A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER facilitated our Women in Business Day at the Capitol of Georgia, hosted multiple networking and training opportunities, facilitated our 2nd Female Entrepreneurship CoHort, cohosted multiple ribbon cuttings for our women business owners, hosted and facilitated our Inaugural All Girls STEM & Entrepreneurship Camp for our Youth, Cohosted GA STEM Day Event with local district and partners, closed the deal to ensure our magazines are sold off the local Barnes & Noble store racks, and more!

Wow! We're halfway through 2022 already! This has been a hard, yet impactful year so far. Women in the State of Georgia account for 8th in nation for most female owned business in the entire United States of America. We are truly changing the game and the face of entrepreneurship for our generation and those generations to come. We continue to look for ways to elevate and expand our platform for women in business. This has been possible with much strategy, vision and support from individuals like our 2022 Media Sponsors, which include Sylvia Wray of the Alzheimer’s Services Center, Tyronica Carter of Radiant Styles, Sharon Ponder of Xtreme Fun on Wheels, Sherry DeVouseDennard of State Farm, Kiya Page of Page Test Solutions and Kim Mays of State Farm. While these ladies are ensuring that they are intentional in promoting and marketing their brand, their commitment allows for us to include other female entrepreneurs. So far in 2022....We have successfully released our Season 2 of Women Live!TV, Season 3 of Women, Wealth and Entrepreneurship Podcast, our 3rd Edition of Southern Crescent Women in Business Magazine, honored women entrepreneurs at our 2nd Annual Women in Business Awards,

Access to capital for female entrepreneurs is still an area that we want to increase. However, we have officially launched our Women Owned Funding Directory available on our website at www.scwibga.org. We are in talks with possible partners to expand access to lending opportunities and access to capital. Stay tuned for more in this area. In addition, we are looking to solidify our support of women in business running for political office. Please take the time to read the contribution pieces submitted by our elected women in office. Advocacy, Education, Funding, Support, and Empowering women in business across the Southern Crescent is what Southern Crescent Women In Business has done and will continue to do. Taking this across state lines in a meaningful way is where we are heading. Remember that it takes all of this to move this mission forward, your sister is not your competition- who you were on yesterday is your only competition. Lets support those who continue to support you. Be sure to stay with us on this journey.

Po...it's TIME

By State Representative Sandra G. Scott Georgia State House of Representatives Our lives depend on what we do today, so Women lets come together and change the world by doing what is right and just for all people. Women in Politics understand what the world needs, so let’s do it!

"Therefore, we must stay ready, so we don’t have to get ready"

I

f we only knew the Power we have as Women in Politics we can control the world. It is our time! It is our time to come together and stand up for what is right. When Women in Politics speak and speak with “Authority” the world listens. We are the backbone of the world, and we need for women all around the world to support Women in Politics. If we want to see a change in this world, we must come together and support women in politics that have good morals, values, and love making a difference in the lives of their community. Women who can look beyond the color on one’s skin and their socio-economic status. Women who are willing to fight for the change we seek in this world. Therefore, we must stay ready, so we don’t have to get ready. We need more Women in Politics because we are the future, and it will be women in politics that revitalize and rebuild this world

As we navigate Women in Politics, we have two types: Showhorse &Workhorse. Showhorse Woman in Politics is one that comes into politics with a personal agenda that includes “self”. They are unteachable and not a team player. While everyone wants to please their constituents, they want to please their self. They have no allegiance to their constituents, caucus, or party. They show up to community events for photo opportunities. You try to email or call them, and they do not respond. When it is time for re-election, you will see them in your churches, get plenty of text messages, emails, and robocalls, and once election is over the cycle will repeat itself. Workhorse Woman in Politics is one that comes into politics to actually help the people. They are committed to the end. They align with others for the good of all. They are about work and service for the people. They are committed to making things better for the people. They eat and sleep thinking of what they can do what resources and opportunities they can bring to their communities to make a difference.

They are constantly, working on legislation that will make a difference for the people. They attend classes to get a clear understanding on how they can help people to be better than they were the day before. They are all about the people. They understand that as Women In Politics, they must advocate, agitate, and stand up for what is right. How would you identify your legislator? A Showhorse or A Workhorse I identify as a Workhorse in Politics because it is never about me; it’s about what I can do to help my people. I represent District 76 serving Clayton County as well as every resident in the State of Georgia that needs my assistance. I serve all people…..

