Health officials warn of possible measles exposure

Renovated theater reopens Community rallied ‘round historic venue By Jude Kaider

CORRESPONDENT

Despite the single-digit temperatures and a bone-chilling wind, a crowd of village officials and residents gathered at the Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., to watch the re-lighting of the theatre’s new marquee on Thursday. Theatre employees passed out bags of popcorn to those shivering souls in attendance and this was followed by a countdown ending with the lighting of the theatre’s new beacon. The event marked the end of a major renovation project and the beginning of a new chapter in the landmark’s nearly century-old life. The structure, originally named the Majestic Theatre, opened in 1919 in a post-World War I, pre-prohibition, Black Sox-scandaled America. Initially, the venue featured live entertainment. Its renaming and transmutation into a movie theater took place five years later. In recent years, the building found itself sorely in need of both interior and exterior updating and repair, including electrical and sprinkler systems. The theatre also faced pressure from the ever-influential Digital Age. Up until its closure, movies were shown using a complex film projection system. Movie distributors now require theatres to have digital, rather than film, projectors. Unless action was taken, Antioch was in danger of losing another landmark. A local real estate developer, Tim Downey, decided to take that action. Downey was the prime mover behind the renovation. He initiated a

Antioch real estate developer Tim Downey gives the signal to turn on the new marquee of the remodeled Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., on Thursday. Downey was the driving force behind the project to renovate and save the Antioch landmark. Corporate and individual contributions, along with a loan from the village made successful completion of the project possible. Single-digit temperatures did not deter the village officials, theatre staff, and members of the public who were on hand to watch the historic moment.

Local residents who may have been at the Menards store in Long Grove are warned to be aware of possible exposure to the measles virus. While there are no current cases of measles in Lake County, the County Health Department and Community Health Center issued the alert last week. People who visited or worked at the Menards store, 2700 W. Lake Cook Road in Long Grove, on Sunday, Feb. 15, between 7:55 a.m. and 3:20 p.m., may have been exposed. An individual who has tested positive for measles was at the store at that date and time and could have been contagious. The Menards store is cooperating with the Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health. Customers and employees may visit their health care provider, or individuals 14 years of age or older may be vaccinated at their local pharmacy. Potentially exposed pregnant women should contact their obstetrician/gynecologist. With some exceptions, persons born before 1957 are considered immune to measles and do not need vaccination. As of last week there were 15 confirmed cases of measles in Illinois. All the current Illinois cases are in Cook County. Nationwide, more than 150 cases of measles have been confirmed in numerous states. The Health Department is reminding residents that the best way to protect against measles is to get the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine.

Subaru makes move into sports car with BRZ By Barbara & Bill Schaffer AUTO DIGEST

First introduced in 2013, the BRZ takes Subaru to a new relatively unpopulated area of the automotive business, the entry-level end of the purist-performance sport car segment. After two successful years on the market, the 2015 BRZ remains relatively unchanged from the original except for some additions to the Infotainment system. With its rear-wheel drive configuration, the BRZ is a departure for Subaru which converted their entire lineup to all-wheel drive cars in 1996. It’s also a new type of car for Subaru, a sports car. Powered by a 200-hp version of Subaru’s famous Boxer engine that has horizontally opposed cylinders instead of the conventional in-line vertical configuration used by most four cylinder engines. With this engine mounted low in the chassis, it keeps the vehicle’s center of gravity lower for better balance and handling. Subaru engineers have also taken

great pains to keep the vehicle weight to a low 2,762 pounds which also contributes to the car’s excellent handling characteristics. The four-cylinder 2.0-liter Boxer engine has a dual overhead cam with a unique direct injection and port injection technology that enables the engine to run at a very high 12.5:1 compression ratio to achieve a maximum efficiency, especially in light and medium load conditions. The engine uses a Dual Active Valve Control System to produce a broad range of torque across a broad curve to give it better response in everyday driving. The high 7,400 rpm red line and torque curve allows the driver a wide range of power. The standard six-speed manual transmission is designed with close ratios between the first five speeds to help maintain the revs for better control in corners. The sixth gear is an overdrive for better cruising efficiency. The clutch has a light smooth feel and the shifter is smooth and precise without be-

