suffered, during which dandelions spread across the fairways and the greens more or less died, is a long and complex one, suffice to say the goodwill between the Tribe and developer, who leased and operated the course, all but dried up. It was an unfortunate business that would need significant re-investment and new personnel to put right. Laurie Meredith moved from Towa GC to become Director of Golf Operations in April 2018, joining Tom Velarde, who has

been at the course since Day 1, in the pro shop. It was an important hire for sure, but perhaps even more significant was the choice of Aaron Sunderlin as the new superintendent. Sunderlin, an Ohio State turfgrass graduate who had worked at two Kansas City clubs before accepting the job at Black Mesa, quickly saw the irrigation system had serious electrical issues that rendered it thoroughly unreliable and that the course’s pumpstation was likewise failing badly. “On top of that, we had a hard-working crew but one that lacked experience, direction and vision,” Sunderlin said. The amount of work necessary to get the course back in shape seemed overwhelming at first, so Sunderlin listed his priorities. “The first step was solving the plethora of electrical faults and problems with the decoder-style irrigation system,” he said. “With that out of the way, I focused on developing my staff and then we began work on repairing the putting surfaces.” All that obviously took time, but Sunderlin eventually felt comfortable continuing the bunker project that had begun before his arrival. Black Mesa had a lot of bunkers too many

perhaps for a player-friendly public course and way too many for a course looking to cut costs without spoiling the experience. “So we filled a lot of them in, probably over 100,” Sunderlin said. And those bunkers that remained were renovated. Thanks to Sunderlin and his team’s Herculean effort, good, clean and plentiful water from the Rio Grande (“We are permitted to use this water by the federal government,” Sunderlin said. “But we use significantly less than we’re permitted.”), Black Mesa is back to something like its best and rising swiftly up the rankings. Its return to prominence has been so dramatic, Golf Magazine included it inside the country’s top 100 public-access courses last year, as did prestigious British publication Golf World. Together with Sandia Casino and Resort in Albuquerque, the Jep Wille-designed Taos GC, 45 miles northwest; newly renovated Paako Ridge, 30 minutes outside Albuquerque; the University of New Mexico’s genuinely tough Championship Course designed by Red Lawrence; and a handful of other outstanding courses, Black Mesa promises to be the highlight of a golf trip to New Mexico you really should take sooner rather than later.

The 18-hole golf course is owned by the City of Flowood, a suburb just east of Jackson. It is operated by Troon Golf, with Blake Hatfield serving as head golf professional and clubhouse manager. The 200-acre golf course originally opened in 1998 and was designed by Roy Case. At the time The Refuge was considered one of the top public facilities in Mississippi. Case’s original routing went out-andback and featured tight, tree-lined fairways. Course critiques centered mostly from a playability aspect. Stray shots were hard to find and many golfers just abandoned their golf balls rather than enter the dense underbrush. And because the front nine didn’t return to the club-

here’s plenty of outstanding public-access golf in Mississippi, stretching from Old Waverly and Mossy Oak in West Point to a just a tad south at Dancing Rabbit in Philadelphia and then all the way to the Gulf Coast. However, missing for much of the past four years was a destination-type venue in Jackson, the state’s capital. That changed in the spring of 2021 when The Refuge reopened after an extensive renovation. Now, city and state officials are counting on the revamped course and its accompanying new $50-million hotel complex to fill the void. The two entities go hand in hand, although The Refuge golf course is akin to

house, there were few nine-hole rounds played. That’s changed now. Nathan Crace of Watermark Golf was tasked to do the renovations and he turned out to be the perfect choice for the redo, given his extensive history with the property, dating to its original construction. “I remember back in 1996 and 1997 walking around the property when it was all just brush and swamp and doing the clearing and all that,” Crace said recently. Eventually, the company that did the construction and managed the property in its infancy went out of business and Crace started his own design and management firm. He operated The Refuge for 18 years and then was charged with overseeing its renovations. “I’ve been doing golf course design work for 26 years and this is the first time I have done any renovation work on a course I was managing,” Crace said. “It sounds ide-

al. You’d think it would be very simple because one person has their hand on it, but it’s very taxing. I was literally there every day for five years.” Cost of the renovations was approximately $2 million. Included were the creation of three new holes so that a new routing would include returning nines, extensive underbrush clearing and redoing the bunkers. Greens were redone with Tifeagle Bermudagrass and restored to their original size. But the biggest improvement came by creating wider corridors. “It was tight when it opened in 1998 and then you had 20 years of tree growth,” Crace said. “There were holes that were literally like a bowling lane.” On at least two holes, Crace said trees on either side of the fairway were touching just 30 or 40 yards off the tee. Tree removal and brush clearing opened up the course. Errant shots are still penalized, but golfers no longer have to abandon their balls. Crace was pleased with the way the renovations turned out, and the course received rave reviews in the months after it reopened. Golf, Inc. magazine, ranked The Refuge No. 2 on its “2021 Renovations of the Year” list.

