Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival 28 February – 8 March 2020

Stanthorpe’s Apple and Grape Harvest Festival is one of Queensland’s longest running festivals and a must do on the state’s event calendar. The biennial festival is a celebration of the Granite Belt’s produce and booming wine industry. With 10 days of festivities, culminating in an unforgettable weekend of colourful street carnivals, a food and wine fiesta and the messy fun of the grape crushing championships! 10 days of festival fun including grape crushing and apple peeling competitions. Jumpers and Jazz in July 16–26 July 2020 Warwick’s Jumpers and Jazz in July is Queensland’s quirkiest yarnbombing and jazz winter festival! The locals yarnbomb Warwick’s deciduous trees, turning our streets into a remarkable exhibition. With live jazz, tastes of country cuisine and a huge program of events spanning 10 days, the festival is bookended by two big weekends of celebrations providing plenty of opportunity to make a weekend of it. The 25th Historic Leyburn Sprints returns to the streets of Leyburn, with over 200 cars racing around the idyllic country town, vying for trophies in over 20 classes, as well as outright and historic placings. Get amongst the drivers and their cars, ranging from the 1920s through to modern classics. The Historic Leyburn Sprints is commemorating the 71st anniversary of the running of the Australian Grand Prix, held at Leyburn on a disused wartime airstrip in 1949. Celebrity drivers at the 2019 event included Colin Bond, Fred Gibson, Dick Johnson and Kevin Bartlett – who knows who you’ll spot at this event! Come along for the country markets, live music, Shannons show ‘n’ shine and the Vintage Caravan comp – all adding to the entertainment provided by this unique event in a fantastic country setting!

Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft 19–25 October 2020 Every year for the last full week in October the nation’s top rodeo riders and the best broncs and bucking bulls gather for the Warwick Rodeo — known far and wide as ‘Australia’s Most Famous’. Known by many as the ‘Melbourne Cup’ of campdrafting, the Warwick Gold Cup attracts more riders and offers more prize money than any other campdraft in Australia. Worth over $55,000 plus a gold cup and a trophy saddle, it is, and has been for many years, regarded as the Australian Championship Campdraft. Each has its own story, and restored buildings, churches, museums and attractions reveal a rich history. You’ll discover local art galleries, antique shops, farmers’ markets, roadside stalls, cosy cafés and the local pub, where you’re sure to find a local keen for a chat.

The Granite Belt Stanthorpe At the heart of the Granite Belt, Stanthorpe gives easy access to big sky panoramas, spectacular countryside dotted with precariously balancing prehistoric granite boulders, boutique wineries and a generally cooler, temperate climate (and even the occasional winter snowfall). Previously known as Quart Pot Creek, a mining rush in 1872 gave Stanthorpe its name: Stannum is Latin for tin and thorp is English for village. The town of Stanthorpe is now the beating heart of the Granite Belt, with a rich multicultural and agricultural heritage, and a cosmopolitan mix of locals, backpackers and travellers. Beautiful Quart Pot Creek flows through town and offers more than 5km of walking and cycling tracks, picnic tables and barbecue areas. In the centre of town there’s a good mix of cafés, shops, gift stores and art galleries. Enjoy our European traditions; sit in the Stanthorpe Piazza, with coffee in hand, under the famous Roll Up Tree public art piece and watch the world go by.

Things to do • Attend the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival, held every second year in March (28 February – 8 March 2020). • Join our magical three-day winter-themed celebration, Snowflakes in Stanthorpe, held every second year in winter, with snowfields, ice-skating and more to enjoy (2–4 July 2021). • Visit the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery to see works from prominent local and Australian artists and even a precious Picasso lithograph.

• Tour the winery at Queensland College of Wine Tourism and sit down to lunch featuring local produce paired with their wines. • Browse the stalls at Market in the Mountains or the Showgrounds Markets, both held monthly. • Snap a pic with the Big Thermometer, just near the Visitor Information Centre. It's a must do in winter to prove just how freezing it really is!

