Tee Up on Any Terrain
Cedar Creek at Beavers Bend State Park
With the USA’s most diverse terrain, Oklahoma has a course for everyone. For a scenic course with tricky doglegs and stunning lake views, head to Arrowhead — but if you want a course with a natural waterfall as well, Lake Murray is it! If sloped greens on the Pensacola Dam sound more appealing, choose Grand Cherokee. But if you’re eager for a challenge, go conquer the gypsum canyons of Roman Nose or Sequoyah's uneven terrain and elevated tees. Looking for a course for all abilities? Fort Cobb offers a wide-open front nine and demanding back nine! But if beauty is your top priority, you’ll love the pine-rimmed fairways of Cedar Creek at Beavers Bend.

FROM THE PUBLISHER KEN M AC LEODA look to the West for 2023
From our perch in the middle of the country, Oklahomans are positioned to venture in every direction with equal convenience for great golf. The 2023 Travel Issue of Golf Oklahoma reminds us Horace Greeley’s advice is still pertinent today.
In this issue, Golf Oklahoma’s stable of talented contributors search out spectacular venues in California, Arizona, Oregon and Montana, some familiar and others off the beaten track. We hope you enjoy learning more about all of them.
Also in this issue, we take time to honor Morri Rose, the founder of the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour, a man whose impact on Oklahoma golf can hardly be overstated. His January announcement that he was retiring at the end of 2023 brought forth an outpouring of respect and love from parents and OJGT graduates. Finding the correct replacement for Morri will be an important task for the OGA Board and new executive director Kevin Stanton.
And we take a look at the LIV Tulsa event coming to Cedar Ridge on May 1214. After covering the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills, we were not expecting some of the world’s best golfers in the area for quite some time. Lo and behold, the Korn Ferry Tour announced a new event at Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman for June, followed by the LIV Tulsa news.
Though LIV Golf remains a lightning rod for controversy across the globe due to its funding from Saudi Arabia with its penchant for blatant human rights violations, the membership at Cedar Ridge has taken a “just golf” outlook on hosting the event. Insiders say there has been virtually no pushback from members and no one has quit the club in protest, as happened at several venues during LIV’s inaugural season in 2022. Instead, members are volunteering for committees or to work the event and snapping up tickets.
As someone who only saw highlights from LIV’s first year, I’m curious to see
and feel the vibe of a LIV event. Also, to see how Cedar Ridge can stand up to this caliber of field. From a spectator point of view, Cedar Ridge is a wonderful venue and with the shotgun start, spectators can find a perch and watch every one of the 48-man field come by their vantage point.
One thing the LIV Tulsa event will have in common with the Compliance Solutions debut on the Korn Ferry Tour is a huge Oklahoma presence. LIV has Talor Gooch, Charles Howell, Peter Uihlein, Matthew Wolff and Eugenio Chacarra, all of whom played at Oklahoma State, plus Oklahoma’s Abe Ancer.
OSU coach Alan Bratton caddied for Chacarra at the LIV event in Chicago last year and affirmed that players prepare and practice just as hard as they would at a PGA Tour event, despite the huge advance fees some received to join the league. That was reassuring from a competitive standpoint.
You won’t have to worry about the motivations of the hungry field at the Compliance Solutions debut on the Korn Ferry Tour. It will also be rife with players with Oklahoma ties, including Quade Cummins, Logan McAllister, Chris Gotterup, Rhein Gibson, Michael Gellerman, Kris Ventura, Kevin Dougherty, Tag Ridings, Grant Hirschman, Charlie Saxon and more. The level of play on the KFT is off the charts.
Jimmie Austin and Cedar Ridge are excellent venues that will be hard pressed to withstand the onslaughts of players who combine so much length and precision. But neither event is about keeping scores artificially low. Winning scores? How about 22-under for 54 holes at LIV and 26-under for 72 at Jimmie Austin.
Also notable on the 2023 calendar, the OGA State Amateur Championship is July 10-12 at Southern Hills Country Club. Having the amateur at Oklahoma’s premier venue always ensures an extremely strong field will attempt to qualify. Should be a great event and a very interesting year in Oklahoma golf.

Significant Equipment Introductions for Next Season
If you thought golf technology was anywhere near maxed out, the rush of new equipment offerings centered around the late January PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando this year would change your mind in a hurry.
Golf Oklahoma staff members spent their time before, during and after the Show evaluating clubs, balls, and gear to select the most significant ones in order give our readers both an overview and specifics of those we find worth considering. Since we are all avid golfers, we look at the process simply as explaining our findings to a good friend who may be thinking about an addition to the bag for next season.
Below are some of the products introduced at the Show that caught our attention. As we have said many times the process of finding just the club you feel sure will cut five shots off your handicap should include a fitting by a professional fitter who make use of computers and swing analyzers with sophisticated software. Using that as a guide you have the best chance of purchasing a club to give the performance you want and value for your money.
BRIDGESTONE GOLF
In addition to their pioneering effort to promote golf ball fitting, Bridgestone has been a proponent of so-called “soft” golf balls for a better feel at impact without sacrificing distance. The new version of the e12 Contact ($34.99) is still a threepiece and still has the raised dimple center to improve the amount of ball meeting the club. The Surlyn cover tagged FLEXATIV contains an added “impact modifier” for distance and spin.
CALLAWAY GOLF
The Paradym line has three new drivers each priced at $600 using an updated approach to balance the tradeoff between distance and forgiveness that features a carbon fiber sole and crown with a variable thickness titanium face
insert. The standard model has a 15-gram sliding sole weight to compensate for unwanted ball curvature and the better-player 450cc head Triple Diamond is already a winner on the PGA Tour.
Paradym and Paradym X irons feature a urethane microsphere-filled hollow body to improve the head’s feel and sound. The new forged face cup is stronger and was designed using AI. The game-improvement category Paradym X model has 79 grams of tungsten while the better-player Paradym makes use of 67 grams. Both according to the company produce more ball speed taking advantage of the new face profile.
CLEVELAND GOLF
Cleveland’s reputation for making wedges got another boost with the new RTX 6 Zipcore with their low-density core construction for a larger sweet spot and additional forgiveness. Wedges are all about producing spin for precise control and the RTX 6 have tightly spaced grooves that are both sharper and deeper than previously. Four loft-dependent sole grinds are available.
COBRA GOLF
Cobra placed an emphasis on lowering the aerodynamic drag in the three new driver head shapes (each $549) of the Aerojet line plus making use of a new 13-gram internal bridge “floating” inside for added strength and face flex. The Aerojet LS for better players has two changeable sole weights, the MAX model has weights in rear and heel, while the regular game-
by ed travisimprovement category Aerojet has a fixed 12-gram rear weight.
As for their irons, we were impressed by the King CB and King MB models made with a unique five-step forging process which gives them a crisp confidencebuilding feel. The CB (cavity back) and MB (muscle back) will appeal to low handicappers and professionals with consistent loft gapping so a combina- tion set of the more forgiv- ing CBs in lower lofts and MBs in the higher lofts makes sense.
MIZUNO GOLF
Mizuno exhibited the recently announced draw bias game-improvement ST-X 230 and ST 230 drivers but we paid more attention to the JPX 923 iron family introduced last fall for 2023 especially the Hot Metal Pro for low to mid handicap players. It has a forged one-piece nickel Chromoloy head with a cavity back. Around the cavity the body is a V-shape that pushes weight to the iron’s perimeter for increased performance.
PING
Everyone was looking forward to getting the lowdown on the replacement for the popular G425 driver and Ping’s G430 did not disappoint with the company telling us they have never seen distance gains this good from one generation to the next. The G430 Max ($600) which will probably be the choice of most players, has a 25-gram three position rear weight, a variable roll radius face and a new design for the internal ribs.
