Study analyzes Southeast’s salaries, suggests many employees receive raises Consulting company recommends 251 of 978 Southeast employees salaries to be raised ANDREA GILS ONLINE MANAGING EDITOR
Astudycarriedoutbyanexternal consultingcompanyhiredbythe administrationofSoutheastMissouri StateUniversityshowedthatmany faculty,staffandclerical,technicaland servicecouncilemployeesatSoutheast are,onaverage,paidlessthan employeesatotherselected,comparableuniversities. Thecompanyprovidedrecommendationsandwaystoimplementthem toclosethegapandallowSoutheastto hireandretaintopqualityprofessionalswhilestillremainingcompetitive inthemarket. J.W.Terrill,thecompanyhiredby Southeast,recommendedthatthe salariesof251ofSoutheast’s978 employeesberaised,althoughKathy Mangels,thevicepresidentoffinance andadministrationatSoutheast,said moreorfeweremployeesmayreceivea salaryadjustmentbecausenotallofthe recommendationsmaybeadoptedor theymaybemodified. TheBudgetReviewCommitteeset asidesomefundingtoincrease employeesalariesinspringforthe fiscalyear2014budgetthatstartedJuly 1.Thegoalistoimplement adjustmentsinJanuary. “That’swhythereisfundinginplace toimplementinJanuary,”Mangels said.“Itwasadecisionofthegroup,
collectively,thatthatmoneywasvery important,thatwelookatsalariesand thatsomeofourfundingbesetasideto addressit,sowewon’trequireanynew fundingforthisfiscalyear.” Mangelsaddedthatthemoneythe committeesetasideinspringmaynot initiallyfundalloftherecommendations,andifthatisthecase,somemay bephasedinlater. “Untilwealldecideontherecommendationsandhowwewantto implementthem,wecan’tsaywhatthe finaldollar[amount]is,”Mangelssaid.
“Until we all decide on the recommendations and how we want to implement them, we can’t say what the final dollar [amount] is.” Kathy Mangels Mangelssaidthataspartofthe university’scompensationphilosophy, theadministrationwantedtolookat howmuchfacultyandstaffcurrently arepaidinrelationtothemarket.The aimofthestudywastoknowwhat Southeastneedstoofferinorderto recruitandretainthequalityofpeople thatitwantsandfindoutwaystomake surethatSoutheastremainscompetitiveinwageswithinthemarketinthe future. DirectorofHumanResourcesJim Cooksaidtheuniversityhasdonetwo internalassessmentsinthepast13 years. “Wewantedtogetaconsultantthat hastheyearsofexperienceinhuman
resourceandincompensationtohelp usout,”Mangelssaid.“Wewantto makesurethatwearegettingthebest datathatisoutthere.” JWTsampled18universitiesinthe regionandcalculatedthemedian salariesatthoseuniversitiesto compareSoutheast’ssalaries.The entireSoutheastfacultybodyanda majorityofstaffmemberswerealso providedfeedback. “Wearepleasedthattherehasbeen goodparticipationinthisprocess,” Mangelssaid. Theadministrationgaveeach employeegroupthathascouncilsor committeestheabilitytodecidehow theywantedtocollectthefeedback fromtheemployees.Mangelssaid facultyheldopenforumsandcarried outanonymoussurveyswhilestaffand CTSsharedcommentsthroughemails totheirsupervisorsandanonymous surveys. JWTlistedseveralconcernsthat eachemployeegroupexpressedinits report. Thefacultysenateandadministrativecouncilsaidthattherehavebeen severalyearsofnopayincreases resultinginwagecompressionandthat familyhealthcarebenefitsareexpensive.Thefacultysenatealsosaidthatit isdifficulttoretainchairpersons becauseofthelowpay,amongother concerns. Theprofessionalandadministrative councilalsoaddressedpaycompressionandlittleflexibilityinstartingpay, whichhasresultedinlossofcandidates.Itsaidthatjobdutiesincrease withoutreevaluationoftheposition andthattheperformancemanagementsystemdoesnotdifferentiatetop performers,amongothercomments.

