New & Noteworthy INTERBIKE CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY

UPDATE: TEAM CARTER

EVERY FALL the largest bicycle show in North America rolls into Las Vegas to serve the industry of bicycle shops and product manufacters. Thankfully for us, the directors of Interbike have recognized the importance of including bicyclists in this show and will be holding a customer appreciation day on September 18 at the Mandalay Bay casino. See our preview on page 14.

INSPIRED BY his five year old Grandson Carter who suffers with Juvenile Arthritis on a daily basis, Jerry Davis organized Team Carter in 2014 when he participated in the 8-day California Coast Classic (the CCC benefits the Arthritis Foundation by raising vital funds needed to find a cure for arthritis).

September 18, 2015 - Las Vegas, Nevada

Team has raised over $100k for CCC

Since we brought you the story of Jerry Davis and Team Carter in our Early Spring issue, the team has grown to 300 riders and raised $100,105 towards their goal of $125,000. With the help of contributions from Team Carter and others, The Arthritis Foundation has found Carter a more effective daily treatment to manage his juvenile arthritis. As Team Carter preps for the 525 miles in September, Jerry is continually impressed by his team mates, saying “Our team has several riders that have been diagnosed with (and fight on a daily basis) arthritis. I’m amazed by all of their strength and determination to do this 525 mile ride.” We wish them the best on their ride this September.   Find out more and read the original story at scbicyclist.com/carter

BEACH BABE BICYCLING CLASSIC June 14, 2015

THE SUN SHONE BRIGHTLY on the participants of the Beach Babe Bicycling Classic as they soared to the oceanfront finish-line on May 17th, 2015 in Long Beach. The California Girl Series annual event is a casual women’s ride that celebrates the bicycling community and the beauty of the Southern California beaches. The ride started and finished at Pierpoint Landing along Aquarium way, nestled between lighthouses and sandy shores. The riders on the route cut through Seal Beach, looped around Huntington Beach, and then headed back down PCH towards the sounds of tropical surf music coming from the Beach Babe Classic. There was catered food at the finish line along with vendors booths under the palm trees. A standout from other recreation events were the great costumes. There were bunny ears, tutus, capes, leis, wings, and some Minions from Despicable Me even made an appearance. It was all laughter and smiles at this relaxed event and a celebration of all the best parts of bicycling. See the full photo gallery at scbicyclist.com/bbbc  

MANHATTAN BEACH GRAND PRIX

Mens 55+ Cat 1-3 set the bar high for the rest of the day with a roar that woke up the sleepy Sunday morning.

PRO-AM ROAD RACING June 7, 2015

FOR OVER 38 YEARS, the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix has served California’s bicycling community by continuing to hold the renowned criterion that winds its way through the streets of the Los Angeles county beach town. With the largest cash purse of any similar event, the competition was fierce. Participants in the Mens 55+ category 1-3 (above) set the tone on the early Sunday morning with a mix of sounds somewhere between highschool wrestling match and indsutrial machine shop, drawing in customers from the surrounding coffee shops to watch the bicyclists whip through the course set around Live Oak Park in the city center. The significance and reputation of the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix becomes quite clear with competitors from all across the United States and overseas, descending on the 3 mile course one Sunday every year in June for this professional/ amateur competition. No Purpose Necessary TOUR DE FAT

September 25, 2015 SPONSORED BY NEW BELGIUM Brewing Company, Tour de Fat celebrates all things bicycle and promotes bicycling as a sustainable form of transportation. On September 26, the event opens with a costumed bike parade through Golden Hill Park in San Diego. You will be accompanied by hundreds of bicyclists dressed in their most celebratory gear. After this lively and entertaining parade, make your way to the center of the park where you’ll find cold New Belgium beers, lots of music and entertainment, and plenty of friendly people and fun costumes. The festival also features the Car-For-Bike program, in which one brave role model will trade in their car keys and pledge to live car-free for one year.  The swapper will receive $2250 from New Belgium Brewing Co. to spend on a bike and accessories. Visit scbicyclist.com/tourdefat for more info.

OC GRAN FONDO

October 10, 2015 HERE FOR 2015! The OC Gran Fondo returns for another roll through the roads, creeks and trails of Orange County. There are plenty of routes to choose ranging from the full monty 100-miles, down to a 1-mile ride for the littlest bicyclists in your life. The 100-mile route takes riders through the Santa Ana Mountains with a descent down Black Star Canyon, an overall ascent of 5528 feet, and sections of dirt that add an element of challenge to the event. The race organizers have dubbed this route the Dirty 100, and we understand why. As an extra incentive, the OCGF will have a Strava Competition for the Medio Fondo and the Gran Fondo riders (details TBA). The first ride leaves at 7:30 am from the Irvine Civic Center on Saturday October 10th and the Strava Competition Awards Ceremony starts at 5:00 pm. See you all there! CF CYCLE FOR LIFE October 11, 2015

BICYCLISTS FROM ALL over the nation have come together to ride and raise awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Cycle for Life. This October, residents of Southern California will also be able to participate in this epic event. The ride will start at Lakeview Park adjacent to Irvine Lake and pass through picturesque terrain beginning with the hills of Santiago Canyon, through the cities of Tustin, Irvine, Mission Viejo, and then down to the ocean in Dana Point. The proceeds for this event will support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (@CF_Foundation). In 2014, CF Cycle for Life raised nearly $4 million for those affected by CF. Let’s beat last year’s record and ride for this important cause - and all the while enjoying our beautiful California sunshine by bicycle. Visit scbicyclist.com/cff for more info.

GIRO COSTA CENTRALE November 15, 2015

THE 2ND ANNUAL Giro Della Costa Centrale combines the love of bikes with Italian culture, set against the backdrop of scenic San Luis Obsipo. You will have four rides to choose from—the Piccolo Fondo being the shortest with 25 miles and the classic 100-miles on the SLO GranFondo route. If the bold task of taking on 100 miles isn’t exciting enough, they’ve also included sections from the Amgen Tour of California to the Gran Fondo, so you can ride like the professionals. After the race, participants will be treated to a gourmet Italian dinner in conjunction with the Festivale Italiano - SLO’s version of the post-race celebrations in Italy. It’s “Everything Italian” at the Festivale Italiano, which means great wine, food, music, and conversation. Additionally, the first place man and woman for each Giro Della Costa Centrale ride will receive the Giro Pink Stage Winners’ jersey. This event is the perfect reason for a bicyclist’s weekend getaway. Visit scbicyclist.com/gcc for more info.

“The poetry of the earth is never dead.” - John Keats

Brainchild of Aylee Rhodes and Kriegh Hampel, Steelhead Stella is a brilliant display of advocacy through art.

ADVOCACY THROUGH ART Photos by Samuel Parks

STEELHEAD STELLA is an artful and poignant reminder of man’s profound effect on the Los Angeles River ecosystem. The bicycle-powered mobile art installation is the brainchild of Aylee Rhodes and Kriegh Hampel, two friends who were inspired by their experience at the 2014 Los Angeles River Clean Up. Soon after the event, they learned about the sea-life that flourished in the LA basin less then 100 years ago - a native population

of southern steelhead salmon. With that knowledge as inspiration, they spent the next 14 months with friends and bicyclists alike to build the 35-foot long sculpture, using little money, but long volunteer hours. Nearly all the material used to build the steelhead was from waste collected from the river. The sculpture made an appearance during the Los Angeles River Ride on June 28, 2015. It caught the attention of all the attendants who surrounded the piece, studying the trail of trash that man has left behind.   Visit scbicyclist.com/stella for more photos.

The result of a public unconcerned with the ecological impact of their actions.
