Ambulance funding will get another referendum Officials are running out of options to pay for service By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Both the Village of Antioch and the First Fire Protection District will go to referendum again in April in an attempt to raise additional funds for ambulance service. If this attempt fails, the village will simply enact deeper cuts to services. But the fire protection district has no other source of funding other than taxes. Currently, fire district and the Antioch village fire department operate as one unit, while the funding comes from two sources – village residents though general taxes and the fire district through a specific fire service tax on property tax bills. With the demise of the Antioch Rescue Squad, both governments now depend completely on tax dollars to make sure an ambulance will roll when a call comes in.
One measure taken to attempt to spread current funds further was to close Fire Station 3, the one station owned by the fire district alone. The goal had been to fully staff that station along with Stations 1 and 2. According to Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon, the result of that money-saving effort is that response times are longer and there are fewer personnel available to respond. Some believe that another property tax referendum will be successful, if the public is made aware of how dire the circumstances are. Others believe that any future referendums will lose by greater margins. And if that is the case, what would ambulance and fire service look like in both the district and the village? The fire district owns one

A gathering for gun enthusiasts
Above: Crowds gather looking for bargains in firearms, knives, fishing gear, and more at the Lake County Gun Show held at the Antioch VFW Post 4551, 75 North Ave. on Dec. 28. Lake County Gun Shows sponsored the event, a primary focus of which is gun safety. The hall was packed with vendors, collectors, and residents from both sides of the Illinois-Wisconsin border. At right: Dave Quist hands the winner of the youth raffle, Stephanie Auth, 16, of Gurnee, her prize while mother Marilyn Auth looks on. Auth won a Remington Model 1100 20-gauge, youth shotgun. The Lake County Gun and Sportsman Show will be held on Feb 15 at the Antioch VFW post.

The last journal entry from the day before included, “I’ll kill my targets tonight.” A later entry allegedly included the following account of the incident: “I’m leaving with a saber tooth knife, box cutter and latex gloves … I’m thinking of trailing the blood out to the driveway to implicate a car. I failed; both are alive and both called out ‘he’ and worst of all I left a knife and both gloves there before I accidentally cut myself. “No, there’s more I may have cut myself on the window. Police were called and I wasted more than 30 minutes standing over them and panicked. I’m so (expletive).” In the journal, Kaehne also allegedly wrote that he knew he couldn’t write off the incident as breaking and entering, and he was going to try and get rid of the evidence and “stay inside for as long as I can.” One of the investigators added that, during a search of Kaehne’s room, a diagram of the human body was found – with handwritten arrows pointing to areas such as the throat, neck, spine, heart and kidneys. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 28.

The man later spoke with investigators at the hospital, according to the complaint. He told them he awoke to a man standing over him with a knife pointed at him, and although he was able to punch the suspect, “he just cut me.” Deputies noticed a blood trail in the hallway as well as the knife. They followed footprints from the home that led to Kaehne’s residence. The complaint states Kaehne was read his Miranda Rights and agreed to talk to investigators. Kaehne allegedly told them that his grandparents were psychopaths and his father was a murderer, and that he had picked his target based on the fact it did not look many people lived there. Kaehne also allegedly told investigators he stood over the couple for about 40 minutes while both were sleeping – and that he knew if he had killed one of them, he would have to kill the other and run. When police searched Kaehne’s residence, a brown journal was found. Kaehne allegedly told police that the

the Fremont Public Library District in Mundelein, Grayslake, Lake Villa, North Chicago, Round Lake Area and the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee. The hours vary, but have recently been increased to meet demand. Call (847) 377-4999 for the available times at each site, or to make an appointment. Enroll Lake County! was launched by the Lake County Health Department and local partners in 2013. Its focus is on educating and enrolling local residents in Medicaid and Health Insurance Marketplace plans. While the Marketplace enrollment period will close on Feb. 15, people can apply for Medicaid year-round. Whether an individual is low income, without a job, working part-time, had insurance but lost it, had a life change that changes his or her financial situation, has insurance but wants to see if there is something more affordable, navigators can help. Most uninsured Illinois residents can qualify for financial assistance to help lower their cost for insurance. For questions, contact the Enroll Lake County! office at (847) 377-4999 or the Get Covered Illinois Help Desk toll free from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week at: (866) 311-1119, or visit: EnrollLakeCounty.com.

