Department awarded federal grant The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has received a $73,000 federal grant to purchase body cameras for deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to purchase 292 body cameras. The body cameras will be worn by sworn members of the Sheriff’s Office who interact with the public on a daily basis.

This will include more than just first responders and comprises the following divisions: Corrections, Court Security, Criminal Investigations, Highway Patrol, Marine Unit, Warrants and Sheriff’s Gang Task Force. “The body cameras will give the Sheriff’s Office the ability to stay at the front of cutting edge technologies,� said Raymond Rose, Lake County Undersheriff. “Both the public and the sheriff’s deputy will benefit from this grant. Law enforcement is under tremendous scrutiny in an age where every action taken can be dissected in an instant. “This now gives us the ability to both teach and learn while at the same time

enhance mutual trust which is necessary for us to be successful in our mission.�

The Department of Justice announced $20 million for a new Body Worn-Camera Pilot Implementation Program in May 2015 as part of a broader effort to expand funding and training to law enforcement agencies through community policing initiatives. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was one of 258 applicants requesting funding and one of 73 to be awarded the funding.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office was one of only three Illinois law enforcement agencies to be awarded this funding. Chicago Police Department and Elgin Police Department are the other two agencies.

Sheriff Mark Curran said his department is grateful to Sen. Dick Durbin for his assistance in securing the grant.

The Sheriff’s Office will be the largest Lake County law enforcement agency to deploy body cameras.

are state employees who work for the Chief Judge of the Circuit in which they are employed. They must be licensed in the State of Illinois as Certified Shorthand Reporters (CSR). Court reporters make a verbatim record of all that is said in court proceedings. In an average day, a reporter may write anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 words. Current-

ly, the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit has 39 judges while there are 21 authorized official court reporter positions and one supervisor position for Lake County.

Circuit Judge Jorge Ortiz had the honor of swearing in Allen-Williams and Cohen-Rojas as ILCRA officers at ILCRA’s Annual Convention held Sept. 10 to 12 in Springfield.

Rotary Club dinner, auction are Saturday The annual pork chop dinner and auction hosted by the Antioch Rotary Club is Saturday in Father Hanley Hall at St. Peter School in Antioch.

The dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m., with the auction being held from 7 to 10 p.m. A cash bar will be available.

Advance tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Antioch State Bank of the Lakes, Travel by Design or from any Antioch Rotarian.

Tickets at the door will be $30.

For the price of a ticket, an individual gets two barbecued pork chops, a beverage of choice, entry into

the auction with a bidder’s number, and a chance to win a $500 cash raffle prize.

The proceeds of the night will go to the Antioch Rotary Scholarship fund and to its general fund. Each year the Rotary Club of Antioch awards approximately 25 to 30 college and vocational scholarships and funds several high school students to participate in the Rotary International Youth Exchange year long program.

The general fund is used to help local charities, service organizations and notfor-profit groups meet their financial needs.

Over the past several years, the Rotary Club of

Antioch has donated more than $225,000 to local community organizations.

Each club member has donated a gift of at least $200 value to be auctioned.

Auction items might include such things as golf clubs, artwork, crystal, sporting goods, spa treatment, lawn furniture, one-week vacation trips, special dinner packages and much more.

Many area businesses and private citizens have donated items of equal value to both the live and silent auction sections for the event.

Deputies revive man from suspected overdose A pair of Lake County Sheriff’s deputies armed with Narcan were able to revive a 28-year-old man following a suspected heroin overdose Sept. 24.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., the deputies responded to the 28200 block of West Oak Street, Wauconda, for a report of an unresponsive man.

Shortly after arriving on scene Deputies Zacharias and Markoya ascertained the man was likely suffering from an opiate overdose.

Zacharias administered a dose of naloxone (Narcan) to the man using an auto-injector issued by the Sheriff’s Office.

The man did not respond and Deputy Markoya administered a second dose of naloxone. After the second dose, the man began to breathe normally and started to regain consciousness.

