Internationalstudentenrollmentat SoutheastMissouriStateUniversity mayreachnewhighsthisfall. Therecordforacceptedapplicationsfrominternationalstudentswas 253infall2011,andthedirectorof InternationalEducationandServices, ZahirAhmed,saidthedepartmenthas accepted280studentsforthisfall, althoughfewerstudentscouldactually enrollatSoutheast. Thattotalincludesstudentscoming toSoutheastforundergraduateand graduatedegreesaswellasforthe IntensiveEnglishProgram,whichis expectedtohaveanenrollmentof morethan150studentsforthefirst timeinthehistoryoftheInternational EducationandServicesDepartment. “Wealwayshaveaguessworkabout howmanywillcome,sowelookat trendsandpastyearsandstuffand someofthestudentresponses,”Ahmed said.“Whathappensisthatsomewill getavisaandcomeandlandintheUS, buttheirrelativesortheyhavefriends inothercitiesandtheytalktheminto comingtotheirschoolinsteadofever cominghere.Sowehavesomeloss withthataswell.That’swhy[weexpect] maybearound240and250.” Ahmedsaidthatwhenhestarted workingattheinternationalofficein January2008therewere200internationalstudents,whichwasexpectedto increaseprogressivelyupto500 studentswithinafiveyear-period. Internationalstudentenrollmentfor spring2013was845,including studentsfrom50differentcountries. Withtheexpectedarrivals,thetotal internationalstudentpopulationcould increasetomorethan1,100students thisfall. “Wearealreadyinthestateof Missouri,bypercentageoftotal enrollment,wearethehighestamong allstateuniversities,”Ahmedsaid. “Sevenpercentofouruniversity
populationisinternational.Thereare otheruniversitiesthatarelargerand havemoreinternationalstudents,but thepercentageismoreorlessfiveanda halforsixpercent.” Theinternationalofficehasone persontoprocessadmissionsand applications,andAhmedsaidthe internationalofficedoesnotwantto overwhelmthestaff.Toincrease enrollmenttheofficewouldhaveto hireanotherpersonforadmissions, whichislimitedbecauseofthelackof resources.
“Cape Girardeau is not a diverse city, so we have to build communities within the campus. If the city was diverse, it would be easier to attract people from many different countries.” Zahir Ahmed “Wearenotreallytryingtogrowthe university.Wearetryingtomaintainit aboutthissize,sowereallytendtohold backinthenumberofstudentswe want....Wecouldhaverecruitedalot morestudentsthissemester,butwe havetolookattheresourceswehave,” Ahmedsaid. “Wesortofgetanideanowabout howmanypeoplewillgraduateand howmanystudentsarelikelyto transferout.Between100and150will transferouteverytime,”Ahmedsaid. Ahmedsaidthattheinternational officehasseveralrepresentativesin multiplecountrieswhorecruitand advisestudentstoapplyornottoapply todifferentuniversities,including Southeast,accordingtotheirinterests andqualifications. “Whattheagentsdoforusisscreen outpeople…andtobecomemore efficient,wetrainouragents.Iflyover
theretoIndia,toSriLanka,Japan,andI trainthemintosaying,‘OK,theseare thekindofstudentswewant.’” Southeasthasagentsthatrecruit studentsfromUnitedEmirates,Saudi Arabia,Bangladesh,SriLanka,Japan, China,Vietnam,Nepal,Nigeria, Uganda,GanaandZimbawe.Southeast onlyhasoneagentinEurope. Thebiggestinternationalstudent groupsinspring2013werestudents comingfromChina,SaudiArabia,Sri LankaandIndia. Competitionbetweenschools exists. “AgenciesarelikeWal-Mart,” Ahmedsaid.“Ihavetogotheretomake suretheagentplacesSoutheast MissouriStateUniversityontheright shelf.” OnechallengethatSoutheastfaces isthatCapeGirardeauisnotas attractiveadestinationaspopular citiesinCaliforniaandNewYork,which internationalstudentsalreadyhave heardofandwhichoftenaresimilarto theirbighometowncitieswithpublic transportationandtourist-friendly attractions. Studentsareunlikelytochooseto stayinCapeGirardeauunlesstheyfind acommunitywheretheyfitinandfeel athome. “CapeGirardeauisnotadiversecity, sowehavetobuildcommunities withinthecampus,”Ahmedsaid.“Ifthe citywasdiverse,itwouldbeeasierto attractpeoplefrommanydifferent countries.Whathappensisthatthey [newinternationalstudents]come here,theyfindthatthereisoneperson ornobodyelsefromtheircountry,and theybegintothinkoftransferringout.” Ahmedsaidthattheycannotbuild communitiesforeverycountrythatis representedatSoutheast,soofficials havetopickthecountriestheythink willgrowascommunities.Inturn, thesecommunitieswillattractandhelp retainnewstudentscomingfromthose countries.

