DURING WHICH AROUND PEOPLE ATTENDED TO ASK THEM QUESTIONS AND LEARN ABOUT THE DIRECTION THEY WOULD STEER 3OUTHEAST $R 0AUL $ 0LOTKOWSKI SPOKE ABOUT HOW HE GREW HIS COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND COMPUTING AT 'RAND6ALLEY 3TATE 5NIVERSITY WHILE $R -ARGARET % -ADDEN SPOKE ABOUT HER COMMITMENT TO BEING STUDENT FOCUSED !T 'RAND6ALLEY 0LOTKOWSKI STARTED AS THE DIRECTOR OF A NEWLY DEVELOPED ENGINEERING PROGRAM WITH ABOUT STUDENTS AND GREW THE PROGRAM INTO THE 0ADNOS #OLLEGE OF %NGINEERING AND #OMPUTING WITH A CURRENT ENROLLMENT OF MORE THAN STUDENTS h7E ARE VERY HAPPY WITH WHAT WE DO v 0LOTKOWSKI SAID h)F ) COULD TRIPLE MY NUMBER OF GRADUATES MY EMPLOYERS WOULD STILL NOT BE SATISFIED 4HEY LIKE THE GRADUATES THE GRADUATES LIKE COMING TO US AND WHAT THEY VE EXPERIENCED !ND ) M THINKING THAT WE VE KIND OF GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE ) ACTUALLY FINALLY DID THE JOB THAT ) WAS TOLD TO DO AND MAYBE IT S TIME FOR ANOTHER CHALLENGE ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY v -ADDEN IS CURRENTLY THE PROVOST AND VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS AT THE 3TATE 5NIVERSITY OF .EW9ORK AT 0OTSDAM h) VE BEEN IN THAT POSITION NOW FOR ALMOST YEARS v -ADDEN SAID h"ECAUSE ) VE BEEN IN THE POSITION FOR SUCH A LONG TIME ) REALLY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE A LOT OF THE FACETS OF THE PRESIDENT S JOB AND TO WORK WITH PEOPLE ACROSS THE CAMPUS IN WAYS THAT ALLOW A KIND OF HOLISTIC VIEW OF STUDENTS AND THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS v 0LOTKOWSKI SAID THAT A PRESIDENT S ROLE REQUIRES BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMMUNITY TO CREATE A SHARED VISION h)N TODAY S WORLD WE CAN T BE LOOKING TO THE STATE TO PROVIDE ALL THE FUNDING TO DO EVERYTHING WE NEED TO DO v 0LOTKOWSKI SAID

h7E CAN T OPERATE A UNIVERSITY IN ISOLATION FROM THE COMMUNITY 7E NEED TO KNOW WHAT S NEEDED OF OUR GRADUATES WE NEED TO KNOW HOW WE CAN CONTRIBUTE AND WE NEED TO ENGAGE OUR STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY TO ENRICH THE COMMUNITY BUT ALSO TO ENRICH THE STUDENTS v -ADDEN SAID THAT FINDING EXTERNAL FUNDING HAS BEEN THE MAJOR CHANGE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL POSITION OVER THE PAST YEARS h4HAT S A PART OF THE ROLE THAT ) FIND PARTICULARLY APPEALING AND ATTRACTIVE v -ADDEN SAID h)T WOULD BE A CHANGE OF PACE FOR ME BECAUSE AS A PROVOST MOST OF WHAT ) VE DONE IS MANAGING THE DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS OF THE CAMPUS "UT ) VE LEARNED THAT ) LOVE TALKING TO ALUMNI ABOUT WHAT THEY GOT OUT OF THEIR EDUCATION AND WORKING WITH THEM ON WAYS THEY CAN GIVE BACK TO THE INSTITUTION