He was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for treatment.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office trains all of its personnel to administer naloxone.

All Sheriff’s Deputies are equipped with Naloxone in an effort to combat opioid over-

dose. The life saved by Deputy Zacharias and Deputy Markoya is the eighth life saved this year to opioid overdose by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, according to officials.

Judge John T. Phillips, Chief Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, was recognized recently as one of three recipients of a “Judicial Icon” award from the Illinois Judges Foundation.

Judge Jeanne Reynolds bestowed the award on behalf of the Foundation. She cited Phillips’ commitment to service and restorative justice as the reason for his selection.

Phillips was the first judge to volunteer for a project called the “One Book, One Judge, One Goal,” taking time to read to primary school children. He also recruited other judges to follow suit and remains enthusiastic about the activity.

“The teachers love the program, the students look forward to having a judge read to them, and the judges are thrilled to see the excitement on all their faces,” Phillips said. “Hopefully, we have made a good and lasting impression on them and have helped create a continuing interest in reading.”

In addition to the judges’ individual awards, 500 books will be donated by the Foundation to primary grade students in the name of each honoree.

Reynolds also spoke about Phillips’ leadership role and commitment to treatment courts in Lake County and throughout the state.

She said, “Judge John Phillips has

faithfully served in every division of the 19th Circuit, but perhaps he found his true passion as he took the lead as the chair of the Multi-Disciplinary Steering Committee that created and established the specialty courts for drug treatment, mental health and veterans’ assistance. The two other recipients included Honorable Diane P. Wood, Chief Judge of the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis.

Phillips thanked the Foundation and quipped, “When I heard I was being recognized with the likes of distinguished judges such as Judge Wood and Justice Theis, I thought it was akin to a concert tour where Beyoncé and Rihanna are joined on stage by Kermit the Frog.”

Originally appointed as an associate judge, Judge Phillips was elected as circuit judge in November 2006. In 2013, he was unanimously elected as chief judge by his peers and re-elected in 2014 to serve as chief judge until January. Phillips has been on the bench for more than 22 years.

About 150 Illinois Judges Foundation members and guests attended the event at The Chicago Bar Association headquarters in Chicago.

Construction is winding down and the intersection improvement project at Rollins Road and Highway 83 is nearly complete.

The community is invited to help celebrate the completion of the largest construction project in the Lake County Division of Transportation’s history on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The event will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Gateway Park, 704 E. Clarendon Drive, Round Lake Beach.

Gateway Park is on the southwest corner of Rollins Road and Hainesville Road.

Vernita Allen-Williams and Deborah Cohen-Rojas, Official Court Reporters for the 19th Judicial Circuit, have been elected as officers of the Illinois Court Reporters Association.

ILCRA is a professional organization for court reporters and is the state arm of the National Court Reporters Association. Allen-Williams will serve as president and Cohen-Rojas as secretary. Their term of office, which began on Sept. 12, is for two years.

Allen-Williams attended Madison Business College in Madison, Wis., where she earned an AA degree in court and convention reporting.

She has been a reporter for the Lake County court system for over 18 years. Cohen-Rojas received her BA degree from Carthage College in 1998 and finished the College of Court Reporting in 2007. She joined the Circuit in October 2009.

are state employees who work for the Chief Judge of the Circuit in which they are employed. They must be licensed in the State of Illinois as Certified Shorthand Reporters (CSR). Court reporters make a verbatim record of all that is said in court proceedings. In an average day, a reporter may write anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 words. Current-

ly, the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit has 39 judges while there are 21 authorized official court reporter positions and one supervisor position for Lake County.

Circuit Judge Jorge Ortiz had the honor of swearing in Allen-Williams and Cohen-Rojas as ILCRA officers at ILCRA’s Annual Convention held Sept. 10 to 12 in Springfield.

