Winter
Fallanimals
While most people like to visit zoos in the summer, we recommend checking out the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History in the fall and winter. That’s because many of their main attractions are cold weather animals, like brown bears, amur tigers, snow leopards, and snow monkeys to name a few.
corn mazes
Have you ever walked through a maze of 6-foot corn stalks with just a flashlight and the moon to guide you? Heartland Country Corn Maze offers both day and night hours in the fall. At Mazing Acres Pumpkin Patch, there’s a huge variety of activities for kids of all ages. Sweaters, boots, and a PSL are highly recommended.
fall colors
Our region has some of the best fall colors! A great way to see them is to explore our nature areas like Prairie Arboretum and McCrory Gardens. Many of our museums and cultural destinations have outdoor exhibits that tell the stories of our rich history. Visit them in the fall and enjoy the crisp, fresh air!
snow fun
Hit the slopes at Great Bear Ski Valley for a full day of skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, and cross country skiiing. You can also take in the beauty of the season by hiking around Falls Park. Every winter this area turns into a frosty wonderland with whimsical icescapes and holiday lights.
learning
The Kirby Science Center at the Washington Pavilion makes learning just feel like playing. With 100+ interactive, hands-on exhibits, it’s a great way for kids to exercise their bodies and minds on cold (or any) days. Enjoy the on-site cafeteria, childern’s art studio, and cinedome while you’re there.
fun & games
Just because it gets dark at 5:00 pm during winter doesn’t mean the fun has to end early! Thunder Road offers a great lineup of indoor attractions for teens, from hyperbowling to a lazer maze and so much more. Throw axes at The Boat House and gamble the night away at one of our casinos.
on the
farm
Get up close and personal with our farms for a unique experience and a ton of fun! Kids of all ages will be so entertained that they won’t even know they’re learning something at the same time.
Agritourism offerings in our area make it easy to see (and taste) how food goes from the land to your plate. This, combined with genuine Midwestern hospitality, gives you some of the best agriculture experiences in the nation.
the animals
It’s true; we have a lot of cows here. Get to know where your dairy products come from and how they’re made when you visit Dimock Dairy Cheese Store, Farm Life Creamery, and Stensland Family Farms. Don’t leave without sampling cheese and ice cream since that’s the best part!
Good Earth Farm is where animal lovers need to be. Meet their hogs, chickens, ducks, miniature steer named T-Bone, and his best friend, the pony. Learn about the history of the farming and cattle industry with hands-on exhibits at the Stockyards Ag Experience Barn
the crops
Flower lovers need to visit Fleurish Flower Farm and Prairie Heirloom Farms. The fields of beauty go on for days! And the amazing aromas? That’s something you have to experience yourself. Pick your own flowers and take photos with some of the best backdrops around.