We also were also interested in the G430 irons for mid- to high-handicap players with a badge in the rear cavity comprised of seven components created by Ping engineers to help conserve ball speed across the entire face not just the center. They also are using a new heat-treating process allowing the face to have more flex because it is thinner as well as being stronger.
SRIXON
Srixon showed the new ZX Mk II woods including three drivers with their proprietary Rebound Frame construction with two flex areas of the head, namely the face and a flexing ring of titanium in the body. The result is better transfer of swing energy to the ball and greater stability when impact is off center. Three versions are available at $500 each for recreational level golfers and better players.
The three ZX Mk II series irons are great looking with the ZX4 super game-improvement category, ZX 5 game-improvement and ZX7 for better players sharing Srixon’s Tour V.T. sole design and progressive width grooves. The ZX4 and ZX5 use the MainFrame club face construction and the ZX7 uses the PureFrame which is a forged ridge inside the head located behind the sweet spot.
TITLEIST
The big draw in the Titleist booth was the new Pro V1 and Pro V1x, the balls that have dominated the world’s professional tours for more than 20 years. The 2023 version features a
new gradational core, firm on the outside and softer inside, matched with a mantle or casing layer for higher long club ball speed and less spin. The cast urethane cover provides control on short shots. White or yellow available at $55 per dozen.
In drivers Titleist displayed at the Show the four TSR models all with a price tag of $599. TSR1 (ultralight super game-improvement) was shown for the first time and the TSR2 (game-improvement category), TSR3 (better player category) plus TSR4 (430cc better player category) were out late last fall. Heads have been reshaped for less aerodynamic drag, have a variable thickness face and either fixed or stationary sole weights.
Worth mentioning for the sake of completeness even though they did not exhibit at the PGA Show are two makers that recently had major product announcements.
TAYLORMADE GOLF
The second-generation Stealth 2 drivers have a thinner more reactive carbon Twist Face and an added ring of carbon fiber replacing titanium around the rear of the head. Of the three models the Stealth 2 Plus ($630) is favored by tour professionals and better players and the Stealth 2 HD ($600) by those wanting a super game-improvement driver. The
regular Stealth 2 ($600) is game-improvement category.
The Stealth HD irons are interesting, being designed for slower swinging players such as seniors. The head is a confidence-producing low profile, and the center of gravity is near the sole to give a better launch though club head speed is lower. One might expect they would have stronger lofts, but they are actually two-degrees weaker to keep the trajectory in the proper window. Seven iron set $1000 steel shafts and $1100 graphite.
TOUR EDGE GOLF
The latest Exotics 723 from Tour Edge continues to have two different metalwood lines, the E723 designed for maximum forgiveness and the C723 for low spin distance. Drivers feature their Flight Tuning System of a sliding sole weight and heads of titanium and carbon fiber. The C723 and E723 lines also have fairway woods and hybrids plus complementing irons and the Pro 723 Forged model and the BL Proto model.
OSU grad brings private label home
by ken mac leodWhether celebrating or commiserating, those who finish a round at the beautiful but difficult Karsten Creek in Stillwater can wind down in style with a private label glass of Karsten Creek single barrel eight-year bourbon.
The private label is the brainchild of Ryan Hamar, an Oklahoma State graduate and enterprising businessman whose company Dry County Distilleries recently purchased the Herman Marshall brand, which was the first distillery in Dallas County since prohibition. The company built an excellent reputation in Texas, obviously not known as a bourbon state, but shut down during Covid. Hamar’s company retained HM founder and master distiller Herman Beckley as a consultant and has resumed production and distribution throughout Texas and beyond while moving the main distillery from Garland to Wylie.
While much has changed, the process that
leads to the renowned Herman Marshall brands has not. From the company website: “Dry County Distilleries continues to utilize its classic small batch production process – sourcing the best
least four years in charred 53-gallon American white oak barrels.”
The Karsten Creek private label, Hamar said, is a mix of 77 percent corn and 23 percent barley with no rye or wheat. It’s a blend created by Beckley that he called Nashville, one described by Hamar as “on the nose, you can smell pancakes and maple syrup with an almost gingerbread finish. A really complex but very tasty eight-year.” We will note that Hamar was chuckling a bit as he gave us that description.
grains possible, fermenting mash in open-top cypress tanks, distilling in traditional copper pots, and aging spirits for at
With a background in mergers and acquisitions, Hamar and his group purchased Herman Marshall in November and while helping former OSU quarterback Brandon Weeden with a charity event at Karsten Creek, the idea for a private label took root and led to talks with Ross Langendorfer, the food and beverage manager at Karsten Creek. After assuring Langendorfer of his OSU roots, the Texas brand was welcomed. Be sure to try some next time you play the course. And who knows, Hamar is looking to expand the private labels to other courses in Oklahoma.
Super Fly Golf Lounge coming to downtown Tulsa
by kim m ac leodHospitality Executive Sheamus
Feeley and David Dill, partners in Food is Family Hospitality, are creating a new experience in Tulsa for golfers who want to play virtual rounds at 100 of the top courses across the globe.
The SuperFly Golf Lounge, set to open in April at 110 N. Elgin across from ONEOK Field in the Vast Bank building, will hold new experiences for golfers who may never get a chance to play Scotland’s St. Andrews or San Diego’s Torrey Pines golf courses.
Golf rounds continue to hold up since hitting historic peaks during the pandemic as more people took up the sport to be outside where the virus was less likely to spread. Since then, indoor golf is also enjoying an uptick. People are no longer just looking for games, they are seeking experiences - even if simulated.
"For some time, people were worried about that one metric about the declining numbers of golfers. I look around at some of the younger generation and they are all playing,” Feeley said. “My business partner David Dill is an avid golfer. I hack a round a little bit. And we enjoy the game. It’s one of those games that is conducive to families playing together. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got an 18-year-old kid and a 65-yearold grandfather, they can play together.”
SuperFly is promoted as an urban country club. With a bit of whimsy, Tulsa-based Duvall Atelier designed a cozy lounge reminiscent of the Bushwood Country Club, which you may remember as the site of Judge Small’s temper tantrums in the 1980 hit movie Caddyshack.
“We wanted something that is fun. Super Fly is a model. I can remember the first time I walked into a country club in the early 80s and there was something about it; the beautiful wood paneling and carpeting. Grew up more in a country farm lifestyle, so it had this total appeal to me, it was such a different world, “ Feeley said. “We wanted to recapture the energy of the first time any of us walked into a fancy
club and got a feel for what it was like because for me it was magic.”
Keeping a compressed footprint and small service staff, the lounge offers just two golf bays for up to four players each, and space behind the bay for up to 30 or 40 spectator friends and family in snow, thunderstorms or shine.
“We like the super fly model because you can’t always get out there due to weather or time restrictions. This is another way for golf to be accessible; it can be a 30-minute commitment instead of a three-hour commitment or you can go for a full three hours.
Since playing St. Andrews or Torrey Pines is not a regular occurrence for most Tulsans, now there is a chance to at least see what some of those more challenging, classic courses are like. It affords players with the ability to play more quickly and use the extra time to play another one or two iconic courses. No ball markers required
Otherwise, players also may choose to use TrackMan Performance Studio technology to improve their games. It gives instant feedback with clear, actionable data and game-enhancing pointers that may improve play.
“Super fly creates an environment where you can bring your own clubs and use it as a tool to tune your game up as well. It’s specific. Having those metrics is really helpful. For a total hacker like me, when some-
one says the club face is a little open, I can understand it intellectually, but don't quite know exactly what that looks like. With Trackman it shows you literally what that looks like, gives you the ability to correct and think through it in real time.”
Feeley opened his first Super Fly Golf Lounge in Littleton, Colo. Now it’s Tulsa’s time. A native of Fayetteville, Ark, Feeley said he has had an affinity for Tulsa since he was a kid.