By Carlotta Harrell Chair, Henry County Board of Commissioners The same can be said across appointed boards. The impact of too few women in board and elected positions across the metro area can be seen in every aspect of life, especially in the lack of collaboration across jurisdictions and in the spike of intra-regional competition for the same jobs and opportunities. Rather than regional packages, cities bid against counties and counties bid against other cities. Women can change that.

"Names like Hillary, Stacey, Kamala, and Shirley show us what is possible when women dare to serve ." “Many of our troubles in the world today arise from an over-emphasis of the masculine, and a neglect of the feminine. This modern world is an aggressive, hyperactive, competitive, masculine world, and it needs the woman's touch as never before.” - Eva Burrows I am privileged to lead the Henry County Board of Commissioners. I was elected in November 2020 to replace a woman. It is rare for women to hold an executive position in government in the South and even rarer for a woman to follow another woman in that type of position. The three most populous counties to the north of us-Cobb and Fulton-have only elected one woman each to lead their county. Gwinnett and Henry are the only two major counties to elect women in consecutive elections. Not even the city of Atlanta has achieved this, mostly because women do not run.

SOUTHERN CRESCENT WOMEN IN BUSINESS MAGAZINE

Women make up the majority of voters in Georgia, Henry County and in this publication’s readership. In fact, using the Georgia Secretary of State’s data as of December 2021, women constituted 53% of all registered voters in Georgia, 54% of registered voters among this readership and approximately 55% of all registered voters in Henry County. Yet, women are less than half of all the elected executive officials and board leaders in the region. Imagine if 55% of all mayors were women, or commission chairs, or board chairs. It can happen if more women run for office and submit for boards.

Names like Hillary, Stacey, Kamala, and Shirley show us what is possible when women dare to serve. I lost my first run for Chair by only a few votes. Rather than retreating, I prepared, worked, and ran again. Hillary lost twice but paved the way for women leaders at all levels. Leaders like Teresa MacCartney recently served as the Acting Chancellor for the University System of Georgia, navigating one of the largest higher education systems in the country through a global pandemic and showing that women can lead large organizations without cracking under pressure. When we run, we can win. When we put our name in the hat to serve, we get appointed. When we are in positions to have influence, we make the world a better place. We are the only thing stopping us.

I encourage every woman with a desire to serve to do so at the next opportunity. Time is going to pass by. The question is will you lead the next major initiative, or will you let someone take your place? It is time for more women to step up and step into the fight. As Eva Burrows said, the world needs a woman’s touch right now

By Sylvia Wray Executive Director, Alzheimer's Services Center Dementia is the broad term used to describe several different conditions affecting the brain that causes the loss of cognitive functioning (the ability to think, remember, or reason) that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. These functions include memory, language skills, problemsolving, self-management, and the ability to focus and pay attention. Dementia ranges in severity from mild to severe. Mild stage is just beginning to affect a person’s functioning. The most severe stage is when the person must depend completely on others for basic activities of daily living. Dementia affects three areas of the brain: language, memory, and decision-making. There are 7 Types of Dementia: Alzheimer’s, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, Parkinson’s, Frontotemporal, Huntington’s Disease, and other causes. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common type of Dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 60 to 80 percent of the cases of Dementia is caused by this disease. The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease are generally mild to start with, but as more brain cells are damaged over time the symptoms get worse and start to interfere with a person’s day-to-day life. Some warning signs of Alzheimer’s Disease are memory loss that disrupts daily life, challenges in planning or solving problems, difficulty completing familiar tasks, confusion with time or place, new problems with words in speaking or writing, misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps, poor judgement, withdrawal from social activities, and changes in mood and personality. The second most common type of dementia is Vascular Dementia. It’s caused by the lack of blood flow to the brain.

In Vascular Dementia, there are changes in thinking skills that sometimes occur suddenly after a stroke. This blocks major blood vessels in the brain. Symptoms of Vascular Dementia can appear slowly or suddenly, depending on what’s causing it. Early signs are confusion and disorientation. Later signs are having trouble completing tasks or concentrating for long periods of time. Lewy body dementia is caused by protein deposits in nerve cells. These interrupts chemical messages in the brain and causes memory loss and disorientation. Lewy body dementia is a type of progressive dementia that leads to a decline in thinking, reasoning, and independent function. Some symptoms of Lewy body dementia include confusion and alertness, well-formed visual hallucinations, delusions, and sleep disturbances. Parkinson’s Disease dementia usually develops in some people living with Parkinson’s at least a year after their diagnosis. Early signs of this type of dementia are problems with reasoning and judgement. Some commonly reported symptoms include changes in memory, concentration and judgement, muffled speech, visual hallucinations and delusions, especially paranoid ideas. Frontotemporal dementia are forms of dementia caused by a family of neurodegenerative brain diseases collectively, all with one thing in common: They affect the front and side parts of the brain, which are areas that control language and behavior.