Relax in a corn bin gazebo when you stay at The Blue Tin Ranch! This location has some of the best star gazing opportunities around.
eat & drink
From mouthwatering steaks and award-winning pizza to cozy coffee shops and signature cocktails, our region has the dining and nightlife experiences you’ll keep coming back for. dining
Whether it’s dining amidst walls packed with South Dakota antiques, catching a game and a mouthwatering burger at a local sports bar, or dining in an igloo when it’s below freezing out, we have unforgettable experiences to go with your delicious food. If you’re near Falls Park, we recommend grabbing a bite at the Falls Overlook Cafe The historic building overlooking the falls is now home to a bright cafe with tasty food and yummy Stensland Family Farms ice cream.
nightlife
Rooftop bars, dance clubs, cigar bars, taprooms, and more can all be found close to each other in the Downtown Sioux Falls area. Sometimes, we prefer to hit the country bar scene instead. Head to any of our rural communities and ask where the best bar is. Get to know the friendly faces around you over a glass of red beer and maybe even a little karaoke.
birdwatching
Eastern South Dakota is a stopping place for millions of birds following the Central and Mississippi migratory flyways. The variety of habitats this area offers (woodlands, wetlands, rivers, and grasslands) is the perfect environment for over 300 species. We recommend starting with Union Grove State Park or Newton Hills State Park for some of the best birdwatching opportunities.
trails
Find yourself immersed in nature and all of the relaxing sights, smells, and sounds that come with it. Our region offers a wide variety of trails to fit your style.
scenery
If unique landscapes are at the top of your wish list when looking for a great trail, boy, do we have a couple you will want to see. Head to Gavins Point Nature Trail and Chalk Bluff Multi-use Trail at Lewis & Clark Recreation Area. These trails follow the chalkstone bluffs along the Missouri River and offer beautiful water views. Pro tip: explore these trails at sunset and experience the breathtaking golden glow of the chalkstone bluffs. Another hot spot for unique scenery is Palisades State Park
history
Spice up your hike with a bit of history when you visit Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve, Big Sioux Recreation Area, and Beaver Creek Nature Area. The historic buildings at these locations are a fun addition to a beautiful hike. Head to Spirit Mound to stand where Lewis and Clark stood 200 years ago.
Unique Treasure:
on the
water
boating
What’s better than having a boat? Having friends with boats! Most of our state parks offer lakes that are great for skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, you name it. If it’s sailing you’re into, you’ll want to venture south to Lewis & Clark Lake, where the open water and wind speeds are ideal for sailing.
swimming
biking
See more in less time on your bike! Explore the Sioux Falls Bike Trail as it wraps around the entire city. Hit the hilly dirt trails in Mitchell. Need a bike? Rent one from the City of Mitchell, ACE Bike and Fitness, or Hotel on Phillips
horseback
Bring your horses to Big Sioux Recreation Area and Clay County Park for a beautiful ride! Need to camp? Bring them to Lewis & Clark Recreation Area, Newton Hills State Park, or Union Grove State Park.
off-road vehicles
Sometimes it’s more fun to go fast. Talsma’s Trail Park, along the bluffs and ravines of the Missouri River, is THE place to kick up dust and mud with your ATV.
THRILL SEEKERS
Looking for an adventure to get your blood pumping? Paddle Split Rock Creek after spring and summer rains for a whitewater experience. The elevation drops 130 ft. in 8 miles along this route.
Spending a summer day at the beach is how great memories are made. Pack a picnic, some sand toys, and a floatie. Head to Lewis & Clark Recreation Area to find numerous beaches to choose from. Lake Herman near Madison and Lake Vermillion near Montrose are also great options for swimming waters.
river paddling
THE BIG SIOUX RIVER
The Big Sioux River is a favorite for paddling in spring or summer when water levels are high. Use the Jay Heath Canoe and Kayak Trail to know where launch sites and campgrounds are located along the river.
VERMILLION RIVER
The Vermillion River is a scenic run from Centerville south to the Missouri River. We recommend exploring this in the fall when the colors are especially showy.
JAMES RIVER
The James River is a curvy prairie stream that meanders through our countryside landscape. This slow-moving and shallow route is great for beginners.
MISSOURI RIVER
Exploring our section of the Missouri River is like taking a step back in time. It’s wild, untamed, and continues to flow as nature intended as it creates the border between South Dakota and Nebraska. This mighty river is 20+ feet deep in some areas. There are no rapids, but high winds and underwater sandbars can make this journey a tough one. We recommend only experienced paddlers venture this route.
new purpose for mental hospital
The Dakota Hospital for the Insane was created in 1879 to address the need for mental health care in the Dakota Territory. The impressive four story building that housed the hospital still stands today and is home to permanent and traveling exhibits that showcase the hospital’s and our area’s history. Visit the Mead Museum and make sure to take your photo on the beautifully restored marble staircase.
history
Southeast South Dakota’s backstory is one of conflict, hard work, and new beginnings. From native residents to homesteader farming, the story of our ancestors is one for the books.
laura ingalls wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books come alive when you explore DeSmet and experience our pioneer heritage firsthand. Covered wagon rides, a one-room schoolhouse session, and hands-on homesteading activities will have you feeling like you’ve been transported back to 1880. Don’t worry, the plumbing has been updated for your comfort.
Famous Characters
Or should we say “infamous” characters? See the ravine that Jesse James (supposedly) jumped via horseback. Visit the place where Jack McCall was tried and hung for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok. Explore the homestead of the beloved Ingalls family, and more!
Stand where Lewis and Clark stood at Spirit Mound Historic . This is one of the many spots in our region that the Corps of Discovery passed through in 1804. Visual displays about their journey can be and the Mead
Laura Ingalls Wilder Homesteadrose stone
Look around the region and you'll think you're wearing rose-colored glasses. A metamorphic rock over 1.6 billion years old and almost as hard as a diamond can be found in buildings, landscaping, and roads (and the Old Courthouse Museum in Downtown Sioux Falls, shown here.)
The hues of this rock are primarily variations of pink tones, giving it the nickname "rose stone" or "pink quartzite." The stone is exposed in some areas, like Garretson's Split Rock Park. In other places, it rests several hundred feet below the soil’s surface.
pioneer life
At Prairie Village, you can walk down a turn-of-the-century main street and explore the ins and outs of over 40 historic buildings. Ride one of the world’s last remaining steam-powered carousels that has been restored to its original condition and their steampowered train around the entire campus.