County gets second donation of overdose drug Lake County officials recently received a second donation of 3,000 naloxone kits to help sheriff deputies revive victims of heroin and other opiate overdoses.

Virginia-based kaléo is matching last year’s donation of 3,000 kits of EVZIO (naloxone HCI injection), to the Health Department. Each kit contains two single-dose auto-injectors containing the drug naloxone and a trainer for practice.

In cooperation with the Lake County Opioid Initiative, the Lake County Health Department’s Substance Abuse Program provides training to police officers in Lake County who in turn train their peers.

The trained officers carry the auto-injectors in their squad

cars and use them to administer naloxone when responding to a call of a suspected opioid overdose. Voice and visual cues help to guide each officer through the injection process.

The naloxone temporarily reverses the effect of an opioid, keeping the victim breathing until emergency aid arrives.

“Lake County is facing a serious heroin problem. By putting these auto-injectors into the hands of police officers and first responders, victims are given a second chance at life,” Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor said. “We are very thankful for this donation that will truly save lives.”

Heroin deaths have increased sharply in many

states, according to a report of death certificate data from 28 states published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Two things appear to be driving the increase in heroin overdoses: (1) widespread prescription opioid exposure and increasing rates of opioid addiction; and (2) increased heroin supply. Heroin often costs less than prescription opioids and is increasingly available.

“Fifty-nine opioid deaths took place in Lake County in 2014,” said the Health Department’s Executive Director Tony Beltran. “We are grateful to kaléo for helping the County address this growing concern.”

Deputies revive man from suspected overdose A pair of Lake County Sheriff’s deputies armed with Narcan were able to revive a 28-year-old man following a suspected heroin overdose Sept. 24.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., the deputies responded to the 28200 block of West Oak Street, Wauconda, for a report of an unresponsive man.

Shortly after arriving on scene Deputies Zacharias and Markoya ascertained the man was likely suffering from an opiate overdose.

Zacharias administered a dose of naloxone (Narcan) to the man using an auto-injector issued by the Sheriff’s Office.

The man did not respond and Deputy Markoya administered a second dose of naloxone. After the second dose, the man began to breathe normally and started to regain consciousness.

He was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for treatment.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office trains all of its personnel to administer naloxone.

All Sheriff’s Deputies are equipped with Naloxone in an effort to combat opioid over-

dose. The life saved by Deputy Zacharias and Deputy Markoya is the eighth life saved this year to opioid overdose by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, according to officials.

Judge John T. Phillips, Chief Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, was recognized recently as one of three recipients of a “Judicial Icon” award from the Illinois Judges Foundation.

Judge Jeanne Reynolds bestowed the award on behalf of the Foundation. She cited Phillips’ commitment to service and restorative justice as the reason for his selection.

Phillips was the first judge to volunteer for a project called the “One Book, One Judge, One Goal,” taking time to read to primary school children. He also recruited other judges to follow suit and remains enthusiastic about the activity.

“The teachers love the program, the students look forward to having a judge read to them, and the judges are thrilled to see the excitement on all their faces,” Phillips said. “Hopefully, we have made a good and lasting impression on them and have helped create a continuing interest in reading.”

In addition to the judges’ individual awards, 500 books will be donated by the Foundation to primary grade students in the name of each honoree.

Reynolds also spoke about Phillips’ leadership role and commitment to treatment courts in Lake County and throughout the state.

She said, “Judge John Phillips has

The two other recipients included Honorable Diane P. Wood, Chief Judge of the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis.

Phillips thanked the Foundation and quipped, “When I heard I was being recognized with the likes of distinguished judges such as Judge Wood and Justice Theis, I thought it was akin to a concert tour where Beyoncé and Rihanna are joined on stage by Kermit the Frog.”

Originally appointed as an associate judge, Judge Phillips was elected as circuit judge in November 2006. In 2013, he was unanimously elected as chief judge by his peers and re-elected in 2014 to serve as chief judge until January. Phillips has been on the bench for more than 22 years.