Aerial shot of the $2 million restoration at The Refuge. “Everybody says the same thing – the conditioning is amazing,” Hatfield said. “I always like hearing from people who played the course before because their input is invaluable to us as far as what the changes have been and to really make sure what we are doing is on the right track.” The updated version of The Refuge stretches from a comfortable 4,439 yards from the front tees to 7,013 yards from the tips. It’s a playable 6,327 yards from the II

tees. With five sets of tees, it’s not to find the best distance for players to find their comfort level. The Refuge is mostly flat with a modest number of bunkers and water, and now that the front nine returns to the clubhouse it is easy to walk nine holes. Unless you are playing the tips, The Refuge features a nice mix of short and longish par-4s. Yardages on the par-3s range from 107 yards to 168 yards from the No.

III tees. The staggered yardages ensures that players will get to hit a variety of clubs throughout the round. The ninth hole used to be No. 18 and now is a memorable par-5 with a spectacular view of the new hotel. A unique aspect of the course is its aqua practice range. Every shot longer than a wedge is hit into a large pond with fountains offering measured targets. “It’s one of the things we kept prior to the renovations,” Hatfield said. “It’s a pretty cool feature that you don’t see a lot.” Eventually, golfers will be able to practice at night. Hatfield said The Refuge has been going strong since it opened in May. “Everybody has absolutely loved the golf course,” he said. “That has been quite a blessing. When you open a new facility, you are almost waiting for something to go wrong. In six months that hasn’t happened. “Obviously, it hasn’t been perfect. But I tell our staff let’s be better today than we were yesterday. We are going to make mistakes, but let’s not worry about it and be better tomorrow. If we keep that mindset, then we are going to continue to grow and grow and grow.” The new $50-million hotel features multiple restaurants and bars, a swimming pool, lazy river, 27,000 square feet of meeting space, fitness center, cooking school and spa attached to the golf course. It is located just minutes from the city’s main airport. Mississippi Director of Tourism Craig Ray hopes The Refuge makes Jackson a destination and a jumping-off point for golf in the state. He notes the close proximity to many of the state’s acclaimed public golf options makes The Refuge a perfect drawing card. “To have a public golf course attached to a $50-million hotel project with restaurants this close to the airport truly allows us to be a destination,” Ray said. An avid golfer, Ray is happy The Refuge is providing another public golf option for the area. “It’s an old golf course, but really it is a new golf course,” he said. “It’s much more player friendly. A Tempest in East Texas by art stricklin

GLADEWATER, Texas – If your group is looking for a short jaunt to a new destination, try this hidden East Texas Piney Woods gem, newly renovated with modern lodging and down-home golf and food. Tempest Golf Club, which was renovated in 2018 by architect Jeffrey Brauer, is located just outside Gladewater, 95 miles south of the Oklahoma border. It jumped from unranked to No. 42 in Texas’ only statewide rankings in 2021. With the addition of two modern condos last spring, which sit behind the No. 9 tee, plus the possibilities of more to come, which can sleep between 6-8 people, the semi-public course has begun showcasing its stay-and-play packages for 2022. “We’re certainly thrilled that so many golfers and golf raters are discovering what we have felt since opening the Jeffrey Brauer-designed course in 2018. This is the best golf in East Texas and a true hidden golfing gem in our area and our state,” Tempest Di-

rector of Golf Randy Wade said. “To be ranked in the top 50 in only our third year means that the many improvements we’ve made and are continuing to make are paying off.” The huge tree-lined site had been in the area for many years, but new owners knew they needed a greatly renovated facility if they were going to attract any play in the Texas-Oklahoma-Louisiana region, all within an easy drive of the course. After calling in Brauer in 2016, who has done several championship layouts in the Southwest and elsewhere, the project took two years. He took full advantage of the rolling, wooded scenery, along with natural creeks to create a scenic layout with plenty of bite. It plays as a par-72, ranging from 7,229 yards from the back tees to 4,512 yards from the forward markers. “There has been so much hard work put in by so many people, especially course superintendent Stephen Killingsworth, and his hard-working staff, it’s gratifying to see that recognized on a statewide basis,”