Recreation฀Services฀provides฀a฀variety฀of฀ intramural฀sports฀including฀flag฀football,฀ bowling,฀soccer,฀ultimate฀frisbee,฀softball,฀ tennis,฀sand฀volleyball,฀indoor฀volleyball฀ and฀racquetball.฀The฀newest฀addition฀to฀ the฀fall฀roster฀is฀battleship. Battleship฀made฀an฀appearance฀for฀the฀ first฀time฀last฀fall฀as฀a฀special฀event฀in฀the฀ Student฀Aquatics฀Center.฀According฀to฀the฀ assistant฀director฀of฀Recreation฀Services฀ Jennifer฀Rose,฀nine฀teams฀formed฀to฀participate฀in฀the฀event. The฀sport฀required฀teams฀of฀four฀to฀ use฀three-gallon฀buckets฀to฀try฀to฀sink฀the฀ opponents’฀canoe.฀To฀defend฀their฀canoe฀ from฀the฀buckets฀of฀water,฀the฀players฀were฀ given฀a฀yoga฀mat.฀Battleship฀will฀appear฀as฀ another฀one-night฀special฀event฀in฀fall฀as฀ well฀as฀in฀the฀spring. Southeast฀students,฀faculty,฀alumni฀and฀ community฀members฀who฀have฀a฀recreation฀membership฀are฀able฀to฀register,฀ though฀in฀the฀past฀the฀majority฀of฀players฀ have฀been฀students. Students฀who฀play฀a฀sport฀at฀Southeast฀ have฀specific฀rules฀to฀follow฀when฀signing฀ up฀for฀an฀intramural฀team.฀There฀are฀certain฀NCAA฀guidelines฀as฀well฀as฀intramural฀guidelines฀that฀athletes฀must฀follow.฀ Athletes฀are฀prohibited฀to฀form฀a฀team฀that฀ is฀similar฀to฀the฀sport฀the฀student฀plays฀or฀ that฀is฀the฀same฀sport.฀Rose฀said฀that฀each฀ coach฀has฀their฀own฀rules,฀and฀some฀prohibit฀their฀athletes฀from฀participating฀at฀all. Anyone฀of฀any฀skill฀level฀is฀eligible฀to฀play฀ in฀individual฀and฀team฀sports.฀Groups฀can฀ be฀organized฀within฀residence฀halls,฀Greek฀ organizations฀and฀individual฀groups.฀If฀any฀ person฀cannot฀form฀a฀team฀on฀their฀own,฀ the฀intramural฀sports฀organizers฀can฀help฀ place฀him฀or฀her฀on฀a฀team. Rose฀said฀that฀every฀sport฀ranges฀between฀five฀to฀60฀teams฀and฀that฀the฀bigger฀ sports,฀such฀as฀softball,฀flag฀football฀and฀ softball,฀usually฀have฀50฀to฀60฀teams.

Dufekworkedwiththeproductionstaffof“Killshot,”featurefilmthatcametoCapeGirardeauin2008andhelpedfind internshipsfor27studentsduringtheshootingofthemovie. Dufekisconstantlyworkingtofindjobopportunitiesfor Southeaststudents,includingonthefeaturefilm“GoneGirl,” whichisbasedonthenovelbyGillianFlynnandisbeingspeculatedtohavemultiplescenesshotinCapeGirardeau.
Q: Since there have been casting calls, is it safe to say that there is going to be a movie, “Gone Girl,” filmed in Cape Girardeau? A:Ithasnotbeenofficiallyandformallyannouncedthatthere isgoingtobeafilmmadeinCapeGirardeau.Everythingthat ishappeningrightnowpointstothefactthatthereisgoing tobeamovie,orpartofthemoviemadehere,butneither 20thCenturyFoxortheproducershaveofficiallyorformally announcedthat,andthat’stheofficialwordbyeverybodythat Capeisunderconsiderationforthis.That’sthewordthatIget fromeverybodyI’vetalkedto,butallsignspointtothis,andit’s apositivethingtobeherebutofficiallynoconfirmation.
Q: Did the people involved with the film contact you, or did you contact them? A:Ihavealotofcontactsaroundthestate.I’montheMissouri MotionMediaAssociationBoardofDirectorsandhavebeen forseveralyears,whichsupportsanykindoffilmmakingor storytellingwhetherit’sfilmortelevision,andwesupportthe filmoffice.Becauseofthat,whenthefilmofficewascontacted by20thCenturyFoxandtheproducersof“GoneGirl”thefilm coordinatorgavethemmyname.Theycontactedmebythe endofJulyandaskedifIcouldhelpthem.
Q: A few years ago the movie “Killshot” was filmed here. Did you have any part of helping with that? A:Yeah.IhelpedwiththelocationsurveywhentheproducersandthedirectorJohnMaddencameintotown.Chuck Martin,whoisthedirectorof“TheConvention”and“Visitor’s Bureau,”calledandaskedifIcouldhelpwithlocationscouting.Soforquitesometimewedrovearoundthedirectorand theproducersalloverthecommunity.WewentovertoIllinoisandlookedatsomesitesandmadeagreatrelationship withthembybeingabletodothat.Intheconversationsthat wehadwewereabletocreateinternshippositions.Wehad27 internsplacedonthefilm,whichwasfantastic.FredJonesand Icollectivelygotthestudentsinvolvedinthat,andwe’vehad somethat,fromthosecontacts,arestillintheLosAngeles/ Hollywoodareaworkinginthebusiness.
