QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED

After Further Education or A-Levels, there are many Higher Education pathways and progression routes to further study or into employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

At SERC, you can access a variety of qualifications at different levels, all of which are recognised by employers and universities. You can also progress within SERC as the table shows. You can click on the link below to find full details of the qualifications. Each course listing will include the relevant entry requirements specific to that course. In all cases, certain GCSE grades may also be required. Industrial or other experience may also be acceptable as part of APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning process).

6

Degree (Level 6) This is a Higher Education qualification that helps you develop a true understanding of a subject. The qualification is designed to help you develop your analytical and writing skills, while developing technical skills for the world of employment. At SERC we offer both full-time and part-time degree options. We also offer a top-up degree option in specialist subjects areas. Foundation Degree (Level 5) This is a Higher Education qualification that combines academic study with workbased learning. Designed jointly by universities, colleges and employers, foundation degrees are available in a range of subjects. They are designed to equip you for a particular area of work, as well as giving you the skills that are useful in any type of job. Following a foundation degree, you can progress to a relevant SERC top-up degree or university to achieve a degree qualification. Foundation degrees provide a clear progression route to a bachelor’s degree programme,or into employment.

Higher Nationals (Level 4 & 5) Higher Nationals are work-related, or vocational, Higher Education qualifications. They focus on learning by doing, and give skills that you can use in a particular job as well as providing opportunities for progression. They are highly valued by employers and can also count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations..

Higher National Certificate, HNC (Level 4) Are level 4 and usually studied full-time over one year or part-time over two years. For those already in employment, a parttime HNC lets you put the technical skills you learn into practice in your current job. HNCs are considered the first year of an HND. They provide progression opportunities to the HND or degree programmes or opportunities into employment. Higher National Diploma, HND (Level 5) Are level 5 and usually studied full-time over one year or part-time over two years. They provide progression opportunities to degree programmes or opportunities into employment.

I really enjoy practical sessions, I love hands on lessons and getting involved. My tutors at SERC have all been amazing, they go above and beyond to help and make sure I am meeting deadlines and submitting work on time. I would like to continue my studies and top up to a full degree, and then I want to get my PGCE as my overall goal is to become a PE teacher.” Carragh Nelson Ulster University Foundation Degree in Sport, Coaching and Fitness

The course covers all aspects of performing arts – including acting, lighting classes, prop design, costume design, sound, and more, so there is something for everyone. The staff are so friendly, they provide you with everything you need and push you to do your best, as well as the tools to build towards any career you want in performing arts. After I complete my course, I’d like to go straight into industry, but it’s great to know I have the option to apply to university if I want as well.

Ellie Hood

Nathan Irvine Pearson BTEC HND in Performing Arts

The course teaches you a lot about tourism, including why people travel to certain places (culture, history, economics, environment), and I particularly enjoyed the management and leadership modules too, as I’d love to enter the corporate and marketing side of the industry. You have quite a bit of freedom on the course– we get taught a lot of theory and then go and write it up ourselves. There is lots of help from tutors as well, but I like the more independent style of learning, which will help prepare me for uni too. HIGHER LEVEL APPRENTICESHIPS

The HLA gives you plenty of options for employment, and I also have the option to go onto university if I want. It’s a huge benefit completing your qualification in partnership with your employer and the college, as you are qualified in industry standard practice – getting 3 years’ experience and a Level 5 qualification at the same time looks great on a CV.
