WATER
GET YOUR FEET WET WITH OUR WATER RECREATION
With four great rivers to explore and too many lakes to count, Southeast South Dakota has unforgettable ways for you to get on and in the water.
VARIETY OF WATERS
If the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Southeast South Dakota’s landscape is cornfields and pastures, you wouldn’t be wrong.
While our corner of the state is proud of its agricultural industry and rolling open spaces, we are also home to a lot of water!
With a variety of lakes and rivers to enjoy, there are really great ways to spend time in, on, and near water. When you’re making plans to visit, make sure to work in time to enjoy the beauty, serenity, and recreation of our waters!
RIVER PADDLING
Immerse yourself in the beauty of Southeast South Dakota by paddling. Pair your canoe or kayak outings with fishing, swimming, and camping. These adventures can be a couple of hours or an entire week. Make a plan, check regulations, and know safety tips for our area before you go.
BOATING
What’s better than having a boat? Having friends with boats! Most of our state parks offer lakes that are great for skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, you name it. If it’s sailing you’re into, you’ll want to venture south to Lewis & Clark
Lake, where the open water and wind speeds are ideal for sailing.
SWIMMING
Spending a summer day at the beach is how great memories are made. Pack a picnic, some sand toys, and a floatie. Head to Lewis & Clark Recreation Area to find numerous beaches to choose from. Lake Herman near Madison and Lake Vermillion near Canistota are also great options for swimming waters.
LAKES
The sky’s the limit when you head to the lake! Hang out on the beach and take in the sights
and sounds of the water. Go for a swim, practice your paddling skills, fish for that night’s dinner, or picnic with a view. Looking to sail? Head to Lewis & Clark Lake. Want numerous lakes in one local area? Madison is an excellent place for that! Whatever you decide to do, we recommend unplugging to take it all in.
FALLS PARK
Make a stop at Falls Park, Sioux Falls’ namesake. Sit back and relax as you watch the Big Sioux River cascade over the quartzite rock formations in stunning, powerful waterfalls. This destination is a great find all year long and is a holiday site to see during December!
RIVERS
SPLIT ROCK CREEK
Although officially named Split Rock CREEK, many consider it a river because of its beautiful vistas, history, and charm. This little creek winds through miles of farmland until it gets to Garretson. Here, an adorable dam creates a peaceful waterfall. From this point, you can paddle through the eery and ominous Devil’s Gulch to Palisades State Park. Along the way, enjoy exposed Sioux quartzite rock formations that create breathtaking creek walls, towering to 50 feet high in places. Paddle this route in spring when the waters are really flowing, and you might even get a whitewater ride! Just make sure to do your research and know your ability.
THE BIG SIOUX RIVER
Winding southward to Sioux Falls, it forms the boundary between South Dakota and Iowa until flowing into the Missouri River. With a total of 419 river miles, it’s a favorite paddling destination. Try the segment from Sioux Falls’ Lien Park to Newton Hills State Park in spring and summer. Watch for several low-head dams where watercraft must be portaged. Use the Jay Heath Canoe and Kayak Trail to locate dams, launch sites, and campgrounds.
VERMILLION RIVER
The Vermillion River is a scenic run from Centerville south to the Missouri River We recommend exploring this in the fall when the colors are especially showy.
JAMES RIVER
The James River is a curvy prairie stream that meanders through our countryside landscape. This slow-moving and shallow route is excellent for beginners.
MISSOURI RIVER
Exploring our section of the Missouri National Recreational River is like taking a step back in time. It’s wild and untamed, and it continues to flow as nature intended as it maintains the border between South Dakota and Nebraska. This mighty river is 20+ feet deep in some areas. There are no rapids, but high winds and underwater sandbars can make this journey a tough one. Paddlers should be experienced.
HISTORY
TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME WITH US AND RELIVE OUR
ROOTS
Our history is made up of conflict, hard work, and new beginnings. From native residents to homesteading pioneers, our backstory is one for the books.
