The Southeast Missouri State men’s basketball team’s run in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament came to an end with a loss to eventual champion Eastern Kentucky on Thursday. “We felt pretty good going into that tournament,” coach Dickey Nutt said on his radio show on SEMO ESPN 1220 Monday afternoon. It was the fourth straight year Southeast made it to the OVC tournament and the second year in a row that Eastern Kentucky eliminated Southeast from title contention. The Redhawks advanced to face EKU by defeating seventh-seeded Eastern Illinois 79-61 in the first round of the tournament last Wednesday. The win marked Southeast’s 18th win of the season to go along with 14 losses. The last time Southeast won 18 games in a single season was 2000-01. The Redhawks trailed behind No. 3 seed EKU the whole game, including by as many as 22 points, and never once commanded a lead before losing 84-76. “It’s not what we expected,” Nutt said during the show. Eastern Kentucky pressured Southeast early on and forced the Redhawks to play catch up all night, Nutt said. “It was pretty heartbreaking,” Southeast forward Tyler Stone said during the show. Stone scored 15 points and six rebounds in his final game as a Redhawk. “We didn’t come to play like we expected we would,” freshman guard Antonious Cleveland said. “We froze and we were disappointed, but coach Nutt taught us to lay an egg and move on.” The end was an early one for the Redhawks, who had expectations to win the conference’s West Division back in October, but one that fell in line with their regular-season performance. Southeast had a good start early in the season. The Redhawks won the Cure OCD Classic in Mexico in December and improved their record to 6-2. Less than a month later, Southeast started to trail behind in OVC play by starting its conference schedule 3-5. “We played well,” Nutt said during the show. “I thought there was a stretch where we didn’t play so well.” Southeast lost to UT Martin in a 79-70 on Feb. 12., dropping the Redhawks’ conference record to 4-8 and keeping them in 10th place in the OVC. With high expectations and a slow start, the reality of not making it to the OVC tournament, which only includes the top eight teams in the conference, hit the Redhawks hard during the final few weeks of the regular season. “We knew we had to just wake up sooner [than] later,” Cleveland said “We couldn’t let the seniors down.” But postseason may continue for Southeast. Nutt announced that he has been contacted about participating in a postseason invitational tournament, although no formal announcement will be made until next week and the team may not receive an invite. Practice resumes on Tuesday and Nutt said the future looks bright for Southeast. The team has three scholarships to give away for next year and he said he sees a lot of potential in his returning players. Transfer, J.J. Thompson, who last played at Houston, will be a senior next year and Nutt has high hopes for him. “He’s going to bring high character,” Nutt said during the show. “He’s going to be very explosive. He’s going to make a difference on our team.” The Redhawks bounced back from their losing streak and won four out of five games during one stretch in February, including three in a row over UT Martin, Jacksonville State and Eastern Illinois, all which brought the Redhawks to a deciding game against Austin Peay at

