Your history does not define your destiny It seems only moments ago when I sat to write the introduction to our last brochure, the reality is that many months have passed and many things have changed in those few months. Looking back over this short amount of time it is amazing how different things look. It’s prompted me to consider how different things are if we extend that time even further. We are all guilty of living in the moment - be it happy times, sad times, busy times or relaxed times. When we are truly in the moment we believe it is never going to end. But it does - it evolves, we evolve. The changes may be big and brutal or slow and discrete. But change we do. Many people fear change and many people crave change, I suppose it depends on your current moment. Change is inevitable so the best way to face it is to take it by the horns and make it yours. Some things we will resist, some things will bring pain, some will bring elation and many will be challenging. But change means that we don’t have to settle. Change means that our history does not define our destiny. Change means that we can turn negative situations into better ones and good situations into great ones. The best change is the change you invest in yourself. Not changing for someone else, but changing to find your passion, love, to define and achieve your goals, pursue your dreams, find your happiness and find you. Where you are today need not be where you are tomorrow. We are not what happened in the past, we are this moment and although many things are part of our history they are not always part of our destiny. Education is a great tool for change - it can bring opportunity, help you pursue a dream, introduce you to new friends and build confidence. It’s time for you to invest in your future self, to redefine your destiny, to find you. Best wishes, Sarah Watterson, CEO 2

Pathway to University Programs
Student Profile Our students come from all walks of life and some of the stories around how they came to be at the College are inspiring! One of these stories is from our Pathways to Nursing student Renee. Renee has a partner and is mother to four young children aged eight, seven and twins aged five. Renee had been at home caring for her family full time then made the decision that she was ready to return to the workforce. So, last year Renee completed an RSA & RCG course at the College hoping to get part time work in the hospitality industry. However, she came to the realisation, that working nights in hospitality just wouldn’t fit with her current family obligations. Despite this, Renee was still determined to get out into the workforce and felt strongly that it was “time to do something for myself.” Then Renee saw in one of our monthly newsletters a notice about the Pathways to Nursing course and suddenly realised that her options weren’t as limited as she had thought and that she’d finally found a way to pursue her goal of one day becoming a Midwife. Renee said she felt “a little bit embarrassed” about trying to start a career at 30 but, after speaking with our trainer, she felt that maybe her goal was attainable via the Pathways to Nursing program and enrolled. Like most mature students, Renee wasn’t quite sure what to expect in an ‘adult’ learning environment and was very happy (and relieved) to find that it was “amazing learning face to face with such an experienced and inspiring teacher, and so much more enjoyable than when I was at school.” “When I come along to class it doesn’t feel like a school environment, learning is great! We’re always made to feel equal when we have discussions in class. I never feel like I can’t do it.” Renee also commented that the support she receives from the college staff is “outstanding, nothing is ever too much trouble.” So, what is Renee’s overall impression of the South Coast Careers College learning experience? In her words … “Wonderful!”