Granite Belt Villages A string of Granite Belt villages nestle along the New England Highway either side of Stanthorpe – from Dalveen, Thulimbah and The Summit in the north, through to Severnlea and Glen Aplin, and further south to Eukey and Ballandean and the border town of Wallangarra on the edge of Girraween National Park. Ballandean Things to do • Taste wines with the winemakers at the many award-winning cellar doors in the area. • Climb the famous Pyramid rock formation in Girraween National Park. • Don’t miss a little bit of Egypt — take a selfie with our quirky handmade pyramid. • Fish in the Severn River or tackle Sundown National Park’s rugged four-wheel-drive tracks. • Learn how to make exquisite natural soap at Washpool Skin Wellness and Soaperie – a treat for the senses. • Indulge in hand-made artisan chocolates at Heavenly Chocolates at Wyberba. • Many of the wineries host annual events each year. Wallangarra Things to do • Visit Wallangarra Museum and Café at the historic Wallangarra Railway Station and learn about its illustrious past. Don’t miss the Wallangarra Border Markets held there on the first Sunday of the month. • Find famous Australian bushranger Thunderbolt’s hideout. The path to the hideout is signed, and parking is available. Nearby are remnants of the WWII Brisbane Line tank traps – 10,000 troops were stationed in the area in wartime. • Step back in time with a trip on the Southern Downs Steam Railway. • Tackle Girraween’s challenging Mt Norman Track, accessed from Wallangarra. • Stop at the Queenslander sign and take a selfie!

John Simpson’s Horsepower legacy pays homage to the rich and varied facets of the region's equestrian history and was more than ten years in the making. The 15 metre high sculpture sits at the southern end of Queens Park, on Alice St, where you can enjoy a casual stroll along the Condamine River.

Leyburn Perched serenely on the banks of Canal Creek, the little village of Leyburn is the perfect country drive. It will charm you with its old-time feel. There’s a strong sense of history with many of the town’s buildings dating back to the mid to late 1800s. Of note is the heritage-listed St Augustine’s Anglican Church, designed by one of Queensland's most notable architects, Richard George Suter and built in 1871; it is a rare example of a timber gothic-style church.

Things to do • Don’t miss the Historic Leyburn Sprints, held every August, to commemorate the Australian Grand Prix hosted here in 1949 (22-23 August 2020). • Head off on the Leyburn Historical Plaques trail, with 24 stops in town and 11 more in the surrounding areas. • Settle in and soak up the atmosphere with a hearty counter lunch at The Royal Hotel, noted as the oldest continually licensed hotel (c.1863) in Queensland. • Visit the ‘Z Special Unit’ memorial located at Liberator Park. The Leyburn aerodrome was originally constructed for the Z Force secret commandos during World War II. • Nearby Pratten was once a bustling goldfield. Visitors can still try their luck at Thanes Creek fossicking reserve.

Historic Leyburn Sprints

Yangan The little village of Yangan sits on Swan Creek at the head of the picturesque Swanfels Valley. The town developed around the early industries of the Valley, with a police station, school and church existing prior to 1884. The sandstone used in many of Warwick’s magnificent buildings including the police station and town hall, was quarried in this area. It’s a pretty drive or a two-hour return cycle on the Settlers Route from Warwick, past ploughed fields, a patchwork of lucerne and sorghum, and even sunflowers in summer. You’ll see beautifully restored buildings reflecting the glory of a bygone era.

Things to do • The Yangan Masonic Hall was originally built as the School of Arts (circa 1898). • Get along to the annual Heavy Horse Day on Mick Bradford’s property for a look at horse-powered farming early settler-style. Historic Warwick & Surrounds Sitting on the banks of the Condamine River, historic Warwick was settled over 150 years ago and has an interesting story to tell.