ing notchy. An available six speed automatic transmission ($1,100) with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters maintains the sports car feel and can be adjusted from a console mounted switch for firmer automatic shifts. The driver can also switch the shifter to a manual mode with direct control using the shifter or the paddle shifters. The BRZ is equipped with a Torsen® limited-slip differential which helps the inside wheel maintain traction during cornering. For track driving the Vehicle Stability Control has five different settings allowing the driver to select a level of control or to completely switch the system off for track driving. The manual transmission cars have an EPA fuel economy rating of 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. The automatic does even better with a 25/34/28 mpg rating. Our manual transmission test car averaged 24.7 mpg in mixed enthusiastic driving. Underpinning the BRZ is

a sophisticated four-wheel independent suspension using struts and coil springs. The electric assist power steering has a quick 13:1 ratio for quick response and it has a tight 35.4foot turning radius which helps give it an even more agile feel. The low coupe has a sweptback roofline sweeping back to a body-colored trunk spoiler, strong fender arches on all wheels and the classic sports car long hood, with short overhangs front and rear. It uses high intensity discharge headlights and has a large hexagonal grille area. The cargo area is a tight 6.9 cubic feet of space, but that it can be expanded by folding down the rear seat backs, and then there is room for a couple of sets of golf clubs. The interior has a simple functional design with large buttons, and well placed controls. The navigation system uses a 6.1-inch touch screen mounted high in the center stack high making it easy to read without having to look too far away from the road.

SUBMITTED PHOTO Hi-Liter

After first introducing the BRZ in 2013, Subaru has pushed into the sports-car market with the vehicle.

The large center mounted tachometer has a digital speedometer readout in its face making it easier to see speed and RPMs instantly. We also appreciate the large dead pedal for the driver’s left foot. The seats are highly bolstered for extra support during more spirited driving or at the track. Rear seats are only for emergencies or smaller children. They will hold two properly installed forward facing child seats. The 2015 Subaru BRZ is available in two well-equipped models, the Premium model

and Limited. The Premium is priced at $26,490, with the destination charge, and includes a sports-tuned suspension with front strut brace and TORSEN limited-slip differential. On the inside the Premium includes the infotainment system with navigation, voice controls, HD Radio, Bluetooth, Sirius XM satellite radio and many other entertainment features. The Limited model is priced at $28,490 and adds to the Premium features Alcantara® and leather trimmed upholstery, a rear spoiler and keyless entry/start.

Wife struggles with bills and husband’s condition

Dear W.C., You so kindly helped our family years ago when you provided us with a handicap-accessible van when my husband first began to lose his ability to walk. My husband has a progressive condition that continues to worsen with each passing year. He used to be an active, hard-working man but now all he can do is move one hand slightly and, thank God, breathe on his own. It is the hardest thing to go through, watching the love of your life lose his ability to do anything on his own. The van The Time Is Now to Help gave us years ago is in need of some repairs and it has seriously affected our ability to get to doctor’s appointments. I work part-time when my teenage son is home. It isn’t much but helps to pay for gas and some utilities. That is all I can do since my husband needs someone with him at all times. Could you please help us with our transportation needs once again?

By

SAL DIMICELI Columnist

me her teenage son had just gotten a job and was riding his bike to work on weekends and taking the school bus during the week. Going forward he was sharing his small paycheck with his parents to help with food. The wife told me how cold it was when her son rode his bike home at night. I asked if he had a winter coat, gloves and a hat. She looked ashamed as she told me he did not. The wife said, “He has grown so much this year and does not fit in any of his clothing from last winter.” We provided them with gift cards to do some much-needed shopping for winter gear and clothing for the whole family. Just as we were finishing going over their assistance, the son came rushing through the door. I noted his red face and ears and how he had his sweatshirt sleeves pulled down over his hands. I noticed how much he had grown and matured in the years since I had last seen him as a boy. He pulled his sleeves up off his hands and came over to shake my hand. I shook his cold hands. He then immediately went to his father and leaned over to give him a hug. I saw his father smile and attempt to hug back with his one good arm. I admit, it was very hard to watch his struggle to maintain control of his body. I knew this must be hard for the whole family if you compared his mobility to what he had been able to do just a few short years ago. I did not hear any complaints or see any self-pity. This family was doing all they could to help the father and remain strong. After the repairs to the van and some additional help with rent to lighten their financial strain, the family is again able to get to doctor’s appointments and have had their stress of poverty relieved, thanks to all of you. God bless you for caring