As far as cuisine, the golf lounge will keep it overly simplified with a Kosher Super Dog served with a New England style bun, mustard, ketchup, muffaletta relish on the side along with pickled red onion and rack of potato chips for the choosing. Specialty drinks include The Rory, cream whiskey, Irish whiskey and cold brew coffee, and The John Daly, an Arnold Palmer with “all the vodka we can legally serve you.” Beer, margaritas and Bloody Mary’s will also be available.
Feeley said they may build the menu but will focus their service on beverages and golf. There are televisions for watching golf and other major sports, and Golden Tee, which Feeley said sometimes trumps the golf bays in heated competition.
Feely and his team are also opening a restaurant next to SuperFly that will be open around the same time, and also will provide a unique experience.
For 22 years, Morri Rose has poured his heart and soul into making sure junior golfers in Oklahoma had a tour that would sharpen their games and provide a pathway to collegiate scholarships and beyond.
In creating, nurturing and developing the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour, he is largely responsible for transforming Oklahoma into one of the nation’s great success stories of junior golf. The OJGT, with full fields and extensive waiting lists, routinely draws entrants from Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and even Nebraska, states that do not have junior tours to match its quality.
Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame 2021 inductee David Edwards of Edmond was the state’s last high school player to earn first team AllAmerica honors in college, doing so at Oklahoma State in 1978, until OJGT graduate Kevin Tway did at OSU in 2011, a 33-year drought. Since then, look at the parade of talent coming out of Oklahoma, and specifically, the OJGT.
An estimated 500 OJGT members have earned college scholarships since Rose began the tour out of his house in 2002. Notable graduates include professional golfers Robert Streb, Tway, Taylor Moore, Talor Gooch, Max McGreevy, Austin Eckroat, Logan McAllister, Quade Cummins, Mason Overstreet, Charlie Saxon, Hayden Wood, Ian
Davis (now a top amateur) and many others at various stages of their careers, an incredible litany of success for any state, let alone one with a population of barely four million.
The current roster of the Oklahoma Sooners, annually one of the nation’s top collegiate squads, is built on OJGT kids. On the current team are Drew Goodman, Jaxon Dowell and Jake Hopper, with the state’s top high school star Ryder Cowan signed to join next fall.
“I truly give the OJGT and Morri credit for allowing a program like ours to get so many great Oklahoma kids,” said OU coach Ryan Hybl. “Every year, going back to Charlie
Saxon, our first Oklahoma recruit. We’ve had Kyle Lewis, Max McGreevy, Griffin Pierce, Brad Dalke, Thomas Johnson, Quade Cummins, Lane Wallace, Logan McAllister, Dowell, Goodman, Hopper and Cowan. We owe a lot to Morri and the foundation he’s put in place. The passion that he’s put into that tour, the effort to improve each and every year, the love that the kids have for Morri, he’s just been super impactful and influential on our kids.”
It’s not just boys who have gone on to the pro ranks. Anya Alvarez and Yujeong Son have reached the LPGA Tour while others such as Kaitlin Milligan and Sydney Youngblood have played professionally.
“It was all about Morri and the tender loving care he put into that tour,” said Mike McGraw, former Oklahoma State and current Baylor coach who has spent many a fall day recruiting players at OJGT events. “They didn’t have to travel the country, didn’t have to spend thousands of dollars to sharpen their games.”
Rose, a golf nut himself who was good enough to play collegiately and reached the 1973 Trans-Mississippi Amateur quarterfinals at Prairie Dunes before losing to Gary Koch, is popular because he shares his love not just with players bound for fame and fortune, but also those whose goal may be the five bag at their high school.
Now 71 and battling a variety of nagging physical ailments, Rose recently announced that 2023 would be his final season running the OJGT. That sound
you hear rolling across the state is the collective groan of every junior golf player and parent in Oklahoma.
To say Rose will be missed might be the understatement of the year. From former players and parents, the outpouring of love and gratitude has already been overwhelming and is just getting started.
“In my family, we all adore him,” said Maggie Roller, whose children James and Jenni played OJGT events from the time they were eligible until
turning 18 and receiving college scholarships to Texas Tech and Tulsa, respectively. “He always makes all the kids feel like they are the most important person in the tournament. The kids know that he loves them and he does what he does because he loves them. I’ve never met a more tender-hearted person.”
Perhaps it’s not surprising that the genesis of the OJGT Tour goes back to a conversation Rose had with Mike Holder when Rose’s son Dayton was a Cowboy golfer and Holder was his
coach. Rose asked Holder, why he didn’t recruit more Oklahoma players and the always prescient Holder told him having a place to compete in the fall would be a huge benefit in developing Oklahoma players worthy of recruiting.
Rose, who was winding down a career as a grade school teacher and principal and later a teacher and golf coach at Midwest City High School, took Holder’s suggestion to heart and started the OJGT. Helped with logistics by long-time friend Kenny Carson and Dan Butler, he also got the crucial support of Oklahoma City pros Steve Carson
"He's done so much for junior golf"
by ken mac leodThe announcement by Morri Rose that he would be retiring after 22 years of running the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour elicited reactions from former players, parents, coaches, pros and more.
Sydney Youngblood of Durant, former University of Oklahoma golfer who is now head men’s and women’s golf coach at East Central University in Ada:
“Morri is an absolute sweetheart. He says time and again, you are all my kids and he meant it. He’s a legend. Playing OJGT against Yujeong Son, Kaitlin Milligan, Shaebug Scarberry gave me the confidence to go play in AJGA and USGA events. He was absolutely crucial in that. Oklahoma is losing a really special guy.”
Mike McGraw, head coach at Baylor University, former head coach at Oklahoma State:
“I get sentimental about this because I recruited and helped coach his son Dayton at OSU. He has done so much for junior golf and the kids know it. I watched Ryder Cowan at this year’s Red River in Ardmore, he had already signed with OU and had nothing to gain by being there. He was there for Morri.
“In a football state like Oklahoma, he gave the kids somewhere to compete in the fall and changed the way kids looked at the game. There was no longer this long off season.”
Ken Carson, Morri’s longtime assistant and brother of former Lincoln Park head professional Steve Carson:
“The pros supported the OJGT from the start. Tee times were slow on Saturday afternoons due to football. But the bonus they didn’t realize was how many parents would rent carts. It turned out to be a great two days for the courses.
“We did everything out of the trunk at the beginning. We had no computerized scoring, no website. The local pros would help and then when we got with the OGA
it took it to another level.
“Right from the start coaches knew what this meant. Mike McGraw would be out there early watching the kids warm up. And I knew (OU coach Ryan) Hybl was serious when he showed up during an OU-Texas football game.”
Logan McAllister, former OU All-American, currently on the Korn Ferry Tour:
“There are tons of guys from Oklahoma who have played professional or college golf at a high level. I think if you ask any of them who had the biggest impact on their career, one of the first persons they would all say is Morri.
“For a state like Oklahoma, he’s a huge reason why we’ve been so successful. As far as a population to actual people playing golf for a career, we’ve got to be near the top of the list.
“From when I was 12 and we met, he knew who I was and was invested in what I was doing. He wasn’t just someone who
See Morri on page 17
Hayden Wood Logan McAllister Drew Goodman Jaxon Dowell Sydney Youngblood Mike McGraw Ken Carson Logan McAllister Mike Holder Ryder Cowan Cameron Meyers Griffin Pierce Lane Wallace(Lincoln Park), Alsie Hyden (Lake Hefner) and Larry Flesner (John Conrad in Midwest City), who liked the idea of guaranteed tee times on weekend afternoons while many golfers were off watching the Sooners or Cowboys play football.