Q: Are these the only film opportunities that you’ve had the chance to work for? A:InCape,no.WehadaTVseries.You’veheardofDickWolf and“Law&Order.”Hedidasyndicatedseriesabout10years agothatcametotown,andweshotfiveepisodesofthathere overaboutamonth’stime.SoIworkedwiththemonavariety ofpositionsandmadecontactswithsomeofthoseproducers andpeopleandkeptintouchwiththemandhavebeenableto keepthatgoingoverseveralyears.Soit’snottheonlyoneI’ve everworkedon,no.
Q: There was a casting call held in Rose Theatre. Can you explain what exactly happened during the casting? A:Thecastingdirectorwentthroughthelistofpeoplethat sheneedstofillthespots.TheyhavebeentoKansasCityand St.Louistofillspots.I’vereadthatthey’vedonesomework inLosAngeles,andthey’velookedatpeopleinthatareafor majorroles.Yougofromtheprincipalcharacterstothemajor rolestothebitpartstotheextras,andthere’smoreinbetween that,butthere’salineofsuccession.Weputareleaseouttothe communityaskinganybodyiftheywouldliketoparticipate.I putoutoneemailtovariousradio,TVandprintpublications, andthat’sallittook.Justone.ItfilteredoutthroughFacebook,throughTwitterandthroughnews.Thecastingdirector thoughtthatshewouldgetabout300,andIsaid,‘No.We’llget athousand.’Ithoughtmaybe1,100. Westoppedcountingat1,400becauseitwasatremendous successtothepointwherethecastingpersonnelwerethrilledthatwehadthismuchenthusiasminthisareatosupport thisfilm,whichsaysalotaboutourcommunity,Ithink,that theywanttogetinvolvedandtheywanttohelp.Everybody wantstobeinvolvedinsomesortofcapacitywiththistypeof franchise,andIthinkthatthisisagreatavenuetobringpeopletogethertodothis.Wesaweverykindofperson—small, big,large,white,green,Imeaneverybodywashere.Theywere patient.Somehadtowaitovertwohoursbecausetheauditoriumwasfilledthroughthelobby,outthehall,outside,around thecorner.Itwasintense. Wefinallyhadtocutitoffafter4o’clockbecausewestillhad anauditoriumfullofpeople,andtherewerepeopleknocking onthedoorat5o’clockandthecastingdirectorsaidthatwe haveplentytofill.She,thecastingdirector,withintheprocess oftakingaheadshot,becauseallitwaswastakingaheadshot, becauseyou’reextras.Allyouareisbackground.Shewould seesomebody,andshewouldpullthemoutandsay‘Come overhere,andlet’sdoalittleanimation,let’sdoalittlecharacterization,’andshewouldmakenotes.Shewouldn’tgive themanyfalsehopebysayingthisisgoingtoworkforyou.She wouldmakenotes,andthenIthinktheywentbackandwent throughalloftheprocess. Itwasafullday.Ihadeightstudentsthatvolunteeredto help,threefull-timestaffandwehadDPShere.Itwasafullday IknowIwashere12hours.

Q: Aside from finishing casting, what is the next step? A:Well,rightnowwe’vealreadybeeninformedthatsomeof ourstudentsintheTV/Filmareahavealreadybeenhiredto serveasproductionassistantsorPAs.I’vealreadygotsome informationonthat.FredJonesandIaretryingtohelpcoordinatethatwiththeproductionpersonneltoletthemknowthat wehavepeople.It’safull-timegig. Theydon’twantanypart-time,theywantfulltime.Full timeis12to14hoursaday,sevendaysaweekforthewhole shooting.Nodaysoff,no‘Ihavetogotoclass,’notheydon’t wantthat.Theywantsomeonefulltime.FredandIhavesent outinformationtoouralumstoinformthemofthisopportunity,andifthey’reworkingsomeplacewheremaybetheycan takealeaveandcomeback.Iftheydon’tfillthepositionshere, thentheywillpulltheminfromthecityofSt.Louisbecause thosepeopledothatfull-timefreelance. Ournextstepisto,whenwefinishupcasting,I’vealready talkedtotheartdepartment,andwe’veofferedourservices toasmanyaswecanhelp.We’vegotpeopleinthebusiness allover,andwejustwanttogetourstudentsinvolvedinthis. Thatisthetotalmotivation.That’sit.That’swhatkeepsme goingforthisbecauseifwegetourstudentsinvolveditcould createalong-termcareerpath.
Why did you choose to come to Southeast Missouri State University?
Ashtyn Brooks Because I heard it was a great school, and I heard it had a great education program. I hope to be an elementary ed teacher.
Nicholas Deloch Because it was close to home, and I just liked it when I came to visit.
Haley Childers It’s a really good school, and it’s close to home. But it’s just far enough where I know a lot of people here, and I can go home all the time.