TheSoutheastMissouriStateUniversityvolleyballteamwaslookingtoget backontrackinOhioValleyConference playagainstJacksonvilleStateonSaturdayafternoon. Itdidthatbyimprovingto.500,both overall(9-9)andintheOhioValleyConference(2-2).TheRedhawksdominatedtowininstraightsets25-15,25-17 and25-15. TheRedhawksimprovedto7-0on theyearwhentakingthefirstset.They led15-14intheopeningsetbeforescoringeightconsecutivepointstotake control. SoutheastMissouriStateUniversity’sequestrianteamhas entereditsfourthyearofcompetitionandisshowingcontinuedgrowth. LastyeartheequestrianteammovedfromFoxRunStables inCapeGirardeautoitscurrenthomeattheRemleyEquestrianCenter,whichisalsoinCapeGirardeau.Afterthemove thecentermadeanadditiontoitsbarnanddoubledthesize ofitsindoorarenatohelpaccommodatethenumberofriders andhorsesontheteam.Theteam’scoachSuAnneRemley ownstheRemleyEquestrianCenterandgivesdailyridinglessonsthere. Theequestrianteamnearlydoubleditsnumberofmembersthisyearwith27memberstotal.Remleysaidanumberof teammembersaredoingthetraditionalEnglish,orhunt-seat, ridingclass,andsomearestartingtheWesternstyleriding classthatisnewtotheteamthisyear. “Wehavesomethatareonboth,somethataredoingjust huntandsomethataredoingjustWestern,”Remleysaid.“I wouldsay10areontheWesternteam,andofthose,Ithink fourofthemaregoingtodoboth.” TwonewWesternhorseshavebeenaddedtothecenterto helptheteamtrainfortheseason’supcomingmeets.Thecenterhas11horsestotalthatteammemberscanuseforlessons. ThefalldanceseriesattheSoutheastMissouriStateUniversityRiverCampusbeginsWednesdaywithNewDanceHorizonsII. ThisisthesecondyearinarowthatNewDanceHorizons willperformatSoutheast.AccordingtoDr.MarcStrauss,theateranddanceprofessoratSoutheast,whileNewDanceHorizonsIIhasthesamedancecompaniesastheperformancelast year,hebelievesthisyear’sperformancewillbemoreextensive.Straussalsosaidthattheaudiencecanexpectawide rangeofdancestylesandmulti-talenteddancers. “Lastyeartheypickedfourfemalechoreographers,”Strauss said.“ThisyearIbelievetherewillbemoreofamixbecause eventhoughtheyareusingthesamefourSt.Louisdance companies,therearenewchoreographers.Onechoreographerisaformerdancerwhohashisowndancecompanyin Minneapolis.ThenthereareacoupleofwomenwhoarechoreographingamodernpieceforLeverageDanceTheatre. Dr.JosephLowJr.wasoneofthemostwellknownprofessorstohaveevertaughtat SoutheastMissouriStateUniversity.He taughtintheDepartmentofSpeechCommunicationfrom1962to1998wherehewas belovedbystudentsandco-workers.Even afterheretired,LowJr.continuedtoactively supportandpromotetheuniversity. “IknewJoefor40years,”saidDr.Tom Harte,retiredprofessorofspeechcommunicationatSoutheastandcurrenthostofCaffé ConcertoatKRCU.“Hewasalwaysinvolved insupportingathleticsandhomecoming.He wasaboosterwhowouldalwayspromotethe universityinanywayhecould.” LowJr.earnedhisPh.D.atage27and spenthisentireteachingcareeratSoutheast. DuringhistimeatSoutheast,LowJr.servedas adebatecoach,assistantdirectorofforensics andagraduatestudiesadviser. Healsodevelopedandtaughtclassesin publicspeaking,interpersonalcommunication,managerialcommunicationandgroup discussion. Inretirement,LowJr.wasactiveinthe RotaryClubandwasactivelyinvolvedinfundraisingforSt.FrancisMedicalCenter.He andHartealsoweretheco-foundersofMy Daddy’sCheesecake. Thenewestresidencehalloncampus,New Hall,ismakingchangesinthewayResidence Lifestaffhopestoaccommodatestudentsin thefuture. Thisstepisconvertingresidencehallsfrom amixedmajorssettingtounifiedfloorsthat featurelearningcommunities. “Thelearningcommunitystyledfloors areveryunique,”NewHalldirectorAllieWiskersaid.“Studentsofthesamegeneralarea ofstudyliveonthesamefloorandareencouragedtoworkwitheachotherforacademics. Mostofthemareunderclassmen,butwedo haveafewjuniorsandseniors,too,which reallyhelpsyoungerstudentsoutwithdifficultwork.” Wiskersaidtherearethreefloorscurrently usingthelearningcommunitystyle.Educationmajorsliveonthefirstfloor,business majorsonhalfofthesecondfloorandscience majorsonhalfofthethirdfloor. NewHallhasanadditionalfourthfloorthat isatraditionalmixofstudentsinasuite-style settingmuchlikeMerickHallhas.Onthefirst floornearthelobbyisamulti-purposeroom, whichisnotonlyusedformeetingsbythe NewHallstaffbutwillalsobeusedforUI100 classesforeducationmajors. Themulti-purposeroom,setupmuchlike ameetingroom,isequippedwitheverything neededfortheclassroomexperienceincludingacomputer,projectorandwhiteboard.