History trail highlights

Botanist Allan Cunningham ventured on to the Darling Downs in 1827 and discovered a gap in the formidable Great Dividing Range. The rich grazing land was like gold to the settlers, who were eager to make their fortune in a new land. In 1840 at the age of 25, Patrick Leslie, with the aid of a tracker but no map, rode more than 200 miles beyond the furthest limits of settlement in New South Wales, in search of the pastoral paradise described to him by Cunningham, to settle on what is now known as the Southern Downs. The slab hut built by Patrick, Walter and George Leslie is still in use today on the Canning Downs Thoroughbred Stud, a few kilometres from the centre of Warwick. The town was gazetted in 1847 and land sales began in 1850.

• Take a drive to visit the Allora & District Historical Society Museums and the Mary Poppins House, where author PL Travers grew up. • Head to the Killarney Heritage Centre, which specialises in family history. • Take a trip on the Southern Downs Steam Railway’s C17 locomotive. • Discover firsthand how graziers lived with a visit to the stunning sandstone Glengallan Homestead and Heritage Centre, 15km north of Warwick. • Drive the Settlers Route, a 72km round trip which incorporates a number of small historical villages. See page 42. • Take a drive to nearby Yangan – rich in rural history, it was one of the first early settlements. By 1844 squatters had taken up four major holdings that covered a vast area of the Granite Belt. The Crown Land Act of 1868 led to an influx of selectors, as well as enabling shepherds and other farm labourers to acquire land of their own. Tin was first found here in 1854 but the ‘rush’ did not occur until 1872 when gold, silver, copper and other important minerals were also found. As the settlement grew in importance, Quart Pot Creek, as it was then known, was changed to Stannum (Latin for tin). Later the name was gazetted as Stanthorpe, literally meaning ‘tin town’.

planted here in the 1860s with encouragement from the local Catholic parish priest Father Jerome Davadi, in order to produce altar wine. His Italian descent made grape growing and wine production a familiar pastime and the rest, as they say, is history.

Enjoy the spectacle of Spring Creek plunging 40m over a sheer basalt rock face at Queen Mary Falls – a popular picnic destination. Explore a short 400m walk leading to a lookout overlooking the breathtaking falls. From late October to November, look out for fireflies and glow worms at dusk – an absolute must-see.

Discover evidence of pioneer travel routes over the Great Dividing Range and enjoy views of the Fassifern Valley at historic Spicers Gap.

Don’t miss: Explore walking tracks, ranging from short easy circuits to longer tracks (5–12km), showcasing woodland and rainforest, creeks and waterfalls and scenic lookouts. Watch for echidnas, koalas, satin bowerbirds and yellow-tailed black cockatoos. Best short walk: Sylvesters Lookout is a 940m return trail suitable for visitors with some bushwalking experience. Immerse yourself in lush subtropical rainforest where fern and orchid clad trees tower over the track and enjoy rewarding views from the Main Range escarpment to the rugged peaks of the Scenic Rim. Getting there: The Park is located 97km from Toowoomba or 54km from Warwick. The last 6km is unsealed and may be closed after heavy rain.

Best short walk: Queen Mary Falls circuit, a 2km well defined walking track is suitable for visitors with some bushwalking experience. Delight in the cool spray and refreshing scent of Spring Creek, which plunges 40m over Queen Mary Falls. Snap a photo of the falls from the bridge beneath or the lookout above, and spot the well-camouflaged eastern water dragons around the creek’s edge. Getting there: To access the park take the Falls Drive tourist route, a steep but sealed approach from Boonah along the BoonahKillarney Road. A more accessible route is via Killarney, about 40km south-east of Warwick, 11km along the Killarney-Boonah Road. Weather and water levels permitted, 4x4 Travellers can add a round trip route through Cambanoora Gorge, crossing the Condamine River 14 times (see page 36).

Don’t miss: Follow the trail of old bullock days and look for signs of the paved road built in the mid-1800s. Picnic near the site of a long-gone inn and pioneer graveyard and enjoy the view from Governor’s Chair Lookout. Best short walk: Moss’s Well is a short 120m return track, suitable for families with young children. Spot birds in tall open forest and imagine yourself back in the days when this well was the only water for travellers and their teams making their way over the range. Getting there: Take the Spicers Gap turnoff from the Cunningham Highway, 5km west of Aratula. The last 5km of Spicers Gap Road is unsealed and steep in places.