The ambulance the district owns has a cost of $73,000. The district paid $33,000 to purchase a used vehicle and for painting and mechanical updates. The Foreign Fire Fund paid $25,000 for supplies and equipment and the Antioch Firefighters Association paid $15,000 for a defibrillator and cots. If the April referendum doesn’t pass in the fire district, basic and advanced life support may come from the fire truck that is dispatched. The personnel and the truck would then need to stay with the patient until a private ambulance service responds. That could take up to 30 minutes. “By law,” Nixon said, “they have to stay. So if there is a fire somewhere in the district, the response time would be longer.” “If the fire district does not provide ambulance ser-

The district is using financial reserves to pay for the services this fiscal year. That option will not be available in the future, as the funds will be depleted. His mother, Julia Krupa Strzelecki, on the GoFundMe page she created, said the hospital planned to keep him paralyzed for much of this week prior to his death. He was receiving medication to reduce swelling of his brain and an antibiotic to fight pneumonia, the post said. According to police reports, on Jan. 12, at about 9:20 p.m., the Glendale Police Department and the North Shore Fire Department responded to the Bayshore Town Center Rotunda to investigate a fall from the upper level of the mall. They found Strzelecki, who was unconscious at the base of a stairwell in the rotunda. Police interviewed approximately 20 witnesses, and determined it to be an accident. According to various news reports, one witness said he saw Strzelecki fall backwards off the railing. Another said he watched as Strzelecki attempted to slide down the railing of the stairwell and then saw him falling backwards over the railing.

Widow asks for help to pay rent after car repairs Dear W.C., My husband passed away a year ago. I still am so devastated. We had been married for 42 years. We were high school sweethearts and got married right after I graduated high school. My husband went on to college and I supported us with my job. Our son was born a few years after we were married and he had many problems during the birth. He has special needs that never allowed him to marry or hold a job. It took many years for me to teach him how to live on his own, with some help from me and his roommate. I never had any other children or a job as I devoted myself completely to helping my son learn. My son always had an overwhelming desire to live independently, as he saw many others do. My husband was such a good father and when he was not working he spent all his free time with our son. Our son has really struggled to understand why his father is no longer here. When I tell him about his father’s heart attack he just does not understand. It has taken a real toll on both of us. My husband was my best friend and the breadwinner in our family. We not only did everything together he also took care of all the bills and repairs. Since my husband’s death I have not been able to afford any car repairs. Since my son does not drive due to his disabilities I take him to all his doctor’s appointments and for food. My car broke down last month and it took my whole Social Security check to get it repaired. I had no choice, as that car is our only means of transportation. Now I am unable to pay my utilities or lot rent. I am so afraid I will not be able to get through this winter and still be there for our son

strength in lifting him in and out of his wheelchair and with bathing. In exchange the physically disabled roommate managed all the bill paying and other things that might require more skills than her son had acquired. The arrangement was perfect for both men and they had managed to live together for the past five years. I told her how we would be helping to remove the stress of paying her overdue bills and for her much needed car repairs. I went over her car and saw it needed some additional work she had not been able to afford. I set her car up for an appointment for repairs and evaluation. After we finished going over her bills I asked if I could meet her son and his roommate. The mother said she would love for me to meet both men. I set up a time to meet her at their apartment the next day. She asked me to not mention the reason I was there, to help them financially. The following day I met the mother at the door of her son’s apartment. As I walked in the son was helping his handicapped roommate into
his chair with a lift. The son was happy to show me all the steps he took to do this safely. The two men spoke amicably and it was easy to see they shared a special bond from the years of living together and helping each other. The son introduced his handicapped friend by saying, “This is my best friend. We help each other.” We talked about how they assisted each other and how interesting it was to see how they helped each other. Both men agreed they could never live alone. They both hugged the mother and said, “And Mom helps us too.” I saw the mother’s face light up and noticed the tears in her eyes when they said this. Then the son said, “Dad used to help us too but not anymore. Mom says he’s in heaven. I don’t know why he can’t come visit me anymore.” The handicapped roommate said, “You know Dad would be here if he could. Just like Mom said he is in heaven now.” I could see the mother was trying to remain strong for her son and agreed with the roommate. I also found out the roommate did not have any family that cared for him
and this woman was like a mother to him as well. After our help with bringing the mother’s lot rent and utilities up to date and the additional car repairs needed to make her car safe she was able to get by on her own once again. I began to see joy return her face as she was once again involved in caring for her “two sons.” God bless everyone, W.C./Sal