Rose learned the ins-and-outs of tournament management not only from running the OJGT, but from running events for 10 years (1998-2007) in the winter on the Future Collegiate World Tour, a former rival to AJGA with his events mostly in Arizona or California. He started working for them as a trade to allow Dayton to play, then stayed with the group after Dayton moved on to OSU.
His background as an educator taught Rose to treat each child with respect, dignity and love. But his true motivation to do right for others goes much deeper. Wheth-
er it’s his 30 years in education or the 22 with the OJGT, Rose has strived to help others throughout by remembering the second chances and tough love he received at just the age that many begin playing competitive golf.
“I was no angel as a child,” Rose said, noting that his father Dayton died of a massive heart attack at age 39 and his grandfather Oscar stepped in to help his mother Margaret raise him. Rose and his brother David landed in hot water for an incident at the nine-hole Midwest City Municipal Course (now Hidden Creek), and he had to work
grueling hours in the hot sun for the school district to raise $2,000 to pay back golf pro Eddie Abbott for damages.
“Eddie was a good man and he and my grandfather taught me a lot of values,” Rose said. “Everything I’ve done since has been to help pay back the chance they gave me. As my grandfather said, everyone can make a mistake and atone for it, if you do it a second time that’s stupid and that’s not going to fly.
“When I signed my letter (to play collegiate golf at Oklahoma City University), Eddie came to me and said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve traveled a short road time wise but a long road in life. Now you’ve benefitted from golf and don’t ever forget to help others do the same.’ And that’s what I’ve tried to do ever since. Really my entire life has been an effort to atone for that.”

runs the events and gives out trophies. He genuinely cared about every one of us. I really appreciate what he has done. He gets a huge thank you from me.”
Sam Humphreys, played collegiate golf at Tulsa and UMKC, now co-host of the 73rd Hole Podcast and works for The Sports Animal:
“The thing about Morri that I respect so much is he will call you just to catch up and see how you’re doing. He doesn’t forget about you when you’re done playing OJGT. And I would argue that without the OJGT, Oklahoma golf would not resemble what it is today. He gave me an opportunity to learn how to compete and learn how to win before going out to play AJGA or national events.
“And the Red River Challenge was everyone’s favorite event. (For) the banquet the night before he would bring in great speakers. A lot of us bonded at those events. Morri fostered a lot of friendships that are strong today.”
Maggie Roller, golf instructor at Cedar Ridge CC, parent of OJGT players James and Jenni:
“I’ve had two kids play for him and they would both do anything for him. He texted me last week and makes me feel like I’m the greatest teacher on earth. He just has so much care and concern and it was always genuine. The culture that he instilled, all those kids love each other and, for my kids, their best friends are players they met on that tour. He loves each kid and does what he does because of that.”
Below are just a few of the comments that flooded in on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for Morri Rose when he announced his retirement on www.golfoklahoma.org
Debra Leone Scarberry
Morri Rose IS OJGT, but also a great man. He became like a member of our family. We came to love him as well as look up to him. This will be a huge hole to fill and he
will be greatly missed. Congratulations and we love you!

Morri Rose is truly one of a kind. His dedication and love of junior golf has been a blessing to our family. We think the world of him and thank him for his commitment that has made such a difference for so many. We love you, Morri!
11 years before former Oklahoma Golf Association Executive Director Steve Eckroat asked him to join forces. That bond has continued and grown stronger during the tenure of Mark Felder, who announced his retirement from the OGA’s helm last fall.
The OJGT started as a series of four to six events in the fall in Oklahoma City, but soon spread to the eastern part of the state as well and also added events in the spring. The season-ending Red River Challenge at Dornick Hills in Ardmore against a team from the Texas Junior Golf Tour has always been a highlight for all the kids and this year’s final event with Rose will likely draw players from past squads to pay their respects to Rose.
As the tour grew it began to earn ranking points from Junior Golf Scoreboard and stars from the American Junior Golf Association,
both of which made it even more highly sought by juniors who could, for a fraction of the cost of AJGA events, stay home and face fierce competition in well-run events
Two prominent graduates who have credited Rose with much of their success and who have supported Oklahoma junior golf financially are Gooch and Moore. Gooch began a sponsorship of the OJGT last year, while Moore has sponsored the OGA Junior Amateur Championship for several years. The two are having conversations about what they might do together in the future to support junior golf once the new leadership team is in place.
that honed their competitive skills.
It didn’t take long for scores to begin dropping and scholarships to be dangled. It’s unsurprising to see winning scores for 36 holes be double digits under par on the boys side and under par for the girls.
“He is the face of Oklahoma junior golf and has meant so much to me and so many others,” Gooch said. “I think I was 10 years old when I played in my first event and here we are 21 years later and he’s still going strong. I’m so happy for him to be able to move into the next chapter in his life but it’s definitely the end of an era.”
“There’s been a lot of great players but I
think Gooch and Moore are the two fiercest competitors we’ve ever had in the OJGT,” Rose said. “It took me about two tournaments of being around them to see that. Moore I think I first saw at Oak Tree when he was about 12 and all these older boys were throwing money at him because he just skinned them out on the course.”
Jay Doudican works the OJGT events with Morri, doing the computerized scoring and sending results to media and golf organizations.
“Nobody is more of an advocate for junior golf than Morri,” Doudican said. “He wants everyone to succeed. And when they do, when a guy like Talor Gooch or Kevin Tway goes on, it just benefits everyone involved with the OJGT. It just shows this is the best of the best, competing and succeeding and going on to the next level.
“He has a unique relationship with the kids. We give them the business and try to keep it light so it’s not always a grind. The transformation of the tour over the past decade has been amazing. The scores they shoot today . . . incredible. And we had waiting lists of up to 50 players for some events last year.”
Shark Haven
to
guarantees warm welcome at Cedar Ridge
ac leodreg Norman has been lac erated by media and fans worldwide for some of his actions and words in the effort to launch LIV Golf.
When LIV Tulsa comes to Cedar Ridge Country Club on May 12-14, the Great White Shark will find safe harbor in the office of a longtime admirer, thanks to his kindness to an 11-year-old boy some 40 years ago.
David Bryan, for the past 10 years the director of golf at Cedar Ridge, was a tow-headed boy in the company of his father Dave Bryan, then the head PGA professional at Oakwood Country Club in Enid, later the longtime head pro at Southern Hills Country Club. The two were attending the 1982 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. Norman, then 27, had won seven times overseas but was still relatively unknown in the United States and two years away from winning the first of 20 PGA Tour victories.
The younger Bryan was not a fan of his own bleach blond hair and all the attention it drew from grown women, who were constantly fussing over him. His father, spotting the flowing blonde locks of Norman practicing his putting, introduced himself and asked him if he would reassure his son that one day that seeming liability would be an asset.
“He said something like, ‘Hey, I know you’re a young kid right now but the girls will really love your hair later,” Bryan recalled. “He was just really encouraging and I became a fan that day.”
As Bryan grew, so did the resemblance and by the time he reached collegiate golf at East Central in Ada, his nickname was Shark. He even had an affinity for straw hats.
“That’s all anyone knew me by,” Bryan said. “Most people didn’t even know my name.”
Scott Varner, now boys and girls coach at Northeastern State in Tahlequah, gave Bryan a chance when he walked on after a semester at Paris (Texas) Junior College.
“Shark was a great success story,” Varner said, “He was part of four top-10 NAIA teams and helped lead us to third in the nation as a senior.”
The paths of the two Sharks crossed again. As Dave Bryan was now head professional at Southern Hills, David got to spend some time there with his hero at the 1994 PGA Championship, the 1995 and 1996 Tour Championships and the 2001
“Greg would rent a house close to Southern Hills and I was often the one to get him a cart so he could drive back to the house, so we got to talk quite a bit,” Bryan said. “Then the year before Covid he was at the PGA Show as an ambassador for Club Car. My dad and I got in line and were able to spend 10 minutes or so chatting with him there and reminiscing.