Single-digit temperatures did not dissuade movie fans who attended the relighting ceremony of the marquee at the newly remodeled Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., on Thursday. Kickstarter and corporate funding, along with a loan from the village, made the remodel possible. The theatre reopened to the public on Friday with a showing of “Kingsman, The Secret Service. The official grand reopening of the Antioch landmark will take place on April 3.

Kickstarter fundraising campaign, which had a goal of collecting $65,000 to purchase the new digital projection equipment. The effort received stellar support and ended raising more than $83,000, with contributors as far away as the Netherlands. Additionally, corporate sponsors such as Raymond Chevrolet, Great Lakes Credit Union, the Antioch Chamber of Commerce, Something Sweet Confectionery, along with an anonymous benefactor, pledged assistance totaling $150,000. The Village of Antioch approved a $200,000 loan to be repaid by a movie ticket tax. Downey himself invested an additional $300,000 in the project.

Granite sidewalk stars and other personalized promotions were also sold. As movie distributors require theatres to show films for a two- to four-week period, and as attendance usually drops off later in a movie’s run, a 29-seat boutique theatre was built next door to the main theatre. This was done to improve the turnaround time of feature films. It will allow for a given film for which attendance has dropped off to be moved to the smaller theatre, fulfilling the commitment to the distributor, while allowing new movies to be shown in the main theatre. The smaller theatre will also allow for the showing of lesser-known films with smaller target

audiences. In addition to the new digital projection and sound systems, other changes to the theatre include new screens, drapery, seating, the classic marquee, a redesigned facade, a renovated lobby, and other improvements not readily visible to aficionados of the silver screen. Balcony seating, a hallmark of the original theatre, remains intact. With the renovations complete, the theatre, which had been closed since May 16, reopened to the public on Friday. Future trivia buffs can note that the feature film played at the reopening was “Kingsman, The Secret Service. The theatre’s redcarpet grand reopening event is scheduled for April 3.

“The measles vaccine is safe, effective and the best protection against this disease, said Tony Beltran, the Health Department’s Executive Director. “Before the U.S. measles vaccination program started in 1963, about 3 to 4 million people in the U.S. got measles each year, 400 to 500 of them died and 48,000 were hospitalized. A person who was potentially exposed and is experiencing symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes with or without a rash, should call their health care provider. These individuals should notify their physician or emergency department be-

fore seeking care by calling ahead, so that staff is able to take appropriate precautions to prevent others from being infected. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease. The disease can cause severe health complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis and death. Measles is transmitted by contact with an infected person through coughing or sneezing and can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Infected people are contagious four days prior to their rash developing and until four days after. Residents should be aware

A penny saved and all that jazz Variety is the spice of life. Blood is thicker than water. Don’t let the cat out of the bag. Idioms. Proverbs. Expressive phrases that mean something other than their words might initially indicate. Make no bones about it; we’re all in the same boat. We’ve heard and spoken a few of these gems without giving it a second thought. You can probably think of a few off the top of your head because they’re a dime a dozen. If you read this column regularly, you know I like to play with words as much as a toddler likes to play with his Cheerios. Today, we play with wellworn phrases and idioms. Is there a method to my madness? Probably not, but I hope we’re having as much fun as a barrel of monkeys. Let’s get the ball rolling: A penny saved might buy you a thought or two. Don’t count your