Credit card reject It was a simple trip to the grocery store – something I could probably do in my sleep. Pick up a few items, hit the checkout line and bag up the goods. I’d even remembered my coupons. It was a good day. I didn’t even bring my purse because I have a new trendy phone case that has a nearly invisible compartment to hold a driver’s license and one credit card. I snapped open the case, feeling smart and sleek and #hipster and handed the checkout lady my plastic. I didn’t give it a second thought. I had no idea my day was about to change. She swiped the card through the swipey machine. Twice. I hardly noticed because I was thinking about the meatballs I planned to make for supper using extra jumbo pack of ground beef that was on sale and in my cart. The lady with my card frowned and picked up her phone to call someone over to the register. I figured the machine was jammed or something. A second clerk came and stood by the lady with my card. Now, Kehl said, it’s time to bring the concept to the community. “I want to be their personal trainer at home, take this one person at a time, and help them start doing a little self maintenance that everybody is entitled to and should be working on,” he said. He said he’s working on creating seminars to help people work exercise and fitness tips into their everyday life. “If you have the right mindset it’s not that hard,” he said. “Start slow and take it one day at a time. Maybe the first day you don’t get home from working in the office all day and sitting at desk, to driving home in your car and plopping down on the couch. “That first day, instead of sitting down, even if the first thing you do is turn the TV on, make the second thing standing for a full minute. The next day, make it 2 minutes. On the third day, try standing on one leg for those 2 minutes, it will help improve your balance.” Kehl said the most important thing is to build on the new activity every day to make it a habit. “Start small and work into a habit and most importantly, acknowledge that you’re doing something that you need to do. Give yourself a reward because as you go this way with something positive, you’re moving away from the negative.”
CONTRIBUTOR
The Fitness Mission is an initiative to help people to understand that they have a right and an obligation to themselves and their loved ones to perform the selfmaintenance that allows them to fully express themselves as human beings. Most people pay much more attention to maintaining their car than their own physical and mental condition. We believe that the big thing is to get people to believe that big change is possible … that they are not just the product of their genes and their environment. Rather, they really do have the freedom to decide if they are worth at least a little tune-up; perhaps even a major overhaul. We believe that if they have the latest and best information, with a little confidence they will be able to make better decisions. We understand the frustration to the point of despair that some feel after years of suffering through overpromised diets and exercise regimes that result in no meaningful change. We have seen where simple changes in perspective and attitude make the awful sense of defeated resignation impossible. With solid, practical information and the right attitude dramatic change is not only possible, it is guaranteed. It really should not be as hard as many people have had to suffer in the past.

Police chase, catch thief with asthma STAFF WRITER
An Illinois man ran from Delavan police after he was allegedly spotted trying to steal a computer from Walmart, and was tackled by an off-duty police officer along Highway 50 after reaching into his waistband for his inhaler. Anthony L. Evans, 35, of Freeport, Ill., was charged in Walworth County Circuit Court with felony bail jumping, three counts of retail theft, criminal damage to property and two counts of disorderly conduct after the Jan. 13 incident. Delavan police were called to Walmart at about 9:15 a.m. Jan. 13 for a report of a man, later identified as Evans, and a woman who were suspected in previous thefts from Walmart and were seen that day trying to remove a security device from a secured computer, according to police. As the officer approached Walmart, Evans and the woman were quickly exiting the grocery entrance of Walmart, and Evans fled when the officer yelled,
“Police, stop!” according to the police report. Evans initially ran east toward East Geneva Street, turned and went west toward GameStop, and then crossed to the south side of East Geneva Street and ran toward Interstate 43, according to the report. Several vehicles had to slow down or stop to avoid hitting Evans as he ran across Highway 50. The officer, who was chasing Evans on foot, got into a Mercy Hospital emergency vehicle that was among the cars that had to slow to avoid Evans, according to the report. The Mercy vehicle activated its lights and pursued Evans. At the same time, an off-duty Delavan police officer had heard the call over the police radio regarding the foot pursuit and went to the area where he approached Evans, who was, at that point, walking along Highway 50, according to the report. Evans began to run when the officer, who was not in uniform, got closer to him. The officer yelled, “Stop, police!” and began to chase Evans.
The Mercy emergency vehicle and another squad car with its lights activated arrived as the off-duty officer was chasing Evans. The officer saw Evans make a quick movement to his waistband with his right hand, and, at that point, tackled Evans to the ground, according to the report. The officer riding in the Mercy emergency vehicle also saw Evans reach for his waistband and drew his service weapon and pointed it at Evans before the off-duty officer tackled Evans, according to police. At that point, the officer returned his gun to its holster and placed Evans in handcuffs. Police said Evans was breathing heavy and told the officer he had asthma and was reaching for his inhaler. Police then called for an ambulance, which took Evans to Mercy Walworth Hospital and Medical Center for medical clearance before he was taken to the Walworth County Jail. Evans is expected to appear in court Friday on the four felony and three misdemeanor offenses.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends 30 minutes of physical activity a day for adults, 60 minutes for children, at least five days a week. Sound daunting? It’s much easier than it sounds. There are plenty of everyday ways to get moving. Being active doesn’t require joining a gym. Working exercise into daily activities will help make it a habit. There are many health benefits to being active for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, but consulting a physician before starting a new activity program is recommended. Start slowly and build up. Do what you can; some physical activity is better than none. Try adding these extra steps to your day: 1. Instead of calling friends, take a walk together to catch up; 2. Walk the dog with the whole family; 3. Park the car as far away as possible; 4. Replace a coffee break with an outdoor walk — or take the coffee with; 5. Choose the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator; 6. Walk up and down the field while the kids play sports; 7. Plant and care for a vegetable garden (then cook the vegetables for healthy meals); 8. Shovel snow, rake leaves, or do yard work; 9. Start the day with a morning stretch; 10. Keep a list of quick activities, like squats or stretches, near the remote to be active during commercial breaks. Source: fitness.gov.