SOME OF WHICH MAY INVOLVE FINANCIAL DONATIONS BUT ALSO CAN INVOLVE THINGS LIKE ARRANGING INTERNSHIPS AND JOBS FOR STUDENTS OR BEING ON ADVISORY BOARDS FOR PROGRAMS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY RE CURRENT IN TERMS OF WHAT S BEING LOOKED FOR IN THE PROFESSION v 0LOTKOWSKI SAID THAT OPEN COMMUNICATION IS KEY TO HAVING A UNIVERSITY MEET ITS NEEDS AND GROW AND THAT ENVIRONMENT OF TRANSPARENCY HAS TO START WITH THE PRESIDENT S OFFICE (E ADDED THAT THE PRESIDENT HAS TO BE THE ADVOCATE OF THE UNIVERSITY h)F THE PRESIDENT ISN T THE NUMBER ONE CHEERLEADER FOR A UNIVERSITY SOMETHING S WRONG v 0LOTKOWSKI SAID h) AM PROBABLY NOT THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THIS ROOM BUT ) WOULD DARE TO BET THAT ) M ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING v 0LOTKOWSKI ADDED THAT AT A CERTAIN POINT

YOU CAN T JUST WORK MORE OR HARDER (E SAID THAT UNIVERSITIES HAVE TO LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO hWORK SMARTv THROUGH USING TECHNOLOGY OR REENGINEERING SYSTEMS %XAMPLES HE GAVE WERE CREATING BETTER ONLINE SYSTEMS TO AVOID REKEYING INFORMATION OR HAVING COURSE EVALUATIONS DONE ONLINE SO WORKERS DON T HAVE TO TYPE UP THE FEEDBACK -ADDEN EXPLAINED THAT THE NEXT PRESIDENT will need to learn and understand the

UNIVERSITY S CULTURE BEFORE HE OR SHE CAN BE AN ADVOCATE FOR THE CAMPUS h)T S REALLY EASY FOR ME TO BE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE VALUE OF EDUCATION AND THAT S PART OF WHAT PRESIDENTS NEED TO DO WHEN DEALING WITH LEGISLATURES DEALING WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS DEALING WITH ORGANIZATIONS AND GENERALLY DEALING WITH THE EXTERNAL CONSTITUENTS ON CAMPUS v -ADDEN DESCRIBED HER MANAGEMENT STYLE AS COLLABORATIVE SAYING THAT WHAT SHE DOES BEST IS BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER TO IDENTIFY AN ISSUE AND SOLUTIONS WHILE ALSO GIVING SPECIFIC TASKS AND DEADLINES h) DO THINK THAT HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS ARE STRONGEST WHEN THERE IS A LOT OF COLLABORATION AND THAT IMPLEMENTING PROGRAMS WITHOUT CONSULTATION WITH THE PEOPLE WHO WILL IMPLEMENT THEM IS A WASTE OF TIME v -ADDEN SAID 3HE EXPLAINED THAT THE MAIN CRITERIA SHE USES WHEN MAKING DECISIONS IS WEIGHING THE IMPACT ON STUDENTS WHILE ALSO TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION SUPPORT FOR FACULTY AND STAFF 7HEN ASKED WHAT HE WOULD FIRST TRY TO DO AS 3OUTHEAST PRESIDENT 0LOTKOWSKI REPLIED THAT AT THIS POINT HE MOSTLY ONLY KNOWS ABOUT THE GOOD THINGS h)T S HARD TO KNOW WHERE THE CHALLENGES ARE v 0LOTKOWSKI SAID h4HE ONE THING THAT IS ABSOLUTELY CLEAR IS THE NEED FOR INCREASED REVENUES )NCREASED SUPPORT FOR THE UNIVERSITY WITHOUT INCREASING THE BURDEN ON THE STUDENTS 4HAT S NUMBER ONE v -ADDEN EXPLAINED THAT 3OUTHEAST HAVING SIMILARITIES TO 35.9 0OTSDAM HAS PREPARED HER FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL POSITION h) THINK ) HAVE A BREADTH OF EXPERIENCE v -ADDEN SAID h) THINK ) M PASSIONATE ABOUT THE EDUCATION THAT YOU OFFER AND HAVE A REAL FEEL FOR SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR STUDENTS IN TERMS OF THEIR SUCCESS

AND ) THINK THAT THE FACT THAT ) M REALLY INTERESTED IN BEING ENGAGED IN FUNDRAISING AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WAYS TO BRING NEW RESOURCES TO THE CAMPUS IS A REAL ASSET !ND IT S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THINGS v