chickens before they hatch, because at that point you’d be counting eggs. A bird in hand might leave your with a palmful of poop. Every cloud has a silver lining and the potential to rain on your parade. If actions speak louder than words, what about when you have laryngitis? A picture can’t paint a thousand words because a picture can’t paint, or spell, for that matter. An artist paints a thousand words and thereby deserves due credit. Someone pulling your leg is preferable to you pulling their finger. Hit the nail on the head – as long as you’re talking about the nail’s head and

not mine. Better that than my thumb. The early bird is forced to eat worms. It takes two to tango, three’s a crowd and one to fly solo, but who’s counting? A leopard can’t change his spots. Then again, why would he want to? They are part of his whole camouflage thing. Great minds think alike, unless they belong to different political parties. It’s a piece of cake – unless it’s a piece of pie. I hate when I’m under the weather, especially if it’s raining cats and dogs. It’s a small world unless you are an ant. Drastic times call for drastic measures and I can never find my ruler when I need it. Tongue in cheek – where else would it be? They’re a dime a dozen for people who can’t count up to 12. Hold your horses, they

may have a gift for you in their mouth. A house divided against itself better not be made of cards. Especially if you aren’t playing with a full deck. To make a long story short, these pearls of wisdom weave their way through our language like a NASCAR driver during rush hour. But you know what they say, all good things must come to an end. I’d like to tell you I’ve saved the best for last, but that would be a figure of speech, not to mention a little white lie. Oh, enough already. I think it’s about time for the overweight woman to belt out a tune. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. She welcomes having readers follow her column on the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Theatre Arts Department will present a steampunk version of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” directed by American Players Theatre actor Matt Schwader. In a steampunk world, where a duke can win the heart of his enemy by war and wooing, where a parent can threaten a child with death for disobedience, where fairies rule the seasons, and reverie and reality are interchangeable, the wildest dreams of lunatics, lovers, and poets all come true. Shakespeare’s magical forest is filled with some of the most memorable characters of all time. Performances are set for the next two weekends at

the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Art & Humanities Main Stage Theater on the UW-Parkside campus. Shows are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., March 12 at 7:30 p.m., March 13 at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and March 14 at 7:30 p.m. The show is 2 hours, 20 minutes long and features one 10-minute intermission. General admission tickets are $18, or $14 for seniors, faculty and staff, or $10 for students. Tickets can be ordered in advance by calling the box office at (262) 595-2564 or by emailing a request to boxoffice@uwp.edu. Discounts tickets for groups of 20 or more are available.

Museum hosts Smithsonian earth exhibit The Earth From Space exhibit is on display at the Kenosha Public Museum now through June 21. The display features satellite images and artifacts that reveal our ever-changing planet. The 20 images feature the planet from the swirling arms of a massive hurricane and the grid-like pattern of Kansas farmland to the triangular shadows cast by the Great Pyramids and the sinuous channels entering the Arctic Ocean. Earth from Space illustrates how satellite imagery is gathered and used to expand mankind’s understanding of life on earth. It also explores

the remote-sensing technology used to gather the images and describes the individual satellites whose images are on display. The display is courtesy of the United States Geological Survey and the Smithsonian Institution. The Kenosha Public Museum is a natural sciences and fine and decorative arts museum located along the Lake Michigan shore. Two locations, the Dinosaur Discovery Museum and the Civil War Museum, are in close proximity to the main museum campus. Free parking is available in a lot on the lakeshore.

The Belfry Theatre, built in 1888 as a Mormon church, will be restored to use as an active theater. The church portion with the belfry and red door will contain a lobby, restrooms and ticketing and concession areas. The brown Lindal cedar portion on the right, added on in 1967, will be a 250-seat theater and the 12-bedroom actor’s house (below, left) will be renovated. Photos by