Owls soar in exhibit at Glacial Park By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT
Owl lovers will enjoy a visit to the Only Owls Travelling Art Exhibit currently showing at the Lost Valley Visitor Center at Glacial Park in Ringwood, Ill. This exhibit contains 40 pieces of artwork celebrating owls. The artists have rendered owl images in pencil, ink, charcoal, woodcuts and watercolors. These pieces are part of the collection of the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau. Founded in 1973, the museum strives to provide audiences with quality art experiences and to enhance lives through art. In addition, the McHenry County Conservation District is blending the collection with owl facts and artifacts for a display that satisfies the desire to learn with an appreciation of art. So far this year, the district has hosted programs such as “Owls of McHenry County” and an “Owl Prowl” to meet and observe live owls. Winter is an excellent time to observe owls as most of them do not migrate. With long, dark nights, winter is
the beginning of owl breeding and nesting season. Without leaves, trees do not hide the owls as well as in other seasons so they are easier to spot. Owls have inspired and/ or terrified people for centuries. Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, and Minerva, Roman goddess of wisdom, both kept a wise owl nearby to advise them. Other cultures considered the owl a symbol of doom or evil. Harry Potter fans remember his owl, Hedwig, with great fondness. Even Winnie the Pooh has wise, old Owl as a friend. Here are some fun facts about owls: • There are more than 200 species of owls in the world. Only 19 species are found in North America. • Antarctica is the only continent without owls. • An owl has three eyelids: one for blinking, one for keeping the eye clean and healthy and one for sleeping. • An owl has four toes – two facing forward and two facing backward, giving the owl a very strong, powerful grip. • The flattened facial disc of an owl helps funnel sounds
to its ears and can magnify sounds up to 10 times. • A group of owls is called a parliament. • Owls have 14 vertebrae in their necks and can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees. Other bird species only have seven vertebrae in their necks. • An owl has specialized feathers which muffle sound to allow the owl to fly silently. * An owl’s feathers make excellent camouflage to help them blend into their surroundings. • The Elf Owl is the only species of owl to add fruit and seeds to its diet of meat. • A barn owl can eat up to 1,000 mice each year and many farmers appreciate their help in controlling rodent populations. • Owls love to eat hedgehogs. They also can eat fish and larger game such as fawns, young wolves, large herons and warthogs. For information on the Only Owls Travelling Art Exhibit or Glacial Park, please visit MCCDistrict. org or the Facebook page at McHenry County Conservation District.