About 150 Illinois Judges Foundation members and guests attended the event at The Chicago Bar Association headquarters in Chicago.

Vernita Allen-Williams and Deborah Cohen-Rojas, Official Court Reporters for the 19th Judicial Circuit, have been elected as officers of the Illinois Court Reporters Association.

ILCRA is a professional organization for court reporters and is the state arm of the National Court Reporters Association. Allen-Williams will serve as president and Cohen-Rojas as secretary. Their term of office, which began on Sept. 12, is for two years.

Allen-Williams attended Madison Business College in Madison, Wis., where she earned an AA degree in court and convention reporting.

She has been a reporter for the Lake County court system for over 18 years. Cohen-Rojas received her BA degree from Carthage College in 1998 and finished the College of Court Reporting in 2007. She joined the Circuit in October 2009.

She has a large ‘pursenality’ A recent morning news show featured a segment on purses and what a handbag reveals about your personality. I watched with interest since less than 24 hours earlier my purse had saved me from grave bodily injury.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

If purses reveal our personalities, I am a study in contrasts. I jockey between two bags. The first is minimalist: tiny, with enough room for a cell phone, small wallet and maybe a chapstick or pen – but not both.

My other purse is maximalist. It contains everything needed for survival, and then some. In

it I carry pepper spray and a mini stun gun because a girl can never be too careful.

There’s a crank flashlight in case of power outages, a small notebook for when a fabulous idea hits me, gum for garlic situations, a charging cord and outlet thingy for my phone, a blanket and umbrella in the event of inclement weather, bottled water for thirsty times, a brush, mirror and makeup for primping, Pepto

Bismol tablets – just in case and chapstick and pen (plenty of room for both).

Some people have a bag packed with items needed for survival in case of natural disaster or emergency. These are called bug out bags. I don’t need a bug out bag; I have my purse.

As I alluded earlier, last night my purse nearly saved my life. And it had nothing to do with the pepper spray or stun gun.

My husband, oldest son and I were at a youth football game watching our youngest son. Rain threatened, so I packed not one but three umbrellas into my big bug out purse.

I jammed them in next to

the blanket and pepper spray and we were ready for the game – rain or shine or whatever else we might encounter. Prepared is my middle initial.

The rain did come.

And the lightning that accompanied it put a halt to the game. As we ran across the road to our parked car, my foot caught on an uneven bump in the pavement and I went down.

Fast. And hard. I didn’t even have time to see my life flash before my eyes.

I didn’t even know I was falling until I was lying face down on the road with a car zooming toward me.

My husband was quickly by my side, clearly concerned.

I did what most people do after they’ve fallen in an embarrassing manner.

I hopped up and tried to pretend it never happened.

As I made my way to the car I assessed my injuries.

Surprisingly, there were next to none. I had two minor scratches on my hands where they’d hit the pavement. Otherwise, I was intact and injury-free. I honestly couldn’t believe it.

During the ride home, my husband described the accident. He’d observed the ugly tumble in its entirety and knew why I hadn’t done a complete face plant.

My purse – jam-packed with three umbrellas and a blanket – hit the ground before me and cushioned

my fall. Thank goodness for the threatening rain.

Some say a purse, and its contents, reveals a lot about your personality.

Sometimes it shows you to be a survivor, whether that entails pepper spray, gum or a good old blanket.

Moral of the story? Never make fun of a girl with a big purse. She (and it) may save someone’s life some day.

DOT to install more signals at site of fatal crash

A two-vehicle crash at the Burlington bypass intersection of highways 83 and 36 Sept.

Tyler Brott, 21, a Town of Burlington resident, died at the scene of the crash. The other driver, David Henning – also from the Town of Burlington – was taken by Flight for Life to

the state Department of Transportation.

City of Burlington Mayor Bob Miller said last week that the DOT will begin installation of left turn signals at the intersection this week.