the Show Me Center on Feb. 27. Southeast booked its ticket to the OVC tournament with a final score 83-80. With only three seconds left, junior Jarekious Bradley scored the last point on a free throw and fans stormed the court and the Redhawks journey to the OVC tournament would continue. Stone, who was named the OVC Preseason Player of the Year, had 20 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Bradley who made 16 points, Nino Johnson with 14, Cleveland with 12 and Josh Langford with 11. Southeast continued its winning streak during its last regular-season game against rival Murray State with a 118-115 win in double overtime. Cleveland scored seven points in overtime and gave a three-point lead to Southeast but the Racer’s T.J. Sapp scored two free throws, narrowing Southeast to a one point lead. Cleveland scored 12 points during the game and averaged 9.1 points during the season. “He exploded [this season]. I thought we saw his talent even go to another level,” Nutt said about Cleveland during the show. “He’s a total package.” Freshman guard Jamaal Calvin, who initially started as a walk on for Southeast, shot two free throws and Johnson dunked the ball as the buzzer went off. Fans rushed the court in celebration but were soon called off, and Johnson was called for a technical for hanging on the rim and the clock remained with .4 seconds left. Murray State failed to score on its last possession to seal the Redhawks’ win. The win came in the final home game for seniors Stone and Lucas Nutt. For some of his coaching career, Nutt has played a double role on and off the court by being a father and coach to two players, Logan and Lucas Nutt. Logan Nutt played for his father at both Arkansas State and Southeast. He completed his basketball career in the 2011-2012 season and followed in his father’s footsteps by taking an assistant coaching job at Culver-Stockton College in the fall. Lucas Nutt will leave a mark on Southeast. He broke the Southeast record for all-time assists on Jan. 29 against University of Missouri-Kansas. The previous record was held by Dwayne Rutherford in 1990 with a total of 541 assists. Lucas Nutt averaged six assists per game this season and ended the year with a total of 191 assists. His all-time assists record now stands at 609. Cleveland said that Stone and Nutt both taught him a lot throughout the year on how to improve his game for the next three years. “We’re gonna miss [Tyler] and Lucas,” Nutt said during his show. Stone and Bradley and both were named to the all-Ohio Valley Conference team. Stone received first-team honors and Bradley received all-newcomer accolades and second-team honors. Stone announced on Monday during the radio show that he was invited to Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Virginia for a NBA pre-draft camp. Sixty-four players receive invites. “It’s a big opportunity,” Stone said. Stone averaged 19.3 points per game and finished his careeer as Southeast’s fifth leading scorer of all time. “He made us a better shooting team,” Nutt said. “He played like he was player of the year.” Bradley battled an injury in the second half of the season but still ranked second among the other Redhawks. He averaged 19.0 points per game and led Southeast with 69 III-point field goals. He was also named the OVC Newcomer of the Week seven times this season. “We have improved every year, but it’s time to break that door down,” Nutt said during the show. “We’ve got to take another step [forward].

PROFESSOR retires after 35 years at Southeast AFTER TEACHING AND RESEARCHING THE WEST NILE VIRUS DR. CHRISTINA FRAZIER WILL LIVE IN NEW YORK AND FLORIDA

Biology professor Dr. Christina Frazier to retire after summer JIM SPENCE ARROW REPORTER

A฀long฀and฀productive฀career฀is฀about฀to฀come฀ to฀a฀close.฀Dr.฀Christina฀L.฀Frazier฀will฀begin฀ a฀new฀life฀in฀the฀fall,฀no฀longer฀worried฀about฀ things฀like฀grading฀papers฀and฀keeping฀up฀ with฀a฀grade฀book฀or฀calling฀roll.฀Frazier฀has฀ been฀been฀lecturing฀since฀before฀many฀of฀her฀ students’฀parents฀were฀born฀as฀an฀arbovirologist฀in฀the฀biology฀department.฀After฀receiving฀ a฀Ph.D.฀from฀Yale฀University,฀Southeast฀Missouri฀State฀University฀has฀had฀her฀as฀a฀professor฀for฀more฀than฀35฀years.฀As฀an฀arborvirologist,฀a฀person฀who฀specializes฀in฀a฀knowledge฀ of฀air-borne฀insect฀diseases,฀she฀has฀tested฀ mosquitoes฀for฀bacteria฀every฀summer฀for฀ several฀years฀for฀the฀entire฀state.

Q: What have you done during your time at Southeast? A:฀Well฀I’ve฀taught,฀and฀that’s฀my฀major฀job฀ and฀my฀major฀joy.฀I฀hope฀that฀I’ve฀helped฀the฀ kids฀learn฀what฀they฀needed฀to฀learn฀for฀their฀ careers.฀For฀about฀10฀to฀12฀years฀I฀worked฀in฀ the฀office฀of฀the฀Provost.฀I฀was฀helping฀with฀ academic฀data฀assessment,฀I฀was฀actually฀ creating฀the฀data฀myself฀and฀in฀several฀cases,฀ figuring฀out฀how฀to฀do฀it,฀what฀we฀needed฀to฀ measure฀and฀some฀tricks฀to฀go฀about฀measuring฀it.

Q: What has been the best part about working at Southeast?