The backstory The theater has been vacant since the late 1990s when Eddie Cash left the venue after performing his music show there for seven or eight years, Connors said. The original building – the white church portion with the belfry and red door – was built in 1888 as a place of worship for Mormon farmers in the area, Connors said. It was the only Mormon church in

rganizers are nearly a third of the way to their goal of raising $1.8 million to restore the Belfry Theatre to active use. Transformative Arts – “a group of local Christians who would like to see great professional Broadway music” return to the Town of Delavan venue – bought the vacant building in November 2013, said Anne Connors, of Williams Bay, development director for the group. The group aims to raise $1.8 million to refurbish the 250-seat theater and 12-bedroom “actor’s house” next to it on Highway 67 at Bailey Road south of Highway 50 across from Mercy Walworth Hospital and Medical Center.

the state with members who belonged to the Iowa Saints and abhorred the Brighamite and Strangite doctrines, according to the building’s history at belfrymusictheatre.com. The church was abandoned in the 1920s when the Mormons retreated to Utah after a skirmish in Illinois, Connors said. In 1932, the church was turned into the first summer stock theater – a theater that presents stage productions in the summer – in

Wisconsin. The theater put on four or five shows in a summer using all the same actors, Connors said. In the 1950s, the “actor’s house” was moved from the Crane Farm – in the area where Geneva National is now – and placed next to the church. The building was used to house migrant farm workers who picked from the orchards on the Crane Farm, according to the online history. In 1967, a Lindal cedar addition – the brown part of the building

that extends toward Bailey Road – was built onto the church, Connors said. The same year, Highway 50 was widened, and the owners of the theater had to move the building back away from the road, she said. That cost and the cost of the addition – $25,000 at the time – forced the theater out of business, and it closed from 1969 to 1976. Connors said seven large boxes of photos and historical artifacts were inside the building when

Transformative Arts purchased it, and the group will sort and preserve the items.

The cast Productions at the theater when they began in 1932 were delivered by the Belfry Players – a group of amateur actors, who originally formed as the Lake Geneva Drama Club, who received no pay for their performances, according to the theater’s history. Some well-known actors also graced the stage at the Belfry including Paul Newman in 1949; Del Close, coach to some of the best-known comedians of the late 20th century, in 1953; Gary Burghoff, “Radar” of “M*A*S*H,” in 1962; and Harrison Ford in 1964. When Ford graduated from Ripon College in 1964, the 22-year-old took his first job as an actor at the Belfry Theatre, Connors said. The young actor was very charming and a good singer as well as actor, she said. He was known to walk up and down the hill into Williams Bay from the theater. “He enjoyed the tavern and the friends he’d met along the lake,” Connors said. Ford eventually bought a

scooter for his social trips down the hill into the Bay, she said. Allen Buzzell, 90, of Delavan, served 12 years on the Belfry Players board ending in 1967 and – by the flip of a coin – ended up with a backstage role during Ford’s performance of “Damn Yankees.” “My biggest thing was I was on stage with Harrison Ford, and I got the playbill to prove it,” he said. Buzzell’s son, Greg Buzzell, of Minocqua, worked all summer with Ford and provided Transformative Arts with a picture of the “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars” actor from his performance in “Little Miss Sunshine” at the Belfry Theatre. “Harrison Ford was Harrison Ford back then,” Allen Buzzell said. “He was a budding actor and very good.” Buzzell said Ford also was one of the lead carpenters at the theater, having done carpentry work for a living before acting. Buzzell’s son, Brian Buzzell, of Delavan, performed on stage with Burghoff at Delavan-Darien High School. Burghoff graduated from D-DHS in 1962, Buzzell said. sign up to volunteer on the theater’s website at belfrymusictheatre.com. When show production begins, the group will look for in-kind donors like homeowners to offer rooms in their homes to house traveling actors or producers, Connors said. The next scene Initial work in May will focus on the theater, which is housed in the brown 1967 addition. “It’s completely gutted,” Connors said. Renderings show a stage and 250-seat theater with removable rows of seats to make room for dance performances on the floor in front of the stage, Connors said. The group also is looking for donated seating. The white church portion of the building will be the lobby and ticketing area with restrooms and a concession area that will serve hors d’oeuvres and beer and wine. Connors said she hopes that much of the simple architecture and handcraftsmanship of the Mormon farmers in the 1880s can be preserved. “You can tell a lot of it is hand-hewn,” she said. “The oak rafters are good, solid, beautiful wood.” The first act Connors took a trip to Broadway to look at productions going on the road in 2015 and 2016. She said most theaters in Wisconsin are now booking through Christmas. Being a small theater, the Belfry will need to book productions in conjunction with other similar-size theaters in the state to make tickets affordable. Connors said an average show costs about $2,500 to bring in, and a better show will run about $5,000. To avoid charging $100 per ticket to pay for the shows, Connors has made connections with the Wisconsin Presenters Association and the Illinois Presenters Association to book productions around the same time as other theaters in Wisconsin and Illinois and keep ticket prices affordable. Connors said she wants to quash the rumor that Transformative Arts, a Christian organization made up of members of Calvary Community Church, intends to bring in only Christian shows. While some shows might have a Christian theme, Connors said the idea is an offshoot of community theater to bring in professional music and drama. “It’s really bringing in high-quality theater from off Broadway,” she said. Connors said she expects shows to begin in June 2016.