Wade said. After the first three holes serve as a bit of a warmup routed over a small creek and thick hardwoods, the fun really starts on the par-3,No. 4 hole which features an elevated tee box overlooking part of the front nine and a one-shot opportunity to a small green and more water. A blind tee shot over a large mound awaits on the par-4, No. 5 hole, but it’s just the beginning of an East Texas thrill ride. The back nine starts out with a triple-level green on a fairly short par-5 which allows you to start off your nine as a hero or goat should you find the greenside water. Much of the back nine features huge fairways and tree-lined approaches on holes 11-13, 1516. The 17th hole is another elevated par-3, with the 18th a water-crossed par-4. A huge U.S. flag and flagpole, the largest in East Texas, was dedicated behind the No. 9 green on Veterans Day 2020. The course is owned by the Joe Bruno family, a New Orleans-based attorney, and offers a familystyle atmosphere for golf and lodging.

Of course, all of that golf and scenery can make a person powerful hungry. The large clubhouse offers Neptune’s Grille and Bar, with a full menu and everybody really does know your name after a few visits. For those on the stay-and-play package, you can always find coffee in the clubhouse, an inviting lunch-and-dinner menu and a full bar with a huge painting of Neptune and various sea creatures behind the bar. A large couch and chairs fronts a large screen TV in both units when golf is done for the day. Of course, there are large golf paintings hanging on the walls to remind you where you are at all times. The condo has one large master bedroom and two double rooms with TVs in each along with two bathrooms. There is ample indoor and outdoor parking as well. It’s close enough you can walk to the course if you see fit or drive three minutes to the front entrance. Washington's west side golfers come in droves, as do Canadians, and as do so many from the Intermountain West and the coast. But the draw has become national and international, and with much from which to choose. "We're all very appreciative here of getting to meet people from all over the U.S. and the world," said David Vonbrethorst, head professional at Circling Raven. "So many of them are playing several courses in the region. We get big groups from private clubs in Texas, make them feel like they're members here, and share in the joy they feel with our golf, and also with our climate." Andy Mackimmee, head pro at the Coeur d'Alene Resort, sees relative few players from the immediate vicinity. With so many coming from elsewhere, he sees great value in what they may find. "In the summer months, we see this a lot -- a player who just played one or more of the courses," Mackimmee said. "They agree. For the money, this is one of the most incredible golf trips you can make, and it's fun to be part of that." Spokane has long been known as a golf Mecca, not to mention a city steeped in golf culture. Mid-week summer tee sheets will consistently show 350-400 names, and almost all on them show up. Yet, among the pleasures of playing golf in the Inland Northwest is its accessibility, that meaning the number of quality courses, to be sure, but also the over-the-top efforts so consistently offered by pro shop staffs toward getting your fanny out there and on the tee. You're a single? They'll find you a game. Twosome? They'll find another just like yours. "It's for all of us to offer what we call 'Welcome Home' values," Vonbrethorst said. "It's very true. Indian Canyon 10th (left) and 18th (right) For many, maybe most, who visit this region, there is some shock value. Washington is "The Evergreen State" and proudly so, but it's not all green. Not exactly. The state's Columbia Basin, east central geographically, is desert. That's right, desert, until you're eastward enough for Spokane County, and North Idaho, where forests grow and mountain lakes fill a map. The Columbia Basin lies in the rain shadow of the Cascades, elevations dropping to a few hundred feet. The aforementioned Ice Age floods, their great lakes behind glaciers in what's now Montana, sent torrents of water more than a thousand feet deep ripping their way across the Inland Northwest to the Pacific. Sites like that of modern-day Portland, more than 500 miles from the glacial lakes, were under some 800 feet of water. Massive canyons, or Coulees, were carved out in days, even hours, and stretch for hundreds of miles in some areas. Grand Coulee Dam and Lake Roosevelt provide water for agriculture, and add to the lowest cost electricity produced anywhere in the nation.

And just as any visitor, new or otherwise, will take in the laid-back pleasures of life and golf, the Inland Northwest and the Great Northwest leave their marks. A course like Wine Valley will resemble Scotland or Ireland far more to a newcomer than anything he or she might have expected in Washington state -- treeless, bouncy fairways, sand everywhere and, rather than just pubs for a 19th hole, tasting rooms and a fine Cabernet. Walla Walla, its wine industry spawning from a few bold vintners who began growing grapes in the early 1980s, has been transformed from hosting farmer conferences and livestock shows to a hip city of tasting rooms, new reasons for golf and tourism, and a high per capita of sommeliers. The iconic Marcus Whitman Hotel, downtown Walla Walla's only skyscraper and an art deco shrine, boasts five tasting rooms in its vast lobby. In fact, from those early day starters, the immediate region has grown to some 155 wineries, and enough