Obviously฀we’ve฀built฀new฀buildings฀and฀ our฀facilities฀have฀improved.฀When฀I฀worked฀ in฀the฀Provost฀office฀I฀saw฀it฀become฀more฀of฀ a฀data-driven฀campus.฀And฀then฀of฀course฀ there’s฀the฀whole฀technology฀that’s฀come฀in฀ with฀teaching.฀I฀joke฀with฀my฀students฀[that]฀ I฀went฀to฀college฀with฀a฀state฀of฀the฀art฀technology:฀my฀dad’s฀log-log฀K&E฀slide฀rule฀and฀a฀ manual฀typewriter฀with฀a฀scientific฀keyboard.฀ Texas฀Instruments฀had฀just฀come฀out฀with฀a฀ little฀calculator฀that฀added,฀subtracted,฀multiplied฀and฀divided,฀so฀when฀I฀was฀in฀graduate฀ school,฀we฀did฀mainframe฀when฀you฀wrote฀ code.฀Now฀I’m฀teaching฀a฀webinar,฀so฀I฀try฀to฀ keep฀up฀with฀technology฀the฀best฀I฀can.

Q: When did the West Nile virus come and how has its introduction afected your career? A:฀It฀started฀with฀the฀flood฀in฀1993,฀and฀that฀ was฀the฀first฀year฀that฀we฀did฀the฀testing.฀Since฀ I’ve฀been฀here฀we’ve฀run฀the฀mosquito฀lab.฀ We’ve฀worked฀with฀the฀state,฀and฀especially฀ St.฀Louis฀County,฀to฀try฀to฀find฀insect-borne฀ viruses฀and฀figure฀out฀where฀they฀were.฀Then฀ when฀West฀Nile฀came฀we฀became฀the฀lab฀for฀ the฀state฀that฀tested฀both฀the฀mosquitoes฀and฀ the฀birds.฀Now฀we’ll฀transfer฀up฀to฀St.฀Louis฀ County฀all฀of฀the฀operations.฀What฀we’ve฀done฀ is฀train฀all฀of฀the฀public฀health฀departments฀in฀ the฀state฀to฀collect฀the฀mosquitoes฀and฀send฀ them฀down฀to฀us.฀Then฀we’ve฀tested฀them฀to฀ see฀if฀they฀were฀carrying฀West฀Nile.฀A฀lot฀of฀students฀have฀gotten฀their฀theses฀out฀of฀it,฀and฀a฀ lot฀of฀students฀have฀gotten฀summer฀employment฀out฀of฀it.฀And฀I฀think฀we’ve฀done฀a฀good฀ service฀for฀the฀state.

A:฀The฀students฀that฀I’ve฀gotten฀to฀work฀with,฀ especially฀ones฀that฀have฀done฀theses฀with฀ me฀and฀things฀like฀that,฀so฀I’ve฀gotten฀to฀know฀ them฀better.฀That฀has฀to฀be฀the฀best฀part.

Q: Does your laboratory only test for the presence of West Nile?

Q: What changes have you seen in the time you’ve been here?

A:฀Well,฀we฀test฀for฀West฀Nile฀now,฀but฀before฀ when฀we฀got฀more฀money฀from฀the฀feds,฀we฀ tested฀for฀other฀things,฀too.฀We฀tested฀for฀St.฀ Louis฀encephalitis,฀we฀tested฀for฀something฀ called฀lacrosse฀encephalitis,฀for฀western฀ equine฀encephalitis฀and฀for฀eastern฀equine฀ encephalitis.฀So฀we฀tested฀for฀all฀of฀those฀ when฀we฀had฀the฀money฀from฀the฀feds,฀but฀ we฀had฀to฀slim฀down฀our฀operations฀and฀West฀ Nile฀was฀the฀most฀important฀thing.

A:฀Oh฀boy,฀that’s฀a฀lot฀of฀time.฀One฀of฀the฀ones฀ that’s฀very฀important฀to฀me฀because฀I฀was฀ chair฀of฀the฀first฀committee฀that฀did฀anything฀ about฀it฀was฀we฀have฀gender฀equity฀in฀athletics.฀For฀a฀long฀time฀what฀women’s฀athletics฀ got฀in฀the฀way฀of฀financing฀was฀legal฀but฀really฀pretty฀awful.฀They฀were฀riding฀to฀games฀in฀ the฀coach’s฀car฀and฀making฀sandwiches฀and฀ things฀like฀that.฀I฀think฀that’s฀what฀one฀is฀—฀ the฀commitment฀to฀gender฀equity.

Q: Is your specialty as an entomologist?