Large animal rescue training offered A Nov. 22, 2014, barn fire at Valley View Acres in Woodstock, which claimed the lives of 32 horses, highlighted the need to better train emergency responders in the rescue of large animals. Over 20 departments from McHenry, Lake and Kane counties responded to this fire. “We could still smell the smoke Monday morning at McHenry County College, two-and-a-half miles away,” said Henry Gruba, MCC Fire Science department chairman. “We are looking forward to bringing this specialized training to McHenry and surrounding
counties. It is another skill in the fire service toolbox, like rope rescue, swift water or hazardous materials training. We may not use it every day, but when we need it, the knowledge and techniques are critical and save lives.” Now, McHenry County College’s Fire Science department, in cooperation with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute, is offering free large animal rescue awareness training from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the college, 8900 Highway 14, Crystal Lake. This class will be presented by Dr. Deke Carls of the Institute. As both a firefighter and large animal veteri-
narian, Carls brings varied perspective to his presentation. With more than five million animals traveling across Illinois each year, the increased likelihood of the need for large animal rescue on Illinois’ roadways led to the realization that while first responders are trained to extricate and rescue humans, they typically have not received training on the heavy rescue of large animals from various entrapment situations, including overturned trailers, mud, ice, and barn fires. “We recognized the need to include this type of training for first responders in Illinois, and took the time to
develop the curriculum with the assistance of Dr. Rebecca Gimenez of Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue in Gray, Georgia,” said Royal Mortenson, director of the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. Attendees will learn how to evaluate and effectively handle large animals in emergency situations, as well as how to do it without injury of the animal or themselves. The market value of livestock from McHenry County exceeds $30 million, and the county has been documented as having the highest concentration of horses per capita in the state.
Overall, the Illinois horse industry produces goods and services valued at over $1.2 billion annually, and directly provides 15,900 full-time equivalent jobs. Spending by suppliers and employees (in Illinois and other states) generates additional jobs in Illinois for a total employment impact of 49,400. “Large animals are not just pets or hobbies. The animals inside a trailer or barn can represent someone’s entire livelihood,” Gruba said. “Over 70 people attended this training last April from Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. Firefighters, law enforcement, animal control, equine humane investiga-

Investigators also allege that Rygiel reproduced several videos containing child pornography. Rygiel was charged with five counts of reproducing child pornography, each a Class X felony. Lake County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Karrol L. Williams, 45, of the 37000 block of N. Columbus Dr., Lake Villa, on Friday and charged her with stealing from the non-profit organization she worked for. When Kenosha was the mini Motorcity City was home to automakers from 1900 to 1988
CORRESPONDENT
While Detroit has been called the automobile capitol of the country, it is not the only city well known for the production and development of automobiles. Beginning in 1901 automobile production began in Kenosha and continued until 1988. Thomas B. Jeffrey was originally a bicycle manufacturer in Chicago. In 1897 his bicycles, called the Rambler, were very popular, but Jeffrey became interested in the automobile and developed his first prototype. His designs received positive acclaim at the 1899 Chicago International Exhibition and Tournament and later at the first National Automobile Show held in New York City, leaving him ready to enter the automobile business. Jeffrey moved to Kenosha in 1900 where he purchased the old Sterling Bicycle Co. factory at the lakefront and set up his production – a move that would turn Kenosha into one of the leading automobile manufacturing centers. By 1902 production was in high gear with Jeffrey mass-producing automobiles. He named his automobile the Rambler just as he had named his bicycles. The Rambler became the first automobile to incorporate a steering wheel instead of the tiller-controlled steering mechanism of the day. With 1,500 automobiles
being produced in this first year, the Jeffrey Company was the second largest automobile manufacturer at the time with only Oldsmobile producing more. The Rambler continued to dominate the market until 1914 when Thomas B. Jeffrey’s son, Charles, who replaced his father as head of the company following Thomas Jeffrey’s death in 1910, changed the name of the auto. Thomas renamed the popular automobile the Jeffrey to honor his father. The name did not last long due to the purchase of the company by Charles Nash in 1916. By 1917 the company name became Nash Motor Company dropped the Jeffrey name and began to manufacture Nash autos. Among the lines of Nash automobiles was the return of the popular Rambler, this time as a smaller car that could be produced inexpensively to attract buyers in the post-World War II era. By 1937 the company merged with Kelvinator, an appliance maker and George W. Mason succeeded Nash as by the Chairman of the new Nash-Kelvinator Company. The start of the Korean War brought shortages in the availability of steel and other raw materials needed for the continued production of automobiles. Changes included increased production of compact cars and different designs to save on steel use. Two-door autos became more popular as was the addition of a convertible top
another way to save on steel use. With the end of the Korean War, the popular Rambler line increased with the introduction of several new models. First were a station wagon and a two-door hardtop, which was unofficially known as “the Country Club.” The line continued to be expanded in 1954 with the addition of a four-door sedan and a new station wagon called the Cross Country, which had been built on a stretched wheelbase, the perfect auto for that cross country family vacation. That year also brought another first for automobiles. A combination heating and air conditioning unit could be added on to any Rambler or could be installed at the factory for $395. The company underwent changes again in 1954 when Nash-Kelvinator merged with Detroit based Hudson Company. The companies combined into The American Motors Corporation and Hudson production was moved to Kenosha. In the following years Ramblers were marketed under both the Nash and Hudson label at least through 1957. After 1957 all of AMC’s automobiles were marketed as Ramblers except for the imported Metropolitan, which was marketed in the United States from 1958-1962. In the 1960s, George Romney, who later left the company to become Governor of Michigan, made many