“I know he’s been a lightning rod and a lot of people have vilified the guy, but he’s always treat ed me really well. I look forward to seeing Greg and chatting with him a little bit.”
COUNTDOWN TO MAY
Bryan and tournament chairman Frank Billings said the Cedar Ridge membership has actively embraced the LIV Tulsa event, serving on committees, volunteering to work the event and buying tickets.
“It’s just a unique opportunity to bring some of the best male golfers in the world to Cedar Ridge,” Bryan said. “The members are excited to see that type of golfer play their course, just see how their game stacks up to what they are doing. How will they attack holes compared to what we know and do. That will be one of the more fascinating things to see. Are they going to hit shots that you wouldn’t have even thought possible?”
Adding intrigue to how the players will handle Cedar Ridge, the only two players in the field known to have played the course previously are former Oklahoma State golfer Charles Howell, who has played rounds there with former OSU teammate and member Bo Van Pelt, and Talor Gooch, who played the course in a stroke-play qualifying round for the 2009 U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills, shooting 69.
Phil Mickelson escaped to Cedar Ridge to work on his short game during practice for the 2007 PGA Championship but did not
play the course, according to former director of instruction Tracy Phillips.
Cedar Ridge has a proud history of competitive events, having hosted numerous high school and college tournaments, USGA qualifiers, Oklahoma Golf Association and Women’s Oklahoma Golf Association championships, as well as an LPGA tournament from 2004-08 and the U.S. Women’s Open in 1983. It has seldom failed to hold its own.
Both Bryan and superintendent Eddie Roach Jr. said the LIV format, 54 holes for 48 players with a shotgun start starting around noon each day, with music blaring and no cut, will probably lead to some go-for-broke strategy with players not having to play defensive golf.
Cedar Ridge is 7,392 yards from the tips. That distance used to be considered long, but no longer. The par-5 first hole at 540 yards from the back tees will likely be played as a par-4 and even then will be one most of the players can reach the green with driver followed by a short or mid-iron. The once fearsome uphill par-4s, such as No. 4 at 430 yards, will be approached with sand wedges.
LIV Golf will handle setup in terms of pin and tee positions, so the scoring will be in its hands to a great extent. Other unknowns are the weather, which in early May can range from frigid to hot, calm to gales and rain likely at some point. The moisture will affect the firmness of the greens and fairways. Rough will be light barring an early spring heat wave.
Roach said he was following a blueprint laid down by Southern Hills superintendent Russ Myers after he prepared Southern Hills for May events the past two years in the Senior PGA Championship and the PGA Championship. Part of that means mak ing an early call to a sod farm to have sod reserved if there is winter kill such as the area experienced in 2001. Also more pig ment will be put down on the fairways and roughs in March in an effort to stimulate Bermuda growth.
“You’re just trying to encourage the Ber
muda to wake up,” Roach said. “For the rough, our goal is to get whatever we can get. You’re at Mother Nature’s whim when it comes to May golf. It all goes back to the old 150 rule. Daytime highs and nighttime lows have to equal 150 for Bermuda to have active growth.”
Bryan, who admittedly hadn’t followed LIV Golf closely, was surprised when he received the call from General Manager Cleve Stubblefield that Cedar Ridge was looking at hosting an event. Having studied the format since, he thinks some of the things LIV Golf is doing could eventually be incorporated by
the PGA Tour as well.
“A lot of the talk by the membership is about the entertainment side (which includes concerts on Friday and Saturday nights). It’s a festive atmosphere and I’m interested to see and feel the vibe. We could be getting a little glimpse into the future of professional golf with this. You and I may be traditionalists, but when you think about the next generation of fans they are doing some things that are creating interest.”

Good Times in Carlsbad
by tony dearCaptain John Aldridge Frazier, a merchant seaman and farmer who moved from Rhode Island to California in 1881, wasted little time in growing a successful business in his new home state and naming the settlement after himself.
Frazier dug three wells on his 127-acre property and not only found the water he needed to irrigate his farm, but also an artesian spring whose water happened to have the same therapeutic qualities as that of the famous mineral water of Karlsbad in Bohemia (now named Karlovy Vary and part of the Czech Republic).
Along with a few investors, Capt. Fra-
The Crossings hole 7
zier established the Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company, and changed the town’s name from Frazier Station to Carlsbad.
A hundred years or so later, by which time it had become a popular beach destination for vacationers, the City of Carlsbad (eventually incorporated in 1952) sought to build a municipal golf course on a 400-acre site with glorious views of the Pacific and located about five miles southwest of where Frazier had dug in search of his life-giving H2O.
To be fair, the Captain had to deal with considerably less red tape in establishing his thriving enterprise, but it took the city almost 20 years to convince numerous state and federal regulatory boards that its course would maintain wildlife habitats, manage wetlands effectively, be sensitive to archeological sites, commit to retaining and using native soils, and accommodate high-power transmission lines.
Earning the necessary licenses/permits was a huge undertaking for the city’s Spe-

cial Projects division. Building the course was likewise a major accomplishment for SEMA Construction, Jaynes Contracting and Wadsworth Golf Construction. And designing 18 functional holes that satisfied every constraint put before him was a colossal achievement by architect Greg Nash, whose job it was to meet all the demands as well as somehow justify the $63.3 million price tag – a shocking sum for a municipal course especially one whose original budget had been $7 million.
Given the levels of patience, skill and expertise (not to say money) it took to get it built, we’re certainly not going to disparage the course. We fully acknowledge the immense effort, physical and mental, required. But it would be remiss not to mention the Crossings at Carlsbad won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
When you look at Google Earth, the scorecard, photographs, or however else you prepare for a round ahead of time, you’ll soon notice the routing is a little funky. You’ll see you need to drive your cart from the 11th green all the way down the 447-yard 12th in order to reach the tee. And half a dozen times or more, you’ll shake your head and mutter something like “Why does this hole start (or end) here?” Some may even wonder why they built the course at all.
Don’t think Nash, who designed more than 80 courses predominantly in the Southwest before he died in 2019, wasn’t aware of the course’s peculiarities.
“People are going to ask what the heck we were thinking when they play the hole,” Nash said of the 12th. “It was something we couldn’t negotiate or overcome. There was
simply no place else we could go.”
No doubt reading this will make some wince. Bear in mind though that, since the course opened in 2007, it has consistently recorded around 50,000 rounds a year – a number that has risen to over 70,000 since Covid. A lot of people clearly love the place and the best holes are undeniably very good.
Though he had a lagoon, an arroyo or two, considerable elevation changes, stands of protected eucalyptus, and development corridors to consider, Arnold Palmer had significantly fewer worries when designing Aviara, four miles to the south, than Nash had faced at the Crossings. Harrison Minchew did the lion’s share of the design work here and the former Palmer associate is justly proud of the beautiful and engaging course he helped create. Instead of the 17 years it took for the Crossings to get approved and built, Aviara took a mere eight.
“The approval process started in 1982,” Minchew said, “But a growth moratorium slowed the project down significantly. We finally got the go-ahead in ’87 and the course was ready by 1990.”
At the time, no Palmer course had needed as large a budget ($10 million) as Aviara. That’s as much to do with the cost of working in an affluent area and the constraints of the site as much as it is the design of the holes themselves, though it’s no surprise the course does ‘look’ expensive, if you know what we mean. Aviara is lush, colorful, well-groomed, and not without a few man-made features. A round here isn’t cheap, but you probably wouldn’t expect it to be. And the food inside the
handsome clubhouse is much like the course – well-presented and very enjoyable.