Sundown National Park

Girraween National Park The word Girraween is an Aboriginal name for ‘place of flowers’ and in spring and summer it really lives up to its name as delicate spring wildflowers emerge beneath the towering granite boulders. Don’t miss: From the Castle Rock and Bald Rock Creek camping areas, explore some of the 17km of walking tracks. Climb the First Pyramid to see Balancing Rock and for great views over the park. Watch for blue wrens, yellow-tufted honey eaters, bearded dragons and perhaps a common wombat. Superb lyrebirds live here, but are rarely seen. Best short walk: The Granite Arch 1.6km return trail is suitable for families with young children. Take delight in the details – an amazing rock sculpture, a delicate wildflower or a picture postcard scene. Stand under a magnificent natural stone archway and take a breather beside Bald Rock Creek’s tumbling cascades. Getting there: The 9km, winding bitumen road to the park is located 26km south of Stanthorpe via the New England Highway, or 11km north of Wallangarra at the turn-off to Wyberba.

Sundown National Park On the Qld/NSW border, experience the rugged wilderness of Sundown National Park, featuring spectacular steep-sided gorges, sharp ridges and peaks rising to more than 1000m. Don’t miss: Camp at defined camping areas or hike into a bush camp. From the Broadwater camping area at the park’s southern end, stroll the 1km graded walk to Permanent Waterhole or, if you’re experienced, explore the Severn River. You will need a four-wheeldrive vehicle to access Red Rock Falls and camp sites along the river at the park’s northern end. Tackle the two-day circuit starting at the park’s eastern boundary and taking in Mount Lofty and Red Rock Falls. Best short walk: Red Rock Gorge lookout is a 500m return trail and is suitable for visitors with some bushwalking experience. Enjoy the wild isolation of rugged wilderness ranges from a cliff edge where pink, lichenstained granite reflects changing hues of the shifting sun. Watch peregrine falcons dive onto unsuspecting prey and, in winter, hear mimicking lyrebirds call from deep within the gorge. Getting there: The Broadwater camping area is accessible off Stanthorpe Texas Rd, which leads onto Glenlyon Dam Rd. Burrows Waterhole camping area is accessible off Sundown Rd and the trip to the site includes 20km of rough 4WD track.

Bald Rock National Park, NSW Located just on the New South Wales side of the border, the 8000ha Bald Rock National Park is the largest of a series of granite domes, where you can explore granite canyons, stone arches and echo points.

Don’t miss: Take a trail to Bald Rock or Little Bald Rock and be rewarded with views into Girraween National Park. Enjoy a shady picnic, spot wildlife and see many different bird species. Getting there: From Stanthorpe take the sealed road east across the state border to Amosfield, run south on the Mount Lindesay Road towards Tenterfield and turn right into the 6km Bald Rock National Park access road – about 40km.

Basket Swamp National Park, NSW Located 15 kilometres north east of Tenterfield, the 2820ha park is an important wetland of heaths and sedges, named after Basket Swamp, a waterlogged area in the western area of the park.

Don’t miss: Saddle up and explore 21km of horse-riding trails or bushwalk to Timbarra Lookout, Basket Swamp Falls and the Woollool Woolloolni Aboriginal Place for magnificent views of granite tors. As the park has no toilets or barbecues and patchy mobile phone reception, walkers and riders must be self-reliant. Getting there: From Stanthorpe take the sealed road east across the state border to Amosfield, run south on the Mount Lindesay Road towards Tenterfield and turn left into Lindrook Rd and follow signs to the park (partly unpaved) – about 57km. Boonoo Boonoo National Park, NSW

27km from Tenterfield, Boonoo Boonoo National Park has a stunning waterfall, secluded swimming holes, hiking tracks, camping areas, accommodation and picnic spots.