Miller said this has been raised to the DOT in the past two years, but a shift in funding kept the turn signals from being installed sooner. The intersection has been the site of at least two serious accidents

in the last month.

“It’s unfortunate that we had the amount of accidents we’ve had there before the situation is being addressed,” Miller said.

Crash details A 911 call came into the Racine County Communications Center at 6:51 p.m. Sept.

22, stating that one vehicle had flipped over and one vehicle was possibly on fire.

When deputies and fire and rescue personnel arrived, they discovered that Brott had died in the crash.

Henning was transported by rescue to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington and then taken by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa.

The scene night showed the destructive nature of the crash.

One vehicle had landed by a light pole, and was so man-

gled that a make and model couldn’t be identified at first glance.

The other vehicle, a pickup truck belonging to an area landscaping company, was also severely damaged, with an airbag deployed and the front end demolished.

The intersection remained closed until midnight, when investigators and the Racine County Sheriff’s department finally left the scene.

Silver Lake opts for partial reval Time is too tight to do a full revaluation

There is no time for a physical revaluation of Silver Lake residences in time for the new budget calculations, so the Village Board decided to have Accurate Appraisals conduct a market comparison revaluation by computer this year.

A revaluation has not been done since 2006, prior to the real estate bubble bursting. So village revenues have been based on inflated numbers for those years, according to Village President Bruce Nopenz.

“By law, a reval should have been conducted every two years,” Nopenz said in a recent telephone interview.

“We haven’t even started the budgeting process,” he continued, “and there is no time for the physical reval in time for that.”

The village has requested proposals for appraisal services. The village contracted with Accurate Appraisals to conduct a physical revaluation this year, but it was put off until it was too late.

The village also budgeted $49,000 for the work, but

We prayed together for her daughter and the many other children in the world also suffering due to illness and disease. When we were through the mother thanked me for this moment of peace in her otherwise troubling days.

We talked about her utilities and several other bills she was unable to pay this month. The mother shared with me how hard it was to focus on financial matters and bill payment when she was sitting in the hospital room day and night. We talked about her long treatment plan and how she was faring so far. Her blood work was improving but the side effects from the treatment were devastating.

The poor little girl was going to go through a lot more in the months to come.

The mother said, “I would love for you to come meet my daughter but right now her immune system is too weak. I am the only one visiting and I have to wear a mask and gown. It is like a nightmare. My beautiful little girl is wasting away in front of my eyes.” We talked about the importance of prayer and how it was a way she could help to ease the anxiety she felt. I asked if she belonged to a church and she said she did not, but she did believe in God and

hospital all the time. Please leave her a message so she can call you back when she is able.” I left a message and waited for the mother to return my call.

Several hours later I received a call from the mother. The friend had told her who I was and how she had written to our organization for help.

The mother said, “Hello, is this Sal? I received your message but I’m still not sure if I believe what you said in your message. I’ve been going through this for two months now and not one person other than my friend has offered to help me financially. Is The Time Is Now to Help for real?” I assured her we were definitely for real and always ready to help when people are going through hard times. When I said that the mother replied, “Well, we are definitely going through hard times here but I don’t think you can help with the one thing I want more than anything.”

I heard her voice break and knew she was crying.

Yet for others, the thrill comes in the form of helping others who might not otherwise be able to get up on their own two feet and feel the mist off the rope in their own hair.

With the help of local ski clubs, it’s people like this who are pushing to create a climate where water skiing isn’t just a sport for the abled-bodied, holding adaptive water skiing clinics here in southeastern Wisconsin throughout the summer to help those with special needs hit the lakes for some fun in the sun.

Kurt Roskopf, who considers himself an adaptive water ski provider, along with the help of the Brown’s Lake Aquaducks, Minneiska Ski Team, Lauderdale Aqua Skiers and members of the Wausau Water Walkers and Twin Lakes Aquanuts recently brought this experience to a group of children from Lakeland School in Elkhorn.

