A N H I S T O R I C PA R T N E R S H I P South Coast Plaza and the New Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum present The Week That Changed the World: Nixon, China and the Arts, a one-of-a-kind exhibition celebrating the tremendous arts and cultural legacies resulting from President Richard Nixon’s historic 1972 trip to China—the first visit by a U.S. president. The world-class multimedia exhibition, on display from June 24, 2016 to August 18, 2016 in Jewel Court, is an unprecedented collaboration by South Coast Plaza and the New Nixon Library with renowned institutions: Segerstrom Center for the Arts, The Getty, Carnegie Hall, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Orange County Museum of Art, Bowers Museum, Philharmonic Society of Orange County, Pacific Symphony, South Coast Repertory and USC Pacific Asia Museum. The Week That Changed the World: Nixon, China and the Arts features a yin and yang motif symbolizing the complementary relationship between the two nations, while a traditional moon gate represents a portal connecting the two world powers. Engaging display panels provide an expansive backdrop for memorable highlights from Nixon’s visit and the wealth of Chinese-related arts, culture, music and theater that has followed.

" T H E W E E K T H AT C H A N G E D T H E W O R L D " President Nixon’s historic visit to China in February 1972 marked the end of 25 years of separation between the U.S. and the People’s Republic of China and the beginning of diplomatic relations, cultural exchange and friendship between the two nations. During the pivotal visit, President Nixon met with Mao Zedong, attended an elaborate banquet and walked the Great Wall of China, and First Lady Pat Nixon toured schools, factories and hospitals in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. As a result of the visit, China famously gifted the U.S. with two giant pandas, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, both of whom lived at the National Zoo. Quoting his Chinese hosts, President Nixon said it was time to seize the day and hour “for our two peoples to rise to the heights of greatness, which can build a new and better world.”

C E L E B R AT I N G T H E A RT S A N D C U LT U R E L E G A CY Concert halls, theatrical stages and museum galleries in the U.S. and China bear witness to the prolific exchange of arts and culture between the two nations in the years that followed President Nixon’s diplomatic visit in 1972. South Coast Plaza and the New Richard Nixon Presidential Library extend their appreciation and gratitude to the renowned institutions which generously provided photographs of highlights that collectively illustrate the profound legacy of “the week that changed the world.”