Biology professor Dr. Christina Frazier talks with reporter Jim Spence about her research and time at Southeast. Photo by Linda Spence A:฀No,฀no,฀no,฀I’m฀not฀an฀entomologist.฀I฀am฀ what฀is฀known฀as฀a฀arbovirologist.฀Arbo฀for฀ arthropod-borne,฀virologist.฀I฀know฀the฀mosquitoes฀that฀I฀need฀to฀know฀to฀get฀the฀ones฀ that฀carry฀my฀viruses.฀And฀other฀than฀that,฀so฀I฀ know฀female฀mosquitoes฀very฀well,฀but฀I฀don’t฀ know฀male฀mosquitoes฀and฀I฀don’t฀know฀ticks฀ or฀any฀other฀of฀the฀little฀creepy฀crawly฀things.

Q: Is it true that mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide? A:฀Absolutely!฀I฀tell฀everybody฀if฀you฀don’t฀ want฀to฀get฀bitten฀by฀a฀mosquito,฀don’t฀exhale฀ because฀that’s฀how฀basically฀all฀the฀blood-feeding฀insects฀hone฀in฀because฀all฀vertebrates฀ exhale฀CO2.฀And฀so฀as฀long฀as฀they฀can฀hone฀ in฀on฀a฀CO2฀gradient,฀they’ll฀find฀something฀ to฀bite.฀She฀will฀find฀something฀to฀bite,฀by฀the฀ way,฀only฀female฀mosquitoes฀bite.฀They฀need฀ the฀blood฀to฀lay฀their฀eggs.฀So฀I฀tell฀everybody฀ that฀when฀they฀swat฀their฀arm,฀“That’s฀mosquito฀birth฀control.”

Q: What are your plans starting next fall? A:฀I’m฀going฀to฀move฀back฀to฀New฀York฀state,฀ among฀my฀family,฀as฀long฀as฀I฀can฀stay฀up฀ there฀with฀the฀weather.฀I’d฀stay฀up฀there฀year฀ round,฀but฀I’m฀also฀smart฀enough฀to฀know฀ that฀when฀you฀get฀very฀old฀you฀need฀to฀have฀ somebody฀with฀a฀snowmobile฀to฀get฀to฀you.฀ Then฀in฀the฀winter฀I’ll฀be฀in฀Florida฀with฀a฀ whole฀bunch฀of฀people฀I฀went฀to฀graduate฀ school฀with.฀We’ve฀got฀ourselves฀through฀graduate฀school;฀we’ve฀decided฀we’re฀going฀to฀get฀

ourselves฀through฀old฀age.฀We’ve฀been฀getting฀ ourselves฀through฀all฀of฀our฀mothers฀dying,฀ and฀we’ve฀done฀this฀cooperatively.฀We’re฀all฀ going฀to฀be฀living฀in฀the฀same฀area.฀I฀was฀very฀ active฀in฀Red฀Cross฀and฀Girl฀Scouts฀when฀I฀ was฀in฀Connecticut,฀and฀I฀hope฀to฀get฀back฀ into฀those.฀I฀hope฀to฀do฀some฀work฀for฀Habitat฀for฀Humanity.฀My฀friends฀want฀me฀to฀run฀ for฀the฀mosquito฀board.฀And฀maybe฀I’ll฀get฀to฀ teach฀a฀webinar฀every฀now฀and฀then.

Q: What are your hopes for your students? A:฀That฀they฀learn฀to฀think.฀I฀think฀that’s฀ become฀more฀and฀more฀important.฀I’ve฀gone฀ from฀where฀we฀supplied฀the฀information฀ and฀textbooks฀supplied฀the฀information฀to฀ trying฀to฀teach฀them฀to฀use฀written฀sources฀—฀ how฀to฀look฀at฀a฀newspaper฀article฀and฀know฀ whether฀or฀not฀it฀was฀legitimate฀or฀full฀of฀it. Now฀it’s฀the฀same฀thing,฀but฀we’re฀trying฀to฀ teach฀to฀look฀at฀Internet฀resources฀and฀make฀ sure฀that฀they’re฀using฀the฀right฀ones฀and฀ using฀them฀properly.฀We฀don’t฀convey฀information฀that฀much฀anymore,฀we฀try฀to฀teach฀ them฀how฀to฀get฀it฀because฀you’re฀lecturing฀ and฀somebody฀sitting฀in฀the฀back฀has฀their฀ smartphone฀going฀and฀they’ll฀holler,฀“Hey,฀I฀ just฀found฀this฀that฀has฀to฀do฀with฀what฀you’re฀ talking฀about.”฀So฀the฀information฀gathering฀ has฀become฀much฀more฀of฀a฀shared฀experience฀between฀faculty฀and฀students.฀So฀our฀ job฀has฀become฀less฀and฀less฀to฀tell฀them฀and฀ more฀and฀more฀to฀guide฀them฀in฀how฀to฀find฀it฀ and฀how฀to฀use฀it.฀That’s฀the฀important฀thing:฀ once฀you฀get฀it,฀can฀you฀use฀it?฀Can฀you฀work฀ with฀it?฀Can฀you฀synthesize?฀That’s฀the฀big฀ change฀I’ve฀seen฀in฀teaching.