mid-sized automobiles at the Kenosha plant. While Ramblers continued to be assembled in countries that included Australia, Mexico, and Argentina, their production in Kenosha came to an end. The end of the Kenosha-built Rambler occurred on June 30, 1969. It was the last of over 4.2 million cars to carry the Rambler name produced in the Kenosha plants. The AMC Lakefront plant, which was in operation from 1900-1988, was demolished in 1990, under the watchful eyes of 10,000 local residents officially ending the Nash and Rambler days of Kenosha.

Rambler name. According to accounts from the time, Abernathy made a persuasive argument to the board of AMC that the name Rambler had served its course of time and had become stodgy and was associated with compact cars. He anticipated marketing under AMC rather than Rambler. In later years a partnership developed with Renault, the French automaker, to manufacture several of their models at the Kenosha plant, including the popular Alliance. The Alliance won the 1983 Car of the Year award. Renault later sold its share of the company to Chrysler with the plan to produce its

positive marketing decisions to unify the Rambler brand. He began to modify design so more common parts and a common wheelbase and body panels were shared by the models. Motor Trend awarded the Rambler the car of the year award for the Rambler line in 1963. Roy Abernathy took over after Romney left for Michigan and changed the direction of the company in moves that were roundly panned. Abernathy attempted to compete with the big three automakers in Detroit by increasing the number of models available and marketing them apart from the

Donahue, 38, and Michael G. Donahue, 46, pleaded not guilty Dec. 12 to charges that stem from allegations that Carrie they locked Donahue Michael Donahue’s son in a room for 12 hours at a time, didn’t let him eat and made him eat his own feces. Both are charged with causing mental harm to a child, false imprisonment, physical abuse of a child and child neglect. Carrie Donahue is also charged with disorderly conduct. A status conference is scheduled in the case for Feb. 19. According to the criminal complaint, Michael Donahue’s father reported to Child Protective Services that the Michael and Carrie Donahue would lock the boy in his bedroom for 12 hours at a time

The boy and family members reported the boy had problems with urination and defecation, needed to wear Pull-ups, kept his fingers in his mouth until his mouth bled, didn’t eat or shower, had urine-soaked socks and shoes, sat in a cold, dark room at a bar and stood for long periods of time, according to the criminal complaint. The boy was admitted to Rogers Memorial Hospital in June 2013, and a doctor reported the boy did not need diapers while at the hospital but his behaviors resumed after he was disMichael charged and Donahue sent home, according to the complaint. narian, Carls brings varied perspective to his presentation. “We recognized the need to include this type of training for first responders in Illinois, and took the time to develop the curriculum with the assistance of Dr.

A Nov. “We are looking forward to bringing this specialized training to McHenry and surrounding counties.

The girl also told the Tree House interviewer that her brother has a lock on his door that keeps him in. On Dec. 17, 2013, the boy told the Tree House interviewer that the last time he had
eaten was four days earlier. The night before, he said, he was required to stand next to the dinner table, and when everyone was eating in front of him, he got a plate, and Carrie Donahue dumped his plate in the sink and would not let him eat because he snuck food, according to the complaint. A counselor at Lake Geneva Middle School, where the boy was enrolled from Sept. 13 to Nov. 27, 2013, also reported concerns to the county Department of Health and Human Services. The counselor said the
boy came to school disheveled, wearing dirty clothes and sometimes urine-soaked clothes and asking for food in the morning because he was hungry, according to the complaint. The boy told social workers that on one occasion in October, he pooped in his pants, and Carrie Donahue made him eat it, according to the complaint. The boy’s sister said when Michael Donahue came home, he hit the boy in the head for eating poop, according to the complaint.