Two miles away, also offering an incredible golf/food experience is historic La Costa. Dick Wilson’s original North Course, now the Champions, opened in 1961 and has been the scene of numerous important tournaments – the PGA Tour’s Mercedes Championship (now the Sentry Tournament of Champions) from 1969-1998 -- on a composite layout with nine holes from the South/Legends Course, The WGC Accenture Matchplay and LPGA Kia Classic.
In 2001, Damian Pascuzzo, Steve Pate and Jeff Brauer made some well-received changes and, starting in the second week of December, Gil Hanse and partner Jim Wagner
began another major renovation/redesign project that hasn’t altered the routing at all but is making significant changes to all 18 holes.
“The earthwork will likely continue into April,” said Club Director Dustin Irwin. “We should start grassing later that month, as soon as the soil temperatures are warm enough to allow the Bermuda to take root.”
Irwin doesn’t think the course, which currently sees about 30,000 rounds a year, will reopen to the public until after the 2024 NCAA Championships (in May) when the country’s best college players will be the first to take on Hanse’s fortified layout. The
Wilson and Joe Lee-designed/Pascuzzorenovated Legends Course (originally the South) will remain open to members and resort guests during the Champions renovation.
While luxurious La Costa would make a fine base, there are numerous other great places to stay, most notably, perhaps, the 327-room Park Hyatt at Aviara and the chic Cassara, part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection. And, not surprisingly for a place like Carlsbad, excellent dining options are not in short supply either. Some might be content to eat fish and chips or fish tacos at the Harbor Fish Café on Carlsbad Boulevard
every day, but they probably should try some of the city’s best restaurants like 264 Fresco, Black Rail or 7 Mile Kitchen. Oyster lovers, meanwhile, should squeeze in a trip to the Carlsbad Oyster Farm where they can learn how to shuck correctly and sample exquisite Pinnacle Point or Blonde Oysters.
Terrific golf, superb accommodations, and reliably good weather (just 11 inches of rain a year and an annual average temperature range of 65 to 76 degrees) are your standard ingredients for a great golf trip. Proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the relaxed, welcoming Carlsbad vibe make this one a bit special.
Montana grandeur
by ken van vechtenBIG EYES COUNTRY
It’s time to change (one of) the state’s nickname(s). The sky is indeed big but the takeaway from time spent in northwestern Montana is that the only way to take in the size, scope, breadth, depth, grandeur and unadulterated beauty of it all is to have eyes wide open. And that there’s a comely golf course in the middle of it all is, well, wonderfully fortuitous.
WILDERNESS CLUB
Tucked away in a fold within the northern Rocky Mountains, with Glacier National Park to the east and Canada to the north, Wilderness Club is a resort and high-end residential retreat with a name befitting of its surroundings, save for the fact that there is a lot of swank comfort going on in this “wilderness.” At the heart, for those of us of the golf-addled persuasion, is a highly acclaimed Nick Faldo-branded course, that is one of the best, if not the best, in a state suddenly deep in gotta-play-there courses, even if at first blush there was some doubt here.
“I was concerned,” said lead course designer Brian Curley, reflecting upon his first site visit and assessing the local geologic strata on the drive in and seeing much in the way of rocky rubble and little topsoil. “I thought to myself, ‘Great, this is going to be rocky.’
I wasn’t seeing massive amounts of good material, let alone sand.”
But as happens, there was a Eureka moment.
“Walking where the course now sits, it was all forested and native grasses, then there were meadows, and we were walking around on sandy trails,” Curley said.
“That whole part of the site was sandy. Not only was it sandy, but it was USGA-grade sand, the type you could use to build great greens. When you are sand-based you have so many more options. We knew we were going to be able to find golf holes wherever we wanted.”
And that leads to a very organic routing. While a good bit of terra firma was moved about, notably to deal with wetlands and ponds that seasonally rise and fall, the holes play out as a simpatico, free-form journey not something overchoreographed. In what is not a backhanded compliment, Curley sums it up nicely: “It is a housing development, but the course did not have to give in to that. It plays like a core course.”
Good to the core.
The original developer favored something formal and coifed, with turf rolling to the four points of the compass, flower beds, waterfalls. (The resort has new ownership.)
Curley suggested something native, minimalistic, more in line with modern design aesthetics and befitting the site, the topography, the backdrop. There was a compromise.
What we get is a hybrid, in look and
playing style, something manicured and edgy: places to play a low-running ball of old, but at times an artillery-shell arc is demanded. For all the evergreens it’s not a green-carpeted parkland; trees frame most everything within Wilderness Club, but the course is far from a claustrophobia of single-file corridors. For the sand base,
yond draped in those crystalline skies. And let’s add in some manner of Olympic ski-jump-hills worth of elevation leaps.
Wilderness Club was developed as a retreat for homeowners, with the course as one of but many lifestyle attributes to life in the community that run from a kid-magnet water park to family-friendly
lier this year, I can attest to a kick-ass food-and-beverage program, too, featuring a Montana Rockies version of farmto-fork: think elk, trout, huckleberries, Pacific Northwest Pinot Noir. As owner and developer Brian Ehlert explains:
“Often times with resorts, golf places in particular, food and drink can be an after
my drive in this. I push the culinary team to create a different, representative experience. Homeowner or visiting guest, food should be a part of the experience, it should be tantalizing and interesting.”
Terri and Alex Boyer – she Canadian by way of next-door Alberta, he a Carolinian – “finally found [their] Nirvana” and recently bought a lot in the community and are readying to build.
“Having grown up in Lethbridge, Alberta, I was familiar with the Whitefish area,”
Terri said. “I took Alex out here on one of our first trips together five years ago. He immediately fell in love with the place. As our relationship grew we both decided we wanted to make Montana ‘home’ as soon as Alex could retire.”
Montana is changing, rapidly, as California and Seattle urbanites, and folks from Charleston, S.C., like the Boyers, are drawn in by the state’s attributes. Keying on Whitefish – an hour drive to the south – in recent years, Terri noted changes to
that charming town, and, well, thoughts changed.
“We began a lengthy search to find the perfect spot that offered access to outdoor pursuits,” Terri said. “We were focused on Whitefish because it was close to my family across the border, had a great airport (in neighboring Kalispell) and a national park (Glacier). As the years went by and prices in Whitefish skyrocketed, tourists flooded the small downtown core, we became discouraged. We had heard of Wilderness
Club many times and often said we would one day check it out.”
That day came this past March: “We were mesmerized. What was this place and why hadn’t we come here earlier?”
Don’t fear being shut out, however, traveler. Suite, cottage and lodge-home accommodations are available for getaway guests, and despite a good sense of isolation being farther north near Eureka, Mont., – population 1,517 – it is all acces -
sible, notably due to Glacier Park International Airport 70 miles away. In fact, per Ehlert, the lion’s share of play is daily fee, comprised of on-site guests and mostly locals and visitors driving in from the Flathead Valley, and Canadians crossing in the wake of eased border restrictions.
For all the draw of a truly great course, it is the larger context that resonates, the where of the setting, the place. And that context is equal measures what’s missing.
In Ehlert’s words: “The draw, the hook? It is the space, the wide-open space and the lack of congestion. There is no urban intrusion. There is no railroad noise, there is no highway noise, there is no air traffic noise. Whether playing golf or out for a hike, it is just peaceful. You see the wildlife and the majestic mountains and all you hear are the birds and the wind through the trees.”
Big Hush Country.

A survey of rates at 17 top-line Phoenixarea courses for tee times in mid-February – the peak of the high season in the Valley of the Sun – found that the average greens fee is more than $352, with courses such as The Boulders and Quintero charging up to $499 a round.
Even two of Scottsdale’s older midprice icons, McCormick Ranch and Starfire Golf Club, are charging $289 and $249, respectively.

of money on a Phoenix/Scottsdale golf getaway, it’s best to focus on what you’ll actually be getting for your golf dollar.