ThestudentsinHP450wereactuallyrequiredtosignaconfidentialityformstating theywouldnotrevealmember’snamesor anythingtheyseethroughoutthedocuments. “Thisallexcitesme,we’renotsupposedto readeverydocument,butIactuallywantto,” HistoricalpreservationseniorJenSchwent said.“Theydatebacktolike1847.” Onceallthedocumentshavebeenarchivedstudentswillthenwriteafindingaid. Thispaperwillhelptosupportthemasonsin morewaysthanoneregardingthecareofthe documents. “Thefindingaidwillnotonlysaywhat’sin eachboxbutalsogiveabriefhistoryofthe organizationandcollection,”Santorosaid.“It willdescribeanykindofpreservation/conservationconcernsforthecollection.Most ofthiscollectionisverystable,butthereare afewthingswemightaskthatthemasonsto useverycarefully,”Santorosaid.

AccordingtoDr.VictorWilburn,associateprofessorofchilddevelopment andtheprogramdirectorfortheVICTORYprogramatSoutheastMissouri StateUniversity,domesticviolenceisn’t limitedtomarriedcouples,andanybodycanbecomeavictim.VICTORY isaprogramthatpromotesawareness aboutdatinganddomesticviolence, sexualassaultandstalking. Wilburnsaidthatoneofthebiggest signsforsomeoneinanabusiverelationshipisisolation.Althoughhesaid thattherewassomeexpectationofisolationinanewrelationship,ifthepersonwasknowntobeoutgoingandthen becomescompletelyisolatedfromtheir friends,itisabigwarningsign. Althoughphysicalabuseisamuch easiertospotthanemotionalorsexual, forthoseinapossibleabusiverelationship,therearewarningsignstolook for.Possessiveness,blaming,belittling andisolatingapartnerfromfriendsand familyaresomesignstotakenoteofifa personthinksheorsheisinanabusive relationship,accordingtodomesticviolence.org. WilburnandAllisonLeonard,the directorofoperationsfortheSafe
HouseforWomen,bothacknowledgedthatwomenarenottheonlypossiblevictims. “It’snotrandomactsofviolence,” Leonardsaid,inreferencetopeople beingabused. Wilburnalsonotedthatthestatistics forcollegeathletesandfraternitymembersareshockinglylowerthanwhatis coveredinnationalnews. “Eightyto85percentofattacksareby someonethatthevictimknows,”Wilburnsaid.“Oneinfourpeoplehave beenavictimofdomesticviolence.” LeonardandWilburnagreethatthe actualnumbersofpeoplereportingan attackisverylow. Leonardsaidthatshebelievesthisis becauseofasocialstigmathatisattachedtoreportingdomesticviolence.
“Eighty to 85 percent of attacks are by someone that the victim knows. One in four people have been a victim of domestic violence.” Dr. Victor Wilburn Shealsosaidthestigmacouldcome dependingonwhoaperson’sattackeris.Forexample,ifanattackerisa well-knownandalikedmemberofthe community,thevictimismorelikelyto bequietaboutwhathashappenedto

