What is a Hurricane?

You might have heard people talking about hurricanes lately. That's because Fall is the time for hurricane season.

But what is a hurricane? Are they dangerous?

Hurricanes are giant storms of swirling wind and rain that form over oceans.

Hurricanes can be very dangerous. The heavy rains can cause flooding, and the strong winds can damage buildings and knock down trees. If you live near the ocean, listen to your weather station on TV or on the radio for information about what to do.

People who live close to where a hurricane is coming often "evacuate" or leave their homes until the storm has passed.