“It’s a very collaborative effort,” he said. “When we have a chance to introduce people to the sport we love, we all unite around that passion in our sport.

“It’s a remarkable thing.”

Jessica Meike, who had been a member

of the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers for nearly 30 years and now teaches at Lakeland School, said on Sept. 11, she, Roskopf and the ski teams came together to offer the 10th annual Lakeland Learn to Ski Day. “They were in the water skiing with them, they were helping them out of the water, they were all really involved in this whole event,” she said. “They’ve worked really hard for the past 10 years to allow each year for more and more kids to access this event.”

However, she said, this year was a little different and bigger than ever, including USA Adaptive Water Ski and Rick Legois, a member of the Aquaducks who spends his summer running adaptive learn-to-ski clinics in honor of his daughter, Lynzay, who died in a car crash in 2006.

Meike said with the help of all parties they were able to get five boats out on the water this year, allowing them to bring more than 20 students out for the day, compared to eight in past years.

This year Legois brought out his “Pony Boat,” a basket, or sit ski, which provides an opportunity for the school’s most physically handicapped students to ski without the use of their legs, Meike said.

For others, a boom off the side of the boat helps the young water skiers get up on their feet a bit easier, Meike said.

Meike said for many of the students, this day – the culmination of a three-day camp – marks their single favorite day of

the year. Even the students who weren’t able to participate in the ski-portion of the camp – as it’s currently limited to a certain number of students and is on a first-come, first serve basis – love the water ski show put on by the groups.

“The kids are through the roof,” she said. “They absolutely love to be able to participate, they love being able to work with the skiers from the local ski teams and they’re really excited to have everyone there to ski together and enjoy the day.”

Meike said over the past 10 years the event has been somewhat limited. However, with the addition of the new adaptive ski equipment from Legois, they can open up the event to pretty much any of the students in the school.

“Our goal would really be to open this up so that any kid who wanted to, could,” she said.

With the addition of the Pony Boat and USA Disabled Water ski, Meike said the hope is they can make the event even larger next year, expanding to two days and making the opportunity available to as many students as possible.

To be clear, however, adaptive water ski days aren’t something that are exclusive to Lauderdale Lakes or Lakeland School.

On July 30, the Twin Lake Aquanuts water show team hosted their 15th annual adaptive aquatic clinic for Dreams for Kids, a Chicago-based organization.

an adaptive water ski program at the Aquaducks show site called Wednesdays on Water each summer.

No matter where, however, the goal is the same: to get anyone with a disability out on the water to experience water skiing for themselves.

Changing the sport Meike said with adaptive water skis being incredibly expensive, it’s not something most families would be able to afford to have and it’s events like this that give students exposure to the sport.

However, Roskopf – an ambassador to the Wisconsin Water Ski Federation, an advocate for disabled water skiing for about 25 years and a member of the Wisconsin Council on Physical Disabilities – said this is something he wants to change and feels needs to be changed.

“When it comes to these, some students say it’s their favorite day of the year,” he said.

“That tremendous freedom opportunity, an outlet, it’s enjoyable and just being in the water, swimming is a good thing … some of these particulars are not available to families.”

Roskopf said the sit ski is really a skiing device that is designed for everybody, not just those with disabilities, and is just as legitimate as any other water sport equipment, like knee boards and tubes.

Unfortunately, being as it’s treated like a

medical device, it’s something that’s incredibly expensive, something he doesn’t agree with and feels the water ski world should embrace it like any other piece of ski equipment.

“This way, we can get sit skis in higher production and bring the cost down for everybody,” he said.

Furthermore, Roskopf said, having schools like Lakeland School taking on water ski programs like this in Wisconsin are really the “seeds of greatness for a better future,” which will hopefully peak the interest of the Special Olympics, which does not recognize water skiing at this time.

“The first step is that schools around Wisconsin do what Jessica’s doing at Lakeland School,” he said, noting the 3,000plus member Wisconsin Ski Federation is there to help.