My winner in the bang-for-your-buck sweepstakes is the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort on the Fort McDowell Yavapai reservation east of Fountain Hills. Dollar for dollar, We-Ko-Pa’s Cholla and Saguaro courses are head and shoulders above the rest of the area’s offerings.
We-Ko-Pa charges $325 plus tax for a round, cart and range balls during Super Bowl week. After that, it’s $289 plus tax, until mid-April, when the price falls to $199. We-Ko-Pa’s relative value lies in its top-notch service, pristine course conditioning, quality of design, and the beauty of the resort’s desert setting.
Both of We-Ko-Pa’s courses play across a rocky Sonoran Desert landscape populated with towering Saguaro cactus and Palo Verde trees, with guest appearances by the occasional coyote or javelina. There are no highway sounds, no highways in sight, nor any houses.
Once your tee shot is in the air, it’s just you, the desert, the course and panoramic views of the McDowell and Superstition
Mountains.
And the turf. The turf! You’d swear they mow the fairways of both courses overnight.
The two We-Ko-Pa courses are on almost everybody’s best-of list. The Saguaro course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and opened in 2006, is No. 5 on Golf.com’s list of Arizona’s 15 best courses, one of only two public courses on that list.
The Scott Miller-designed Cholla, which opened in 2001, has made Golf.com’s list of the “Top 100 You Can Play” in the United States six times, reaching as high as No. 34.
“I’d place We-Ko-Pa, Troon North and Grayhawk as the top three public courses in the Phoenix Metro area, and I give WeKo-Pa special credit for keeping their prices down,” said Bill Huffman, a former golf writer for the Arizona Republic newspaper.
Although it is often labeled the more fun
of the two, Cholla’s course rating comes in nearly two strokes more difficult than Saguaro from the tips, thanks to Cholla’s forced carries and smallish greens.
The Saguaro course, less target golf and more evocative of an East Coast design, was built with walking golfers in mind, which means greens and tees are fairly close together, often part of the same turf complex. Open approaches to most of Saguaro’s greens invite players to play run-up shots.
“We do hear the same feedback from our guests that Cholla is ‘more fun,’ and ‘a little more scenic,’” said Matt Barr, general manager of We-Ko-Pa Golf Club. “But we do get a lot of ‘Saguaro is a superior test of golf and a better design’ from a lot of the course raters and golf architecture geeks, for lack of a better description.”
Bill Coore, co-designer of Saguaro, re-
cently told a gathering of golf writers and editors at We-Ko-Pa how his team approached the course’s routing in light of the presence on the Miller course on the property.
“I remember when I first came out to walk around, there was some discussion, ‘Do we go into the hills even higher?’” Coore said. “That presentation already existed here; we gravitated more toward the gently rolling ground, with the idea it would be a contrast to the existing course.”
“If a project has two or more courses, they should be different,” he said.
It’s an exercise in compare and contrast that holiday-making golfers are sure to enjoy.

The Chain, The Bucket will enhance Streamsong’s lineup
by gregg dewaltORLANDO, Fla. – One of the top golf destinations in the country is getting even better.
Streamsong Golf Resort in Florida unveiled a construction timeline and potential opening date for “The Chain” short course and its new “The Bucket” putting course.
Construction on The Chain will begin in March with an anticipated opening this fall. The 19-hole course is being designed by the acclaimed Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw design team.
“What we have established here with Mr. Coore and Mr. Crenshaw is extremely unique and a little different from what you see around the rest of the country,” said Craig Falanga, Streamsong’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “That’s what is super exciting about it.”
The Chain will mark Streamsong’s fourth course. The resort already features three highly-regarded 18-hole championship courses - Black, Red and Blue. Now, the resort will enhance the experience for visitors when The Chain’s 3,000-yard layout and The Bucket’s 2.2-acre putting green open this fall.
One appeal of The Chain is that there are the different routings.
“We’ve got a six-hole loop that runs through an oak grove that finishes by the clubhouse and then a 13hole loop over mine cuts,” Falanga said.
The third routing option is to
play all 19 holes.
Director of Golf Mike Scully said the new course will be a perfect addition for
Those courses were built with an emphasis on providing a fun, social environment for guests, and The Chain should follow in that regard.
“Although diminutive in size, we believe The Chain, when combined with the anything-but-diminutive Bucket putting course, has the potential to complement, perhaps even enhance, Streamsong's reputation for must-be-experienced golf,” Bill Coore noted on the Streamsong website.
visitors who might want to play more than 18 holes but are unable able to walk a traditional 36 holes during the resort’s walking season. When the Chain opens, they will be able to decide which option suits their needs for more golf.
“This should be about two or two and a half hours to play, and you can do it in variety of ways,” he said. “We will figure out our way and what our traffic pattern will be. It’s just another notch in the belt for Streamsong.”
Other destinations have experienced success with innovative short-course offerings. Two of the most well know are Pinehurst’s Cradle and Pebble Beach’s The Hay.
For more information visit streamsongresort.com
The Chain will feature holes ranging from 90 yards to 275. There is no par designation, and teeing areas will be marked with dragline chains. But don’t look for specific tee markers – instead, players will be encouraged to play from any point in the markedoff areas. The course is designed with match play in mind.
The Chain is the second Coore/ Crenshaw course at Streamsong. They also designed the Red course. Tom Doak designed the Blue course and Gil Hanse/Jim Wagner designed the Black course.
The Bucket will be easily identifiable, with a 22,000-pound leftover dragline bucket from the site’s phosphate mining days, placed in the middle. The Bucket is an ode to the site’s mining history.
There is a one-acre practice green adjacent to the clubhouse at the Black course, but Falanga said the Bucket will dwarf it.
“It’s a pretty monumental size practice green,” he said.

That’s the golf lesson Dr. Scott Campbell learned with the unique and innovative project, Silvies Valley Links & Resort.
That’s because Campbell and his family are the driving forces behind one of the most unique golf resorts anywhere in the United States, halfway between Boise, Idaho, and Bend, Oregon, which features one of the few reversible golf courses anywhere in America.

It’s a true golf hidden gem, no matter which side of the golf reversible resort you find yourself on.
Campbell is the first to admit he knew next to nothing about founding or running a golf resort, isn’t an avid golfer by any means and had never even heard of a reversible golf course.
But with a 140,000-acre ranch, which covers more than 25 miles of the scenic area, and has a private air strip, he had plenty of room to build and has already proven he could take a small concept in veterinary hospitals and turn it into a nationwide success, as he did with the Banfield
Claire's Course 18-hole reversible putting course. Animal hospitals he founded and later sold.
In 2010, Campbell started researching his golf resort idea, with the encouragement and support of Bandon Dunes founder Mike Keiser and others.
The one bit of advice that he received from his many local golfing friends was that to succeed, he needed a big name, and not surprising, expensive architect. So, Campbell interviewed just about every big-name architect he could find and while they were interested in his project, they already had projects all over the world and would try to fit him in.
Campbell got the name of local architect Dan Hixson, far from the big name he was told he had to have. Hixson had designed a number of courses in the area, including the well-regarded Bandon Crossing, close to the Bandon Dunes Resort.
When Hixson came to tour the area, the pair hit it off and it was a match made in golf resort heaven.
Hixson’s unique design was an 18-hole layout with 27 greens which go by the names of Hankins and Craddock, along with a par-3 called Chief Egan, for a local Indian chief. McVeigh’s Gauntlet, a peakto-peak short course, is another very unique challenge.
The courses are reversed every other day and the experience is two different course layouts covering the same plot of highly scenic land with different challenges each day.
For example, the first hole of the par-73 Hankins Course, is a fairly straight par-4, but the approach shot sets up on the same ground as the par-4, 17th hole at the par-72 Craddock Course. You simply just play the
holes from different directions.
