Equip. Serve. Fulfill.
2019 IMPACT REPORT
From the President Greetings my dear brothers and sisters! If you know anything about Southeastern, you must know that we are boldly and unapologetically a Great Commission school, devoted to the proclamation of the gospel. When Jesus asked his disciples: “who do you say that I am?” the apostle Peter correctly answered, “You are the Christ!” Peter was declaring, “You’re the Promised Seed, the Messiah, the Fulfiller of our hopes, the long-awaited King, the One of whom the prophets spoke, the One the sacrifices and symbols and types all prefigured, the Deliverer, the Savior, the Rescuer.” We are committed that people everywhere hear the news that our Rescuer has come! This indescribable truth is what drives Southeastern in its quest to equip and train gospel proclaimers to GO to every tribe, tongue, people and nation on earth. I am incredibly thankful to God for the gift of your partnership with us in gospel advance. With your help, we will continue GOing until He comes! I am pleased to present this report which provides a small glimpse of the enormous dividends your investment with us is achieving in reaching the world.

Index (CFI) was developed
by KPMG, LLC, and is used to measure the overall financial health of higher education institutions. An institution’s CFI score is calculated by looking at a school’s reserves, financial operating performance, return on assets, and its ability to cover debt. Anything above a CFI score of 3 is considered financially healthy. SEBTS’ CFI score for fiscal year 2019 was a 5.73 and our three-year average CFI score was 5.35. In addition, SEBTS has seen an increase in our CFI score for each of the past five years.

On October 31, 2018, Henry and Linda Hall entered President Danny Akin’s office to sign a document that not only represented a significant milestone for Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary but the legacy of a daughter the couple will never forget. That day, the Catherine Hall Memorial Student Aid Fund was established, a scholarship for students in honor of the Halls’ daughter, Cathy, who suffered from osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) until passing away in 2016.
In the same way that the Halls deeply loved and cared for their daughter, the scholarship represents the sacrificial love for which all believers are called to love others as Christ has loved through the gospel. Through their time as Southeastern Society members, the Halls desire to continue giving sacrificially so that more students can go and make disciples of all nations. “When you experience the sweet spirit of Southeastern up close and personal, it’s so much easier to say, ‘I’d really like to be a part of that,’” said Henry. For Henry and Linda, this scholarship highlights Cathy’s legacy and, most importantly, will be used to equip students at Southeastern to serve the Church and fulfill the Great Commission.

“Cathy was bright and had a sharp wit that endeared her to many and frustrated a few. She had a generous heart and would be greatly pleased to help someone respond to Jesus’ command to ‘go and make disciples.’ Cathy died in 2016 at the age of 51 and is now walking and running and dancing before the LORD.” FOR THE STUDENTS | STORY OF IMPACT

“They have a serving heart and even though they know so much, I feel like they’re still humble, and I love that about them.” After graduating in May 2020, Sam plans to go back to her home country to teach and serve the church. She will minister alongside her parents, who currently have a ministry that includes a church, school, orphanage and Bible college. Sam hopes to use the education she received at Southeastern to equip others like herself to fulfill the Great Commission in India.

Born in Tamil Nadu, India, Mary Sam saw the difference a theological education was making on her other four siblings who had been attending Southeastern. “I noticed that every time my siblings came back to India, they had a different passion for Christ and a desire to serve him, and I wanted that,” said Sam, who attended The College at Southeastern and continues to pursue her Master of Arts in Christian education. One of the most influential aspects of Sam’s education has been the depth of teaching and humility that her professors have exemplified.

We give because we seek to glorify God by being good stewards of what the Lord has entrusted to us. As stewards, we want to invest in Southeastern because it has an outstanding opportunity to impact countless lives around the world with the gospel. More specifically, we seek to support the equipping of students by funding a chair of Christian philosophy while also honoring Dr. Bruce Little for his lifetime of excellence in teaching the truth of Christ. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to equip students that can think critically, preach the gospel unashamedly and go faithfully.

The only hope the church has of
being re-created into Christ’s image is to hear His voice. The only hope we have to hear His voice is through His Word rightly understood. The only hope for it to be rightly understood is for it to be faithfully expounded. The only hope for it to be faithfully expounded is for us to train up a generation of expository preachers.