“I really think that is the call to action right now … the unity that water skiing creates, I think, has a lot to offer to the youth of the future.”

While Roskopf said events like this are great, it’s just simply not enough.

“We have these great events like the Lakeland School ski clinic that are one day out of the calendar, but there’s 364 other days that I’m concerned with,” he said.

“The challenge I have for the state of Wisconsin is we need to develop a culture where these students have every opportunity to ski as the 3,000 members of the Wisconsin Water Ski Federation.”

Roskopf said what’s truly important, however, is that everyone is a part of the equation in bringing adaptive water skiing to the forefront. Roskopf said there’s numerous off-season things they’re doing to prepare for the water ski season, noting a think-tank session scheduled for March 1113 at Grand Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva.

“This way, we can have all of our

My daughter’s father is nowhere to be found and even if he was he would not help.

And you come here telling me there are complete strangers that care about us and what we are going through. You have restored my faith in humanity.”

That is what we do together, restore faith, and remove the stress and pains of poverty.

This is not just me going to a fellow creations door and offering assistance. This is all of us together knocking on the door of a stranger that is going through a very tough time and helping to ease their burden. This is thanks to all of us together.

Several months later the mother checked in with me to let all of us know how her daughter was doing. I could hear the smile in her voice as she told me how her daughter was officially in remission and coming home soon. She thanked us for all the help over the past months that enabled her to fully concentrate on just her daughter, not the day to day bills and worries. She said, “This was the biggest blessing during the worst time of my

Residents urged to complete health survey The Live Well Lake County Steering Committee and Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center are asking county residents who received an invitation letter regarding a health survey to respond as soon as possible.

The information they supply will be used to help identify health needs in their neighborhoods. This survey will guide community health improvement plans and support better health outcomes for all county residents, according to officials involved in the effort.

During the first week of September, invitation letters were sent to 5,000 randomly selected households in the county. Questions included in this anonymous survey address key health priorities including traditional priorities such as chronic disease. Emerging

health topics such as mental health, access to care and substance use are also included.

Just one adult (18 years or older) with the most recent birthday from each selected household is asked to respond to the invitation via an online form or by calling a toll-free number. Whether using the phone or online option, respondents should be able to complete the survey in 20 minutes or less.

Results of the survey will be made available on the Health Department’s website in its Community Health Status Assessment early next year.

rating may reduce local premiums Upgrade takes effect in October The rating for the Spring Grove Fire Protection District will be upgraded in October, creating the potential for lower property insurance premiums for residents.

The district has had a Class 6 ISO rating for the past 10 years. A recent survey in April 2015 updated that rating to Class 5. It is effective Oct. 1, according to officials.

The ISO rating is determined by surveying the district’s fire equipment and operations, the village’s water system, hauled water (for areas without hydrants), dispatch and fire prevention.

Points are awarded based on predetermined criteria.

Many insurance companies

rely on the ISO rating to determine premiums that businesses and homeowners pay for their insurance.

While the improvement from Class 6 to Class 5 (throughout the district) may mean a reduction in the premiums residents are charged, other factors determined by insurance companies may limit savings. Residents are advised to contact their insurance agents after Oct. 1 to see if they receive a reduced premium.

Some homes and businesses may also be eligible for a discount based on their proximity to a fire hydrant (or the dry hydrant in the Forest Ridge Subdivision).

Leaves are collected along the curbs of streets using a truck-mounted vacuum.

This year’s collection dates are Oct. 16 and 23 and

Nov. 13 and 20. Dates may change due to weather, according to village officials Residents are advised to have leaves raked to the curb by 6 a.m. on collection days.

The village final brush pick up is scheduled for Nov. 19. That date is also variable due to weather conditions.

A free tire recycling event sponsored by the McHenry County Department of Health will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon at the McHenry County Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Woodstock.

Grant funding for the event is provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health via Used Tire Management Fund.