The same is true for the Hankins Course’s par-3 second hole which plays as part of the par-4 16th hole of the Craddock Course. The third (of the Hankins) plays the same land as the 15 of the Craddock Course. It’s not until you get to the par-5 fifth hole of the Hankins that you find a
new green which is not part of the Craddock Course.
Several of the large metal rakes in the dozens of bunkers have the carved wording of, “Sand Sucks,” or, “Why did you hit it here?”
Woe to the golfer who won’t or can’t read signage. Each hole has directional

signs pointing you to the correct hole on the Craddock or Hankins course and a wrong turn could lead to a Titleist upside the noggin from an adjacent hole.
Campbell has actually played the courses enough to know his long-held goal has been fulfilled. Make golf fun, make it scenic and interesting, and get the locals and the new visitors back on a regular basis.
“We will probably never make money here, at least I don’t think so,” Campbell said. “We spent a lot here, a whole lot, but I wanted to do something for the community and the golfers. Sometimes it’s so still and silent out here you can hear your heart beat and that’s what I wanted.”
Along with eight large wooden cabins, there is a small hotel and spa, as well, with a view of a large local lake with the Silvies Valley Mountains in the background, offering the basics of Golf Trip 101. The sunrises and sunsets are truly stunning here as are the home-cooked meals in the large bunkhouse and a huge bar to drink to your good fortune of finding this most unique place.
There is a large table in the cabins for poker games or an in-house meal, a refrigerated wine cooler and a massive big screen TV which usually starts on the Golf Channel but can retrieve hundreds of options. Western art hangs on the wall and there is a wood paneled Jacuzzi on the patio which can soothe the bumps and bruises of a reversible day of golf.
The location is secluded and remote, which is great for an exclusive buddies golf getaway, but tougher for travel. But, like Campbell’s in-state inspiration, Bandon Dunes, he believes in a “build it and they will come” mentality for America’s most unique golf destination.

Epic Travelogue
Golf and the World's wonders
by danny and alice scottFor America’s Golfing Couple, Oklahoma native Danny Scott and myself, Alice Scott, the year began innocently enough with a trip in late January to the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, where we caught up with friends and suffered through the unseasonably cold start.
Six countries, 63 beds and 72 rounds later, we called it a year. A year like no other, that is.
HERE’S A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS
January-February: Airlines seemed flighty, so we drove to Orlando from Arizona. We thought we’d freeze in most of Florida, like when snorkeling with the manatees at Crystal River Resort, an otherworldly experience as gentle giants glided up from the sea bottom and affectionately (maybe scarily) brushed by us. The hot manatee after - half cocoa and coffee - was a warming recipe shared all year.
We dodged a tornado in Cape Coral, cruised the bay at St. Petersburg, stayed and played at Saddlebrook, Innisbrook and Mission Inn. At Omni Amelia Island, a 4 a.m. fire alarm sent us on a sunrise beach walk. Final rounds with a dear friend who was soon to
pass away at World Golf Village reminded us that every moment is precious. The coastal tour continued to Hammock Beach and Turnberry Isle in Miami with iguanas and a knockout 15th-floor balcony view leading to the warm Keys. En route home, dancing dolphins entertained from Perdido Beach’s balcony between golf rounds in Gulf Shores, Ala., and Lake Charles, La., which was ready for Mardi Gras.
April: Casa de Campo in the Dominican
Republic required flights, and assurance of an extended stay in case of a positive COVID test, which was still mandatory for reentry. We didn’t have COVID, but
wished we could have stayed longer anyway. Flitting around the tropical community in a personal golf cart, lounging beachside, playing Teeth of the Dog, and more, makes for a dream paradise.
May to August: We returned to some favorites – Coeur d’Alene in Idaho, Alabama’s RTJ Golf Trail and the magical Nemacolin Resort in Pennsylvania, where Alice floated in a holistic sea chamber while golfers slugged through Shepard’s Rock in the cold rain wishing they were in the spa. Then it was on to Tennessee, where Tellico Village made us want to never leave. But we did, with trips to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota and Pikes Peak in Colorado, staying at The Broadmoor, and evading heart failure on the Terror-Dactyl ride over Williams Canyon in Manitou Springs.
September: A whirlwind week in Wisconsin with European Tour Operators included Sentry World, where the 16th green is surrounded by 30,000 blooming flowers. While touring Kohler’s Ryder Cup course, Whistling Straits, serendipity played her hand as Francesca from Milan set us up for golf at Marco Simone in Rome, host of the next Ryder Cup. Perfect, since we would attend a wedding in Tuscany in October. But first, a gracious Golf France invitation propelled us from Milwaukee to Paris and next year’s Olympic venue, Le Golf National, after a romantic 24 hours touring the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and sexy Moulin Rouge. Our 10-euro scarves at Versailles Palace kept us en vogue and warm in Normandy, which took our breath away with chilly air, oceanscapes, and the American Cemetery. Stories were heart wrenching and heartwarming, including Arnold Palmer standing on the green in front of a war pillbox at Omaha Beach Golf Club when struck by a ball personalized with his name. He shocked his fan by treating the golfers to Calvados, Normandy's elixir. Golf d’Etretat, overlooking dramatic seaside cliffs up the beach, is now
adding manatee to their elixir list.
October: In Italy, we rented a Eurocar for three weeks and mountainous hairpin turns became thematic for the best views and thrills, first on the climb up to Lake Como for boat hopping between cobblestoned hamlets. In Venice, we parked at Marco Polo Plaza, found the Vaporetto boat and then played Marco Polo with our ho -
tel, chasing up and down crowded bridge steps over the canals, wishing we had consolidated to a single bag for one night. Danny finally parked Alice and luggage at a statue while he solved the alley maze and retrieved her for an unforgettable evening along the canals and St. Mark’s Square.
From Venice, we slipped across Slovenia’s border for snowcapped mountains, castles,

turquoise gorges, Adriatic seascapes, and Royal Bled Golf Club. An ebike ride down around the most famously photographed Lake Bled, was enchanting. Returning to Italy, Asiago Golf was an alpine treat with Meltar Boutique Hotel’s Juliet balconies facing a grand distant arch that is the World War I museum where more than 40,000 soldiers are interred. Then, one night in Cinque Terra along the Mediterranean and one in Florence was a tease while a medieval town’s chestnut festival was a surprise cultural experience.
The Tuscan wedding of our Oklahomaborn nephew to his lovely bride could not have been more beautiful and Terme di Saturnia ’s turquoise thermal springs were ultra-soothing. Argentario Golf and Wellness Resort climbed high on our list with its mountain to sea views, also in Tuscany and closer to Rome where we reunited with global friends at the coincidentally held International Golf Travel Market. After meeting South African and Tunisian ambassadors, we played Marco Simone and said, “Arrivederci.”
On to Ireland and the Portmarnock coastal links course, where a crazy seagull ran into and wrestled with our electric trolley wheels. Members demanded a round of Guinness for molesting their mascot. “But it was the only birdie on the round,” we said. Laughter and drinking ensued. Masterminding a left stick shift on the left side of tiny roads, we drove to the west coast with stops at K Club, Dromoland, Trump Doonbeg, up to the Cliffs of Moher, the Middleton Distillery and kissed that Blarney Stone, which is not for luck as we thought but for the gift of gab and now, we can’t shut up. In our sixth consecutive travel week, we wondered, had we bitten off more than we could chew but mustered the energy for bonus holes on Ballybunion, Lahinch and walking the pretty beachside Tralee, every day with a different room number, plumbing, and laughs.
December: More than 60 golf writers joined us in Scottsdale, home, sweet home, for the 20th and final Media Classic at We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort, Grayhawk and Troon North - a happy ending. Whew for ’22 and cheers to your ’23 travel spree.