PREHISTORIC TIMES
Explore Prehistoric Indian Village, a 1,000-year-old Indian village with a live archeological dig site. It is believed that there are 80 buried lodges on the site, and work continues today to unearth them.
TRIBAL NATIONS
Experience the rich heritage of nine Sioux tribes of South Dakota when you explore our historical sites, museums, and art galleries. Attend a pow-wow to experience the current-day celebration of tribal heritage. Visit the homelands of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and learn about their rich history and culture.
LEWIS & CLARK
Stand where Lewis and Clark stood at Spirit Mound Historic Prairie, just six miles north of Vermillion. This is one of the many spots in our region that the Corps of Discovery passed through in 1804. Visual displays about their journey can be found at the Lewis & Clark Visitor Center and the Mead Museum. Look for an exciting new addition to the Mead Museum’s Journeying Forward: Connecting Cultures exhibit in 2025 as they become the home of an original Jefferson Peace Medal, one that Lewis & Clark handed out themselves as they passed through the Dakota Territory.
PIONEER LIFE
Walk down a turn-of-the-century main street at Historic Prairie Village and explore the ins and outs of over 40 historic buildings. Ride one of the world’s last remaining steam-powered carousels that has been restored to its original condition and their steam-powered train around the entire campus. Experience more turn-of-the-century history at museums such as the Dakota Discovery Museum, The Center for Western Studies, Heritage Hall, Daneville Heritage Museum, W.H. Over Museum, and more!
LAURA INGALLS WILDER
Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books come alive when you explore De Smet and experience our pioneer heritage first-hand. Covered wagon rides, a one-room schoolhouse session, and handson homesteading activities will have you feeling like you’ve been transported back to 1880. Don’t worry; the plumbing has been updated for your comfort.
CELEBRATING CULTURES
Many of our communities have strong Scandinavian, Danish, Czech and Germans-fromRussia heritages, which we love to celebrate. Catch one of the
many annual small-town festivals where you can taste authentic dishes from home countries and join in on the unique festivities.
MUSIC FROM ALL AGES
Make a stop at the National Music Museum, a real treasure of our region. This world-renowned museum boasts an astonishing collection of 15,000+ instruments from around the globe. Exhibits of rare and historically significant pieces will leave you in awe.
NEW PURPOSE FOR HOSPITAL
The Dakota Hospital for the Insane was created in 1879 to address the need for mental health care in the Dakota Territory. The impressive historic building that housed the state hospital still stands today as the Mead Museum and welcomes you to take a step into the past with them. Take your photo on the beautifully restored marble staircase.
A PINK ROCK
Look around the region, and you’ll see a metamorphic rock that’s over 1.6 billion years old and almost as hard as a diamond. It can be found in buildings, landscaping, roads, and natural rock formations. The hues are primarily pink tones, giving it the nickname “rose stone” or “pink quartzite.”
HUNT & FISH
CAST AND BLAST IN SOUTHEAST SOUTH DAKOTA ALL YEAR
Our variety of landscapes and water make hunting & fishing here a dream. Experience the thrill of the hunt and pride of the catch all year long!
RECREATIONAL FISHING
Our region is small but mighty when it comes to giving fishermen choices and variety. With over 175 natural and manmade lakes, 3 major rivers, and numerous species to fish for, you’ll want to come back time and again to experience it all. Plus, our season is open all year long! You’ll find walleye, sauger, channel catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bullhead, bluegill, perch, and crappie. With nearly 98% of the state’s water being publicly accessible, you won’t have any trouble finding a great place to put a line in.
PADDLEFISHING
Head to the Missouri River near Yankton and Gavins Point Dam to find the primitive paddlefish species. These prehistoric fish can weigh more than 60 pounds and can survive for more than 50 years in the wild. They are known for their strength and fighting ability, making them a thrilling species to pursue. There are two seasons each year, including snagging in October and archery in June. You’ll need to apply for a tag to catch one of these unique fish. Visit www.gfp.sd.gov/ paddlefish to learn more.
ICE FISHING
Don’t let wintertime slow down your fishing hobbies. Many of our lakes are hot spots for ice fishing. Just stop by one of our great outfitters and get the right gear to keep you safe and warm!