What is the best class you have taken at Southeast so far?

Emily Beninato My favorite class that I’ve taken at SEMO is the one I’m currently in. It’s Phonetics taught by Dr. Edwards.

HOW to spend a snow day MEMBERS OF THE A-TEAM DISCUSS HOW THEY HAVE SPENT THEIR RECENT SNOW DAYS AGATHE POMPON A-TEAM MEMBER

I฀love฀snow฀days.฀Any฀day฀that฀gives฀me฀a฀valid฀excuse฀to฀ stay฀in฀the฀house฀and฀watch฀an฀entire฀season฀of฀a฀show฀ on฀Netflix฀is฀OK฀with฀me.฀Unfortunately฀during฀our฀most฀ recent฀snow฀day,฀I฀was฀unable฀to฀enjoy฀that฀luxury.฀Instead,฀I฀spent฀my฀snow฀day฀on฀a฀sloppy฀Interstate฀55฀driving฀back฀to฀Cape฀from฀St.฀Louis. I฀decided฀to฀go฀back฀home฀to฀St.฀Louis฀for฀the฀weekend฀ to฀celebrate฀Mardi฀Gras฀in฀Soulard,฀the฀second฀largest฀ Mardi฀Gras฀celebration฀in฀the฀country.฀Normally฀being฀ No.฀2฀is฀nothing฀I฀take฀pride฀in,฀but฀in฀this฀instance฀it฀ didn’t฀matter.฀I฀had฀an฀amazing฀time฀and฀felt฀both฀honored฀and฀privileged฀to฀have฀been฀a฀part฀of฀the฀festivities. Due฀to฀the฀ice฀storms฀taking฀place฀both฀in฀St.฀Louis฀and฀ Cape฀Girardeau,฀I฀decided฀it฀would฀be฀a฀good฀idea฀to฀wait฀ until฀the฀next฀day฀to฀make฀the฀haul฀back.฀Since฀classes฀were฀cancelled฀I฀had฀time,฀which฀was฀ good฀because฀I฀would฀need฀plenty฀of฀it.฀There฀were฀still฀slick฀spots฀on฀the฀road฀and฀all฀the฀drivers฀on฀the฀road,฀including฀myself฀were฀taking฀all฀precautions,฀so฀unfortunately฀I฀spent฀my฀ entire฀snow฀day฀pretending฀I฀was฀on฀an฀episode฀of฀the฀History฀Channel’s฀“Ice฀Road฀Truckers”฀ as฀opposed฀to฀lying฀in฀my฀comfortable฀bed฀watching฀one.