Don’t miss: Head to the lookout for views of Boonoo Boonoo River cascading over the granite cliff edge to become a spectacular waterfall that plunges 210m into the gorge below. Take a walk and a dip in secluded rock pools along the river, watch out for wildflowers in spring. Getting there: From Stanthorpe take the sealed road east across the state border to Amosfield, run south on the Mount Lindesay Road towards Tenterfield and turn left into Boonoo Boonoo Falls Road and follow signs to the park (partly unpaved) – about 58km.

Mount Superbus Hike Mount Superbus, near Killarney, is the highest peak in south-east Queensland and features epic inclines, panoramic views and thick rainforest. Only experienced bush walkers can tackle the self-guided half-day hike to the Lincoln Bomber plane wreck. Note: you must inform the Killarney Police Station of your intention to undertake the hike at least 24 hours in advance. Carrying a GPS, compasses and UHF radios is strongly recommended. A point-by-point route map is available from the Warwick Visitor Information Centre.

Donnelly's Castle Donnelly’s Castle is a granite rock formation that you can walk between, around and over! The massive boulders are just as spectacular as some of the rock formations in Girraween National Park, but are far more accessible for young adventurers. The original bushranger hideout for ‘Thunderbolt’, the site offers hidden passageways to explore as well as spectacular views from the 200 metre walk to the top.

Mount Marlay For a panoramic view over Stanthorpe, Mt Marlay lookout and picnic area is the spot to drive to. Located within Stanthorpe itself, the lookout is only a short drive from the CBD. Don’t miss the easy walk around the summit. The mountain also features four mountain biking tracks.

Guided Walks Spring Creek Mountain Trail Keen walkers can join the guided 35km Spring Creek Mountain Trail which follows the old Rabbit Board Fence from near Killarney to the foothills of Wilson’s Peak; spectacular walking over a manageable three days with a night of camping and a night in a cottage. Spicers Scenic Rim Trail Join a guided 2-day or 5-day walk through the forests and subtropical rainforests of Mount Mitchell in the World Heritage listed Main Range National Park. Four Wheel Driving Sundown National Park You’ll find some of the region’s best four-wheel-driving in Sundown National Park, south west of Stanthorpe. Sundown is high, remote and rough and entices selfsufficient campers, experienced bushwalkers and keen 4WDers. Terrain is rocky and can be challenging, but spectacular views of the park’s ranges are the prize. Good clearance and low range are recommended.

Other 4WD Tracks • The Springs 4x4 Adventure Park, Warwick • Janowen Hills 4x4 Park, Goomburra • Gordon Country, Goomburra • Talgai, Gambubal, Goomburra and Leyburn State Forests • Emu Creek Road in the Emu Vale Valley, east of Warwick, is appropriately named after the creek, which the track crosses several times, before concluding at the base of Mount Superbus.

The Condamine River Road in Killarney’s Cambanoora Gorge is perfect for respectful four wheel drivers, hikers, horse riders and mountain bikers. Once you cross the first cattle grid, adjust to ‘country mode’ – slow down, breathe the fresh air, look for wildlife and stop for a swim at one of the crossings. Please note, the Gorge is not a 4WD track or adventure park. It is a public road bordered by private property, so please be respectful of the natural environment and abide by the speed limits. Cycling For road cyclists, mountain bikers or leisure riders, the Southern Downs and Granite Belt is a great place to cycle. Clean, crisp country air and a network of quiet scenic routes provide ideal cycling conditions. Discover the delights of the region on a ride around the historic buildings of Warwick, the vineyards of the Granite Belt or the relatively flat roads around our country villages.

Mountain Biking Head to Stanthorpe’s newly opened Mt Marlay MTB Trail network, which features a variety of trails suitable for all riders. The mix of granite rock and numerous different soil types give these trails a unique riding experience. Also in the Stanthorpe area are two popular trails at Passchendaele State Forest and Broadwater State Forest. In Killarney, tackle the 14 River Crossings of the Condamine River on your mountain bike (not passable during wet weather).

Granite Belt Bike Trail Set off along country roads on this marked 34km trail that starts at Stanthorpe’s picturesque creek-scape and meanders through country back roads towards Ballandean, Queensland’s most rewarded wine region. Cycle past farms and vineyards, stopping off at cellar doors and to sample local produce along the way.