FREE FISHING WEEKEND
Make plans to visit in May during our annual Open House and Free Fishing weekend. No license is required to fish and entrance fees to all South Dakota state parks and recreation areas are waived! Reach out to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks to learn more.
HUNTING
Some of our crowd-favorite species to hunt include pheasant, white-tailed deer, prairie turkey, and waterfowl. Get a complete list on the next page! It’s good to know that South Dakota land is approximately 80% privately owned. Therefore, most hunting across the state happens on private land. Road trips, bike rides, and downtown strolls are always better when there's gorgeous artwork to look at.
Downtown Sioux Falls has an impressive sculpture walk with over 80 pieces to enjoy. It changes every May so you can enjoy new work year after year. It is also home to many unique wall murals. We recommend wandering around downtown to see if you can find them all.
The Arc of Dreams is a signature sculpture for the Sioux Falls SculptureWalk and the city itself. It spans the Big Sioux River and is one you will definitely want to see. We recommend viewing it at night when it is lit up!
Amazing paintings and murals are also scattered throughout our region. You’ll find numerous works of art in downtown Vermillion, the “city of murals.” They make great selfie backdrops! Don’t forget to tag us when you post your photos! #SESouthDakota
Porter Sculpture Park is a fan-favorite roadside attraction just off of I-90 near Montrose. Here, you’ll find over 60 metal sculptures with accompanying poetry designed and created by sculptor Wayne Porter.
Head to Sioux City, where you’ll find a vibrant art scene, from alley murals to a public art center and everything in between. They have seven free museums of all sorts, including art museums. There’s so much to see, you should plan to make a weekend out of it!
LODGING
REST EASY AND SNOOZE IN STYLE WHEN YOU STAY WITH US
The variety of options in Southeast SD continues to grow. Wherever you decide to stay, you’re sure to be met with a warm midwest welcome.
HOTELS & MOTELS
A long day of adventure calls for a good night’s sleep. If luxury hotels are your vibe, we’ve got you. Hotel on Phillips is a beautiful historic boutique hotel where every room has a fun personality of its own. Canopy by Hilton Downtown Sioux Falls is a brand new, beautiful boutique hotel located in The Steel District. It neighbors Levitt at the Falls, Falls Park, and Downtown Sioux Falls. Some of our favorite spots, like Fensel’s Motel & Gift Shop, Cobblestone Inn, and Hometown Inn, are scattered across the region in small towns. These locally-owned motels have rural charm and some of the best people you’ll ever meet.
BED & BREAKFAST
If a classic B&B experience is what you’re looking for, the Steever House needs to be your next overnight destination. With unique decor and local breakfast cuisine, you’ll get a true South Dakota experience here.
RESORTS & RENTALS
If you’re looking for lodging with the amenities of home, we have some great options for you! Lewis & Clark Resort has styles for groups of any size, with beautiful lake views and beach access. Main Street Inn is a beautifully renovated historical home perfect for groups and hosting events. Head to the countryside where Dakota
Country Home offers an entire house to cozy up in and Blue Tin Ranch welcomes you to stay in their renovated chicken coop! Pfanny’s Farm is another peaceful countryside oasis where you can disconnect and relax in their garden cottage.
LODGES
At The Cogan House, you can rent just one room or the entire lodge. Either way, the views of the Missouri River and miles of the natural landscape are hard to top! Planning a reunion or wedding? Keep the beautiful Granite Springs Lodge in mind. Get up close and personal with nature when you stay at SD Outfitters Unlimited lodge.
STATE PARK LODGING
Want the adventure of camping AND the comfort of a hotel? Have both when you stay in one of the lodges found in many of our state parks. With bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens, they make staying in nature easy! We love the peaceful options in Newton Hills, Palisades, and Ponca State Parks
CASINO RESORTS
Play where you stay when you’re at Grand Falls Casino Resort, Royal River Casino, or Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Sioux City. Catch a concert, dinner, and a night of gaming without even having to leave the building.