• Measles

(Continued from front page)

Residents should be aware

of the symptoms of measles, which include: • A fever that can get very high; • Cough, runny nose and red eyes; • A rash of tiny, red spots that starts at the head and spreads to the rest of the body. Since January, the Health Department has been providing information and updates on measles to local day care facilities, schools and health care providers. For more information, visit the Health Department’s website at: health.lakecountyil.gov or call (847) 3778130.

It’s Severe Weather Awareness Week in Illinois, and state emergency leaders are encouraging residents to be prepared for the threat of spring storms.

State observes severe weather awareness week The warmer and often volatile weather of spring will soon arrive, and during Severe Weather Awareness Week, state emergency officials are reminding Illinois residents about the dangers of thunderstorms, lightening, tornadoes and flash floods. Mike McClure, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, says residents should be cautious when a weather alert is issued, even if it is not in their immediate area. “Severe weather, you know, doesn’t fall nicely and neatly unfortunately as we like it to and into the exact areas that we forecast, he points out. “That’s why we say if you are in or near a watch area, be prepared and stay alert. A watch means an area has potential to see severe weather. A warning means severe weather is present or expected to arrive. The statewide tornado-warning test was held Tuesday. Schools, businesses and fam-

ilies are encouraged to practice tornado drills. To be prepared for severe weather, McClure advises residents to have a plan for seeking shelter at home or when traveling. He adds it’s also good to inspect your home for potential hazards during a storm, such as weakened trees or windows that could shatter. “Also wrapped into this may be learning how to use a fire extinguisher or administer CPR, he stresses. “Knowing how to turn off the electricity, gas and water. And then having an emergency supply kit because some storms may produce power outages that could last for quite a while. Along with local television and radio stations, smart phones can also send severe weather alerts. But McClure says they are not always reliable during power outages. He recommends a battery-operated weather alert radio. OPEN toOPEN the PUBLIC No Membership Fee to the PUBLIC No Membership Fee

Richmond man dies in car crash

A 57-year-old Richmond man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday on Highway 31 south of School Road in unincorporated Ringwood. Charles W. Schultz, Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a press release issued by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. Schultz was not wearing his seatbelt, although there was airbag deployment in his vehicle, the release said. A 38-year-old McHenry man was hospitalized in stable condition following the crash. Michael J. Reid II, was transported by ambulance to Centegra Hospital in McHenry. Reid was wearing his seatbelt and there was airbag deployment in his vehicle, officials said. According to the preliminary investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office, Schultz was driving a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser southbound on Highway 31 at 4:56 a.m., when the vehicle entered the northbound lane while rotating counterclockwise. Reid was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 north on Highway 31 and hit the right side of the Chrysler, sending both vehicles off the road to the east. An investigation is ongoing by the Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office. Members of the McHenry Fire Protection District also assisted at the scene. Mass of Resurrection for Schultz was held Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richmond. Inurnment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Richmond at a later date with arrangements handled by Ehorn-Adams Funeral Home.