Rest stops, signage, toilets and bike racks are provided en route to ensure your journey is comfortable, safe and memorable. The bike trail is shared use with motor vehicles, so take care, be safe and be aware of your surroundings. Granite Belt Bicycle Tours offers guided tours and bike hire packages for adults and children, with bikes delivered to your accommodation and a support vehicle available.

Golf Join the locals for a relaxed game – on our country courses more often than not the kangaroos outnumber the golfers! Allora Sports Club on Dalrymple Creek is a quaint semi-private 9-hole course. Nonmembers should contact the club to enquire about opportunities to play. Killarney Golf Club, close to town, is a relaxed country course offering 9 holes – the perfect morning’s golf before a walk and a picnic at Queen Mary Falls. Stanthorpe Golf & Country Club is a beautiful course offering 10 holes, 18 tees, a Par 72 and a resident population of around 100 eastern grey kangaroos. Players can hire equipment and golf carts and green fees are very modest. Facilities include a licenced bar, two bowling greens and a croquet club. Warwick Golf Club is a parkland-style golf course, offering 18 holes with a Par 69. Weekly 9 and 18-hole competitions are open to visiting golfers. The clubhouse offers a bar, coffee, lunch and dinner, and a pro-shop motorised cart and club hire.

Trail Riding

Australia’s most famous rodeo Celebrating the traditions of life on the land, the famous Warwick Rodeo & Gold Cup Campdraft takes place annually on the last full weekend of October. Competitors vie for the prestige and bragging rights of ’winning Warwick’, which boasts Australia’s richest campdrafting prizes.

Warwick’s Morgan Park is the Queensland State Equestrian Centre for Polocrosse and eventing, hosting a number of national events annually. Catch a match or visit the Australian Polocrosse Museum onsite.

Watch out for race days at Allman Park in Warwick and Armstrong Park in Stanthorpe. Frock up, dust off the fascinator and enjoy a flutter in a laidback country setting.

Saddle up and explore the region on horseback. Join Bestbrook Mountain Resort or Cherrabah Resort on a trail ride or take your horse exploring along the picturesque Bicentennial National Trail or just over the border to the trails of Boonoo Boonoo National Park. In August, head out to Cambanoora Gorge, near Killarney for the annual Waddle, Saddle & Pedal – an event for horse riders, cyclists and walkers to enjoy the historic Condamine River Road without the presence of cars.

Morgan Park Raceway, Warwick is one of Australia’s leading motorsport venues with events attracting hundreds of competitors and spectators almost every weekend. Carnell Raceway, Stanthorpe offers a 990m sealed circuit track with a drag strip, control tower, spectator viewing areas and competitor paddock. Events include drag and motorbike races, drifting, sprints and short circuit races for sedans and open wheelers.

The Sandy Creek Raceway, Allan is just 11.5km from Warwick, and known to be one of the fastest tracks in Queensland. It’s the home of the Warwick Kart Club and hosts at least one major event a month including championships, carnivals, grade titles and professional touring events. The Historic Leyburn Sprints are hosted by the country town of Leyburn over an action-packed weekend each August to commemorate Queensland’s first-ever Australian Grand Prix held here in 1949. The town’s streets are closed and 10,000 people gather to watch more than 200 classic cars race against the clock. Don’t miss it!

Travelling west from Warwick along the Cunningham Highway, the route passes through the districts of Allan, Leslie and Cunningham (named after the explorers) and then through the once thriving gold rush townships of Pratten and Leyburn and finally onto Karara and Thane.

Travelling north from Warwick on the Cunningham Highway, this historic route takes you through a number of small villages via stunning scenery and the mountainous backdrop of Main Range National Park.

• Beautiful farmland and historical villages in the foothills of Main Range, once part of Canning Downs Station (est. 1840).