Dr.KevinHamptonisarecentadditionto Southeast’sDepartmentofMusic,andanew faceoncampus.Herecentlytooktheroleas thechairofthemusicdepartment. HamptonhaspreviouslybeenaprofessorofmusicinSavannnah,Ga.,andspecializesinappliedpiano,whichhesaidishistrue joyinlife. Thepianistenthusiasticallyprovided insightonhisrole,alongwithhisinfluence inmusicandhisexcitementtostartthenext chapterofhisprofessionalcareerasanadministratoratSoutheast.

MissouriforfamilyeventseversinceIwasa littlekid,sowhengettingthepositionhereI waslike,“Oh,wow,Cape.Thatwillfeelkind oflikehome.”Idoloveitthough,thisisanice littlecitynow,andI’msurprisedtoseehow muchit’sexpandedsinceI’vebeenaway.

Q: Are those pieces still some of your favorites because they started you out in music? A:Ithinkthosewillalwaysbespecialforme nomatterwhatsincetheydidhaveanearly influenceonme.Sincethen,Idon’twantto saymytasteshavemovedon,butmoreso expandedsogreatly. There’sreallysomuchgreatmusicout there,it’sreally,reallyhardtohaveafavorite. It’shardformetosayifIhaveevenafewfavoritepieces,butyes,thosearedefinitelystill specialtomeandmymusicnow.
Q: What exactly is the role you play in being the new music department chair? A:Basically,Iwouldsaymyroleisnotso muchasdirecting,butfacilitatingbyworking withmycolleaguestofindsolutionstochallengeswemayface,whetherit’scurricular, performanceoranythingelseitmaybe.It’s notsomuchmetellingthemwhatneedsto bedone,it’sgettinginput,tryingtofindconsensusandthenseewhatsolutionswillbe bestforourstudents.
Q: Is there anything upcoming in the music department you are especially looking forward to?

Q: How did you find out about the position here at Southeast? A:Thiswasdonebyanationalsearch,andI sawanadvertisementaboutthepositionlast spring.Itwasacombinationthatappealedto mebackthen,focusingonwantingtomove towardsadministration. IwasatthatpointinmycareerasaprofessorofmusicwhereIthought,“Thisisaninterestingplan,”becauseitwastheadministrativesidealongwithappliedpianoside,which ismytruelove.It’swhyIwentintomusicall
veryinfluentialonmeasakid,onewas Dukas’“TheSorcerer’sApprentice,”andthe otherwas“PeterandtheWolf”byProkovief. Sobylisteningtothoserecordingandbeginningtoreallyhearandunderstandthepiano Iwasimmediatelydrawntoit.Everything justprogressedfromtheretowhereIamhere today.

It’sveryuniquetohaveacampusthathas entireseparatesectiondedicatedtothefine arts,sothesynergyofallthoseperformance opportunitiesinoneplaceisveryappealing tome. ThenIlookatjustthescopeofexperienceandexpertisewehaveherewithinthe musicfaculty.Wehavecomposers,wehave activeperformersinsomanydifferentareas, wehavemusicologyrepresented,wehave everythingfromearlymusictomodernelectronic.Itjustseemedtomelikeawonderful placetobeforcreativityandstimulatingfora musiceducator. MostofallIamexcitedforthestudents thatarehereformusiceducation,whetherit istobeeducatorsthemselvesonedayorto gointoprofessionalperformance.It’salways awonderfulgettingtoworkwithstudentsat differentlevelsandexperiencesandthatare socreative.