Binkley Chapel Renovation Binkley Chapel commands the center of
Southeastern’s campus. Its tall spire is visible for several miles along every approach to Wake Forest. The building is approximately 36,000 feet and consists of the chapel area and classrooms on the lower level, including two large lecture halls. Work was begun on the chapel in 1942 and by 1943 the roof was in place and the exterior was substantially completed, but World War II prevented the completion of the interior due to a scarcity of labor. When Wake Forest College completed their move to Winston-Salem in 1956, the work was resumed and completed in 1958. In 1959, a three-manual Reuter organ was given and installed as a memorial to Walter M. Williams of Burlington, NC. On February 13, 1969, the seminary’s Board of Trustees voted to name the chapel after Dr. Olin T. Binkley, the school’s second President. The ground floor of the chapel was redesigned in 1982 and furnished

as five classrooms and church music facilities, including organ and piano practice areas. This past year the chapel received needed repairs and updates. The gutters of the building were relined and areas of water damage were repaired. The main lighting was replaced; the bathroom fixtures were updated; and the walls received a fresh coat of paint- all of which have enhanced the aesthetics of the interior. Lastly, the sound booth was replaced which will improve our ability to host the thousands of people that come to campus for any number of events hosted in Binkley. Last year this building held 53 chapel services, 6 weddings, 3 commencement services, 3 conferences, 3 concerts, and 1 funeral. This historic building will certainly continue to serve as the center of worship on campus for years to come. For The Campus Total

Scott Bryant Southeastern Society Member, SEBTS Ground Crew Manager
For the past decade, Scott Bryant has been an integral part of the Southeastern family. Through managing the grounds crew in Southeastern’s Facilities office, he not only challenges his team to work with excellence, but he is instilling in them a culture of discipleship. “On the grounds crew, the guys will share stuff they’re struggling with, and so they can help each other. They create this relationship so that when they do leave here, they still have that person to go to.” Bryant believes that as his team is employed in the daily upkeep of campus, they are being developed theologically through their studies and work relationships. He believes as they provide services for Southeastern, the school is likewise giving back to them by equipping students to serve the Church and fulfill the Great Commission throughout the world.
“I really like the idea of working somewhere that is a Christian environment, but also equips students to carry the gospel out.” Bryant has also been a Southeastern Society member for the past nine years and is convinced that the mission of Southeastern is worth the investment. Southeastern has deeply influenced both him and those he leads through his work. It’s not surprising, then, to find Bryant often wearing Southeastern gear and proudly telling others about the school’s purpose and mission. From a logo on a shirt to a theological conversation with a crew member, Bryant continues to tell Southeastern’s story of how gospel transformation leads to gospel proclamation so that every nation can know Christ. Through giving, leading and serving, Bryant and others are able to GO. FOR THE CAMPUS | FEATURE

The Conley Family
Two Generations on Mission Derel and Beverly Conley’s involvement with Southeastern began in the fall of 2010 when their son Chris enrolled as a student. After serving in Wales as an intern missionary Chris went home believing God was calling him to seminary. He looked at other seminaries closer to home in central Texas but after visiting campus, he knew Southeastern was where he needed to be. Derel and Beverly quickly understood Chris’s decision after they helped him move to campus. The highlight of their visit was the tour of the missions building. Years before, God placed missions involvement on their hearts. When they walked through that building and saw all the places around the world that Southeastern graduates had FOR THE CAUSE | MISSION FEATURE
Left to Right: Rachel, Jonah, Evie, Chris, Beverly, Derel
gone on to serve the Kingdom, they knew this institution was truly having a Kingdom impact on the nations. Their son Chris, his wife Rachel, and their two children are now among those seeking to fulfill the Great Commission as they serve as missionaries in South Africa. The decision to support Southeastern came to them through God’s prompting as
they witnessed the impact it was making on the lives of its graduates and their witness to the lost around the world. It truly started with the young man God put in Chris’s life as his first roommate. He came from a family that had not been as financially blessed as they had been and because of this, they watched him struggle with balancing his studies and work schedule in order to keep on track to graduate and not be burdened with debt. He is now a missionary spreading the gospel among the Wolof people in Senegal. After searching for ways to share in Southeastern’s mission, they came across the Southeastern Fund, which helps to offset student tuition and support needed school operations.
Derel said, “It just seemed like the best
way to help. We believe now that we have been given the privilege of being a part of seeing God glorified around the world as the name of Jesus is being soundly preached here and abroad by Southeastern graduates.”
Thank You from all of us at Southeastern! From the Director of Financial & Alumni Development I often think about those who have generously given to ensure our students are able to get to their ministry assignments. I look forward to the day when we will see the impact of those who have given and those who are going. Thank you for your prayers and support,