Snow฀days฀are฀always฀welcome฀in฀my฀life.฀I฀love฀being฀ able฀to฀kick฀back,฀relax฀and฀enjoy฀a฀long฀day฀of฀nothing.฀ The฀only฀energy฀I฀usually฀exert฀on฀a฀snow฀day฀is฀getting฀ up฀to฀go฀eat,฀or฀if฀I฀have฀a฀friend฀to฀sled฀with,฀I’ll฀usually฀ muster฀up฀enough฀strength฀for฀that.฀This฀past฀snow฀day,฀ however,฀was฀a฀little฀different฀for฀me. I฀recently฀got฀engaged,฀so฀I’m฀in฀full-fledged฀wedding฀ planner฀mode.฀Lucky฀for฀me฀my฀fiancé฀was฀in฀town฀this฀ past฀weekend฀(he฀lives฀in฀Tennessee)฀so฀we฀could฀start฀ narrowing฀down฀specifics฀about฀our฀big฀day.฀I฀think฀he฀ was฀less฀enthused฀than฀I฀was,฀but฀he฀still฀sat฀and฀listened฀ to฀me฀gab฀about฀caterers฀and฀photographers฀and฀whatever฀else฀for฀basically฀the฀entire฀weekend.฀He฀was฀a฀really฀ good฀sport฀about฀it,฀too.฀Not฀many฀guys฀want฀to฀give฀up฀ their฀Saturday฀to฀walk฀around฀Bed,฀Bath฀and฀Beyond฀for฀ three฀hours฀making฀a฀wedding฀registry,฀but฀he฀rarely฀complained฀and฀we฀actually฀had฀fun. Needless฀to฀say,฀I฀had฀a฀great฀weekend฀and฀snow฀day.฀I฀checked฀a฀few฀items฀off฀of฀my฀to-do฀ list,฀I฀spent฀some฀quality฀time฀with฀my฀fiancé. AMBER CASON A-TEAM MEMBER

I฀was฀asleep฀most฀of฀Monday฀because฀I฀฀was฀my฀sick,฀but฀ on฀the฀week฀of฀snow฀days฀where฀I฀wasn’t฀sick฀I฀was฀sleeping฀as฀well.฀I฀really฀love฀sleep,฀and฀I฀usually฀get฀a฀lot฀of฀it฀ on฀off฀days฀and฀weekends.฀The฀mini-winter฀break฀was฀no฀ exception.฀However,฀there฀were฀things฀I฀needed฀to฀leave฀ home฀to฀do,฀but฀before฀I฀could฀do฀them฀I฀had฀to฀make฀ one฀snow฀angel.฀I฀then฀proceeded฀to฀panic฀when฀my฀ phone฀was฀covered฀in฀snow฀because฀of฀it. I฀had฀to฀go฀out฀the฀Sunday฀before฀our฀snow฀day฀to฀get฀ some฀dinner฀and฀the฀parking฀lot฀stairs฀at฀Cheney฀were฀ absolutely฀covered฀in฀ice.฀I฀slid฀down฀them,฀and฀it฀was฀a฀ wild฀ride฀for฀the฀first฀five฀seconds.฀After฀that฀I฀had฀gone฀ off฀kilter฀and฀had฀a฀bumpy฀ride฀the฀rest฀of฀the฀way฀down.฀ I฀found฀it฀absolutely฀hilarious฀that฀even฀though฀I฀hit฀the฀ stairs,฀they฀were฀so฀icy฀and฀slick฀that฀it฀didn’t฀stop฀my฀ momentum฀at฀all.฀I฀landed฀in฀the฀snow฀and฀was฀fine,฀but฀I฀was฀laughing฀like฀a฀mad฀man. I฀haven’t฀liked฀how฀much฀snow฀we’ve฀had฀and฀the฀most฀recent฀fall฀has฀literally฀kept฀my฀ professor฀from฀her฀class฀because฀the฀weather฀has฀her฀stuck฀in฀Arkansas,฀but฀they฀are฀great฀ opportunities฀to฀rekindle฀that฀inner฀child฀mentality.฀Go฀out฀there,฀have฀a฀bit฀of฀fun,฀even฀if฀it฀ doesn’t฀go฀according฀to฀plan. As฀I฀waited฀longingly฀to฀hear฀whether฀or฀not฀we฀would฀ have฀school,฀the฀list฀of฀amazing฀things฀I฀would฀do฀if฀ we฀were฀given฀a฀snow฀day฀just฀ran฀through฀my฀head:฀ sledding,฀make฀hot฀cocoa,฀do฀all฀of฀the฀homework฀that฀I฀ had฀piling฀up฀and฀so฀much฀more.฀Then,฀finally,฀the฀texts฀ came฀ringing฀through,฀letting฀me฀know฀that฀all฀of฀our฀ snow฀day฀dreams฀had฀come฀true. “No฀school!” “Time฀to฀turn฀up!” “Get฀out฀of฀bed!” So฀I฀ran฀down฀the฀halls฀of฀my฀house฀and฀got฀together฀ with฀a฀few฀of฀my฀sisters฀to฀start฀planning฀all฀of฀the฀great฀ ways฀we฀were฀going฀to฀spend฀our฀Sunday฀night฀and฀our฀ snow฀day.฀Three฀hours฀later฀we฀were฀all฀laying฀on฀the฀ couch฀in฀our฀pajamas฀talking,฀eating฀and฀laughing฀at฀ the฀Oscars.฀There฀was฀no฀“turning฀up”฀or฀even฀bothering฀to฀try฀to฀socialize฀with฀the฀outside฀ world.฀We฀spent฀that฀night฀simply฀hanging฀out฀with฀one฀another฀and฀still฀had฀the฀best฀time,฀ and฀the฀official฀snow฀day฀the฀next฀day฀was฀not฀so฀different.฀I฀spent฀my฀snow฀day฀with฀my฀ friends,฀boyfriend฀and฀my฀sisters,฀and฀I฀would฀not฀have฀had฀it฀any฀other฀way.