native roots
Before there were one-room schoolhouses and dusty saloons, there was the Sioux Nation. As of 2022, Native Americans make up more than 15% of South Dakota’s population. Experience the rich heritage of nine Sioux tribes when you explore our historical sites, museums and art galleries.
Pro Tip:
Mark your calendars for Free Fishing Weekend on May 19-21, 2023! No license is required to fish and entrance fees for all SD state parks and recreation areas is waived!
hunt & fish
fishing
Our region is small but mighty when it comes to giving fishermen choices and variety. With over 175 natural and man-made lakes, 3 major rivers, and numerous species to fish for, you’ll want to come back time and again to experience it all.
In our waters, you’ll find walleye, sauger, channel catfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bullhead, bluegill, perch, and crappie. You’ll also find paddlefish, shown above, a primitive species native to the Missouri River. These prehistoric fish can weigh more than 60 pounds and can survive for more than 50 years in the wild. You’ll have to apply for a tag to catch one of these unique fish. Visit www.gfp.sd.gov/paddlefish to learn more.
ice fishing
Keep wintertime from slowing your fishing hobbies. Many of our lakes are hot spots for ice fishing. Just stop by one of our great outfitters and get the right gear to keep you safe and warm!
LICENSES
Fishing and hunting licenses are easy to get for South Dakota residents and non-residents alike. Buy them overthe-counter at many retail locations or online at gfp.sd.gov.

Gavins Point Damhunting
“The moment.” You know, that space in time when you see that flamboyant tom or majestic buck in the distance, and you lock in on them, waiting for JUST the right moment to take your shot. Your heart is racing, and the world around you is still. Your every bit of concentration is on that scope. And then you take a slow
It’s a one-of-kind rush you need to experience for yourself, and we have just the playing field to do it. Our landscape is great for hunting pheasant, whitetail deer, turkey, goose, and duck. Hunters can also find partridge, quail, dove, coyote, and fox.
The memories made with family and friends when you hunt together are just as special as the prize. And filling your freezer with meat you caught yourself will leave you feeling good whenever you “pull something out for dinner.”
Southeast South Dakota offers access to 4.5 million acres of public land. Many private landowners will allow you to hunt on their property if you ask permission first. We also have private reserves offering guided hunts, lodging and meals. Whatever you decide to do, take a photo of your accomplishment and tag #SESouthDakota.
camp
That first cup of morning coffee as you look out at nature. The smell of the campfire as it crackles and pops. We have the perfect spot for your next relaxing getaway.
waterfront views
Camping is great. But camping by water is even better! Over 80% of our campgrounds have access to water, whether it’s a place to fish, swim, or put your boat in. If having that waterfront view is vital to you, look for campgrounds with that option.
roughing it
Some people just don’t want neighbors when they’re camping, and we understand that. If your picture of the perfect camping trip includes getting there by kayak with the river being the only running water, make plans to visit Green Island and Goat Island Recreation Areas. These primitive campsites will be a true adventure!
camper trailers
If ‘home’ is where you park it, we have options for you. Those who camp with the amenities of an RV are welcome at all of our campgrounds accessible by land. Most of our campgrounds offer numerous electric sites to keep the lights on and the refrigerator cold!
cabins
BOOKING
Campsite reservations at South Dakota State Parks open 90 days before your camping date. They go quickly, so be sure to set a reminder to book them!
It’s a lot of work to get ready for a camping weekend! Minimize some of your preparation time by booking a camping cabin, available in many of our state parks and private campgrounds. These cabins will get you out of the elements when you need to be without hauling an RV or pitching a tent. Sounds like a win to us!

Road trips, bike rides, and downtown strolls are always better when there's gorgeous artwork to look at.
Downtown Sioux Falls has an impressive sculpture walk with over 69 pieces to enjoy. It changes every May so you can enjoy new work year after year.
Amazing paintings and murals are scattered throughout our region, like this one in Vermillion. They make great selfie backdrops!

hotels & motels
A long day of adventure calls for a good night’s sleep. If luxury hotels are your vibe, we’ve got you. The Hotel on Phillips is a beautiful historic boutique hotel that even rents out bicycles to explore Sioux Falls on wheels. (Jump on the Falls Park & Big Sioux River Recreational Trails!) Many others have bars and restaurants right on site. Did someone say room service?
Some of our favorite spots like Fensel’s Motel & Gift Shop, MidWest LivINN, and Hometown Inn, are scattered across the region in small towns. These locally-owned motels have rural charm and some of the best people you’ll ever meet.
bed & breakfasts
If a classic B&B experience is what you’re looking for, the Steever House needs to be your next overnight destination. With unique decor and local breakfast cuisine, you’ll get a true South Dakota experience here. At The Cogan House, you can rent just one room or the entire lodge. Either way, the views of the Missouri River and miles of the natural landscape are hard to top!
stay
The variety of lodging options in Southeast SD continues to grow as new hotels arise and unique vacation rentals are created. Wherever you decide to stay, you will be met with a midwest welcome.

We especially love the peaceful options in Newton Hills and Palisades State Parks and the close access to outdoor recreation they offer.