Tires will be recycled by: Treadstone Tire Recycling. The following restrictions apply: • Registration is required.

• Limit of 20 tires per participant.

• Tires must be removed from metal rim and free of water, mud and other debris.

• Only tires from McHenry County residents and farms will be accepted.

Tires accepted are

limited to passenger vehicle tires, motorcycle tires, small trailer and smaller-sized tires, narrow sprayer tires, utility/farm tractor tires, light truck tires, semi-truck tires, rib tires, compact tractor tires, and hay rack tires. No industrial tires, heavy equipment tires, floatation tires or tires from commercial companies/businesses will be accepted.

Village to try 4-day workweek Twin Lakes Village Hall will keep regular hours

Twin Lakes, Wis., Village Hall employees will soon be experimenting with a different work schedule – one that results in a four-day workweek.

Both past and present employees spoke with Village Administrator Jennifer Frederick requesting the change.

“The Village Hall would remain open to the public for the same schedule,” Frederick explained at Committee of the Whole meeting in September, “and employees would be there on the days they needed to for specific tasks.”

Silent auction aficionados can bid on unique books being sold from the collection.

They include county atlases and history books.

In addition to the museum, the Gannon family 1843 log cabin, the 1895 West Harmony one-room school and the newly updated mobile museum, The James, will be open free all day.

As part of Cider Fest, the Society is hosting its first Apple Bake-off Contest. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with judging following at

10:30 a.m. in the West Harmony School.

The school is located on the museum grounds at 6422 Main St. in Union.

Categories are apple pies, apple cakes and other apple desserts. There is a $2 fee per item entered.

First-, second- and thirdplace contestants in each of the three categories will receive ribbons, with a special prize going to the grand champion.

All baked goods entered should be in disposable containers or dishes marked with the contestant’s name and phone number for pickup after judging. Entries will be divided and repackaged for sale that day. All proceeds benefit the nonprofit historical society.

MCC spring scholarships available The Friends of MCC Foundation has awarded 80 scholarships for the fall 2015 semester totaling more than $84,800.

New and current MCC students have another opportunity to receive scholarships of various types and amounts for the spring 2016 semester.

The spring 2016 scholarships vary in amount and type of award and include those based on need, merit and program of study.

In addition to several general scholarships, several other specialized scholarships are available in: accounting, anthropology, art, athletics, business, construction management, culinary, cultural diversity, education/early childhood education, first generation, FIT fitness instructor training, GED, general, health care, horticulture/plant ccience, humanities, journalism/writing, manufacturing/ engineering, music, nursing, special needs, STEM, veterans and women in college.

The John J. Adelmann Jr. Memorial Scholarship,

awards one scholarship up to $1,000 to a full-time student (12-plus credit hours) majoring in education or to a student who is a child of a United States Armed Forces Veteran.

Also available are two Aptar STEM Scholarships, which awards up to $1,000 to the recipient for the semester awarded. The award will be provided to a full-time student (12-plus credit hours) pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

Concert to feature Chicago Brass Band Players

The 38th Annual Cider Fest runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McHenry County Historical Museum, 6422 Main St. in Union.

In addition to free access to the museum, guests are invited to participate in an Apple Bake-Off, take home a variety of homemade apple treats and experience what it was like to attend classes in a one-room school.

Visitors also may help with a barn-raising starting at 11:30 a.m. and visit with costumed Civil War reenactors from noon to 3 p.m. and listen to the sounds of Charlie B and Friends between 1 and 3 p.m.

Throughout the day there

they may be required to work beyond 40 hours a week and would be available by phone when needed.

On board meeting days, staff required for those meetings would start at 9 a.m. and work until 7 p.m. The staff required to complete payroll and accounts payable would be at the Village Hall on those days.

This schedule would give employees two hours per day that they work outside of public hours to work on projects without interruption.

“I am proposing this change on a trial basis,” Frederick wrote in her report to the board. “We’d like to see how this works.”