• Sandy Creek Raceway and top counter meals at the Sandy Creek Pub (c.1913). • Fishing at Leslie Reserve on the banks of Sandy Creek. • Memorial Park in Cunningham has two cairns which honour the fallen soldiers of both World Wars and Patrick Leslie, one of the first settlers to the area.

Travel north from Warwick along the Cunningham Highway and take Goomburra Road east to commence the Cedar Route which takes in Goomburra and Freestone. The route was named after the red cedar trees felled by the area’s pioneering timbergetters using basic tools and bullocks.

The Granite Belt was part of the resettlement scheme for returning soldiers of World War I. The veterans named their farms, and the roads linking them, after battles in which they had fought. North-west of Stanthorpe, Armistice Way travels along Amiens Road past fruit and vegetable farms through the tiny hamlets and old railway sidings of Amiens, Bapaume, Passchendaele, Bullecourt, Pozieres and Fleurbaix.

Travel south-west from Stanthorpe to Texas and the Bruxner Highway.

Route highlights • Glengallan Homestead and Heritage Centre – built of sandstone in 1867, it’s one of the state’s few remaining substantial 19th century country houses. • The Goomburra Section of Main Range National Park – walks, waterfalls, swimming, birdwatching and picnicking. • Mt Dumaresq – it was from the top of this mountain that Allan Cunningham declared the Darling Downs ‘as far as the eye can see’. • Between Freestone and Warwick you’ll see a patchwork of oats, sorghum, wheat and sunflowers growing on some of the most fertile land in the district. • In Freestone, music still rings out in the Freestone Hall at regular old-style country dances.

Route highlights • Try preservative-free liqueurs beers and wines at Castle Glen. • Walk 200m to the top of Donnelly’s Castle for breathtaking valley views. Legend has it Thunderbolt the bushranger hid out in these granite boulders and caves. • Sip Strange Birds at Boireann Winery; enjoy lunch and taste the renowned Verdelho at Robert Channon Wines. • Take in soaring views from Passchendaele State Forest lookout and fossick for gold at Swiper's Gully.

Oracles Way 64km Travelling south-east from Stanthorpe, the route crosses the border into New South Wales, and continues south to Tenterfield via Amosfield.

Route highlights • Undercliffe Falls, via Liston, descend 150m over a 30-metre-wide rock face into a deep pool. • Detour to Aloomba Lavender Farm for Devonshire Tea. • Bald Rock, in Bald Rock National Park (and adjoining Girraween National Park) rises to 1277m above sea level and towers about 200m above of the surrounding bushland. Continue on the Falls Drive, stopping at Spring Creek Mountain Café for lunch. Check out Carr’s Lookout before heading home to Brisbane via Boonah.

Day two Explore the town’s history and heritage buildings. Don’t miss Abbey of the Roses, Pringle Cottage, Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre, the Town Hall and other historical sites. When to come The short answer is any time is a great time to visit us! We’re blessed with the delights of four distinct seasons, so there’s always something different to experience, seasonal produce to sample and events to catch.

Spring

Sunny days give way to perfectly cool nights. Orchards are heaving with apple blossoms, pretty wildflowers dot the granite trails in Girraween National Park, it’s berry and cherry season and many new wine releases are celebrated with events across the region.

Summer

Escape the coast’s humidity – go chasing waterfalls near Killarney, explore the cooler mountain trails of the Goomburra Valley, take a dip in a meandering creek, sink your teeth into juicy stone fruit and admire our stunning sunflower fields.

Autumn

Experience the cool relief and rich colours Autumn brings to our countryside as the deciduous landscapes turn to hues of crimson and gold. Celebrate the grape harvest with us, stop at roadside stalls for fresh figs, sweet strawberries and crisp apples and sit by a campfire and gaze at clear starry skies.

Winter

Brrrh! Brass Monkey Season as we like to call it, means you’re going to have to snuggle up in front of a roaring fire with a glass of local red. Frosty mornings morph into crisp clear days perfect for exploring. Join us at events likes Snowflakes in Stanthorpe and Jumpers & Jazz in July to celebrate the cool climate. You might even experience a surprise snowfall – like we had in July 2015!