I฀think฀it฀is฀safe฀to฀say฀that฀Southeast฀Missouri฀State฀ University฀has฀had฀its฀fair฀share฀of฀winter฀weather฀this฀ season. Because฀of฀the฀abundance฀of฀snow฀days฀that฀SEMO฀ has฀had฀in฀the฀past฀couple฀months,฀I฀pretty฀much฀have฀a฀ regular฀snow฀day฀schedule฀down฀to฀a฀T.฀Living฀on฀campus฀is฀really฀limiting฀considering฀every฀sidewalk฀and฀parking฀lot฀is฀iced฀over,฀so฀I฀tend฀to฀stay฀inside฀as฀much฀as฀ possible. I฀first฀start฀out฀by฀sleeping฀in฀‘til฀at฀least฀noon฀in฀order฀ to฀catch฀up฀on฀some฀much฀needed฀sleep.฀Second,฀I฀put฀ on฀my฀snowboots฀and฀cozy฀winter฀jacket฀to฀make฀a฀risky฀ journey฀down฀to฀Towers฀Cafe฀for฀a฀lovely฀brunch.฀After฀a฀ breakfast฀of฀champions,฀I฀snuggle฀back฀up฀in฀my฀bed฀for฀ an฀all-day฀Netflix฀marathon.฀It฀doesn’t฀get฀much฀better฀ than฀that,฀folks.

The฀best฀part฀about฀snow฀days฀is฀the฀day฀before฀they฀cancel฀school.฀It฀always฀starts฀with฀a฀very฀obvious฀statement฀ that฀outside฀is฀covered฀with฀snow.฀You฀half฀joke฀with฀your฀ friends฀that฀it฀would฀be฀great฀not฀to฀have฀class฀tomorrow.฀ As฀the฀day฀goes฀through฀and฀the฀snow฀on฀the฀ground฀ grows฀thicker฀so฀does฀your฀hope. The฀idea฀of฀not฀going฀to฀class฀is฀now฀in฀everybody’s฀ mind. At฀the฀end฀of฀the฀afternoon,฀there฀is฀always฀this฀person฀who฀heard฀from฀a฀friend฀that฀heard฀from฀a฀friend฀that฀ classes฀are฀cancelled.฀But฀still฀nothing฀on฀the฀portal. Then฀the฀moment฀arrives.฀Explosion฀of฀statuses฀ on฀Facebook฀from฀students฀screaming฀for฀joy.฀Multiple฀texts฀from฀your฀friends฀already฀making฀plans฀for฀the฀ night.฀Feverishly,฀you฀go฀on฀the฀SEMO฀website฀because฀ you฀need฀to฀see฀with฀your฀own฀eyes฀that฀it฀is฀true.฀“Main฀campus฀will฀be฀closed.”฀Tears฀of฀ relief.฀Excitement.฀Freedom.฀The฀feeling฀is฀overwhelming.฀The฀weekend฀now฀has฀three฀days.฀ Anything฀is฀possible฀for฀tomorrow. And฀the฀next฀day฀comes฀and฀you฀do฀nothing.฀I฀woke฀up฀at฀4฀p.m.,฀watched฀three฀movies฀at฀ a฀friend’s฀house฀and฀went฀back฀to฀sleep.฀But฀it฀was฀great!