The two most prominent diseases that cause frontotemporal degenerations are a group of brain disorders involving the protein tau and a group of brain disorders involving the protein called TDP43. Huntington’s disease is a genetic condition that causes dementia. It is a progressive brain disorder caused by a defective gene. There are two types that exist: juvenile onset (which is rare) and adult onset (which occur in a person when they’re in their 30s or 40s. Some symptoms include difficulty focusing on tasks, impulse control problems, trouble speaking clearly and difficult learning new things. There are some other causes of dementia which includes Creutzfeldt-Jackob, Wernicke-Korsakoff, Normal pressure hydrocephalus and Mixed dementia. Many other diseases can also cause dementia in the later stages. For example, people with multiple sclerosis can develop dementia. While June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month, we want to highlight it all year. Let’s go purple to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more that 55 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Join me in going purple and raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and other related dementias and the Alzheimer’s Services Center, Adult Day Services located at 7251 Mount Zion Circle, Morrow, GA 30260. www.ascga.org

By Kesha Kennedy Realtor/Broker

High interest rates and low inventory have been a hot topic in the real estate world. The continuous rising of mortgage interest rates has a strong impact in the views of the housing market participants, particularly buyers and sellers of properties. According to cnbc.com, “the country has increased its interest rates by 0.75 percentage points, from 0.75% to an annual rate of 1.5%.” It may cause anxiety to some, but guess what, it is correcting the market as well.

Here are some of the key points you need to understand about the correlation between interest rates and real estate: · Higher interest rates mean higher mortgage loan costs. · Higher rates will push sellers to increase prices making it more expensive to buyers, thus, reducing the demand for buying homes. But this also means, buyers can put in offers without so much competition. · When the demand for buying properties gets low, sellers will need to lower their prices to attract buyers. What you need to do when dealing with the current market: BUYERS: If you are already pre-approved but not under contract, speak with your lender to see if you still qualify for the same amount. This will help you lessen time and effort in properties you don’t know you can’t afford anymore.

SELLERS: If you are on the fence to sell, get off now. Our multiple offers and bidding up is slowly coming to an end. The current refinance mortgage rate when fixed to 30 years, which is 6.00% to date, is still cheaper when compared to rates in history according to the data provided by mortgage lender Freddie Mac. Interest rates have been so much higher than this before, most of us just haven't seen these rates. High interest rates won’t immobilize the housing market as long as the economy is keeping up with it. With job growth that comes with a higher wage, home buyers can still afford properties, and sellers will continue with their usual selling. However, it is still important to work with experts to be more informed and secured with all your financial decisions. The goal of higher rates is to slow the inflation and economic activity without causing a recession. While we can never predict in which direction the market will turn, we do know that we are not in a crisis, but more so a shifting and market correction. This too shall pass.

By Demetria Winters Mental health has been a priority for ages in the sense that we worry, argue and cry about it. However, there is also denial while we try to hide the evidence from the rest of the world about ourselves or our loved ones. Ideas are debated, committees are formed and plans for change are made. What should life look like, when someone you care about is diagnosed with a mental illness? Helping them recover from an acute crisis is just the first step, but of course it cannot stop there. Where is the follow-up and who should be involved? Persons with chronic illness such as high blood pressure or diabetes after diagnosis, have regular appointments to track progress and make adjustments based on findings so the doctor and patient can agree on a modified plan of action. One could argue that the same should be done for patients with mental health diagnoses. Furthermore, current events have been contributing to a rise in depression, anxiety, substance abuse and suicides and have created even more questions about the state of mind of everyone. Typical stressors notwithstanding, you then have the pandemic, monkey pox, war, natural disasters….the list goes on. In addition to the pandemic and fight for reproductive rights, recent mass shootings, which have brought more turmoil and uncertainty across the country, is yet another trial that makes you wonder about people’s mental health. Although, not all violence can be explained away by mental illness, in some cases there is a significant connection. In cases where it is, knowing the history and care (or lack thereof) of the perpetrator could possibly help us decrease these types of tragedies. Although people across many demographics are affected, there has still been a lack of a cohesive plan that includes follow-up guidance and care. From my experience professionally and personally, helping someone in crisis for the moment is not the only important road to take. Patients after recovery are not just for numbers and
